Kate McKinnon is Carole Baskin in TV series ‘Joe vs Carole’

This is must see! Looks like great dark humor, which I love! You can’t go wrong with McKinnon!

wrong. i love Kate and to a lesser extent John Cameron, but this looks terrible.

by Anonymousreply 1March 3, 2022 7:42 AM

John Cameron Mitchell is perfect casting.

Kate McKinnon is not an actress. She is a hammy sketch comic who can't inhabit anyone real, as we've seen from her almost universally incorrect impressions of real-life figures.

by Anonymousreply 2March 3, 2022 7:49 AM

I'll probably watch this but there is way too much market over saturation of certain subjects as of late. Do we really need a movie right after we watched a documentary. They're doing the same thing with the Elizabeth Holmes scandal.

by Anonymousreply 3March 3, 2022 9:24 AM

lol McKinnon was originally supposed to play Elizabeth Holmes in The Drop Out. Based on the promos, Amanda Seyfried will probably be better in the Holmes role.

I'll probably watch this show and The Drop Out. McKinnon wasn't a great casting as Carole and Kyle MacLachlan is old enough to be her father. Kate and Kyle have been doing some press together. I wonder if some McKinnon's L Chat fangirls are pissed about her having to promote the show with Kyle. Back when I used to read the old L Chat threads on McKinnon, most of her fangirls were never happy when she played straight women in movies or TV shows or had to do press with male co-stars.

Agreed that McKinnon is a sketch comic, not an actress. We learned this lesson with Chris Farley.

Nicole Sullivan would've made a better Carole Baskin, and would've brought more substance to the part than McKinnon is capable of bringing. She also looks more like the real Carole Baskin. But this is the same reason Nicole Kidman got to play Lucy instead of the far superior Debra Messing. Studios don't cast for performances anymore. They cast a big enough celebrity name to attract Chinese dollars, and once the butts are in seats, it's too late for a refund!

by Anonymousreply 5March 3, 2022 1:41 PM

Kate’s a rug muncher?

by Anonymousreply 6March 3, 2022 1:43 PM

[quote]But this is the same reason Nicole Kidman got to play Lucy instead of the far superior Debra Messing.

Hello Debra.

by Anonymousreply 7March 3, 2022 1:56 PM

R7 Nicole Kidman doesn't look like Lucille Ball, doesn't sound like Lucille Ball, didn't grow up in Lucy's America, and didn't hone her craft as a woman in comedy. To say nothing of her plastic quilt of a face that can't possibly contort into the famously flexible Lucille Ball mug. Kidman is a versatile performer, but she simply lacks the emotional connection to the character. She's just doing a job. A real comic actress - especially in this country - would have that connection. Every woman working in comedy today owes a karmic career debt to Lucille Ball, and they all say so. Messing wanted to play Lucy not for money or award potential, but to repay some of that debt to Lucy and make sure the story was told with the right heart. Can Kidman possibly say the same?

She's as wrong for the part as casting Dakota Fanning to play Henry VIII. But you know those halfwit cocksuckers who run the studios would absolutely make this movie as well, because they like the wattage of that actress' name. Who she plays, or how she performs, is apparently irrelevant. All that matters is getting Nicole's name out there so she can get some award nominations and sell tickets to the shitheads who will watch a snuff film if it has Nicole Kidman's name above the line.

This stupid fucking culture.

by Anonymousreply 8March 3, 2022 2:16 PM

Debra Messing wouldn’t be superior. She’s a one note TV actress.

by Anonymousreply 9March 3, 2022 3:31 PM

Not excited about story - but dying to see what John Cameron Mitchell does with it. He really has not done a lot and I think he could be good.

by Anonymousreply 10March 3, 2022 3:39 PM

I like Kate McKinnon but agree she’s the same in every role—herself. Her impressions aren’t that great—she doesn’t actually transform into the character but just adds a few tweaks and quirks to her own persona and then boom—she’s Hillary, etc.

I like John Cameron Mitchell as well but I’m doubt I’ll be watching because I feel like this is too late and too much exposure for the aTiger King drama. Let’s move on to more creative stuff….

by Anonymousreply 11March 3, 2022 4:21 PM

R11 Except when she does Rudy Giuliani. What the hell is she doing with the claw-hands and that weird voice?

by Anonymousreply 12March 3, 2022 4:43 PM

R8 Yes. Messing would have been vastly better ( as would have a number of other comedic actresses) but it seems a rule was passed in Hollywood about 10 years ago that Kidman must be cast in *everything*, regardless of her suitability.

by Anonymousreply 13March 3, 2022 6:44 PM

R13

"Coming this Fall: The critics savaged us...the Academy booed us...the NAACP mailed us letter bombs...but this Columbus Day, prepare yourselves: Nicole Kidman stars in "Coretta: A Wife, A Life."

by Anonymousreply 14March 4, 2022 1:24 PM

[quote]Messing wanted to play Lucy not for money or award potential, but to repay some of that debt to Lucy and make sure the story was told with the right heart.

