“Informer” (1993) by white reggae/rapper Snow was #1 for seven weeks
Would he be able to release this song in modern day? And if he did would it be the #1 smash it was in 1993?
It’s only a matter of time before twitter teens discover it and make it a huge issue Lmaooooo.
It’s actually a great reggae song. Catchy as fuck. Why didn’t he have another hit after???

His follow up single peaked at 19 and then every song after didn’t chart at all. I always find it sad when a massive debut song happens and then nothing after.
In 2019 he had a song with Daddy Yankee that peaked at 22 though.

I think he went to jail shortly after the album or single was released so wasn’t able to tour or do promotion.

R5 he went to prison after he finished recording the album in NYC. He had to rush to get it done so he could go back to Canada to report to Prison, and he filmed the video before also. The single and album came out while he was still in prison. The album peaked at #5 and went on to sell 8 million copies and by the then he got out of prison the single was a #1 smash, topping the charts for 7 consecutive weeks.
They then rushed a tour and then a bunch of legal drama happened between him and his DJ Marvin Prince, which ended up crashing everything fast.

I don't understand the notion that only black artists can play music inspired by black musicians and only black people can appreciate or understand it. It seems destructively self-limiting. Snow may not be the best example of this mindspace.

The Jim Carrey parody “Imposter” from In Living Color was great

Art belongs to everyone. No such thing as a pure culture. Basic anthropology and sociology. Was recording technology invented in Africa? Electricity? All the instruments used in playing this type of music?

R12 you can create the sounds without the electronic instruments. They’ve been creating music in Africa for hundreds of years.

This young man is hearing it and seeing who sings it for the first time. His facial expression is so funny when he sees Snow come out and start singing reggae. He looks so confused!!! Lmao. He wasn’t expecting a white guy.

The follow up single was better to me but the video is ridiculous and terrible

Not the point, R13. Again, there is no such thing as a pure culture, none of them exist in isolation. Even an “undiscovered” tribe in Brazil has had contact with other indigenous tribes. Reggae music is no different. All of the people of the Caribbean are from other cultures, or a mixture of same. There are no known “undiscovered tribes” left in the Caribbean. Every current group residing there has been influenced by other cultures in music, language, religion, etc.
