"I did not consent" Anti-circumcision protest in Texas
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 19, 2022 11:01 PM |
I do think it's a slightly barbaric practice. Unless the boy/man has a medical issue, it's totally unnecessary and only leads to a loss of sensation.
Now let the delusional, incorrect comments about uncircumcised hygiene horrors begin!

What are these fashionable reasons that are so obvious?

Circumcision exists to control men's sexuality. Some men have a fetish for it and like it but some didn't consent like the guy in op's article. I think the choice should be with the individual who owns the penis because the person who performs the circumcision and the parent/s who allow it will be dead someday while the man has to live with their permanent alteration of his body. If you like circumcision go have one when you are an adult but forcing things on someone is never good. I am pro-choice for all genders xoxo.

It's more painful and more complicated to be circumcised as an adult, R9.
Circumcision became popular in the U.S. because people thought it would discourage boys from masturbating. From the wikipedia article on masturbation:
"Circumcision did not become a common medical procedure in the Anglophone world until the late 19th century. At that time, British and American doctors began recommending it in a mistaken belief it would act as a deterrent to masturbation. Prior to the 20th century, masturbation was believed to be the cause of a wide range of physical and mental illnesses including epilepsy, paralysis, impotence, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, feeblemindedness, and insanity."

I wonder if boys are still being cut when insurance no longer pays for it as it is an unnecessary procedure. It appears that more boys in porn are uncut and not all from outside the US.

The hygiene argument is ridiculous and the whole idea of the mutilation of a highly sensitive part of a baby boy is both demented and abusive.
It needs to stop.

There's a special place in hell reserved for peepee cutters. Circumcision is only helpful for males with very tight foreskins.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 6, 2022 6:27 PM |
My older brother and I were circumcised before we left the hospital. Our younger brother wasn't. He was a preemie and not in good health, so my parents were advised to not have him circumcised until he was several months older. My parents decided to leave him intact. When he was 13 he developed a problem and had to undergo a circumcision. To this day he still claims it was the worst pain he's ever felt and reminds our brother and me how lucky we were to have it done as newborns. He's got two sons and both are cut, but he had to battle his wife and their doctor who were against it.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 6, 2022 7:15 PM |
R36 Why would he cut them when he was the one who needed it in the past? Most men on earth are not circumcised and the argument to circumcise boys by default just in case they would have to be circumcised anyway is ridiculous because most men don't need the procedure and maybe even he himself could have tried something else before getting the cut. R16 makes a similar dumb argument. Yes, it might be more painful because when you are older you are more aware of it but as I said, the majority of men live and die with their foreskins and will never have a problem. We also don't remove other body parts just in case they could be a problem in the future (Altough some countries did this with tonsils which turns out was an unwise decision too).
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 6, 2022 7:58 PM |
Your reading comprehension is terrible, dumb R37. I'm arguing with R9 who said that males should decide whether to be circumcised or not when they're adults. I said that the circumcision of adult males is more painful and complicated, ie. R9's proposal is not practical. That doesn't mean I'm arguing for the routine circumcision of all male babies.
I said that circumcision became popular in the U.S. as a means of discouraging masturbation. Obviously it doesn't work so it's a bogus reason. I am not pro circumcision. I think it's unnecessary in the vast majority of males. Human males wouldn't have evolved with foreskins if they were a significant detriment to our health.

Probably a lot of Jews and Muslims on this thread who are defending their religious practices and don't want to accept that it is unnecessary and painful to the baby.

Circumcision was used as a marker to single out Jews in nazi Germany and Muslims in the partition of India. Only an object of ridicule until then, it became useful in identifying Jews and Muslims for massacre.
Universal circumcision is therefore protection against future persecution. Of course, not mutilating dick is a simpler option.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 7, 2022 6:57 AM |
True, R43, but people who do it for religious reasons will always downplay how much it hurts or say the pain is momentary. They'll say male babies that young will start crying over the smallest thing. And they'll exaggerate the health benefits of circumcision.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 7, 2022 7:49 AM |
[quote]R44 Are you more anti-circ or anti-religion?
Depends on the religion, R46. I assume every religion has its fundamentalists who can do a lot of harm.
The bottom line is that people have the freedom to practice their religions and parents have the freedom to choose whether their sons get circumcised or not, though I imagine if Jewish or Muslim parents left their sons uncut, that would cause major problems. They would have to belong to a very liberal branch of Judaism or Islam for it to not be a problem.
Medical professionals should educate the public about the fallacies about circumcision and then parents get to choose. I guess circumcision isn't the world's biggest problem if it's done by a properly trained doctor or mohel, etc. Obviously boys don't remember the pain of circumcision. Female circumcision in certain African cultures is more of a problem and can cause serious health problems. I still think male circumcision is completely unnecessary. Why cause a male baby any unnecessary pain even if they won't remember later on?

