I miss dancing in music videos

1989/90 was an incredible year for dance in music videos. I mean... just look at the VMA nominees for best choreography.... Paula Abdul's Opposites Attract, Janet's Rhythm Nation, Madonna's Vogue, okay... MC Hammer's Can't Touch This wasn't high art... but it was fun.

I know this thread is going to attract the eternally tiring Madonna vs. Janet trolls -- is it just two assholes arguing with each other? But, I have to say, the award definitely went to the right video. Vogue is maybe my favorite music video ever... the dictionary definition of "iconic". But, Anthony Thomas' choreography for Rhythm Nation is in a class of its own. His work is still brilliant 30+ years later. The way he seamlessly blended street, hip-hop, jazz, Broadway and modern dance all in one was so powerful. And the director was skilled enough to recognize that his lens should capture as much of Thomas' choreography as possible. So many directors seem to fight (or hide) the choreography -- in this case, the director and choreographer were perfectly in sync and their work heightened and already excellent Jam & Lewis production.

There's still excellent dancing but the style now is endless jump cuts so you can't even appreciate it.

I'd love it to come back in a new and interesting way. The problem as I see it was that the same dance moves started being done over and over and over again, year after year. I can remember Alison Goldfrapp on some show in the 00s complaining that the Pussycat Dolls dance moves were passé, even back then.

God, I miss brunch.

Late 80’s/early 90’s was definitely the height of amazing choreography.

Yeah, Rhythm Nation was so iconic, Janet copied the same fucking moves for the next 20 years.

Well dancing in huge. Why wait for music videos? Dancing is all over social media and it’s so much better in my opinion.

I could watch something like this all day

You obviously haven't watched K-pop videos, OP. They are all dancing.

Well, to me you were all goose stepping like a bunch of absurd Lord of the Dance nazis. Nobody could possibly sing during this aerobicize, but by all means let’s shame Milli Vanilli to suicide. The 90s made me retch.

Janet popularized dancing your ass off in videos
