Rosamund Pike is just too cold for American audiences. Even if an actress is a raging bitch behind the scenes, she has to be able to convincingly fake sweet girl next door to win over the people reading hordes. The one exception to this rule is Nicole Kidman. Icebox but very successful.

It actually kind of bizarre how interchangeable the entire group of brunette early 20s to late 30s British actresses are. They all have the EXACT same bland screen presences; you could have cast any of them in any of their roles and gotten the same end product. And it's specifically the brunette ones; British blondes like Rosemund Pike, Anna Taylor-Joy, Jodie Comer, and Florence Pugh all have very distinct energies that add a little something extra to their performances. Even Lily James has discovered how to lean into a natural vulnerable quality she has, to add depth to her performances (though it took her AWHILE to figure it out).

Rosamund Pike is not a versatile actress. She was good as a cold bitch in I Care a Lot, but Gone Girl required a more nuanced take, so that the reveal is shocking. She signalled psycho bitch from the start.

Rosamund Pike is firmly established now as the Go-To actress for cold psychopath characters. She brings the crazy, maybe a bit TOO reliably. I think of her as the new Amanda Peat.

That's because Andrea disappears into each character she plays like our Melissa Leo. That's not star making quality but it certainly helps as an actress and she's a very good one.

I never thought of Melissa Leo as much of a chameleon, R103. But if Riseborough is any kind of a promotion whore as Leo was in her Oscar groveling, Riseborough will win. (Of course we know she really won't; the nomination is definitely the award here.)
