R16 Because for one thing, if a country has disputed territory (Crimea), you can't join NATO. Because that would mean NATO immediately plunged into war to defend Crimea from the Russians if Ukraine joined. NATO actually has a bunch of conditions you have to fulfil before you can join..

And as for your WWIII comment, it is my belief that if Ukraine HAD been a member of NATO that the Russians probably wouldn't have attacked Ukraine at all.

The NATO argument has never really made sense to me because it's an alliance that is about collective protection from someone attacking a sovereign country. So if you have no intention of attacking a sovereign country, why feel threatened by a country joining NATO? NATO is not an alliance that agrees to initiate an invasion.
