Who could be more woke than Canadians
In a candid letter to supporters, Getz said she felt “terrible and conflicted,” but could not in good conscience present a concert by a Russian artist who had not spoken out against the war.
“Alexander is an incredibly talented young artist embarking upon what will surely be — in a sane world — a stellar career,” she wrote. “He is now being penalized, despite the fact that he has nothing to do with what’s going on.”

I was kind of thinking that too; I turned on BM yesterday for the first time in years & he had some damn ass pitching her book about "woke journalism" (whatever), but he was eating it up because she was hot. After that was over, he went on some weird rant about "Well, ask yourself why Putin didn't invade Ukraine under Trump...if you weren't wedded to some ideology, maybe that's a valid question" - as if his analysis of the situation is oh so evolved compared to everyone else. He wants to think he's "edgy" but he's just a cranky, boring old man saying outlandish things in an effort to get attention - any attention. And when he gets called for his BS, he cries about being cancelled & "woke", no different than your basic Fox News moron.

The morons who scream about "woke" have become bigger idiots than anything "woke," because they're too fucking stupid to comprehend which political ideology actually threatens to silence them and control what they can and can't teach or read. The irony of miserable cunts like Maher who thinks the left is hypersensitive is that he really doesn't have the guts to bring on people who can challenge him. He'll give a platform to the most repugnant, right-wing, hateful scum like Bannon or Ben Shapiro or Milo, but don't you dare be from the progressive left and challenge Maher's myopic worldview. And my God, WTF is with bringing on Bari Weiss every five minutes whining about the left and cancel culture as she obsessively blames everything on "antisemitism."
He and people like Weiss are the most thin-skinned, hypocritical assholes.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 14, 2022 11:19 AM |
Actually whining about "woke" acts as cover for the *actual banning of speech and books and ideas that the right is trying to impose.
States all over the country are threatening teachers and doctors and others with arrest, loss of employment and fines for TALKING about abortion, trans issues, homosexuality.
But I guess the real threat to liberty is one orchestra somewhere choosing to play one thing over the other.

I'm done with him. And I say that as someone who has watched him regularly all the way back to the Politically Incorrect days. He has actually become the very kind of person he spent the last few decades mocking and ripping apart.
I've said it here many times, you could see the change happening slowly over the last several years, and something snapped for him during the Trump years, and definitely during the pandemic.
And R20 nails it, he isn't challenged anymore. I remember folks occasionally calling him out on his show before...now it's just an echo chamber for him to rant, constantly tell anyone who disagrees with him, or actually corrects him, "well, your wrong" or "well, I'm right" as he ends every conversation looking back at his cards,...and then he has the gall to lecture liberals for talking down to people, or not communicating with the other side. And then he complains liberals won't do his show. I call bullshit on that one, as he keeps having the same short list of tired personalities season after season. (And yes, enough with that idiotic Bari Weiss. Nobody cares for her. No one).
On twitter, he's now loved by the crazy ass right-wingers who claim he's been red-pilled, the very people he spent decades calling out and rightfully ripping apart.
And top of that, just his whole shtick has become 'cranky old man". It's not funny, or clever, or informative anymore. The tired, hypocritical contrarian act has him playing right into the hands of the right.

They haven't, that's why you have to engage in lazy "both sides" nonsense to justify your laziness.
Whatever you've mentioned, doesn't come close to the hysteria from people who scream about woke. Isolated nonsense does not come close to what the right-wing IS doing - not on "Twitter" or some orchestra in Wales, but in statehouses across the country.
That you think DeSantis passing a "Don't Say Gay" bill or attempting to limit the type of history that can be taught so that "white feelings" don't get hurt or Gov. Youngkin creating a snitch line to report teachers or any number of book bans or control over a woman leaving the state for an abortion, is the same as a Welsh orchestra, is so ridiculous

Being a Trump supporter in itself is an admission of being in denial about reality. You're taking blue pills by the shovel when you're a Trump supporter. No one in their right mind could think Trump is fit to be human, let alone president.

The issue isn't holding left and right accountable. The issue is treating a jaywalker as being just as dangerous as a drunk driver, and constantly obsessing over the jaywalker.
People are allowed to boycott things like Joe Rogan, just as the right-wing boycotted the NFL, Starbucks, Keurig, etc. Biden is not legislating the censorship of Joe Rogan. Democrats are not attempting to enact laws to suppress voting or teaching history or censoring books. A "tweet" from some"woke" person is not a dinner bell to start shrieking about the entire left and then acting like you're the "sensible moderate" in the middle. No, what you've done is set up two sets of rules for the left vs the right. The right can actually legislate their repugnant behavior and a "moderate" thinks that the same as some woke tweet from a liberal.

