You look at Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno or Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, and all of them have had work done but it has been minimal and they allowed themselves to age. I think they're the best examples of healthy aging. Sensible. You look at Barbra Streisand and Jesus Christ she looks like a cat lady.

R172, I'm a 63-year-old lesbian and I look much younger than she does. That's a hard-looking 60!!
OTOH, I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, and I walk two miles every morning. And I never had kids. So there's that.

That's what I meant by bringing up the weight gains. If some of these "terribly-aging" stars "just" took off a few pounds (eg, Locklear), they'd probably look really good. The problem is that it's not so easy when you're not in your 20s and 30s anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | February 26, 2022 5:38 PM |
You're wrong, R175. When you lost weight like that, you also lose fat in your face, which makes it hang and get more wrinkles.
Didn't you ever hear the expression, "When you get old, you're going to have to choose between your ass or your face"?

[quote]Jimmy Page, half of the original Zucchini Brothers, doesn"t look too too bad in that second pic. Being amidst younger persons helps.
That photo with a few of his children is over 3 years old. Page doesn’t look too good these days. With a tan he looks a bit healthier.
Page looked terrible at the 'Stairway to Heaven trial'. The remaining members of the California rock band Spirit and the late Randy California’s family sued Page for ripping off the beginning of their song "Taurus" for the intro to “Stairway to Heaven". Anyone with functioning ears can hear it's the same music, yet Page won the case. Amazing.
Page was probably stressed during that trial, nervous that he’d have to pay Randy's family some big bucks, but, once again, Page got away with ripping off another musician. IIRC, Page did end up paying NYC folkie Jake Holmes (who later went on to write for Streisand) for totally ripping off, "Dazed and Confused”.
While on tour with The Yardbirds, before he formed Zep, Page saw Jake perform his song "Dazed and Confused" in NYC. Once again, it proved this was not an original Zeppelin song. Jake's LP which contained the song was released before the first Zeppelin LP.
The more I hear about Page's legacy of ripping off other musicians, the more Page seems like Drumpf. Page gets away with so much, I won’t even get into the 14 year old Lori Maddox groupie situation.
The fact that Page is so dependent on ‘reworking’ others music is likely the reason why he’s never been able to get past his Zep legacy. Page might be a brilliant guitarist, however, it appears, he cannot come up with any original music. Before The Yardbirds and Zeppelin, Page honed his skills as a session musician. As part of two famous bands, Page's entire musical history has basically been about stealing and ‘re-working’ others music, from Black American bluesman, to NYC folkies to traditional British folk music.
Page blatantly ripped off the late Pentangle folk guitarist Bert Jansch’s re-working of a traditional British folk song, “Black Waterside”, Page called it “White Summer” and “Black Mountainside”. It was easily proven, Jansch’s version was out years before Page recorded this song.
Robert Plant has moved on, in his diverse solo work and with Allison Krauss. John Paul Jones is extremely talented, before Zep he was an in-demand session musician, JPJ isn’t scared of working with new and younger musicians. JPJ has worked with everyone from Diamanda Galas to Dave Grohl and Josh Homme.
Page is stagnating. Every ‘new’ release he works on is nothing more than a Led Zeppelin re-thread, these 'new' releases are basically Led Zeppelin songs remastered with some some ‘rarities’ and older live tracks added to get fans to purchase these expensive boxed sets.
Page's rabid fans don’t seem to care. Years ago, he spoke at Oxford, even his newer young fans were going nuts. In his fans eyes, he can do no wrong.
Page at the Stairway to Heaven/Taurus trial. We all get the face we deserve.

With certain types of cancer, all the money in the world won't help. A rich person's money might give them more times, but not much.
Over the last year I just lost two friends, both with great careers, lots of money and still fairly young, both had rare fatal forms of cancer.
Please, STFU.

[quote]Being rich obviously doesn't preclude one from getting sick, but being poor is an almost sure predictor for bad aging.
Factor in where a poor person lives. For example, NY state has very generous Medicaid programs.
One of my mom's elderly friends is on full Medicaid, this woman has better health insurance than my mother! Medicaid also covers this woman's monthly Medicare premium. This woman also gets a $150 OTC health-related product card, which refills automatically every month.
btw, this woman isn't exactly poor, she was simply smart enough to move her assets into a trust. Just in case she needs to go into nursing home full time, she's all set up. Secondary health insurance and Medicare only covers 100 days at a nursing home, after that, Good Luck.
Medicaid covers long term nursing home stays as well as long term at home care which includes home aides and any supplies a person might need. It's amazing how so many Americans are not prepared for their old age and the inevitable ridiculously expensive health care bills.

