Masquerade (1988) film

the only thing that would have made it better is if Rob Lowe and Doug Savant had been gay lovers

Rob Lowe's bare ass.

Everyone was so young and gorgeous. Then the Lowe sex scandal ruined his career, MIA for almost the entire decade of the 90s. Doug Savant went to TV soaps. Meg Tilly faded and retired.

Funny how Kim Cattrall has had the most successful career.

I was not at all interested in Rob Lowe in this movie. He looked to me like he always does: like a dull J.C. Penney's catalogue model.

But Douglas Savant in tightie-whites was masturbation materials for weeks afterwards.

I think they were former lovers, their body language was very intimate

by Anonymousreply 4March 1, 2022 1:55 AM

Kim Cattrall was incredibly beautiful in this film

I always thought Meg Tilly was an interesting choice to play Olivia

Was their kiss left on the cutting room floor?

^^^ He looked better on Desperate Housewives when they put him in a thong

I love this movie. It's aged much better than I thought it would.

I remember dragging my parents to see this when I was 12 because I knew Rob was going to be naked in it. Everybody looked great naked. Rob had a fabulous ass, Kim had great tits and Doug looked hot prancing around in his tighty-whities. And John Glover was terrific as Meg Tilly's nasty stepfather.

She was purty.

In big 80's stood next to him waiting for valet in Westwood. Surprised how delicate and frail he looked. Twink du jour.

I think that the past romance was implied. I'm guessing they didn't explicitly say they were lovers once b/c it was the 80s.

Watching this on Amazon Prime right now. I am loving every second of this shit. Meg Tilly as a Hamptons heiress? Rob Lowe? Kim Cattrall? 1988? This is peak cinema.

R12 Are you Melania Trump?

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2025 6:45 AM

Meg Tilly and Phoebe Cates were always cast as wasps despite being part-Asian and looking like it.

This is a surprisingly good film! Quite gripping. Meg Tilly is very sympathetic as the heroine, so you care what’s going to happen.

She has a quirky “Tea Time” YouTube series. Here at the 10:00 mark she describes how the Hamptons mansion they filmed in was haunted.

You say quirky, I say spectrum-y

I seem to remember Pauline Kael liked the movie. More or less.

The movies before the sex scandal (in 1988) were: The Outsiders (Sodapop Curtis), Class (Franklin 'Skip' Burroughs IV), The Hotel New Hampshire (John Berry), Oxford Blues (Nick De Angelo), St. Elmo's Fire (Billy Hicks), Youngblood (Dean Youngblood), About Last Night (Danny Martin), Square Dance (Rory Torrance), Masquerade (Tim Whalen), Illegally Yours (Richard Dice).

The scandal definitely put a dent in his movie career, but it was not exactly a brilliant career. The first three roles were supporting, St. Elmo's was ensemble, Oxford Blues and Youngblood were okay but formulaic, and not big, expensive movies. Square Dance, he played a mentally challenged young guy. About Last Night was probably the best thing he did in that early phase. But he was not breaking out and becoming a major star like Tom Cruise.

He also was in a play at the Williamstown (MA) Theater Festival in 1987, Chekhov's The Three Sisters (with an all-star cast including Amy Irving, Christopher Walken, John Heard, Stephen Collins, Kate Burton, Anne Pitoniak).

I saw this a few times when it was released, and revisit it every few years. Perfect rainy afternoon viewing.

Doug Savant’s tightie whites looked like a giant diaper.
