Chernobyl
Ukrainians to Russia: "You bitches want Chernobyl? Take it, it's your fucking expensive financial black hole for all eternity now!"
Seriously, Russia made a HUGE stupid mistake by taking over Chernobyl. When this is all over, Ukraine should REFUSE to take Chernobyl back. Since Russia is so proud of being the Soviet Union's successor state & Putin wants to re-establish it, and it was ultimately the Soviet bureaucracy that created the problem at Chernobyl in the first place, let Russia pay the annual cleanup costs there from now on.

I'm concerned about why they took it - it's an easy madman way to threaten the west. Interfere and we'll shell Chernobyl.
As for the costs of clean-up - unfortunately the world can't take that risk, for much the same reasons.

Unfortunately Ukraine isn’t going to have the option of taking it back. The country is falling. Welcome back to the Cold War era Soviet times.

They took it because it’s on a major axis of advance on the way to Kyiv. That’s why.

Putin should be imprisoned alone at Chernobyl, like Hess at Spandau. At mealtimes he can hunt radioactive game bare-handed and restore his tarnished macho pride.

Naw, Russia wouldn't dare to sabotage it... at least half the stirred-up fallout would end up in Belarus. Belarus might be Putin's favorite lapdog, but even lapdogs will bite back if you abuse them badly enough.

I assumed the Chernobyl quarantine zone by definition was only nominally defended allowing an easy open path for Russian radiation resistant armored personnel carriers. And few if any civilians to get in the way. Russian generals can read a map.

r3, it would actually be an interesting twist if Ukraine were to throw defenses at the southern portion of the Exclusion Zone with the express goal of merely DELAYING the advance of Russian troops, and keeping them stalled and stuck there for longer than anyone would regard as 'safe'.
The Exclusion Zone is a weird place... much of it isn't terribly dangerous, but only as long as you don't go around kicking up dust & debris.. which, of course, they'll be doing a lot of. That kind of unseen danger fucks with your head, especially when you're there involuntarily and don't quite believe the military brass regards your safety has being particularly important.

(r8, continued)
Case in point: a few well-placed explosives that are merely NEXT to the road could kick up enough potentially radioactive dust to make driving through the area suicidally dangerous for days, if not weeks or months. One such cloud, they might risk driving through. Create a whole bunch of radioactive dust clouds along a 10km stretch of roadway, and the risk equation changes CONSIDERABLY. Of course, some of that dust would make its way further south, but it COULD render all viable paths through the exclusion zone impassable for quite a while.

The Russian military took control of Chernobyl power plant in eastern Ukraine which has been permanently shut down since the 1986 nuclear disaster during the SovietUnion USSR era. Now comes reports that radioactivity has spiked as result of the invasion.

Putin is working closely with the American Republicans to sabotage the Biden administration. This conflict will pre-occupy Joe so he can't focus on anything constructive. People will blame him for the fall of Ukraine and the resulting carnage. They're going to try and bait him into an ugly civil war.
Joe is right to just sanction them to filth. Supply Europe with another oil/gas option. Promote green energy.

Europe needs natural gas as well. How will they find a sufficient replacement? What will happen if Puttie decides to shut down Nordstream 1? This IS going to happen soon because he’s lost his mind!

R13. The Republicans and the RNC is funded by the Kremlin mafia state! It’s obvious. There is no NRA to hide all the millions of Russian dark money aimed at funding powerful Republican officials campaigns. For Christs sake there was even a photo of top Republicans and NRA bigwigs sucking Russian cock in Moscow. Russia is also paying some if not all of Dump’s astronomical legal fees through the RNC. How else can the RNC afford it by simply taking MAGAT money and the Kocks. It’s common sense. You just have to connect the dots.

R1, they didn't need to capture the site to drop bombs on it, if that's what they'd wanted. If anything, their being in it might be expected to keep it safer from shelling.
It said on the Australian news that the Ukrainians were concerned about containment of the radiation because the Russians dismissed the Ukrainian public servants who currently run it, or guard it, or whatever they do, and who know the procedures required to keep it under control. At the time of that report there was no spiking yet.

Great commentary and insight from Ben Sasse (R). He’s a good Puke. He is inferring that Chink Bastard ever-smiling Shitface Xi Jinping green lighted Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Xi is another fuckhole that needs to be dealt with in the long term. But like Ukraine, his self-announced lifetime Presidency ouster will have to come from the Chinese people themselves.

IEAA says it's a false alarm
the IAEA said the cut power line “does not provide power to safety-related equipment,” and added: “Due to time elapsed since the 1986 Chornobyl accident, the heat load of the spent fuel storage pool and the volume of cooling water contained in the pool is sufficient to maintain effective heat removal without the need for electrical supply.”

REUTERS.- Russian soldiers who took over the #Chernobyl nuclear power plant drove their armored vehicles unprotected through a radioactive contamination zone in the forest, raising clouds of potentially dangerous dust, plant workers told Reuters.
LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) - Russian soldiers who seized the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster drove their armoured vehicles without radiation protection through a highly toxic zone called the "Red Forest", kicking up clouds of radioactive dust, workers at the site said.
The two sources said soldiers in the convoy did not use any anti-radiation gear. The second Chernobyl employee said that was "suicidal" for the soldiers because the radioactive dust they inhaled was likely to cause internal radiation in their bodies.