Female circumcision - more correctly called Female Genital Mutilation - is a regular topic on our safeguarding training courses (I'm an Early Years, or Kindergarten, teacher). If we see it, or a family member says it's going to happen, we have to call the police. If we even suspect it may be inflicted on a girl, such as a trip to Somalia is planned for the family, we call the police. They can get a court order preventing the family from taking the child out of the country.
But anyway, male circumcision became an issue at my school, when a Muslim Mum tried to take her boys - neither of whom were circumcised - to Pakistan, against the wishes of her ex-husband, a Christian. He knew what she was planning and called Children's Services and got a court order preventing her from taking the boys to away until they could sort things out. She changed her story, said it was only a family visit. The boys came back circumcised.
As it's not illegal, I assumed there wasn't anything the Dad could do about it, but then the elder boy (who was coming up 5) got repeated infections on the wound (he had been cut badly), and that combined with some other issues with Mum made a case for neglect and he eventually won custody. A very messy and distressing case for the children - I hope they're settled and safe now.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 7, 2022 10:28 AM |
I had to be circumcised as an adult and, even though that gave me greater latitude sexually than I had previously had, you do notice the absence of the foreskin, which helps spread the precum over the head and which creates friction on the head in a pleasant way. Perhaps my experience is unrepresentative in that I did have phimosis - and I don't regret the circumcision, given my circumstances - but I am against circumcision.
Yes, it gets tricky when you start looking at blanket legal bans, because it is very meaningful to many Jews and a lot of Muslims too but, as far as parents who have no such reason are concerned, they should DEFINITELY leave well enough alone.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 7, 2022 11:54 AM |

Yes, so everyone is circumcised and they can't be singled out any more.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 8, 2022 10:28 AM |
This is beyond ridiculous. The parents should choose what if they want for their children.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 8, 2022 10:55 AM |

I will just say, as a non-American, that the debate on this (insofar as it even exists elsewhere) is much cooler outside of the US and, personally, I think that that may have something to do with the fact that circumcised American men are very invested in justifying what was done to them and telling themselves that they haven't missed out on anything. It must be frustrating to have to face the reality that one was robbed of such an important decision but I do think that a more rational conversation on these things would lead to a very quick and steep decrease in circumcision rates.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 8, 2022 11:26 AM |
R50 male circumcision in third world countries causes problems too. Your argument is dangerous anyway because it could be used to justify female genital mutilation because the hospitals in the west are sanitary.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 8, 2022 5:45 PM |
Jeez, I'd never perform circumcision on a baby, and ai'm against this mandatory circumcision culture, but if you have been circumcised before the age of one and can't even remember having a foreskin, then protesting against YOUR OWN circumcision and being sorry that you have no foreskin is totally USELESS. Protest for the current newborns and not the newborns of 1985 for Christ's Sake.

I honestly don't think American men are that upset about it. For the majority who were circumcised as infants, I can't imagine there's a lot of hand wringing about not having foreskin. It's all they've ever known and it's "normal" in the US.

Wikipedia says that male circumcision significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection among heterosexual men in sub-Saharan Africa but I'm sure we're all talking about males in developed countries.
True, R60, but you can't make male circumcision illegal in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Parents still get to choose.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 8, 2022 6:33 PM |
Hey, R62, this is r59. I'm sure you're right that most American men don't get too exercised over this subject on a day-to-day basis; it's just that, when these things do get discussed, some men who were unnecessarily circumcised do seem to have a hard time accepting the fact that it was unnecessary. I can't speak to the US situation with the experience of someone who's lived through it - I just hope that circumcision ceases to be a matter of course in the US.

R9, female genital mutilation is in a different league than male circumcision. Male circumcision entails the removal of a relatively small piece of flesh. Female GM often entails slicing off the inner and / or outer labia and the clitoris and then sewing up the girl until only a tiny aperture is left for urination and menstruation. I know many posters aren’t experts on those bodily areas but it is truly horrific.
