Darryl has a bar/music venue north of NYC in Pawling called Darryl’s House.
I know of someone who worked for him. I didn’t get the impression that he was always the easiest person but this person continued working for him for a while so I assume he’s okay.
I understand that ex-wives walked off with nice amounts of his money.

Darryl's reputation for being a massive prick is pretty well known. Just read or watch any interview with him. "Prickly" is putting it mildly. On one of those "Daryl's House" shows, the special guest is Kenny Loggins. At one point, they are talking about Kenny's big movie soundtrack smash hits. All Daryl was interested in was the chart positions and the money while Kenny was all about the art and expression, man. After a few minutes you can tell that Kenny gets annoyed with Daryl though Daryl may have just been fucking with Kenny to get a reaction out of him.
Daryl doesn't seem like a guy I'd want to spend time with.

I love when people say shit like this. Hall is 76 and Oates is 74. What would you like for them to look like? If they got tons of plastic surgery, you'd be calling them out on not aging naturally.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 7, 2022 5:34 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 7, 2022 9:15 PM |
I remember reading an interview with Daryl Hall a long time ago in which he admitted that he had hooked up with a guy or two in his younger days. He was then asked if Oates was one of the guys he'd hooked up with and he said no, that Oates wasn't his type. He was "too dark and short". I don't recall reading or hearing anything from Oates on the subject of his sexuality.
The gay rumors came directly from that silver foil album cover. They'd put out several albums already on Atlantic, to very little success, even though they were obviously very talented. When they moved to RCA, somebody there thought it would be a great idea to market them as Bowie-esque glitter rockers and had them all dolled up in makeup and looking very effeminate for the cover of their RCA debut. They hated the idea, but they went along with it because they were desperate.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 7, 2022 9:22 PM |
R48 The interview is from Rolling Stone, from either 1983 or 1985.
There is a Medium article that references the interview and its relevant passage, and says it's from '83, but I can't find any evidence of a 1983 RS article on H&O.
There was a big RS feature on them in January1985, which I think is probably the one, but you can only read it if you have a subscription, which I don't.
In any case the quote by Daryl Hall, as referenced in the Medium article, is as follows.
"The idea of sex with a man doesn't turn me off, but I don't express it. I satisfied my curiosity about that years ago...Men don't particularly turn me on. And no, John and I have never been lovers. He's not my type. Too short and dark."
The 1985 RS article is called "Hall and Oates: The Self-Righteous Brothers" if you have a subscription and want to read it (again, not 100% sure that's the article with the quote in question, but I think it probably is.)
The Medium article that references the quote is linked below.

I always felt sorry for John Oates. He was like the Captain, or Andrew Ridgely, or Richard Carpenter, or Florence LaRue , or James Griffin (of Bread). You know they contributed to the act, you're just not really sure how. Daryl Hall sang lead on 90% of the group's hits, and all of their seven number one songs.

from Wikipedia:
[quote]John William Oates (born April 7, 1948)[1] is an American musician, best known as half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates, with Daryl Hall. He has played rock, R&B, and soul music, acting as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer.
Although Oates' main role in the duo is being the guitarist, he also co-wrote many of the top 10 songs that they recorded, including: "Sara Smile" (referring to Hall's then-girlfriend, Sara Allen), "She's Gone", and "Out of Touch", as well as "You Make My Dreams", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Adult Education". He also sang lead vocals on several more singles in the Hot 100, such as "How Does It Feel to Be Back", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (a remake of the 1965 song performed by the Righteous Brothers), and "Possession Obsession". In 1986, Oates contributed the song "(She's the) Shape of Things to Come" on the soundtrack to the 1986 film About Last Night. He also co-wrote and sang backup on the song "Electric Blue", recorded by the Australian band Icehouse, which was a Billboard top 10 hit.

I remember in the "Big Bang Boom" era, they appeared on one of the big awards shows (either the Grammys or the American Music Awards) and performed their current hit, which was "Method of Modern Love" live, and they sounded unbelievably bad.
Granted, it's not one of their best songs, and it seems like it would be hard to sing, but still, they sucked hard.

People tended to think Oates didn't contribute much, but when Daryl tried to go solo no one was interested (and when they got back together in the late 80s people still weren't interested).
They had an interesting career trajectory. Very erratic/cult success from 1972 to 1980 (Hall even collaborated with Robert Fripp of King Crimson), then 12 straight Top 10 hits from 1981 to 1984, then it was pretty much over.

A couple of years ago, Daryl Hall was on a podcast. I think it might have been Alec Baldwin's (I know, I know). He claimed that he did almost all of the songwriting, and that Oates' songwriting credits were more of a business arrangement than an actual reflection of who did what. I remember thinking that was a pretty shitty thing to say.
I would characterize them as cult artists from '72 through '75, then pretty solid hitmakers from '76-'79. They weren't a huge chart presence in the latter part of the 70's, but they did manage to keep themselves in the game with a couple of now-forgotten top 20 singles in '78 ("It's a Laugh) and '79 ("Wait For Me"). They were clearly on a downward slide at that point, though.
Then, out of the blue, they exploded and became one of the biggest acts of the early 80's. Hit after hit from '80 through '85. When they were at their career peak, they decided to take an extended break (3 years), which killed all of their career momentum. When they returned on Arista 3 years later, they managed to eke out a few forgettable hits, but the public had moved on, and they became more or less a nostalgia act by the mid-90's, though some of their songs were of pretty high quality, like 2002's "Do It For Love".

I remember Hall and Oates as having two bluesy ballads in the Seventies (She's Gone and Sarah Smile). Later on, they had a number one hit with Rich Girl, but then disappeared again. When they resurfaced in the 80s with their album Voices, their first single was a minor hit (How Does It Feel To Be Back), then their remake of You've Lost That Loving Feeling inched into the top ten, But it was the third single , Kiss On My List, that made them superstars.

In some ways they seem like amateurs who lucked out and made it big.

I met them backstage once and Oates was very friendly and personable. Hall has a reputation for being an asshole for a reason. He was so unpleasant to everyone around him. He really thought that he was better than everyone else.
He was just a pop singer who sang catchy tunes when in his own mind, he thought he was a serious, influential, musical genius.

"Darryl's reputation for being a massive prick is pretty well known. Just read or watch any interview with him. "Prickly" is putting it mildly." Part of what I write below is from a former H&O thread.
I like Darryl - he often gives a good interview. Like his music, loved Darryl's house, but yeah, he can be a massive prick. He was once talking about being appreciated in the Black community. Hall and Oates was popular among Black people, but sometimes Black DJs, commentators, fans, would peg HO as "blue-eyed soul." Darryl had a valid point about not wanting to be pigeonholed and if fans liked the music, why tie it to race? But, the term blue-eyed soul, used by black people, has never been an insult. It's more a term of endearment for artists like Teena Marie and Hall and Oates, and he knows that. Yet, he got super pissy, went off on a big rant about it as if people celebrating his music and buying his albums made him a victim just because sometimes that description was used. Then he said something about how HO was the first group to really ever do R&B/pop crossover or something. It made no sense; they weren't. He's thoughtful and interesting, and also incredibly full of himself.

Yes, both. 1984's Swept Away single and album.
He and Sara Allen wrote it. He does some ad-lib background singing near the end of the song.
