Who is going to see this? I'm Batman.
I'll see it, but I'm not going opening weekend.
Seems like a good weekend to see Death on the Nile.

No.
I may watch bits off it on Tv wen channel-surfing but I know I'll be confused—
1. because everything is almost in 90% blackness in these kinds of kids movies.
2. I'm sure it looks he same as all the other ten Batman which have been foisted on us in the last twelve years.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 28, 2022 11:05 PM |
He may be a decent enough actor (now), but I've never found him appealing.
Plus, all the stories about how infrequently he bathes, washes his hair, and brushes his teeth are revolting.

Three hours of an ultra dark Batman movie. Pass.
I'll watch it on a streaming service at some point. Likely will take multiple sessions for me to get through.

The screen is 90% black. And the actors mutter in a threateningly low growl which they think is masculine and sexy.

I wouldn't go to the theater but I'll watch it when it comes to HBO MAX. I find Patterson attractive on screen, I just wouldn't in person since he is apparently very nasty. Also, those Batman suits make you sweat, so I feel very sorry for the wardrobe people that worked on this film.

Please. A retread of a retread of retreads of sequels to Tim Burton's "reconception"?
I don't need a "batman" in my life anymore.
Why?
BECAUSE IT'S THE SAME OLD SHIT.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 28, 2022 11:34 PM |
R7 It isn't as bad as Spiderman. It seems like every time they get a new one they have to remake the origin story, which is basically the same fucking story over and over. At least with the Batman ones they switch it up.

R11 I haven't watched Shazam, have you? I only ask because the main things that seem to be missing from DC for most of this century is humor and color, and it looks like it might have had some of both.
I like for superhero movies to be live-action over the top cartoons. Not dark and depressing.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 28, 2022 11:57 PM |
I might take a gamble and see this movie (not on opening weekend).
Never cared for Pattinson's Twilight acting but then he did The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe and the Claire Denis sci-fi film High Life and I was won over.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 28, 2022 11:57 PM |
R11 that's what's so frustrating. The producers behind the DCEU had a goldmine in recognizable characters to create something consistent like Marvel but they've blundered it every step of the way. I'm just not interested in another Batman reboot like the others have stated.

Oh that's right. Shazam is a DC property. I keep forgetting that. He was a Fawcett creation originally and in my mind, Shazam doesn't fit in with the other DC characters.
So, I have to take my earlier statement back. I did see Shazam and did enjoy it a lot. I felt like it was very true to the original spirit of the comic book.
So, of the DCEU movies of the past 15 wears, I liked Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 and Shazam.

R14. That's because the people running DC's cinematic universe have probably never read the comic books or even seen the DCAU. They only know Batman, Superman and WW and bank on them to make them their millions.
There are countless interesting DC characters they could use and those three are overexposed. That's kind of why many people liked Shazam (though I wasn't a fan).
I know Aquaman was a thing too and I'm glad they allowed Jason to take on that role - it was a ride but not really a good movie.
They should do Zatanna. Everyone loves magic.

It used to be, when a super-hero movie opened, it was such a rare occurrence that it was considered an event. Much like when new Star Wars movies opened.
Now, there are so many super-hero movies opening each year, there's really nothing special about them at all. We can thank Marvel for over-saturating the market with super-hero movies. Much like Star Wars movies.
But I will also give Marvel credit for being true to the characters with their movie versions. And for making entertaining movies. DC doesn't seem to be capable of doing either.

Yes, sadly Star Wars has become far too oversaturated. I like the franchise but it doesn't need a multimedia campaign to have us thinking about it 24/7. It's not that interesting.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 2, 2022 11:11 PM |
R38 But, not as films.
Batman first came to the screen as live action serials that were primarily meant for children watching the Saturday matinee.
Then in the 1960s they made a campy tv show and a film based on it.
In 1989, he was brought back as serious yet fun Batman for two films, then back to campy for two films, and now they have done 10 films with the character that are all dark, brooding, with no sense of humor or color.
Superhero films were fun, when they were occasional and the superheroes actually acted super. Back when they were inspirational and taught us to strive to be better. Now they might have gadgets and/or powers but they all act like they need a Zoloft prescription. Which ends up making the villains the characters we actually care about, which isn't great for society.

