Unfortunately not officially, but I think in many fans' head canon he's bi. He can be pretty flirty with Midnighter (who's gay).
Nevertheless, he's still DC's male sex symbol par excellence.

DC is a mess, I feel the time between 'Crises' gets shorter and shorter. Anyway... canonically, Nightwing seems to remain in his mid-20s perpetually and acts as a twunky big brother to the whole Bat Family.
Apparently, during the New 52 run, it was stated he was born in 1991.

[quote]Random Superman question but has Clark's son with Lois Lane from Superman Returns been made canon in the comic books?
Not exactly. In the comics, post-Crisis to Flashpoint (so, 1986-2011) Superman is married to Lois Lane and had a son, whom they named Jonathan Samuel Kent. Through Multiverse shenanigans, this Superman + Family ended up in another version of Earth (Prime-Earth), where the native Superman had just died. So, post-Crisis Superman took over.
Later, 11-year-old Jon Kent went on a trip with his mad, time-traveling grandfather Jor-El, during which he became trapped in a dimension where he was tortured by an evil version of his father for several years. When he finally managed to escape and return to Prime-Earth, he was about 17 years old, while only 3 weeks had passed for his parents. Fans hated the aging-up...

R34, it's a shame that there isn't a bigger selection for that in American comics today (except some indie formats). I guess this specific niche has been overtaken by Japanese and Korean manga.
There was a time when superhero comics almost died out because people were more interested in romance, horror, and western comics...

The hottest DC heroes are Nightwing, Timber Wolf, Mon-el, Arsenal and the silver age Hawkman. Oh, and the hot little green furball Beast Boy. The hottest Marvel heroes are Human Torch, Black Knight, Northstar, Havoc, Rictor and the Winter Soldier. Also Greycrow, as depicted in the recent Hellions run.
I will not be taking questions today.

[quote]Superman: Son of Kal-EL has fallen out of the Top 50--I believe. The Incel comice book crowd is abuzz.
Yeah, seems to be ranked 56th last month. Then again, Detective Comics came in at 75...
I hate those stupid incel neckbeards who either complain when established characters come out as gay or bi, saying the publishers should create new characters instead of ruining old ones, then when there is a new character, like Jon Kent, they complain the woke crowd is ruining comics with their "politics."
Still, DC is pushing really hard for newer, more diverse characters to replace the old ones, so some backlash is to be expected. I think it wasn't a good decision not to establish the newer characters in a well-written, relatively stand-alone Teen Titans/Young Justice title.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 17, 2022 10:57 AM |
R83. Surprise, surprise that Incel neckbeards have no idea what they are talking about. They just hate change. I think DC's recent push for diverse characters is great. It's the storytelling that needs to be worked on a bit.

I hope they NEVER lose John Timms. His art is so good. I would have had such a crush on Jon Kent when I was younger. Timms is also cute.

by Anonymous | reply 99 | March 20, 2022 1:37 PM |
R99, yes, Superman's/Clark's story is currently continued in Action Comics. He's on Warworld, trying to free the slaves there.
The Superman comic line has been replaced by 'Superman: Son of Kal-El', featuring his teenage son Jon who has taken over Clark's role as protector of Earth.

by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 26, 2022 8:08 PM |
I'm surprised when I hear that most comic artists aren't gay or at least bi. The male characters are drawn very, very homoerotically and the female characters, while clearly designed to appeal to straight guys, look like a woman as presented to a straight guy by a gay guy. There is a reason so many women's fashion designers are gay men, gay men can make a plain woman attractive to straight men, in a way that other women can't.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 26, 2022 8:19 PM |
R104 I think even men who sincerely identify as straight can have an appreciation of idealized male bodies that is hard to distinguish from lust.

Jon coming out sucked up all the bisexual oxygen in the DCU. Which is a shame. Jon's coming out was very sweet--the issue was titled "Who's Got You?" a reference to the best scene in Superman: The Movie, which predisposed me to love it--but Tim's coming out to himself moved me in a way Jon's didn't.
Lightbulb moment. And lightbulb MARY!

Stephen Sadowski(the artist on JSA on the Robsinson/Goyer/Johns revival) is gay. I saw him at a panel at San Diego comic con and he said he tried to put the guys in sexy positions(especially Wildcat) and his editors did make him change some things... there is one episode that Wildcat is in a tub and it was printed differently than Sadowski wanted
by Anonymous | reply 110 | March 26, 2022 10:48 PM |
Sadowski used to be in our old JSA Yahoo chats, and he had all kinds of stories.
He said the inker, Michael Bair, was an old guy who always tried to un-sexify Steve's hot men. Stevie said Bair and the fill-in artist Buzz were creepy old straight men (this was 1999-2001).
Steve modeled his depiction of Mordru... on himself!
He would never confirm nor deny that original JSA writers James Robinson and David Goyer had an affair when they lived together, but would make smiley emoticons when we would suggest that.
He said he assumed Geoff Johns was gay, but guessed his gaydar must've been off (or not!).
Sand was supposed to be gay but Johns convinced Goyer to switch him to straight.
He LOVED Hippolyta as the Golden Age Wonder Woman!

