WHET Heather Headley?

Her vocals on the Aida soundtrack are incredible. She was expected to be the next big thing. What happened? I heard different rumors at the time. The big one was that she hated musical theater and was open about using it as a springboard towards mainstream success that never came. also heard whisperings about work ethic and a displeasure for the “certain type of men” who populate musical theater.

What was it? Does anyone have the scoop?

Heather’s voice indeed is phenomenal. She’s acting more in recent years. HH is one of the leads in Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias.”

by Anonymousreply 1March 7, 2022 6:19 PM

She played Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, in high school. Completely professional.

by Anonymousreply 2March 7, 2022 6:24 PM

She was absolutely phenomenal in The Color Purple when she took over for JHud a few years ago. She and Erivo together were astonishingly good.

by Anonymousreply 3March 7, 2022 6:28 PM

Her voice sounded like hammered dog shit in that Dreamgirls concert with Lilias and Audra.

by Anonymousreply 4March 7, 2022 6:30 PM

r4

Headley seems to be one of those people that could belt broadway standards, night after night, no problem.

but moves to other genres and loses her shit.

coincidentally, her voice has ended up that way on all her rnb albums. . . even from way back when.

so, one might question is it because her worse critics have been black and she forces herself into those myopic roles in a bid to show she's not typecast, she stresses her voice out the rest of the time, she's just old, she can't do shit without direction, etc, etc.

She was phenomenal in THE.BODYGUARD in the West End. Best individual musical theater performance I’ve ever seen. I’m 47. As was said, she did THE COLOR PURPLE. She also had a pop singing career after AIDA. She was also in some concert that ran on Bway with some group, I can’t remember their name, She was in the movie Respect and is currently a regular on a TV show.

How vivid.

She's hilariously funny on the "Dreamgirls" concert recording, though I agree her voice sounds terrible for "Ain't No Party" (the most underrated song in the score). But she cracks me up when she sasses both Effie and Jimmy Early.

I don't know, but this song of hers has been my jam since high school.

she's one of the leads in Sweet magnolias on Netflix, now iin its 2nd season

She was staggering in Color Purple

by Anonymousreply 10March 7, 2022 7:18 PM

I just realized after doing all of that celebration of the Black man, Black love, and Black families in her "He Is" video she still ended up marrying a White dude. Alrighty then.

sorry r1 you already said that

OP I've only heard lovely things about her as a colleague, people love her sweet and kind. Bodyguard in London killed her vocally and she missed a lot and that was troublesome but otherwise people in shows seem to adore her.

by Anonymousreply 12March 7, 2022 8:06 PM

This is my HH jam. I still listen to it to this day…

The lyrics to that song at r13 always cracked me and my mom up. I remember when it first came on the radio and when the chorus dropped, "In my mind, I'll always be his lady," my mom twisted her face up and shrieked, "In my mind?? Now you know she sounds crazy. That man done moved on and she's still mentally stuck in the relationship."

That's how you get stalkers.

by Anonymousreply 14March 7, 2022 8:38 PM

Apparently, r13, HH's version is actually a cover from Shannon Sanders. Needless to say, the guy version sounds even more stalkerish.

I'm scared.

Vocally to me she’s sort of like the lovechild of Patti Lupone and Anita Baker - I think she would have had much better luck as a recording artist had she come on the scene in the eighties or nineties. The early aughts were a lot of whispering cooing behind rappers.

When in the right part, like Shug Avery in the Color Purple revival, she’s astonishing. Lorrell in Dreamgirls was simply too high for her - it needs a bright Patti LaBelle-type exceptional high belt and Headley doesn’t have that type of voice. Dreamgirls did however prove that she is a surprisingly versatile actress - nobody was expecting her to be so funny.

What musical role should she returned to Broadway in

by Anonymousreply 17March 8, 2022 12:32 AM

Isn’t she playing the Witch in Into the Woods at City Center?

by Anonymousreply 18March 8, 2022 1:30 AM

I believe she stepped away from her career from her career for a handful of years when her kids were young. She was outstanding in The Color Purple.

by Anonymousreply 19March 8, 2022 1:40 AM

Yes r19 and she already played the part at the Muny

r17- I would love to see her return to Broadway in THE BODYGUARD. Give her a matinee alternate so she can just do 6 shows a week and bring in a show doctor to iron out the kinks. Her performance is phenomenal.

by Anonymousreply 21March 8, 2022 8:37 AM

She is a Christian and a devout and virtue signaling one. She has a problem with everyone who has not accepted some dead Jew as their personal lord and flavor saver.

by Anonymousreply 22March 8, 2022 8:45 AM

Maybe she just had a problem with you r22. She's devout but the rest of your post is BS

by Anonymousreply 23March 8, 2022 12:17 PM

R22, she's devout, but the rest of what you claim is bullshit. She's a warm, kind person to work with.

She’s a cunt.

Does anyone have a link to the video of Heather shitting the bed vocally at a benefit performance. She's backed by a choir onstage. It was on Youtube for years.

by Anonymousreply 26March 8, 2022 4:41 PM

The video was her concept? Anyway, some of you need to look up the word "preference."

In a lifetime of theatergoing seeing Heather Headley and Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple is definitely one of the all time highs.

by Anonymousreply 35March 9, 2022 6:54 AM

I have tickets to see her as The Witch and Sarah Bareilles as The Bakers Wife in Into the Woods in May. Can't wait.
