Volkswagen Introduces Update to its Famous Hippy Van

Did anyone grow up with one of the old ones?

by Anonymousreply 1March 10, 2022 8:39 PM

Oh geez, it's a minivan. No thanks

by Anonymousreply 2March 10, 2022 8:41 PM

Oh no. I LOVE it.

My parents had one, R1. We have a few family photos of them road tripping with infant me but they sold it as more kids came along and I have no memories of it. My brother bought one at 18 and also road tripped around Canada with his gf for a few years before selling it. I'm aware of there being a whole sort of lifestyle or ethos or something around these vans but for some reason I never caught the bug.

I don't much like VWs anymore - I liked the old days when they had rubbery seats and stuff like that.

by Anonymousreply 5March 10, 2022 8:49 PM

I need interior pics with the seats down.

by Anonymousreply 6March 10, 2022 8:50 PM

They're very expensive.

by Anonymousreply 7March 10, 2022 8:51 PM

I got turned off of VW when a family friend was busting a gut (as we say in the South) to get one of the new VW Beetles about x20 years ago. She had so many mechanical problems and finally sold the lemon after only a couple of years. They're running on fumes catering to the nostalgia market.

by Anonymousreply 8March 10, 2022 8:55 PM

From People's Car to luxe item. Pfft. Someone in Asia will eat VW's fucking lunch if they think this market is theirs alone. C'mon Toyota you can do it better, faster, cheaper!

Yes!

It’s cute, but their cars are crap now. My parents had a VW 240 DL wagon; bought it the year I was born, worked great. They gave it to my brother when I was 15; still worked fine. They don’t make their cars with the capability of lasting decades anymore.

by Anonymousreply 11March 10, 2022 9:28 PM

Eh, VW's always been crap. Sometimes you got lucky with one that lasted.

by Anonymousreply 12March 10, 2022 9:42 PM

The bug redesign they did was a lot more faithful to the original designs. But they both cost a fortune, thus completely missing the point. They should call them RichFuckWagens.

Are you by any chance referring to a VOLVO 240 DL?

Ah yes, the 240 wagon. The luxury slumming automobile of choice for the academic of the 80s. Replaced by the Subaru Outback where I live.

by Anonymousreply 15March 11, 2022 2:53 AM

^ Yes, the 240D was what liberal Dems drove back in the day
