Both Pattinson and Kravitz are great. Pattinson is rather emo, fragile, and brooding, but it works in this role. Kravitz is sizzling, nimble, physical, and one of the only non-dark elements of the movie. She inject the movie with sexy, positive relief. Her chemistry with Pattinson is palpable
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 6, 2022 3:46 PM |
It's good R3, it's just not for everyone. It's a very different take on Batman from Nolan or Snyder so you have to be prepared for a slower, more atmospheric movie with a more psychological thriller vibe.
It's more Fincher than Marvel or DC.

If we’re judging Batman’s mouth/chin hotness, Pattinson is the best so far. He has a cute larger upper lip, so he looks kinda pouty. Keaton was also solid. Bale had the same shaped lips as Pattinson, but his ridiculous voice and short stature dulled the effect. Kilmer was hideous. And Clooney’s mouth/chin wasn’t memorable, although he’s a beautiful man generally.

Where writing and performances are concerned, I've heard Paul Dano's Riddler is excellent, with the Kravitz Catwoman and Farrell's Penguin being just alright. "Batman" (and not the character) is the only comic/superhero-oriented material I enjoy. I have said here that I won't be seeing it. But two friends saw it two nights ago, and enjoyed it. So, who knows. Maybe, or maybe not. If I get around to it in a few weeks, I'll take in a matinee.

R23, Unchartered is a hit
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 7, 2022 12:50 PM |
I enjoyed the movie for the most part, but while Pattinson was the best Batman (my opinion), he was the absolute worst Bruce Wayne. It’s the reverse of Christian Bale, who was the best Bruce Wayne (my opinion), and the 2nd worst Batman (behind Affleck).
Kravitz surprised me. She didn’t clear the extremely high bar set by Michelle Pfieffer, but she was still captivating. The only unique thing she really brought to the role was a badass runway-style walk that would put Naomi Campbell to shame. But I tended to forget she was an established character (Selina Kyle/Catwoman)…
Collin Farrell was….wow. I couldn’t believe it was the same man I’ve wanted to fuck for the past 20 years.

R26 or, rather, "aberrant."
I'm surprised it did this well, I didn't get a sense that there was a lot of genuine excitement for it (as opposed to PR). I thought it would make money just by virtue of being a superhero movie, but I thought it would be more modest opening like Eternals.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 7, 2022 12:57 PM |
Kravitz is really good here. I don’t want to review her in a sexist frame, but her sensuality it jjust so alluring in this role. She and Patterson have explosive chemistry together.

Anne Hathaway was an even worse Catwoman than Halle Berry. She was completely void of any sensuality or charm. That said, Zoe Kravitz looks significantly younger than her true age, and at 23/24 she would’ve looked ridiculous opposite a nearly 40 Christian Bale.
Oh, and even though Zoe is way prettier, I thought she resembled Robert Pattinson’s ex-fiancée, FKA Twigs in some scenes…and wondered if that contributed to the chemistry.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 7, 2022 1:28 PM |

[quote]Not sure I would call it a superhero flick. It reminded me of Se7en.
Matt Reeves drew from "Chinatown" but to me the film is more in line with "Se7en" and "Zodiac".
Christopher Nolan wanted his Batman films to be grounded and they were. Ignoring the presence of the Caped Crusader, "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" felt like gritty 70s crime films. But Reeves went even further in keeping it grounded.
I see a lot of complaints about the runtime but it's only eleven minutes longer than "The Dark Knight Rises". I didn't look up the runtime ahead of the film so I was surprised at the time when it was finally over. I felt every bit of TDKR's runtime.

I recognize it as technically good filmmaking in a lot of ways, but I kind of hated it. It’s unbelievably depressing and, as others have said, completely humorless. I thought Kravitz was especially weak and by far the worst Catwoman. Where’s the wit? Cleverness?

I wonder if Jason helped her get the part. Hollywood has been trying to make Zoe a thing for over a decade now and she's just so bland. I find it very hard to believe that she was really the best choice for Catwoman.

Looper: So, what do fans really think of Zoë Kravitz's portrayal of Catwoman in "The Batman?" They've taken to Twitter in droves to offer up their assessments of Kravitz's performance. Twitter user @catwomanarchive wrote, "as dedicated catwoman fans, we can say [without] exaggeration that #thebatman gives us the best catwoman in history — a fully-realized, loving portrayal of selina, from her most heroic to her most vengeful, delicately handling her selfish heart and a hidden potential to be greater." That's high praise from this user whose thread is an homage to the DC character. We aren't about to disparage Newmar's, Kitt's (oh, that growl), or Meriwether's more campy performances. After all, they didn't have the benefit of scripts that provided Catwoman with the depth she deserves.
Plenty of Batman fans agree with the rave review of Kravitz's performance, including @kavionmontes, who tweeted, "She was one of my fav parts of the movie. Every movement she made, the way she talked. She was Selina Kyle/catwoman to me." Another supporter of @catwomanarchive's praise of Kravitz is @lilaina87, who replied, "100% most authentic, organic, true-to-comics live-action selina kyle i've ever seen. zoë is so effortless." "She was everything and more," tweeted @NellysBurner.
"The Batman" is rapidly expanding Kravitz's fanbase. "i'm obsessed with her now !!" wrote @jerrythevirgo.

