TCM's 31 Days of Oscar
What movies have you watched in this "Oscar Fest" so far?
This past weekend, I've watched Cleopatra, Arthur, Victor/Victoria, Fame, and now Good Will Hunting.
I never realized what absolute overly dramatic over-rated CRAP Good Will Hunting was. Plus, I can't stand Matt Damon.
I liked Cleopatra, but it was way too long.
So what have you watched?

I loved the run of foreign language films - 8 1/2, Mon Oncle, Z, Two Women and Rashomon. And I agree about Wings, fantastic. But my favorite new-to-me movie was The More the Merrier with Jean Arthur. Funny set up, funny situations, funny actors. A rare comedy that garnered (and earned) lots of Oscar nominations.

Dr. Zhivago is shown a lot on TCM. I enjoyed Two Women. Loren is breathtaking and the story of the struggles in Italy during WWII. I like foreign films...but sometimes, reading the subtitles takes away from the movie...for me.

Ive recorded Closely Watched Trains, Tgrough a Glass Darkly, Wuthering Heights, The Dark Angel (Lillian Hellman was one of the scriptwriters), The Divorcee, Lost Horizon, Cold Mountain, Klute, A Man for all Seasons, Wings, Cries and Whispers, Never on Sunday, Room at the Top, La Ceremonie. I’ve got lots of films recorded but I’ve watched Dodsworth and Dangerous. I’ve got Day for Night scheduled to record and can’t wait to see it again. This will be my second viewing. I’ve also recorded Z. That’s a great political thriller. I want to see Cries and Whispers. The movie played in our suburban multiplex in 1972 and I saw it there. Couldn’t believe I got the chance.

I loved the book, but the movie has not aged well. The accents are *terrible* and Renee Z's hammy sidekick routine was just cringe inducing. Hard to believe, but then unknown Charlie Hunnam was in that movie (I could never figure out why the albino didn't have to fight - was it because the army of General Lee couldn't stand extremely white people either?).
Loved Sense & Sensibility. Emma Thompson has become so insufferable in recent years it's hard to remember a time when she was so charming. Likewise, I liked Alan Rickman as the unconventional (and kind of odd) Brandon.

Shampoo is on tonight.
I just read the TCM synopsis on this movie, and I had no idea that it was about two lesbians (one of them being Goldie Hawn!) trying to play around with a hairdresser (Warren Beatty!).

Sunday morning, I watched the last half hour or so of Babette's Feast. Then I watched Morning Glory with K. Hepburn, followed by Jezebel with Bette Davis. I've seen that movie about 5 times. It always cracks me up when Henry Fonda says, "A red dress!" because the movie is in B&W.

TCM has programmed the 1967 Soviet film production of War and Peace! The running time is over seven hours. The government provided soldiers as film extras in the battle scenes. They did not allow the burning of Moscow. It’s a movie I’ve yearned to see and hope it’s a corrections that dismal production with Henry Fonda, Audrey Hepburn and that cipher Mel Ferrer.

The “Russian “War and Peace” is really a masterpiece! Well wort watching. (Terrible that it was so neglected for years that the quality of the prints has declined, and there are still missing sequences,) But what remains is a massive achievement.
However, I wonder if it will be cancelled, in protest for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

They just showed "Marty" the other night. I absolutely love that film. Who knew Ernest Borgnine could be that good playing a lonely Bronx butcher (in the same year he played a sadistic role in "From Here To Eternity") All of the roles are so well cast, especially the woman who play's Borgnine's mother. I was floored to learn that the homely "dog" Marty falls for was actually Gene Kelly's real-life wife.

I love Fiddler on the Roof; that's one thing I have to say for TCM - I enjoy their pre-movie commentary about the making of the movie and how the movie achieved a certain look/style. From a historical concept, it makes me sad to think that little villages like Anatevka were basically wiped out, with their citizens killed in pogroms or fleeing to other countries.