R286, Though often labeled the most beautiful woman in the world throughout her life and career, Elizabeth Taylor had definite imperfections.
She had short stumpy legs, a double chin, breasts too large for her size, etc.
What made her beautiful were her violet eyes, double set of natural lashes and a perfectly oval face.

As long as the body is decent which hers was in her day, the face is pretty much everything when it comes to looks and no one else's face will ever compare to hers.

Goldie Hawn seemingly doesn't care a ounce about aging, total free spirit I guess...
Kevin Sorbo? Even in his prime on Hercules, I thought "He doesn't even look like hercules! You know the usual dark hair, beard, etc and secondly, In all of Hollywood they couldn't find a more experienced actor, whose better looking, better built actor for hercules? really? REALLY?..

Disagree with this. Angelina Jolie, IMO, has a beautiful face. Her body is kind of a mystery b/c she's always underweight. IMO, she looks kind of terrible, sometimes, because of her body.

Of course, aging poorly has a lot to do with genes, whether or not the person was a smoker, druggie, and/or heavy drinker, and if they ate crappy food and didn't exercise at all, even walked.
My mom's siblings still look amazing, great genes and no alcoholism. One aunt who heavily smoked in her teens and 20s, still looks great without any kind of plastic surgery.

Redford was a sun worshipper which is kryptonite for a red heads skin. Also the later in life facelift and bad toupees just accentuate his age.
Kim Novak overdid it in the fillers, but she also got them shortly before her Oscar’s appearance and they didn’t have time to settle which made her look like a mask. She’s also the reason a lot of older stars decking making appearances at award shows because of what will be written and said about their looks.
Page is 78 and looks much better when he keeps his hair short otherwise it looks scraggly and highlights his age.
I think Michelle Phillips may have some health issues because she looks pretty good in the aughts and in the early 2010’s. I think a lot of people forget that most people used to think an 80 year old looked like Sophia petrillo or the where’s the beef lady.

R392 some people (celebrities whatever) hold out well for a long time (Goldie Hawn is the perfect example) into their 50s and 60s and then suddenly it the wall and hit it hard. It could be illness but not necessarily. Agreed however that she did look very good to great well into middle age and a bit beyond that.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | March 4, 2022 2:52 AM |
@395 -
As another poster said above, what is the cut off? It is ridiculous to say that someone like Goldie Hawn has aged horribly when the woman is 76 years old. Would you be happier if she made herself look like something out of Madame Tussauds? Her cute pixie years were over 50 years ago. When I hear "aged horribly" I think of attractive people (20s) who look like hell in their (40s-early 50s).
Better examples would be Russell Crowe, Marlon Brando, and Mickey Rourke.
I don't even think Hawn looks bad, period. Let alone for someone who's a decade into her social security years.

I don't know about celebrities dying in their 40s and 50s, but the careers of many actresses died when they were no longer young and pretty. Probably still true today.
Maybe now there are more paparazzi who track down older actresses because showing how their looks have gone or showing bad plastic surgery sells tabloids.

[quote]Page is 78 and looks much better when he keeps his hair short otherwise it looks scraggly and highlights his age.
Jimmy Page has fake teeth and a new nose, both due to years of cocaine and heroin use. His own teeth were quite nice for a British person, but the drugs sure took their toll on his looks and his health. Sure, he's old, but he looks older than 78.
Page always had a glorious mane, better than some womens hair, but his hair is now very thin. He wears it flat and in a short low pony tail. When he did that music special with Jack While and The Edge, "It Might Get Loud", he still had some volume left, now, you can see his scalp. The photo below is how his hair looked in that special.
Page's hair still looked good here, but this photo is from 2009. I don't think there are many actual current photos of Page floating around, he's become somewhat of a recluse.

Robert Plant looks quite bad. He's now 73. My elderly mom isn't this wrinkly.
Not sure if Plant did heroin like Page, but he was a smoker and a heavy drinker. If he did drugs, it was likely cocaine. I do know he smoked weed, probably still does.

Getting old ain't for wimps.
You have to hand it to any of these people, 1 for still being alive and 2 for allowing themselves to be photographed when we can all readily compare them to their flawless young selves until the sun blows up and/or the internet breaks.
Even if we all took impeccable care, we'd age differently and finally get that sunken in gnome head pink scalp (if we're pink) look.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | March 5, 2022 1:22 AM |
R406 There is also the genetics factor. Also, there is also the likelihood that he was exposed to too much sun over the years. Sun is actually healthy for you and necessary for physical and mental health, but many people during the 1970s and 1980s would roast in the sun for hours year after year to have deep tans, and many years later find they developed wrinkles and saggy skin. A close friend of mine who loved tanning every year now looks a lot older as he's past 60 due to all the lines and wrinkles he acquired.