Batman has had several mature storylines, not to mention some of the shady stuff that happens to the Bat Family in general - Barbara Gordon being the obvious one.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 2, 2022 11:49 PM |
R42 There is a difference between dark and brooding and depressing. Also the 1960s show's version wasn't just created for the show and was pretty much a faithful adaptation of the Silver era Batman.
An essential part of Batman is that he is a fairly serious guy when he is Batman, but as Bruce Wayne he is supposed to be a playboy bachelor, that no one would ever suspect. It is the same basic plot as The Scarlett Pimpernel and Zorro. But, they never play him that way anymore. When I watch the Bruce Wayne scenes in most of the recent films I'm like clearly he is Batman, unless I just accept that the people of Gotham are all extremely thick.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 2, 2022 11:57 PM |
Frank Miller's The Dark Knight (the comic, not the Nolan film) is some of the darkest shit, as dark as Seven or LA Confidential. DC Animated did two films which were excellent.

Honestly, that's your own issue. Bale did a helluva job as Bruce Wayne. Also, in today's world a "playboy bachelor" would be fucking ridiculous. Things change with the times. Clark Kent is no longer a bumbling idiot, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 2, 2022 11:59 PM |
I do agree with R49 that recent iterations have lost some of the original concepts of Batman, probably because of Nolan's influence.
I actually disliked Nolan's interpretation. He largely did away with the "world's greatest detective" part and the playboy part in favor of martial arts and standing on top of buildings.
The animation(s) did a much better job of capturing those concepts.
Also R50, you've clearly never seen the Iron Man movies because "playboy" is literally Tony Stark's concept and I don't think people found it ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 3, 2022 12:01 AM |
Tony Stark was a business man an irresponsible, he wasn't some lecherous asshole in a bathrobe being a total womanizer like he's Hugh Hefner. That shit would be cancelled in two seconds today.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 3, 2022 12:07 AM |
R52. There's a world of difference between being a wealthy charmer and a lecherous Hugh Hefner type. They've just pushed his playboy concept too far to the corner where it's now merely a cover for his Batman identity (which is essentially at this point his whole identity).
Bruce Wayne was also supposed to be a person, not just a convenient guise so people didn't think he was fucking insane when he went to the supermarket.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 3, 2022 12:08 AM |

You can be a playboy without being Playboy. When I think of playboys on screen I think of Cary Grant or Dean Martin, not Hugh Hefner. It isn't about sex so much as just being cool and smooth.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 3, 2022 12:21 AM |
R59. He doesn't have to be happy-go-lucky but isn't being the Batman meant to be somewhat of a coping mechanism for his grief? Being morose 24/7 seems to suggest he should be in therapy, not fighting crime.
Besides, I'm not sure tortured sells that well anyway. Look at Marvel, it's plastered with chipper people who largely shrug off the horrific circumstances they often find themselves in and they're doing very well.
That said, I'm kind of intrigued by this movie if only because I like the Riddler and I'm hoping this one has more of a detective vibe.

R69. I absolutely agree that his demons drive him but he's not fundamentally a truly damaged character. He's not the Punisher. He doesn't kill, he doesn't use guns, because ultimately he is a (relatively) idealistic character in a city sinking into crime and depravity.
Seeing Batman in Justice League using guns really surprised me to be honest. It's a departure from the Batman I loved growing up.

What I think is a shame is that they've decided to remove Grayson/Robin from the Batman movies ever since Clooney's fiasco. Say what you will about Robin's character across incarnations, the bond Batman forges over their mutual grief speaks more to Batman's struggles than punching the Joker 100 times. It's healthier too.

by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 3, 2022 3:42 PM |
Of all the Batman movies that have come out since 1989, my favorite was Batman Forever. It brought a lighter touch than the Tim Burton movies and didn't take itself quite so seriously. Val Kilmer was quite good in the role.
My next favorite would be 2005's Batman Begins. Yes, it was much darker in tone, but was very true to the character and his origins. Christian Bale take on Batman was a nice departure from previous versions.
However, I disliked the subsequent Nolan Batman movies because they just kept getting darker and more bloated.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 3, 2022 4:37 PM |
Just got back from seeing it.
It is not like any other Batman movie and I was surprised I like Pattinson. At first, it played like a horror film but then turned into a first rate crime drama and it was nice seeing Batman actually be a detective for once.
Riddler was a lil over the top and after awhile I did get antsy in my seat (3:15 min with previews) but overall I give it an A-/A.
The Batmobile and the score were amazing!

