What if they bring back the draft ?

I don't look good in green.

Too old

by Anonymousreply 1March 2, 2022 12:07 AM

Most DLers are too old, even by Ukrainian standards.

I don't think it would be the worst thing (unless of course there is a war.)

Given the state of the US today and how siloed so many people's lives are, a year of national service for men and women at age 18 could be a great thing as it would force people to be exposed to, live with, and hopefully better understand people with very different backgrounds. This was something that was talked about a lot post-WW2, that it drew Americans from all over the country together (all those movies with the Brooklyn kid, the Southerner, the midwestern farm boy, the college kid, etc.)

In Israel, Switzerland and other places, mandatory military service helps cement a national identity and brings people from different social classes and backgrounds together and the US could use some of that right now.

R2“ Most DLers are too old, even by Ukrainian standards”

by Anonymousreply 4March 2, 2022 12:22 AM

I wish they would, with other "draft" options like the Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc. It would serve to unify the country and give the younger generations a common belief system which we currently sorely lack. Plus it would expose people to other citizens from all states in the U.S. and all walks of life and could serve as a social equalizer.

We really desperately need something to unify our citizenry -- maybe the draft would help.

by Anonymousreply 5March 2, 2022 12:27 AM

They do not draft the 75 yr plus crowd.

by Anonymousreply 6March 2, 2022 12:28 AM

Draft age is 18 through 25. Most will fail drug screening.

by Anonymousreply 7March 2, 2022 12:40 AM

A lot of the programs instituted by the New Deal to build infrastructure like the CCC in the US required men to work together, and as a result, were better prepared to fight together in WW2.

In the Volksturm you can wear your own clothes. Caftans may not be permitted, though.

If you are of draft age and are one of those mocking the elders, the joke is on you.

by Anonymousreply 10March 2, 2022 2:46 AM

"In Israel, Switzerland and other places, mandatory military service helps cement a national identity"

Oh, my sides, R2! Switzerland hasn't been involved in a war in the last century! Why, exactly, would good ol' neutral Switzerland need mandatory military service?

by Anonymousreply 11March 2, 2022 3:15 AM

I know several young men and women who might get a lot out of a few years in the military. If they survive of course.

by Anonymousreply 12March 2, 2022 4:15 AM

Would YOU have gotten a lot out of a few years in the military if you were still young, R12?

by Anonymousreply 13March 2, 2022 10:36 AM

I'm against bringing back the draft. It was around when I was young and I was so glad so I wouldn't want to inflict it on todays youngsters.

R13 Definitely. My partner is a wartime veteran of two tours in the Middle East. He's a much better man than I am.

Hunty, R17, I never said the Swiss didn't have armed forces. I said it never uses them because it's always safe and neutral.

by Anonymousreply 18March 2, 2022 12:57 PM

I hope so. Men and women. Send them over. Maybe that'll calm down their MAGAt parents

by Anonymousreply 19March 2, 2022 12:58 PM

Don’t forget trans! It would be discrimination to leave them out!

by Anonymousreply 20March 2, 2022 1:08 PM

In my youth my two greatest fears were the draft and killer bees.

by Anonymousreply 21March 2, 2022 2:08 PM

Most would become shell shocked from the realisation there’s a world outside their instagram and TikTok bubble.

by Anonymousreply 22March 2, 2022 7:30 PM

These days, if you show up in your caftan and "cha cha heels", they'll put you as a priority conscript!

by Anonymousreply 23March 2, 2022 10:00 PM

"It would serve to unify the country and give the younger generations a common belief system which we currently sorely lack."

When did we ever have a common belief system? America has always been a diverse country. You sound less like a lesbian and more like a homophobic conservative. They want to pretend everyone is the same

by Anonymousreply 24March 2, 2022 10:04 PM

You can always personalize your outfit with a cute Hermes scarf or Prada combat boots instead of the ones that are issued to you.

by Anonymousreply 25March 2, 2022 10:04 PM

[quote]What if they bring back the draft ?

I wish they would. That's the only way republicans will learn that war is bad.

Women, men, log cabin repugs, trans, rich, poor, college students, moms , dads, grandmas, grandpas, you name it, everybody between the ages of 18 and 40 should get drafted.

Yeah Murica !! Fight for our freedom. Go fight China and Iran.

by Anonymousreply 26March 2, 2022 10:07 PM

My cousin’s 19 year old son is in the Air Force. She said that he is getting nice steak dinners and premium meals, because they’re sending his unit to Romania. It makes me sick to my stomach. He is a fucking child. They sell poor kids in high school on a ‘free education’ and send them to slaughter.

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and insure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

That's what I'm talking about, R24. A common belief system. Or are we so far gone that we believe that only conservatives should believe in and hope for the promises contained in the Preamble to the Constitution?

And in case you're just a pup, I need to inform you that I was out not only in high school in the 70s, but I was marching in the streets for your gay (as well as women's) rights then as well. And having been out my whole life, I've paid the price many, many times, including (but not limited to) an early discharge from the Army back in the day.

But you can call me whatever you like -- as long as you remember to thank me for the sacrifices I made so you could have the rights you enjoy as a gay person today.

by Anonymousreply 40March 3, 2022 10:51 AM

The war monger Republicans would do it.

by Anonymousreply 41March 3, 2022 10:51 AM

^ Except they would just draft brown people

by Anonymousreply 42March 3, 2022 10:53 AM

The tough DLers would be lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 43March 3, 2022 10:57 AM

1. The military does not want the draft. It is too cumbersome and costly in today's world.

2. As mentioned, most people would not qualify, between drug tests and tattoos (the ban on tattoos may no longer exist.)

A non-military national service scheme would be good for the USA, however.

by Anonymousreply 44March 3, 2022 10:57 AM

We need a war and a draft to finally whip this generation of pussies back into shape. They have no world perspective. It would finally destroy this woke crap and need for safe spaces.

Americans 18-25 drafted for the military nowadays would be like those poor, dumb Russian boys--only fatter.

Can Demi Lovato be drafted now that she’s a they instead of a she? That frozen yogurt that traumatized her is nothing compared to what she’s gonna see in combat.

I have it on good authority that The Cabbage Patch Parents will be in charge of the Montecito intake centre. A five dollar donation to Archewell is required when signing up for the Armed Forces. However, if you are of caucasian descent the donation will be ten dollars. There will be an avocado toast and oatmeal vegan latte breakfast served between 0900 - 1100 Monday - Friday.

by Anonymousreply 53March 4, 2022 10:38 AM

what if your pussy had a full set of teeth? can you imagine?

by Anonymousreply 54March 4, 2022 11:02 AM

Two years of national duty from people aged 18 to 20 is a good idea. It could be served doing volunteer work, in the military service, in hospitals etc. As bad as the draft was, it united the country since men of all classes were drafted. It fell apart because of an unpopular war but a peacetime draft has many advantages. It teaches people you have responsibilities along with rights.

by Anonymousreply 55March 4, 2022 11:07 AM

Were university students exempted, R55? So much for 'men of all classes'.
