Tasteful Friends - Let's Talk About Wallpaper

Does anyone still use wallpaper? Or mirrored walls for that matter?

Wallpaper is back in.

I don’t know if it reflects something that is really going on in the UK, but watch the show Hollyoaks, it has some of the ugliest contemporary wallpaper I have ever seen in my life, so much so it makes my eyes cringe. And who ever dresses that set does not go by the idea that each family would have its own style, it’s like the whole town only has one interior designer and they all use them.

There's some really fun wallpaper for kids' rooms out there.

Well, I like it. If someone's doing wallpaper now, it's usually very bold and not the entire room.

Wallpaper is very much back in style and I love it!

OP, I don’t have any wallpaper, but I’m going to get some. My favorite is grasscloth, loooove the texture, and I love layering pictures and art over that gorgeous texture.

Another concept that I love is an actual wallpaper that is a scenic/landscape mural, usually 4 - 6 panels wide. That is a very old school look, but it is being completely deconstructed and redefined by contemporary designers. While I would never do this, some people “test drive” how wallpaper will feel in a room by putting up vinyl wallpaper. I’m too snobby to do vinyl, but I can see the value in trying it in a room for a couple of weeks. Then if I love it, perhaps I would look for something similar in a high-end wallpaper.

I can’t find the seller from Etsy who was offering multi-panel antique European silk wall panels. I am not in love with this example, but it at least shows you what I’m talking about.

Mirrored like this? An old family member of mine still had smoky mirrored walls in her house when she died a few years ago.

Or this textured-woven wallpaper I saw in a house for sale.

Not a fan of wallpaper. We had velvet wallpaper growing up in the 80's. I hated it back then.

This is some of the best use of wallpaper I’ve seen in quite awhile.

This is an interesting historic overview of wallpaper in the Untied States.

My soul YEARNS to someday live somewhere that has at least one area that something grand like these would be appropriate.

I was firmly anti-wallpaper for many years. Now, I’m reconsidering.

Did someone mention wallpaper?

It can be lethal.

We used to call The Umbrellas of Cherbourg "the wallpaper movie". EVERY scene has the most outrageous wallpaper. Every. Scene.

I don't have it. When I was a kid my grandmother hated the wallpaper that was in her living room and dining room. It looked similiar to the stuff on the walls of the Castorini home. She nagged my grandfather enough to change it to something better.

We did wallpaper in our entryway. We really love it.

The best wallpaper I've ever seen was in a tiny guest bathroom off the main living room in an old-world 1929 mansion. It had been recently done and it was incredible. A small room with just a toilet and sink. White with chrome fixtures. The wallpaper was tiny, smooth glass beads on a pale, silvered backing. It was on the walls and ceiling. It might sound tacky, but in this case, was gorgeous. The shimmer was a real WOW. If it were any bigger, it wouldn't have worked. But that jewel box size was amazing. I later looked up the paper and it was, not surprising, very, very expensive.

It beat the ubiquitous gray paint.

R7- Thank you for the P. Jeffries link! Drooling over their catalogues now!

by Anonymousreply 24March 12, 2022 3:18 AM

R21-I bet that is stunning in a entryway- thanks for the inspo!

by Anonymousreply 25March 12, 2022 3:19 AM

R9- I love that on a accent wall!

by Anonymousreply 26March 12, 2022 3:22 AM

I think it depends on the architecture of the house.
