Glenn Close Stands By William Hurt Despite #MeToo Allegations

BOTH Marlee Matlin & Sandra Jennings (another ex-partner of William Hurt) have made allegations of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

However Glenn Close has always stood by and defended William Hurt saying

“The important thing,” said Glenn Close, “is that Bill is really doing something about it. He’s seeking support, and he’s passionate about it, and for that reason he has my deepest respect. He’s in great shape, the best he’s ever been in. I think he’s actually quite a different person.”

by Anonymousreply 78March 23, 2022 7:13 PM

Loyalty is attractive.

Usually.

by Anonymousreply 1March 13, 2022 5:19 PM

Oh, Glenn, stop talking.

by Anonymousreply 2March 13, 2022 6:15 PM

I've worked with Marlee in the past and am friendly with her still. I just love her. She can hardly talk about Hurt. The pain that spreads over her face when she does? Frankly, it's hard to be around.

I'm all for rehab and second chances, but what he did to her was so physically and psychologically cruel that I could never move past it myself.

by Anonymousreply 3March 13, 2022 8:15 PM

He and Glenn should attend the Academy Awards together, both dressed as Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 4March 13, 2022 9:02 PM

Now that he's dead, are their #MeToo allegations still a thing?

by Anonymousreply 5March 13, 2022 9:10 PM
She can hardly talk about Hurt. The pain that spreads over her face when she does? Frankly, it's hard to be around.

I wouldn’t want to be around when Marlee is talking either.

by Anonymousreply 6March 13, 2022 9:10 PM

Did he say mean things to Marlee?

by Anonymousreply 7March 13, 2022 9:11 PM

Yes R7. He told her she smells like doo-doo and that deaf people deserve to be beat.

HELLO!?

Yeah- he kind of said mean things and kinda assaulted her on the nightly.

by Anonymousreply 8March 13, 2022 9:27 PM

Alcoholics who abuse are almost harder to leave, because you think, if he could just quit, I know he’d stop treating me like this…

And it’s common to for their charm (manipulation) to win over people who don’t experience the real lows.

by Anonymousreply 9March 13, 2022 9:30 PM

What the fuck have you done, OP?!

by Anonymousreply 10March 13, 2022 9:30 PM

He was on The King of Queens.

by Anonymousreply 11March 13, 2022 9:33 PM

Like many men who abuse their partners, he beat up Matlin because he was so insecure about himself.

He was not a nice person by any stretch of the imagination. He was hot (when hew as younger), and also talented, but he was really an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 12March 13, 2022 9:35 PM

Hurt was a total asshole who would prattle on endlessly with his weirdo theories on all and sundry. When Ken Russell directed him in Altered States, he drove Russell nuts, would never stop talking, rambling on with his weird musings. Hurt could not shut up.

Years later somebody told Russell that Hurt was dating a deaf actress (Marlee Matlin). Russell: well, that's a marriage made in heaven.

by Anonymousreply 13March 13, 2022 10:18 PM

He sounded like a complete idiot. But I love BROADCAST NEWS.

by Anonymousreply 14March 13, 2022 11:49 PM

I suppose he was a good actor but a lousy human being. An abuser of women. He and Marlee Matlin had their affair when she wa19 and he was 35. Ugh. She said after she won the Oscar for "Children of a Lesser God" he railed at her in the limo, saying she was undeserving of the award because the other nominees were experienced actresses who had worked for years at their craft whereas she was just starting out in her first lead role in a film. I think he had a point. Anyway, in her book she accused him of, among other things, coming home drunk and dragging her out of bed and raping her. What a lovely Hollywood love affair! But what did she expect? He was a much older man with a drinking problem. But I guess she was starry eyed at the idea of being the lover of the gorgeous, sexy, acclaimed actor William Hurt. She was a young Hollywood twit.

by Anonymousreply 15March 14, 2022 12:06 AM

He died, OP.

by Anonymousreply 16March 14, 2022 12:48 AM

He raped Marlee? I thought that he slapped her around but didn’t know that he raped her. Good riddance then.

by Anonymousreply 17March 14, 2022 1:56 AM

Holy shit. Can't believe this thread was started on the day he died. Spooky.