R90, he was great and had some funny moments. Especially when Gordon & Batman left him tied up and he had to waddle like a penguin.
Personally, a lil less of Riddler might have been better. He was real fuckin' scary at the beginning of the film but the more he talked, the more over-the-top he went and it killed his menace.
Catwoman was pretty good. No Pfeiffer but worlds better than Halle or AnnE.
You could barely see Joker but definitely better than Leto. He looked to be disfigured.

But which Batman are you?
The morbid one or the campy one.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | March 4, 2022 7:09 AM |
I don't usually ever have morbid thoughts like this, but I can't shake the feeling someone's going to shoot up a theater this weekend. I think this teapot of a world we've been dealing with - Covid, nuclear war back in the news, 01/06, Trump, Megan Markle - is about to boil the fuck over. There are some EXTREMELY angry people out there who feel backed in a corner and they can't afford their bills & pills anymore. I can picture a Dark Night Returns Aurora CO copycat, just a feeling. Sit near the Exit door and wear running shoes.
Anyhoot, have a great time fellas :)

I want more details about his diet. I love hearing about the extreme diet regimes- like Bale, Mcconaughey, etc. Didn't think one was necessary for Batman considering the batsuit and editing these days but I admire his dedication to hs craft.

I thought it was just the Flash and Batgirl movies? I wish WB would hurry up and announce who is playing Nightwing.

I saw this last night and I loved it. It reminds me of an otherworldly film Noir. Its not pretty or happy in anyway, which may reflect my moods lately, but it is very good. Colin farell is fucking fantastic as Penguin. Robert Pattinson though, is exactly how a film noir Batman would be. He's great in this.

R102. That's really sad, I haven't seen it yet and I was hoping a detective angle would give them a reason to have Bruce out of the suit more often.
He doesn't have to do all his detective work as the Batman. He can still talk to people and victims as well as visit places outside the suit.

Just got back from seeing it.
I love how all of you shit on this movie without seeing it.
As mentioned above, it was cool to see a Batman be a detective for a change. Colin Ferrel was great. The actor who played the Riddler was great. Pattison was great as Batman, ok as Bruce Wayne (though Wayne was in very little of the movie).
Kravtiz wasn't bad but kind of meh.
The movie was surprisingly dark (and not the lighting). Especially the ending. If you had to say if Batman won or lost ... he kind of lost.

I actually liked some of the Snyderverse— for instance, I like that Zack Snyder doesn’t play it safe with casting and I do like the dark and grimy underworld vibe he was going for. However, I think he puts aesthetic sensibility over character sometimes.
I understand why Snyder fans don’t like Gunn’s aesthetic or his Troma sensibilities, and while I definitely preferred David Ayer’s aesthetic in the Suicide Squad, I like Gunn’s character driven approach better.
The first Suicide Squad is the DC movie I wanted to see in its full cut— it had a lot of mistakes, like a terrible villain and not taking a hard enough stance on why what happened to Harley Quinn is a tragedy, but you can see the bones of an interesting movie

Marvel was at its peak when the Marvel fans and DC fans were at each other’s throats. Marvel is now entering a phase without its 2 biggest stars, Iron Man and Captain America, so they are about more vulnerable. Ideally both studios would be at their best, because then the fans win.
Marvel has had a few not so good movies: The Thor films (Ragnarok is technically not a bad movie, but that’s not Thor. They stripped the character of his regality and its clear they don’t know what they want to do with the character so they just have Chris H playing himself) and the Eternals. It seems like they completely changed some things about Kamala Khan in the MCU which I’m sure won’t go over well

I saw the film and, honestly, I have to agree with others is more of the same I've seen before. There are too many reboots of these films and I'm frankly sick of it. I did like Zoe's Catwoman, second to Michelle Pfeiffer's. The plot was contrived, though, and I didn't feel any anxiety towards it where I would want the protagonist to resolve the threat.

by Anonymous | reply 176 | March 20, 2022 8:29 PM |
The movie was good. I’m not sold on him as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but I’ll give him another shot. He’s supposed to be baby Batman in this one, fine, but he is not Bruce Wayne. Hopefully he’ll improve in the sequel.
Michael Keaton is the best Bruce Wayne AND Batman. Others have tried, but they’ve all failed at being excellent as both.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | March 20, 2022 8:35 PM |
I prefer Christian Bale. He had the dark energy and hauntedness that was perfect for the character. The Michael Douglas Batman films look dated now.