In Harvey Fierstein's autobio, he related a story from when he was on Maher's previous "Politically Incorrect." During the filming, Fierstein, in an argument with the arch conservative Michael Reagan (son of Ronald Reaga), Fierstein got angry and said, "Fuck you and fuck your father."
There was lots of blame on Fierstein by the network about having to edit the episode and how much money it cost. In the end, when the episode came out, the network just bleeped out his words. On the other hand, the Maher completely edited out a discussion with either Vanessa or Lynn Redgrave (can't recall which) about how the show is sexist because it rarely features females.

I stopped watching Maher several years ago when it became apparent he’d become bitter and angry that he was called out over something he’d said. He was always fine calling out others, but when he said something offensive, he wouldn’t accept responsibility or even acknowledge that the criticism was at least partially valid, or as he would say, had a kernel of truth.
No one is perfect, no one is right all the time, and the mark of an adult is admitting that you’re human and your opinions evolve over time. Maher can’t see that his opinions have changed and he’s far further to the political right than even a few years ago. He’s become intellectually lazy and rigid, two traits he shares with his many, many right wing guests. That’s part of being on the political right; not having to think about your positions is much easier.
It’s time for Bill to retire.

But somehow you believe a country that is totally Nationalistic will turn on it’s leader , even though at the moment he is incredibly popular? How ?
Will they somehow decide that we have a point , even though we have cut them off from everything and what little news they had from the outside world is gone?

During an interview with Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., about his new book, The Vanishing American Adult, Maher and Sasse were discussing adults who dress up for Halloween. Sasse said that happened less often in Nebraska, where the practice is "frowned upon."
"I've got to get to Nebraska more," said Maher.
To which Sasse earnestly replied, "You're welcome. We'd love to have you work in the fields with us."
Maher narrowed his brow. "Work in the fields?" he said, raising his palms. "Senator, I'm a house [N-word]."
Sasse smiled uncomfortably, and some groans were audible from the audience. "It's a joke," protested Maher, moving the conversation along. Claps could then be heard from the audience.

^Describes male anal rape as the main metaphor to get back at his former group NWA.
Ironically, even uses the term "House Nigga"

He's not wrong.
Americans can be such simpletons. Remember when the French (correctly) opposed the invasion of Iraq, so people wanted to rename "french fries" in protest to "freedom fries."
Exactly what does Tchaikovsky or Tolstoy have to do with Putin?

[quote] I couldn't find anything about Cube being homophobic, and yes, I looked,
You obviously didn't look hard enough. R77 describes his homophobic lyrics. Plus, Ice Cube is in a field that thrives on hateful, hurtful, violent lyrics. So his appearance on Bill Maher was ridiculous.
I'm not saying Ice Cube is himself particularly homophobic (he did publicly support gay marriage and was publicly against Georgia's anti-gay bills). But, I also don't believe Maher is racist just because he used that term.

[quote] Exactly what does Tchaikovsky or Tolstoy have to do with Putin?
Nothing and theyre not really getting canceled.
An orchestra here or there changed their programming to remove a Russian composer from a concert, but it won't last long. No one is canceling Tolstoy.
Performers, on the other hand, who have been Putin supporters loudly ARE being cancelled. I'm fine with that.

As am I.
You don't cancel a country. You cancel its leaders and supporters of its leaders and their policies.

[quote] More than once he's used being gay as an insult toward Lindsey Graham and Trump and Putin, too, like what they are isn't bad enough, let's add GAY to it too so people will realize they're REALLY gross.
As datalounge habitually does. That's always seemed to bizarre. Self hatred or simple lack of self awareness I've never been able to decide.
[quote] his show should be cancelled because he's lost his edge & has to resort to slurs & cheap tricks
Why single out Bill for this. Every cookie-cutter late night show went that route since 2015

There was a young Russian performer who has been cancelled in Canada I think because he did not speak out but he has family in Russia.I hate this Russophobia. We know why it is so widespread, because they are White people and we can show our hatred’s openly.

R86 how many Miss Lindsay Graham devoted threads have we had on the DL? THAT’s what you’re busting him for?

After 9/11, we were told to not demonize Muslims. After Covid, we were told not to demonize the Chinese. Now we're being told it's ok to demonize Russians even though a good percentage of Russians do not support the war against Ukraine. There is a double standard here.

[quote]Now we're being told it's ok to demonize Russians
Who, exactly, is saying this?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 16, 2022 12:02 PM |
R97, but according to the moron @r95, it only started with "white people." That tells you the dumbass was either asleep for every fucking Iraq war, 9/11 and Covid or probably participated in the hate towards Muslims and Asians and considers it legitimate to demonize those people.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | March 16, 2022 2:36 PM |
BTW, moron @R95, when 9/11 happened, it wasn't only innocent Muslims who were verbally and violently attacked. Sikhs and Hindus were attacked - even murdered. Anyone who looked vaguely "Muslim" was attacked. Same with Asians and Covid/Vietnam/Korea/WW2. Same with Hispanics. There have always, always, always been scapegoats - and they were not "white people."
Get back to us when every "white" person is attacked because someone thought they looked vaguely Russian.