Marlee said that worse than the beatings was the psychological bullying. I guess the night she won her Oscar he was especially cruel. Can't remember the details, but basically telling her that doesn't belong with the other nominated actresses and if she wins? Just a pity win.

Like, who does that?

by Anonymousreply 18March 14, 2022 4:09 AM

I had him on a couple flights. Didn’t recognize him at first, he looked like a homeless man.

by Anonymousreply 19March 14, 2022 4:27 AM

He was always ugly.

by Anonymousreply 20March 14, 2022 4:35 AM

Why am I getting a huge pic of some fat Asian guy when I click on his wikipedia?!?

by Anonymousreply 21March 14, 2022 4:49 AM

R20 He was pretty sexy when he was young. “Bodyheat” for example

by Anonymousreply 22March 14, 2022 5:13 AM

He always gave me slightly icky, slimy feeling. Like something that crawled out from under a rock. Hate to speak ill of the dead though. He was not a particularly memorable actor- don't feel like the was the first choice of too many directors. But he was competent.

by Anonymousreply 23March 14, 2022 5:21 AM

R22 Not even then.

by Anonymousreply 24March 14, 2022 5:33 AM

Marlee was sublime in Children of a Lesser God. Of course it’s a very specific performance but not unqualified, it was very moving and the prize should be given to a performance which is. Emma Stone anyone? Barf.

by Anonymousreply 25March 14, 2022 5:44 AM

Did the beatings cause Marlee’s deafness?

by Anonymousreply 26March 14, 2022 6:22 AM
he said after she won the Oscar for "Children of a Lesser God" he railed at her in the limo, saying she was undeserving of the award because the other nominees were experienced actresses who had worked for years at their craft whereas she was just starting out in her first lead role in a film.

Interestingly, R15, 3 of Matlin co-nominees that year were former co-stars of Hurt - Sissy Spacek, Kathleen Turner and Sigourney Weaver with whom he seemed to be in good terms (he did go on to work with all of them again later).

There are two options when someone commits a great harm: They can atone, repent and change, or they can kill themselves on the spot.

I honestly don’t have any issues with what Glenn Close said.

by Anonymousreply 28March 14, 2022 9:37 AM

Well, yay for Glenn. He never raped HER.

by Anonymousreply 29March 14, 2022 9:51 AM

r15 wrote a whole damn essay proving that he, too, is a lousy human being.

by Anonymousreply 30March 14, 2022 10:11 AM

OP's quote is from [bold] 1989 [/bold] and it's Glenn talking about [bold] his drinking problem, [/bold] not about beating women.
“If Sandra’s relationship with Bill had been healthier, if he’d shown her more courtesy over the years,” Jim continues, “then there wouldn’t be such bitterness now. He treats her almost like she’s the baby-sitter. Deep down inside, Bill is a very good guy, but his fame has made him paranoid over questions of control. After I his role in 1980’s Altered States, his drinking problem became very bad, and continued to be very bad for a long time. In the last few years, he’s dried out and is trying to get the better of his problem.”

I mean… when you’re beating and raping a just barely post-adolescent deaf lady, what’s your angle?

by Anonymousreply 32March 14, 2022 3:43 PM

^ She never said stop?

by Anonymousreply 33March 15, 2022 12:48 AM
it's Glenn talking about his drinking problem, not about beating women.

It was a Palimony lawsuit where allegations of domestic abuse & sexual assault brought up - and Glenn Close made that statement AFTER the allegations were entered into evidence

by Anonymousreply 34March 15, 2022 12:52 AM

He sounds like a total lowlife.

G looks good, like a natural woman... it's kind of nice to see an unfiltered Hollywood face.

by Anonymousreply 37March 16, 2022 7:49 PM

I just love Glenn Close. I could listen to her talk about anything.

by Anonymousreply 38March 16, 2022 8:39 PM

Glenn should film some fireside chats. She has a pleasant face and a sincere quality to her story telling.