Saw it at the weekend and, although 3 hours ours long, not actually that bad. It's a detective story at its heart so you want to know how it's solved. Kravitz comes out best, I think.

It's almost always the case than an actor can nail either Bruce Wayne or Batman, but not both.

I finally finished this last night and I must say that it got better towards the end. So I think the movie would've been MUCH better if they'd cut out the Falcone shit and focused on Riddler and the Penguin. It def would've been shorter. Pattinson was terrible. He just doesn't have the gravitas. His performance was stilted and amateurish at best. I felt like he was in a high school play. He looked uncomfortable and constricted in the costume.
There was no need for Selina Kyle. No build-up of how her character became "Catwoman". Just BAM. A cocktail waitress that knows kung fu. Paul Dano was embarrassingly cliche in his performance, but I can't really blame him. I mean...how many ways can an actor play a psychopath without the performance coming off contrived. Keogh was unimpressive as the Joker. I mean...that laugh? Pattinson just had NO nuisance here. He's WAYYY over his head in this. His Bruce Wayne comes across as autistic INSTEAD of the dark, PTSD-suffering guy whose parents were murdered. And the hairstyle? Geoffrey Rush was wasted as Commissioner Gordon. The only person that's really great in this is Collin Farrell as the Penguin. He was entertaining as FUCK. You just forget that he's a good actor, y'know?
Also? How the FUCK did the Riddler figure out Batman's identity?
I can't figure it out. I'm a comic book guy BUT most of these movies are so bad, I can barely make it through them.

by Anonymous | reply 187 | April 20, 2022 11:57 AM |
R183 I don’t think the Riddler did know Batman was Bruce. He started repeating ‘Bruce Wayne’ because he was upset that Bruce wasn’t killed by the letter bomb.
That’s one part I didn’t like- riddler personally killed the Mayor, put the cop in the rat trap, and put a bomb on the DA’s neck, but mails a letter bomb to Bruce Wayne? Why didn’t he go to Wayne Manor and get Bruce himself? Why the letter bomb? Lazy writing.
I thought the movie was just okay. A bit too long. Penguin was good. I never in a million years would’ve known it was Colin Farrell had I not known.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | April 20, 2022 12:15 PM |
R188 Hunh...I have to watch that again. The 15 minutes of back and forth frames of Dano and Pattinson (like a goddamn Tarantino film) gave me that impression.

I thought it was fantastic. A detective story, a procedural, first and foremost. With the superhero stuff adding fun and fantasy. I thought Pattinson was hot as shit. And he had amazing chemistry with Zoe Kravitz. Batman and Catwoman being together finally made sense to me.
This Batman wouldn't fit in the Snyderverse. It's too grounded. I loved the score too, and the use of the classic Nirvana song.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | April 21, 2022 2:21 PM |
Batman superfan here, I’d give it a B overall. The plot was needlessly convoluted and it was too long. But it was definitely the Batman-iest of all the Batman movies - felt like a straight adaptation of a graphic novel. I loved how much Pattinson was in the costume - previous films seemed to keep that at a minimum. Farrell was awesome, so was Kravitz. I wish the writing on the Riddler was a little sharper, not Dano’s fault. I did love the Riddler’s new look though. I loved the realistic look, lack of CGI, and that they leaned into the detective aspect of the character.

by Anonymous | reply 203 | April 22, 2022 2:27 AM |
I really enjoyed it. For the reasons many have pointed out - it felt very noirish and became a good crime story and that Batman stayed in costume for most of it was intriguing. Loved that scene where he wakes up from the bomb surrounded by the cops trying to pull off his mask. Really effective. Another thing I enjoyed was that it essentially opened with a Nirvana song - Nirvana! - and then they incorporated the refrain from Something In The Way into the Batman's theme. Loved that. It was long, yeah, but I was really caught up in the mystery.
Actually, the whole thing felt like a comic book movie if it were directed by David Fincher. It was like watching Seven, only the Brad Pitt character is in a bat costume. Dano felt like he was channeling Kevin Spacey's character. I mean, they even had the journals, ffs. I laughed out loud at the incels. It felt very on point to me.
