R20 They are quite homophobic. I have heard their theory that their amle ancestors were raped by Turks so they became homophobic. But I think it is one of their self victimizing myths.
In fact, during the war they were the ones who were committing mass rapes, so must be some sort of projection.

Moderately difficult to difficult but it's easy to pronounce and the FSI have a two volume course that you can download from the Live Lingua website for free. Plus, as an added bonus it's the same language as Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin.

I always use TravelGay because the posters seem to keep up with what's open and closed, very important in a COVID era. They also give you a good sense of the atmosphere. Sure, someone will complain about bad service or what-not, but this website has been rather accurate regarding bars, clubs, and saunas. Worst thing you can do is go to a sauna that empty and smells of mold when the hot place is across town. Or end up in a Neo-Nazi bar when you meant to gay club. That actually happened to actress Gabrielle Union while vacationing with one of her gay friends. They got chased down the street.
If you are going east you must do your research. I think this website is a pretty good starting source. Serbie sounds less than ideal for gays. Many clubs or bars have no comments so proceed with caution.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 26, 2022 6:11 PM |
Not to scare you, but some people went missing there. One Croatian guy went there on New Year party and they are still looking for him. So, careful.

But I guess, you Americans are familiar with danger and high crime rate.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 26, 2022 6:17 PM |
r41 people go missing in every single country. Can you be more specific?
I can't remember if it was Romania, Serbia, or both, but one of those countries still had swarms of homophobes using apps to get gays to meet them some place public like a train station entrance before jumping them. I'd encourage you to be cautious. Meet somewhere safe like your hotel lobby or in an Airbnb without direct street access. I had a place in Hungry that required a journey to the front door. So even if something happened I could make a run for it and they'd never reach my front door. Wasn't fool proof but the second best option after a hotel.
These countries also have loads of hot guys yearning for some action. Take the good with the bad. I've found a lot more good, along with some introspective pillow-talk after the sex was completed. I've yet to regret visiting any country, especially ones that have a bad reputation because there are good people everywhere, and horny gays all over the place.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 26, 2022 6:28 PM |
R43 Of course, lots of people go missing here in Croatia too like everywhere else. But not the tourists, or very rarely.
In Serbia sometimes the tourists go missing too, so it is a bit more dangerous. Not extremely so, but better to be careful, particularly about the hookups. They have more violent crime and yes they could lure a gullible gay guy, so it is better to meet somewhere in public to see the guy and feel the vibes. If he is gay or a thug.
I sound like my auntie now.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 26, 2022 6:42 PM |
No r44 you sound cautious and smart. I jut need some more context of what you meant by people going missing. I agreer with you, I've heard some things that made me pause before considering Serbia as a vacation spot. I did the same with Ukraine and now I regret not visiting last year.
Croatia remains on my list because I met a Croatian guy that moved her 2 years ago. Gorgeous and stole my heart. Dumped me for someone else, but I haven't been able to shake off my love of Croatian men since.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 26, 2022 6:53 PM |
R45 I don't like to spread the rumors that people spread about Serbia and Kosovo, cause they might not be true. From organ trafficking to luring gays and beat them and robe them, but I guess that happens in US too. The later happens in Bosnia too.
Croatia seems like a safe village, but you have to be careful here too. I remember the case of a girl from Mexico city who was killed by a maniac on a hill near Split. Horrible that she came from one of the most dangerous places to one of the safest places and yet had such misfortune to meet a deranged killer.

Walk the streets and parks in any Serbian city and you will easily spot at least one stray dog, and it’s not uncommon to see an entire pack. The exact number of stray dogs is difficult to obtain, but according to some estimates, there are several thousand of them.
While Belgrade has five state-sponsored and several privately-owned shelters, it is still not enough to host all the stray dogs. But authorities and activists alike agree that the main problem isn’t caring for strays but preventing dogs from becoming stray in the first place because of ‘irresponsible ownership’.

R82, at first I was semi-interested in what they're up to, but then I read that they attacked the Vucjac shelter, for totally nonexistent abuse. They reportedly provided prosecutors with totally fake videos of "abuse" at the shelter. There was a global outcry, and the founder was released after losing 25 pounds in prison. It's a whole thing. I have no idea what motivated them to do that to Vucjac.
Also, some of the guys in the gang used to be into dogfighting. I don't get it.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 16, 2022 5:24 PM |
For R82.
Gacic is the owner of the Vucjak Shelter (Vucjak means German shepherd in Serbian), Serbia's largest shelter for abandoned and stray dogs. In operation since 1997, Vucjak was founded by Gacic and his late mother, who simply started taking in abandoned dogs from the street and housing them in her home. Now the shelter has around 1,200 dogs (although Gacic isn't sure of the exact number) and has attracted international attention from animal lovers around the world.
For more than two decades, the shelter operated without incident. But then, one night in June 2021, the facility was raided by armed police in bulletproof vests and balaclavas. Video footage from the operation looks a lot like what you would expect from a bust against a major drugs cartel.
In a video released by Serbia's Interior Ministry, Gacic is held at gunpoint in his office before being pushed to the floor and handcuffed. After his arrest, Levijatan went live on Facebook and Bihali said that they had uncovered video evidence that animals were being neglected and abused at the shelter and had passed it on to police. According to Levijatan, Gacic, who was detained for 13 days, was letting the "dogs die in cannibalism, their own excrement, disease, [and] feeding themselves by eating their own offspring."
The videos obtained by Levijatan show sick and wounded dogs and the corpses of deceased ones scattered across the muddy, hilly terrain on which the shelter sits. Filmed by two of the shelter's former employees, Bihali says that the videos were sent to him out of genuine concern for animal welfare. Gacic, however, says that another employee told him that the pair who filmed the videos promised her money if she would speak out against Gacic on camera, which she refused.
While Gacic admits that sometimes dogs on his extensive property do die from fights or disease and that it can sometimes take several days to notice their wounds or remains due to their sheer numbers, he says that the scenes in the incriminating videos were selectively filmed to create a slanted image of conditions there.
Gacic says that he knows exactly why Levijatan targeted him. It's well known, he says, that his shelter receives donations from abroad -- which averaged at some $45,000 per month before the June raid -- and he believes that Levijatan's true intention was to force him out, take over the shelter, and then profit from the foreign money.
"I know that their goal was the donations, what else could it be?" an agitated Dacic says. "If they had honest intentions, they would've come down here first to ask questions: 'Hey, people, we have some information that things aren't how they should be. Could we come inside to have a look and see what's up?' Anybody can take a look around, just as you did. But nobody ever asked about the well-being of the dogs. To this day, nobody is interested in those dogs."
