They're sassy and they don't give a damn! What the fuck happened? They're more feminist and modern than any other women I've ever seen on screen.
Why the fuck are sassy dame actresses of the precode Hollywood era so entertaining?

Nothing beats Pre-Code.

Censorship set this country back.

Joan Blondell was underrated. She lived a very hard life with boyfriends and husbands verbally and physically abusing her.

The Production Code happened to them.

They've been replaced by today's sassy dame trans actresses!

Any excuse, huh r5.

I think we think that people were all buttoned-up and stuffy back then, but they were dirty birds!
I remember seeing old HS yearbooks from the 1920s and the kids had all kinds of nicknames and memes and inside jokes and wisecracks the way they do now. It was kind of surprising.

I think people today would relate more to the films if they spoke as they did when they messed up lines.

That would be interesting to see R7.
Not sure why they wanted to sanitize everything and make it some sort of sexless utopia.

Damn! How low did Joan's breasts hang?!

When the Production Code (aka Hays Code) was enforced in the summer of 1934, acting/plots became artificial, because the Code forbade so many things, mainly things that didn't adhere to a right-wing philosophy (love of home, church, country & traditional family values). So movies couldn't be realistic. Also, the faux Mid-Atlantic accent and melodramatic accent took over for over two decades.
After the Code was abolished in 1968, freedom in American cinema reigned supreme... for about 40 years. In the past decade, a New Production Code has emerged. Only instead of being dictated by the religious right like the Hays Code, it is the woke liberals who are calling the shots and shoehorning far-left propaganda into movies.
And once again, freedom of expression is limited when extremists are in charge. The difference between the far-right and far-left running things in Hollywood is that the far-left produces mediocrity by and large, because they value mediocrity. The right believes in winners and losers and the best person for the job; the left thinks people on and off screen should be hired based on skin color/sex to make sure that every race/gender is represented. Talent doesn't matter to the extreme left. It's all about 'fairness.' Which is why they are producing shit (unlike the Hays Code period) and why people are longing for movies pre-2010 that looked and sounded like a lot of talent and work went into them.
In short, this woke period in Hollywood will be remembered as a Dark Age.

Was Ronald Reagan talented?

Joan Blondell's name is on the Gay/Bi Old Hollywood list compiled by William Dakota who wrote a Hollywood Gossip column for decades.

R12 Interesting

R12, are you fucking retarded?

About 15 years ago there was a DL thread "Let's Be Shopgirls in a 1930s Movie." It was to die for!

Interesting that in that long clip of bloopers at r8, not a single actor yells or mutters "Shit!" or "Fuck!" when they mess up their lines or business. Lots of "Goddamits!" though.
Were "Shit!" and Fuck!" considered just too obscene as swear words back then?
I also loved seeing how actors like Jimmy Cagney and Roz Russell, even in their bloopers, kept a high energy going, not wanting to lose the rhythm of the scene.

R18, there are blooper reels out there with Carole Lombard swearing. That dame had a mouth on her!

R12 That was the most intelligent post I've read on DL in a long time. Bravo.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 27, 2022 3:18 PM |
No it wasn't r21. The idea that the right, especially the far right, is magically indifferent to skin color and gender, and always just focused on the "best person for the job," is one of the stupidest misconceptions ever posted on DL.