MARY!

by Anonymousreply 15March 4, 2022 1:52 PM

This is so pointless.

As the second season of Tiger King proved, we have all moved on.

by Anonymousreply 16March 4, 2022 1:55 PM

I can not stand Kate Mckinnon. She is such a ham. And she goes on and on and on with her skits

by Anonymousreply 17March 4, 2022 1:57 PM

Kate has no talent. There was no need for a movie when the documentary is enough on its own.

by Anonymousreply 18March 4, 2022 1:58 PM

This looks terrible. It should have been a drama, not a Dumb&Dumber type of comedy.

by Anonymousreply 19March 4, 2022 2:04 PM

R16 There's a second season?

by Anonymousreply 20March 4, 2022 2:06 PM

R20 Yes, but it bombed.

by Anonymousreply 21March 4, 2022 3:36 PM

JCM is brilliant casting. Kate McKinnon is all wrong and the role should have been played by a hard/soft Southern blonde.

Renee Zellweger would have smashed it.

by Anonymousreply 22March 5, 2022 10:23 AM

It’s soooo bad. Well, I take that back. JCM is great and so was his backstory. Kate is terrible. It’s a really weird performance and doesn’t seem anything like the real Baskin.

by Anonymousreply 23March 5, 2022 10:43 AM

I don't like Kate M and she isn't right for the role but the guy who's playing Joe is dead on, it's kind of creepy how perfect he is in the role.

by Anonymousreply 24March 6, 2022 10:25 PM

R5 Studios ignore the uber talented mad tv ladies in favor of snl actors. This has been going on for years.

by Anonymousreply 25March 7, 2022 12:52 AM

R25 Bobby Lee spoke about that and how MADTV people are mostly blacklisted in Hollywood

by Anonymousreply 26March 7, 2022 12:55 AM

The CGI animals are very distracting.

by Anonymousreply 27March 7, 2022 12:56 AM

Not being cast does not mean you're blacklisted.

by Anonymousreply 28March 7, 2022 2:03 AM

John Cameron mitchell deserves so much better than this.

Ugh. Looks awful

by Anonymousreply 29March 7, 2022 2:06 AM

R26 Why are they blacklisted?

by Anonymousreply 30March 7, 2022 2:11 AM

ACtually, the second season of Tiger King wasn't as much about him as the other people in the story. Best of all was the search for what happened to Baskin's husband. Fascinating.

by Anonymousreply 31March 7, 2022 2:23 AM

If it makes out like baskin is innocent in the disappearance, I’m boycotting it. The Lewis family believe she is involved and that’s enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 32March 7, 2022 2:27 AM

This came out too late, everybody is over it now.

by Anonymousreply 33March 7, 2022 2:37 AM

Any hot threesome scenes?

by Anonymousreply 34March 7, 2022 3:47 AM

No sex at all. A lesbian gets her arm eaten off though.

by Anonymousreply 35March 7, 2022 8:01 AM

I love all of this bitching about Kate McKinnon not being an actor. MEANWHILE, the person she's playing is SO FULL of charisma, charm, and emotion. PLEASE. Baskin is barely sentient.

This role doesn't require 15 years of Shakespeare in the Park. You people bitch about ANYTHING.

by Anonymousreply 36March 7, 2022 12:12 PM

It looks terrible. I can't wait!

by Anonymousreply 37March 7, 2022 12:25 PM

John Cameron Mitchell was born to play Joe, although he humanised him a bit too much. The real Joe is a piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 38March 7, 2022 12:56 PM

[Quote] Back when I used to read the old L Chat threads on McKinnon, most of her fangirls were never happy when she played straight women in movies or TV shows or had to do press with male co-stars.

They're like that with every actress who is bi/lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 39March 7, 2022 2:39 PM

Every chewed over and covered ad nauseam scandal is getting turned into a limited series. With no new insight whatsoever. Enough already.

by Anonymousreply 40March 7, 2022 2:56 PM

I agree—I watched the first episode and thought “but why should we care? We already know everything about these people and how it turns out.” Mitchell is good and McKinnon is weird in the role, but this is too little too late. If we hadn’t had an extensive documentary series about the same people and their lives, I think this would land a bit better. Too much exposure.

by Anonymousreply 41March 7, 2022 5:16 PM

I don’t recall this being the working title, dud it change?

by Anonymousreply 42March 7, 2022 5:21 PM

[quote] John Cameron Mitchell was born to play Joe, although he humanised him a bit too much. The real Joe is a piece of shit.