I wish young actresses would look to her example of aging. She's still beautiful, age appropriate, and her face is not a distraction of fillers. She can actually make a full range of human facial expressions.

by Anonymousreply 39March 16, 2022 9:15 PM

Here's the monologue she talked about in her Instagram post. Pretty funny!

Glenn is BFFs with Mary Beth Hurt, so I’m assuming William Hurt never laid a finger on her. Or Glenn is a lousy gal friend.

by Anonymousreply 41March 16, 2022 11:35 PM

Mary Beth said they permanently separated after 7 years of marriage in 1978, then divorced 4 years later; she actually testified for him in the Sandra Jennings palimony suit, stating that William told her he was "through with marriage" and had no intention of marrying Jennings, even though she was pregnant.

by Anonymousreply 42March 17, 2022 12:11 AM

Marlee is pretty classy. And it looks like Hurt acknowledged the abuse and didn’t deny it.

by Anonymousreply 43March 17, 2022 12:16 AM

Matlin looks gorgeous. She's well into her 50s now but looks great. Very classy response about Hurt. He was a real shit to a teenage deaf girl. How big an asshole do you have to be to act like that?

by Anonymousreply 44March 17, 2022 1:14 AM

It doesn't seem like a bad word is ever said of Humphrey Bogart. I mean, he was a raging drunk who abused women. William Hurt was talented, like Bogie. Why is one forgiven, but the other is not? Richard Burton was an abusive drunk, but talented and respected. Few people seem to loathe him, though. Why? Is it that some of these talented, mean drunks were charming, but others had zilch charisma? They say that Sean Bean is winsome in his words and ways, usually. Maybe that's all it takes to get a free ride in Hollywood. Mel Gibson wasn't or isn't charming enough? Or was it the hard evidence to prove the ugly stories that was released? That might be a part of this, too.

by Anonymousreply 45March 18, 2022 5:37 AM

He never bothered Glenn because he was not into men.

by Anonymousreply 46March 18, 2022 5:42 AM

Oh, please. Marlee was no angel in the '80s. Needy and addicted. 🤮

by Anonymousreply 47March 18, 2022 5:48 AM

He had an odd/spacy/detached vibe, but I often liked his performances (especially Altered States, Body Heat, Broadcast News, The Accidental Tourist, and the much-maligned Until the End of the World). We shared a birthday. Sounds like he was a mess as a human being, though.

Thread is making me want to rewatch The Big Chill. Which as a good Gen X'er I always had a love/hate relationship with.

by Anonymousreply 48March 18, 2022 5:57 AM

Mary Beth Hurt was cute in Chilly Scenes of Winter and The World According To Garp.

I don’t mean to be a vulgarian or anything, but she hit a fucking wall very early on post-Garp, and this was when she was still in her thirties. What the hell happened?

by Anonymousreply 49March 18, 2022 2:08 PM

Thanks, R51 - that’s actually one of my favorite characters and performances.

by Anonymousreply 52March 18, 2022 3:43 PM

Mary Beth continued to give good performances in smaller roles in movies, but from the early 80s on she seems to have relied on the stage for more interesting, less vulgar work.

by Anonymousreply 53March 18, 2022 5:02 PM

Glenn gets a pass because she's been through a lot of shit herself, and in recent years has started to speak out more and more about it. Growing up in a cult, and the toll it took on her for one thing.

She's also had some odd pairings herself. She dated Woody Harrelson in the early 90's at the height of his partying and was linked with Robert Pastorelli of Murphy Brown fame. A couple of years after they separated, he got involved with a woman who was found dead. And then Pastorelli killed himself.

She must have some stories to tell.

by Anonymousreply 54March 18, 2022 5:21 PM

Well, Meryl Streep still defends Harvey Weinstein, and Cate Blanchett owes one of her Oscars to Woody Allen.