by Anonymous | reply 113 | March 26, 2022 11:01 PM |
Current editorial is a fan, because Polly and Diana are splitting the title now.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | March 26, 2022 11:10 PM |
Well! To continue on Hippolyta, Queen Phil Jimenez HATED her, despite pretending to like her. He claimed that "editorial" forced him to kill off Hippolyta when he was writing WONDER WOMAN.
HOWEVER, back in 2001, Jeph Loeb, who wrote and orchestrated the whole OUR WORLDS AT WAR event, told me several times in IMs that Miss Jimenez was the one who offered up Hippolyta as a character to die in the crossover series, as he despised her "taking away Diana's uniqueness." Loeb said they had zero plans to kill off Hippolyta (and that DC as a whole really loved her in her role as the Golden Age Wonder Woman in JSA and elsewhere), but Jimenez insisted on killing her off to keep her from "diminishing" Diana.
The JSA writers were furious, as they'd planned for Hippolyta to be on the team full-time.

Nowadays, I just buy trades, so I'm wondering, since the Bendis JUSTICE LEAGUE isn't in TPB yet, does Hippolyta remember being in the JLA in a previous continuity? The current mandate is that all of the characters remember their former lives and that "it all counts."
So, has Hippolyta referred to her stints in the JSA and JLA?

by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 26, 2022 11:44 PM |
For me, it's just a bit weird because they made the Earth-whatever Alan Scott in the New 52 gay because, essentially, they had erased Obsidian, but now the original Alan and his family are back and they didn't want to go back with his being gay either, so now we have a gay father with a gay son.
It's not that I'm complaining, I like gay Alan, but it's so DC with their crises fuckups...

That was the most awful origin of Wonder Woman ever. Even Kanigher's 1958 retelling and Messner-Loebs' tweaking in 1993 weren't as awful as Rucka's mess.

I'm just grateful that after fucking it up and half-assing it for so long, they've FINALLY started to do a good job with representation. I know, I know, there are trans and non-binary characters, gross. But they've done a good job of growing things both on the page and in the creative realm, and I think it's wonderful.

I hate James Tynion's bisexual agenda. It's felt all over DC with him as an influential writer. He seems so anti-gay in interviews, pushing the bisexual and fluid talking points.
Why couldn't Jon Kent be gay?
I'm disgusted that the upcoming Catwoman/Harley Quinn one-shot will end with lesbian sex between them. Of course, more female bisexuality.
But no major GAY MEN at DC at all. Just bisexual women and men. And Lesbians. And trans.

Bendis can only write urban, superheroes who are basically hand to hand fighters. His Avengers team was basically a group of these put together who would take turns fighting bad guys. He can't choreograph a big complex superhero battle with a range of powers to save his life. Fight choreography is an underrated skill but essential for team comics. He should be nowhere near the Legion and JLA.

R135.. that's a suggestive cover with Wolverine? it's like he had the beer between his legs sticking up! Personally think that is major overreaching....

I mean, the House of X suggestion that Wolverine and Cyclops, who were in a throuple with Jean, were also having sex with each other was kind of hot.

Take it up with the artist, who was amazed that, "nobody at Marvel noticed!"

We were in the same room 23 years ago. Weird. I went and met up with a bunch of gay comics fans from all over the country who had met through AOL chat rooms.
And still I didnt get any!

R132 Oh, people HATE Bendis at DC. I can't believe he's the same writer who had Wanda go crazy and murderize 90% of the mutant population as well as Vision and Hawkeye. What happened to THAT guy?
Once he moved to DC, he "ruined" Superman (Who I think is fucking boring anyway) and then The Titans (not his fault b'c they haven't been good since the 80s) and rebooted the Legion of Heroes and definitely RUINED the Justice League.
His humor is just not appropriate for mainstream UNLESS it's a quirky group of personalities. His dialogue is very Whedonesque and just doesn't mesh with established characters. DC's not really known for humor. Superman doesn't work with witty dialogue. I like his run on the Legion because there's like...one thousand different members from different races and planets etc. with different personalities plus they're ALL young, so his writing works for me in that situation. The thing with Bendis is NOTHING really happens UNTIL there's a huge crossover event. Otherwise, it's just filler after filler.
His run on the JL is TERRIBLE. Again, a title not known for its sense of humor. And the rooster is awful...Hippolyta, Canary, Green Arrow, Superman, Black Adam, Flash, Aquaman, Naomi
I will admit the ONLY thing I like about his Superman run is his take on Superman's inner dialogue. It humanized him just a little bit for me. I was NEVER a Supes fan until the New 52. Hell, wasn't really a DC fan until the New 52.

Oh, Tom Taylor, who writes "Son of Kal-el" joined a Facebook group I'm in that was discussing the most recent issue. I felt AWUFL for the guy because he's fully aware of how this community of incels feels about writers taking a "woke" approach with characters. There's no way in hell I could read ALL of that negativity and remain sane.

R143, if you get the chance, please tell him that I returned to reading DC... no, comics actually... because of Jon Kent coming out. ❤