I agree, he was humanized too much. That's an issue with some of these mini-series about shitty people like Joe Exotic, Anna Delvey, and Elizabeth Holmes. They are humanized.

by Anonymousreply 43March 7, 2022 10:45 PM

R40 That made me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 44March 8, 2022 3:58 AM

Sam Keeley made white trash seem almost fuckable!

by Anonymousreply 45March 8, 2022 4:14 AM

Wow, she looks better as this trashy American dragon lady than she does as herself.

Weird

by Anonymousreply 46March 8, 2022 5:21 AM

Is it true that McKinnons fan girls in L chat hate Heidi Gardner? I thought someone mentioned that here once.

by Anonymousreply 47March 8, 2022 7:50 AM

R43 I haven't finished it BUT from the first two episodes, it's pretty clear that Joe IS a piece of shit. I don't get the humanizing criticism. Being manipulative does require layers and nuance. I mean...you can't get all of those supporters by JUST being garbage.

BTW, Sam Keeley is do FUCKING hot. I first noticed him in "Kin"

by Anonymousreply 48March 8, 2022 11:14 AM

R47 That was true from what I saw years on ago on the original L Chat site that had Kate and SNL threads. The Kate fangirls were unhappy that Gardner got a lot of screentime during her first season and the seasons after that. The Kate fangirls targeted a lot of hate on Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Colin Jost, and Mikey Day. There were some posters who hated Cecily Strong and others who seemed ok with her. It was pretty much a common practice on the Kate thread for Cecily Strong's weight to be made fun of constantly and posters were fine with it. However, if someone made fun of Aidy Bryant and Kenan Thompson, all hell would break loose. and the posters would be trashed for fat shaming Aidy and Kenan. It was also common practice of the fangirls to make fun of Heidi Gardner and Melissa Villasenor for being average looking women. Yet, Kate and Aidy were off limits from criticism.

Another hilarious thing I remember about Kate's idiot fangirls is they weren't happy when Alec Baldwin started playing Trump on SNL in 2016. During the goodnight montage of an SNL show, Kate and Alec were shown on camera high fiving and hugging. The fangirls on L Chat didn't like that. One person posted something about how Alec is a toad and that "he lucked out by getting the chance to work with women like Kate and Tina Fey". I cracked up laughing after reading that stupid shit. I have always disliked Alec as a person and hate him more after what happened on the Rust set. But, it was hilarious that an idiot Kate fangirl posted in 2016 about "Alec lucking out by working with Kate and Tina Fey" The person basically ignored the fact that Alec had been in the entertainment industry longer than Kate and Tina. Say what you will about Alec Baldwin, at least he had some decent performances in some of the movies he did unlike Kate hamming it up in movies and TV shows she has done outside SNL.

After L Chat was moved around and posters were unhappy with the changes, I stopped following the Kate fangirls even though they were a source of entertainment with their over the top fangirling of Kate. These days, I'm betting the over the top fangirls probably hate Chloe Fineman like they do with Heidi and I'm sure the fangirls were happy when Beck left SNL.

by Anonymousreply 49March 8, 2022 1:44 PM

R49 Whoever these vicious cunts are, they sound like awful human beings. I'm glad I'll never have to date/fuck/marry one of them.

by Anonymousreply 50March 8, 2022 3:24 PM

R49 that's funny that they hated the other cast members so much. I had heard on DL that they loathed Gardner but didn't realize they disliked so many others. It's pretty absurd given how much screentime their queen Kate gets. I mean it's not like she's being shuffled off into a corner while the other stars shine.

by Anonymousreply 51March 8, 2022 11:17 PM

R51 There was short period of time around 2015 when Kate's fangirls didn't have that thread as a weird shit show. They would occasionally bitch about cast members like Beck and Kyle getting screen time. It wasn't major back then. Their dislike for various cast members seemed to ramp up after Alex and Mikey became cast members and then increased the next year when Heidi was cast. It came down to the fangirls not being happy with other cast members minus Aidy and Kenan being given screen time.

by Anonymousreply 52March 9, 2022 3:06 AM

When is this coming out?

by Anonymousreply 53March 9, 2022 6:15 AM

"Messing wanted to play Lucy not for money or award potential, but to repay some of that debt to Lucy and make sure the story was told with the right heart."

Listen, hon. Let me tell you about that cunt Deb Messing.

Hand me a ciggie first. This is going to take a while...

by Anonymousreply 54March 9, 2022 8:12 AM

[Quote] After L Chat was moved around and posters were unhappy with the changes, I stopped following the Kate fangirls even though they were a source of entertainment with their over the top fangirling of Kate.

It's funny that there are two sites and you're not allowed to talk about it on either of them. Also the differences in which ones get traction and how you can get away with talking about straight actresses.