R77, I assume the snub R76 refers to is, perhaps, TCM's refusal to show Song of the South. The actor in question won an Academy Honorary Award. Why R76 seems to think that movie should be shown on TCM beyond this honorary award win is not clear, when there are so many competitively won Oscar-winning performances TCM can show.

After re-watching "Gone With the Wind", I'm kind of surprised by: Melly is clearly a perfect goody two shoes, but when the situation requires, she's tougher than she looks & knows how to lie like a champ. Scarlet is not only a selfish woman, but also a pretty bad wife & mother. When she tells Ashley to stop being so weak when his wife is dying, it's a cruel thing to say, but also long overdue. At the time, women portrayed in not entirely black/white terms must have been kind of shocking.
Except for Mammy, who gives no fucks, the way the servants were portrayed is cringe inducing - like children who don't know what to do without Scarlet telling them, though you wonder if in real life, many slaves (particularly house slaves) developed a sort of "learned helplessness" that they're so used to only operating on orders, they don't know any other way to function. Anyway, glad that movie is not "cancelled" because it still feels very timely.

This is the first time I've GWTW in full. Before, it was usually shown later...it's a long movie, so I've seen the beginning and toward the end....and not the middle. I would doze off and miss it. I really like it. I'm glad TCM didn't give in to the cancel culture. They still show the original movies, flaws and nudity, cursing and all. I hate when you watch a violent movie, and the cursing is dubbed with...."friggin, heck, darn", for the F bombs. It's so stupid.

I never understood Scarlett's obsession with Ashley. I guess the unattainability (sp) was the cause...when she could have any man, especially with someone like Rhett, who was a man's man, and a bit of a scoundrel....like her. Rhett truly adored her and wanted to spoil her, and loved her for all her flaws. The wanting what you can't have was strong for her. Ashley was a wimp. She was an interesting character...strong and childishly self absorbed. I thought of Mrs. Olsen, of Little House On The Prairie...but a smarter and braver version.

[quote]I never understood Scarlett's obsession with Ashley.
I've always wondered that too, but last night when I was watching it, it made me think that Ashley is the archetype of the south (or what the south thinks it is); proud and noble, a gentlemen to even someone who insults him inside his own home, living for duty, wealthy & comfortable while oblivious to what provides that comfort. He doesn't necessarily want a war, but he wants to defend his way of life. After the war, he's basically a broken man and he even laments to Scarlett that if the war had never happened, he'd be living this comfortable, oblivious life, but instead, he's received some hard cold reality about the way life really is.
So at the end, I think Scarlett wakes up to the idea that she's in love with something/a way of life that no longer exists, embodied by a man who is now a shell of himself. But yes, her infatuation with him is embarrassing, but he lead her on for years.

When does "31 Days of Oscar" officially end?
With a face slap?

Will Smith has officially made "The Academy" a fucking ghetto joke.
It will forever be known as the place where assaults happen and are condoned.

I wonder if King Richard will end up on TCM in 15 years or so. I know they aired Selma last month which is only 5 or 6 years old.
I noticed they have shown movies from the early to mid 2000s and some of those movies haven't hit the 20 year anniversary. With 31 days of Oscar, some of hosts shared trivial tidbits about the Oscar ceremonies of various years. If TCM is still around years from now, I can imagine some poor host feeling awkward about King Richard airing and having to discuss the 2022 Oscars.

I DVR’d “War and Peace,” and have been watching it. Beautiful, widescreen print. Such a massive, stylish movie. A true masterpiece.

Just watching "Days of Wine & Roses" & Lee Remick slurring "I LIKE GIN"
So do I, Lee, so do I. For a messy drunk, you've got awesome hair, by the way

R122, Days of Wine and Roses is awesome. I had forgotten until watching it on TCM this afternoon. The ending is absolutely heartbreaking.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown is on in about two and a half hours.
Wasn't it an Oscar nominee?

Oscar nominated movies are still shown throughout the year...just not everyday, like in March.
