FEUD: Celeste Holm vs Leonardo DiCaprio

I'm team Celeste because she is a Hollywood legend, no thanks to the profanity of Bette Davis.

DiCaprio’s Best Actor nomination for “The Revenant” brings up a memory.

March 1994. Russian Tea Room. I’m sitting with the late Celeste Holm, a multiple Oscar nominee who won 1948’s Best Supporting Actress.

It’s an Academy Awards nominees breakfast. Haughty Celeste pokes my ribs with: “Who’s the kid?” I tell her Leonardo was up for Best Supporting.

Then: “Who?” I tell her again.

She asks: “What’s he do?” Leo is sitting right. Staring.

I whisper: “He’s nominated for an Oscar.”

“As what?”

“Supporting Supporting Actor. For ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.’ ”

“Lord, I wouldn’t see that. Sounds like a pie-eating contest.”

Leo, still staring, wonders who’s this old bird. He asks who she is.

Told, “Celeste Holm. Famous actress.” Silence. Nothing. Nada. Niente. Then I quietly offer: ‘All About Eve’ with Bette Davis, ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ with Gregory Peck.”

“Never heard of them,” he says.

Celeste snaps: “Learn your industry’s history.”

Leo: “I won’t lie to you. I never saw you, either.”

Me, palms wet from nerves, was the one between them.

Leo preferred the company of Mickey Rooney.

He sounds like such a cocky, conceited youth. Proudly brandishing that he hasn't heard of Bette Davis or Gregory Peck, let alone two of the most iconic movies of all time. He has no business being in the film industry.

R4 Here he is with Lauren Bacall on multiple occasions.

I agree with Celeste. I would never watch What’s Eating Gilbert Grape based on the title alone.

LEONARDO DiCaprio was left starstruck after meeting veteran actor Mickey Rooney at a Hollywood event over the weekend (04-05Jan14).

The Great Gatsby star attended the Paramount Pictures luncheon on Sunday (05Jan14) in California, where he scored an autographed poster from one of The Babes on Broadway actor's movies.

A source tells the New York Daily News, "Leo was on cloud nine about it. They spent a fair amount of time talking about old movies together."

R4 Then why did he play Howard Hughes?

by Anonymousreply 11March 14, 2022 3:52 AM

R11 He obviously chose to educate himself upon receiving sound advice from Celeste Holm!