Also hated how they gave Kravitz an out of place line about the white supremacist assholes who she’s fighting. Three quarters of the people in the movie seem like shitty people, but there’s nothing in the script to make you think white supremacy or race at all is a driving factor. It felt out of place and awkward.

That part was pretty cringey, R68. Plus, she refers to “the commissioner” in her rant…and while he is white in the film, most people who’ve seen a Batman movie associate Jim Gordon as being the commissioner (and he was played by a black man).

I say it is. The cinematography is fantastic. I don’t think TV really captures it.
Wish the box office tallies were better..WB is hobbling itself by shrinking the theatrical window to 45 days. With such a short turnaround from theater to HBO Max people are just waiting to watch at home. If there was a 90 day wait, I think more would have ventured out to the theater.

"The Batman" Will Cross $200 Million Today After 8 Days, Heads to Huge Second Weekend via @showbiz411
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 12, 2022 4:58 PM |
Warner’s “The Batman” scared up a surprising $18 million Friday night. That brings Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, The Couple of the Month, to the point of crossing $200 million perhaps this very moment. By the time the weekend is over, “The Batman” should be up around $240 million.
Obviously, the second timers are kicking in, going back for more and looking for things they hadn’t seen the first time around. And they’re bringing first timers who are finally done with “Spider Man” after 20 viewings.
Oh, “Spider Man”? It’s “only” going to cross $790 million tomorrow, and then head for $800 mil this week.
There are no new releases this week except for “The Adam Project” on Netflix, which has a 69 on Rotten Tomatoes. I’ve never seen such loathing for a film as more reviews come in. The newest one calls it “junk.” What to watch at home? “Mrs Maisel,” “Inventing Anna,” “Billions.” “Ozark,” etc…

Just saw it on the Ultra Super Screen with Dolby. Damn, I always forget that once an action movie starts on those mega-screens I forget the sound can be overwhelming. I had my fingers in my ears during the car chase.
I liked it, although I'll be the millionth person complain about its length. It easily could have been trimmed by 15 or 20 minutes and not lost a beat.
John Turturro. Wow. His charisma jumped off the screen at me. I'm used to seeing him in lighter roles.
That's the first movie I ever saw with Pattinson. Now, let's see if he's got the chops for a genre that takes real talent- a comedy. I need a palate cleanser from him after his grim, dour Batman.
Anyway, all the leads were good. There were, of course, ridiculous moments but I submitted to ridiculousness by watching a film about a guy who wears a bat cape.
SPOILER QUESTION AHEAD-
Was that the Joker the Riddler was talking to in the next cell over; a scene that if it was, should have been after the credits not before them.

I was spoiled about the reveal. When Barry Keoghan was cast the press release stated that he was going to play a cop. Then two months or so before the release sites reported that Keoghan was playing The Joker and that after test screenings WB was going to cut him out of it. So I was just waiting for him to pop up. Didn't expect it to be at the very end. Matt Reeves said he only had one pivotal scene with Batman, but it had to be more than one scene. If memory serves he got fourth billing behind Dano.

I saw it today. I thought it was pretty good. It's long at 3 hours, but going to the theater post-covid still feels novel, so I didn't mind it particularly. Pattinson's Bruce Wayne/Batman is a floppy-haired, PTSD-neurotic man child, absolutely none of the debonair swagger of the previous Waynes, but it works for the part.
I actually like how they handled the Selina Kyle line - it's true to the overall mood and story that Selina would be a stripper/bartender of indeterminate ethnicity with a female lover at home and major resentment against white guys in powerful positions. I thought it worked. She called her lover "Baby," that was pretty obvious. I thought it was good they didn't just try to reboot the Michelle Pfeiffer (I-C-O-N-I-C) Catwoman (which will never be surpassed IMO) and gave her an edgier side, which made me forget the previous crackpots (Hathaway and Berry) who have worn the catsuit.
One thing that annoyed me was the constant deluge of rain in Gotham City. It rained to the point of cliche. This would have been a Biblically flooded city IRL. A small thing, but it irritated me.
I liked the all-star cast: Jeffrey Wright, Turturro, Andy Serkis, Paul Dano, Peter Sarsgaard. Less intriguing actors in those supporting roles would have sunk the film.

Deadline: Of course, Warner Bros.’ The Batman is No. 1 with a third weekend of $36.8M, down a very good 45%, and sending its running total to $300.1M by EOD. Among third weekends at the box office for Warner Bros, The Batman‘s is the third-best, after Dark Knight ($42.6M) and Wonder Woman ($41.2M). People love this movie. Just another $31M and The Batman will have surpassed 2015’s Batman v. Superman‘s domestic B.O. ($330.3M); another $35M until it clocks past Aquaman ($335.1M). Friday for The Batman came in at 10.6M, -43% from a week ago.