Seems like every passing comment Maher makes now is isolated into a new thread to provoke outrage. Of course he mocked people that think they have to pour out their Russian vodka, etc. That isn't that unusual or stunning.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 16, 2022 2:42 PM |
R101, it also isn't some widespread effort. The issue with Maher and his defenders who think they're the "sane moderates" is that they have to exaggerate efforts on the left to make it seem as if it's greater than it is to justify his bloviating about it. He takes some isolated example and pretends it's going on everywhere and it's a part of the Progressive platform...as he ignores the actual legislative efforts by the right, which is an actual threat.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 16, 2022 2:47 PM |
Maher isn't a libertarian. He's basically an old-fashioned blue-dog Democrat. We need blue dogs too.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 16, 2022 2:57 PM |
You mean like Joe Manchin? No, what we need are Democrats who don't ENABLE the right-wing and bellow about every single thing a progressive says or does.
We need Democrats who don't take a perceived "woke" tweet and engage in hyperbole and hysteria over it, while dismissing the right-wing's REAL efforts to destroy this country. He gives a platform to people like Steve Bannon. He does not do the same for progressives who could challenge him. Bill Maher is not some voice of reason. He's an insufferable, thin-skinned, hypocritical douchebag. Gutless.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 16, 2022 3:05 PM |
You'll forgive me if a Welsh orchestra not playing Russian music isn't as big of a threat to me as the wife of a Supreme Court Justice being a fanatic who not only makes money off of cases that come before her husband, but was actually a part of the effort to overthrow the United States government. Has Maher had anything to say about that or is he too busy whining about "woke" for the millionth time?

YOU are r77.
[quote]I'm not saying Ice Cube is himself particularly homophobic (he did publicly support gay marriage and was publicly against Georgia's anti-gay bills).
You said he was homophobic. I said I couldn't find anything that confirmed this. You told me I just didn't look hard enough, but then moved the goalposts and said Cube wasn't homophobic but his lyrics were.
Fine. You're being a petty little bitch with this shit, but fine. We agree that Ice Cube himself is not a homophobe, the best we can tell.
Now I'll just sit back and wait for you to address the fact that your hero Bill Maher isn't a homophobe but his jokes are and his guests are. I'm sure you'll be doing that any second now.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 16, 2022 3:13 PM |
I notice people who think they're "moderates" or right-wing, have to constantly pull up clips or pics or lyrics from 30 fucking years ago to justify the *current* behavior of right-wingers or those who enable them, because evolution is lost on them.
I keep seeing that old picture of people like Howard Stern or Jimmy Kimmel in black face to justify what the right-wing does NOW. It's like when idiots mention the KKK was started by Democrats as if that has any relevancy today. Yeah, I recall when the Democrats chose Obama, all of those anti-KKK Republicans never ever passed around images of Obama with a bone through his nose or Michelle as an ape.

Sure it is. State stores in PA removed Russian alcohol from their shelves... Vodka and other alcohol that had long been paid for and not another cent from its sale would go to Russia. The sane response would have been to sell it until stock had run out and just not reorder.

Please, I don't know Ice Cube and Bill Maher any more that you do. I base my opinions of them from what they say and produce.
Ice Cube's lyrics are homophobic. He didn't rap about breaking someone's legs because he doesn't like them; he rapped about sticking a broom up someone's ass with no vaseline.

That's actually what's happening. They're not buying anymore because they have a stock they're not selling.

Well put R102; there are always going to be extreme elements on both sides - no argument there. I personally wouldn't vote for Ilhan Omar, but I don't live her in district, but I respect their right to pick their representative just like Boebert's district picked her. But Maher picks a couple of extreme, mostly isolated examples while rambling on about "being woke" when what he's really talking about is how he's been called out over the years for the offensive shit he's done & said.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | March 16, 2022 6:12 PM |
One extreme example was talking about diversity training.
Someone came on his show and complained that whatever training he took blamed him, as a white man, so he got up and walked out.
Bill Maher constantly brings up this example whenever anyone brings up diversity training. "Training that blames the white people in attendance directly that they are the cause of the problem??!!"
I've been through so many diversity trainings that I've lost count. NOT ONE, blamed white people. I think the guest just made it up because it was part of the GOP's attempt to block anything to do with diversity--and Trump soon after banned diversity trainings in government.

Not even close to what happened. It was pressure from Gov Wolfe and not market forces. Try harder next time. A simple Google search would have saved you a post.

I consider myself politically correct but not woke. I define political correctness as not saying something overtly offensive to somebody for something they cannot help (race, ethnicity, gender, disability). Wokeness for me involves in-depth searching to find a possible connection between something somebody said to try desperately to link it to something racist, etc. frequently in the most obscure fashion possible.
