Six spring breaking West Point football players overdose on fentanyl-laced cocaine
Six students on spring break in Fort Lauderdale who overdosed on cocaine laced with fentanyl and were hospitalized on Thursday have been identified as West Point football players.
Two of the cadets had not ingested the drugs but were overcome by the effects of fentanyl when they attempted to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on their sickened friends.
'The U.S. Military Academy is aware of the situation involving West Point cadets, which occurred Thursday night in Wilton Manors, FL,' a West Point spokesperson said in an email. 'The incident is currently under investigation and no other details are available at this time.'
News helicopter video shows paramedics converging on the front yard of a short-term vacation rental home on NW 29th Court in Wilton Manors, where multiple people were found in cardiac arrest at 5pm.
Footage from the scene shows first responders administering first aid and placing several individuals onto stretchers.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Gollan told Local10 that two of the people who overdosed were sickened because they tried to perform CPR on the initial four overdose victims. He said the opioid-overdose-reversing drug naloxone, which is sold under the brand name Narcan, was administered to revive the victims.
Neighbors in Wilton Manors told the Sun-Sentinel that the West Point cadets had been staying at the rental property for several days, and that on Wednesday night police were called for an unspecified reason.
Two local residents said they have repeatedly complained to the managers of the vacation property about excessive noise and rowdy parties.
Meanwhile, Florida and Fort Lauderdale are bracing for 'triple' the amount of visitors compared to last year as tens of thousands of students prepare to celebrate the first Spring Break in the US free of COVID rules.

Assuming they didn't know anything about the area and picked the rental because it's all they could find/afford, I wonder if they ever figured out what kind of place Wilton Manors is.

You got me curious so I looked it up.

In terms of political leanings, the Air Force Academy is the most right-wing, next West Point, then Annapolis.

R51, another way to look at it is that these soldiers are not at war, and we’re just trying to party — which is exactly what young people should be doing. I understand why you posted it, I just think a more positive way to see it is that our youth can be carefree because we aren’t at war, and that’s a good thing. I am (like you) devastated at what is happening in Ukraine. Their youth are suffering and traumatized. All we can do is keep supporting them. My son has a connection to “Wali” the Canadian sniper who is on the frontlines. We are doing all we can to support the cause of the incredible, courageous Ukrainian people.

Guys and gals…
Aren’t we all really grateful we went through our self-destructive, partying stages , way back in the day, when coke was actually still good and sometimes almost pure?
I’ve had some AMAZING coke in my early 20s, and I’m sure most of us here over 45 have as well.
A truly horrible drug to get addicted to, but I don’t know anyone but one person who allegedly died of cocaine.
It’s fucking WILD AF out there nowadays. I’m so grateful I’m not out there doing shit like this as a youngin’ now.
It’s interesting that the others who attempted to perform CPR also ODed, which makes sense if the CPR patients snorted it.
Wow.
People are still dropping like flies all over the place over fentanyl.
And you know what?
I notice the news rarely writes about it anymore unless it’s something like this.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a mass fentanyl overdose incident involving five cadets from West Point, a prestigious military academy in New York.
Axel Giovany Casseus was arrested on cocaine trafficking charges Friday, a day after the cadets and two other people reportedly overdosed on fentanyl-laced cocaine while spending spring break in Florida, according to an arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office obtained by NBC News on Saturday.
Casseus supposedly supplied the narcotics that caused the mass overdose on Thursday afternoon while the spring breakers were staying on a rental home in the city of Wilton Manors, according to the arrest report.
Four of the West Point cadets, all men, were found in cardiac arrest in the rental home's front yard. Two were revived using Narcan, an emergency overdose treatment, and rushed to a local hospital.

Can someone tell this over-the-hill former party person why dealers lace coke with fentanyl? Is it supposed to get buyers addicted to an opioid high, or are people now looking for an opioid high? In my day it was supposedly laced with baking soda or drano.

It isn't necessarily the "dealer" who does it. Most likely it's at a point in the drug market chain where no one is thinking about the end user.

This is from yesterday (March 12):
[quote]An Army football player and West Point cadets were among the victims of a fentanyl overdose at a Wilton Manors vacation rental home that left six spring breakers hospitalized including two in critical condition, officials said Friday.
[quote]According to a statement from West Point, four cadets were taken to the hospital, including the football player. Of the six involved in the incident, one person was not taken to hospital and one was not a cadet.
[quote]The two cadets in critical condition remained intubated in intensive care units after spending the night at local hospitals, Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Gollan said Friday. At least one patient was treated and released, Gollan said.
[quote]A West Point official told The Associated Press that one of the cadets who was hospitalized is an Army football player. The official said another football player at the house was not hospitalized. The official had no further information and could not give the sickened player's condition.

My stepsons are in their 20s, and I know they dabble with drugs—not heavy shit, I don’t think? But still, the Fentanyl now scares me. They have lost friends in the last couple of years, from “good” families, good schools, etc., because they bought some shit laced with Fentanyl. One was found in his car in the Trader Joe’s parking lot! Also, my sweet nephew is in rehab now because he almost OD’d. Last year, my friend’s son was “partying” with friends and had a bad reaction and died. It’s just heartbreaking that these kids who have everything to live for are being so stupid.
