It’s much easier for Ukrainians to integrate into neighboring countries because they have similar values and cultures. It’s much harder for a country to absorb people who have vastly different sensibilities.

I love observing political winds and trends. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is being hailed a hero now. The former comedian swept to power in 2019 on a massive popular wave winning 73% of the vote as he promised to deal with his country's endemic corruption. However, in another reminder of the buyer's remorse that often comes with electing celebrities, he got stuck in the mud and his approval had sunk to the 20s by January 2022. The Russian invasion of Ukraine gave him a new lease with American political consultants taking control of his messaging, he has definitely won the information war against Russians, earned worldwide admiration manifesting in global calls for him to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

However, I'm curious as to how he'll look after the fog of war. Will he be judged a hero or as the man whose ego, stubbornness and lack of dipolamatic skills and experience brought unnecessary and avoidable destruction to his country? Whether people like to admit it or not, the Russians have been warning about NATO expansion to their borders for two decades now, always dismissed by the West because Russia was seen as a declining empire that hit rock bottom in the 1990s still seen as weak by the west until it started its gradual resurgence under Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Zelenskyy (with the West's encouragement) stoked these provocations until 2021 the bear got cornered and started growling and Zelenskyy belatedly started frantically dialling back the rhetoric and the bear finally lashed out in 2022.

Did Zelenskyy provoke this war or did it happen anyway in spite of his efforts? Whatever happens, my guess is in a few years, he'll become as unpopular as that other Western darling Mikhail Gorbachev (the fat fuck is still alive, by the way) is in Russia.

This isn't about the refugees. They aren't the message, they are the messengers. The West, as the article below from politico.eu so sapiently outlines, is failing the very world order that Reid and anyone of any colour fortunate enough to be born in northern and western Europe, and America, enjoy.

The invasion of Ukraine represents something that other conflicts haven't: the West's unwillingness even to defend itself if it involves risks.