It's a fucked-up industry that forces these women to rely on these men for career success. Pity them all, and change the channel.

by Anonymousreply 58March 19, 2022 7:14 AM

Marlee Matlin was a pain in the azz during our Reasonable Doubts days (1991-1993).

by Anonymousreply 59March 19, 2022 7:24 AM

Hurt was good in the movie Michael too.

by Anonymousreply 60March 19, 2022 7:27 AM
Thread is making me want to rewatch The Big Chill. Which as a good Gen X'er I always had a love/hate relationship with.

Yesssss! My friends & I adored The Big Chill as 16-17 year olds. Went to see it multiple times in theaters, bought the soundtrack, etc. There was fascination (at that time) with the late '60s/Woodstock era. My favorite bit, which I still quote to this day, is Nick & Sam watching the old gangster movie.

I liked William Hurt's first two films, Altered States (with Drew Barrymore) and Eyewitness (with Sigourney Weaver).

by Anonymousreply 62March 19, 2022 7:57 AM

He was clearly tormented by being gay. Violent rape is a masculine act so I'm sure he felt manly doing it.

by Anonymousreply 63March 19, 2022 9:23 AM
It doesn't seem like a bad word is ever said of Humphrey Bogart. I mean, he was a raging drunk who abused women.

I would wager that a lot of the people who would call themselves Bogie fans are older and have no idea about his personal life beyond the very basics. I mean, who would be talking about Bogie's stuff now, and to whom would they be talking about it? Young people don't know him or give a fuck. But also, Bogie is long dead, and up until very recently William Hurt was alive, and lived in an era where men are more often held accountable for shitty behavior than in the past.

R55 Whoever that woman is (she appears to be a nobody), she's so thrilled she can trash somebody who's dead so she can get some publicity. He may have been a shit, but so is she. What Marlee Matlin said about Hurt's death was classy.

by Anonymousreply 67March 20, 2022 4:56 AM

Meryl Streep is not defending Weinstein. Are you just making up stuff again?

I saw him in person 10 year ago. He was much more handsome in the flesh. Even though the baldness made me question why he was always labelled as the thinking woman’s sex symbol.

by Anonymousreply 71March 20, 2022 6:30 PM

Bogart also never beat any women he was with. That Mayo Methot women beat HIM, stabbed him I think. In fact, he wasn't a tough guy at all - I think Orson Welles said he'd always pick fights verbally but pussy out whenever it seemed like people would actually respond to him.

And Woody Allen was never convicted of any crime. He went to trial and was cleared. It's insane how Mia and Dylan managed to trot out her accusations like they weren't already a media circus two decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 72March 20, 2022 6:34 PM

How did old fogey Bogie pull a fox like the young Lauren Bacall?

by Anonymousreply 73March 21, 2022 1:09 PM

Bogart came from an aristocratic NY family. The tough-guy gangster image was totally for the movies.

by Anonymousreply 74March 21, 2022 4:06 PM

Woody Allen was never charged so he never went to trial. But his career and reputation were severely damaged.

by Anonymousreply 75March 21, 2022 5:35 PM

I was cleared of my #MeToo accusation, which is a rare feat. But my career was already long dead, so there's no resurgence to be had.

Nobody stood by ME! Not even my ball-busting bitch of an ex-wife, and we all know how much she LIVES for anti-Hollywood drama!

by Anonymousreply 76March 21, 2022 11:51 PM

Buck would have never been #MeToo-ed.

by Anonymousreply 77March 23, 2022 6:28 PM
Bogart also never beat any women he was with. That Mayo Methot women beat HIM, stabbed him I think.

He and Mayo beat each other, they did it in public on occasion and there were numerous witnesses. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia but they both drank and hit each other.
And Woody Allen was never convicted of any crime. He went to trial and was cleared.

There was no trial. He wasn't cleared of anything.

What dumbass keeps saying he was put on trial and then cleared of charges? We get that CONSTANTLY whenever he comes up and I have to think the person saying it is lying on purpose, or too stupid to tie their own shoes.
