Maks Chmerkovskiy Posts Tearful Clips from Kyiv as Russia Invades Ukraine: 'I Want to Go Back Home'

Maks Chmerkovskiy is sharing his "emotional" experience from near the center of Kyiv, Ukraine.

The Ukrainian-born dancer, 42, posted a series of videos to his Instagram Thursday afternoon local time, in which he is standing on a balcony in the country's capital as military sirens can be heard from the streets below.

"I'm in Kyiv, contrary to what I probably should've done a while ago … and not that no one saw this coming, but everybody was hoping that the finality of this situation would be averted, that there wasn't going to be these kind of aggressive measures," Chmerkovskiy says of the Russian invasion that recently began to unfold.

In a second video, the Dancing with the Stars alum is seen tearing up as he pans the camera to show the "reality" of the situation and the nearby city center, saying "it's been a little difficult" to witness the fallout and adding, "You know me — I stay strong, and I don't show it."

"But I want to go back home. And I realize that I have the way to — I realize that I have a different passport, and my family is far away," continues Chmerkovskiy, who is married to fellow DWTS pro Peta Murgatroyd and shares one child, 5-year-old son Shai Aleksander, with her.

Chmerkovskiy goes on to plead with Russian forces to cease conflict, as he is "about to go into a bomb shelter because s---'s going down."

"In 2022's civilized world, this is not the way we do things," he says to the camera. "I think the Russians need to get up and actually say something, because no one's opinion is being heard. This is all one man's ambition of something, and however convenient it sounds in Moscow, however comfortable you are where you are in Russia, I just don't think this is the right thing."

The invasion began shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in the Donbas area of Ukraine, a separatist region in the country which he said this week should be independent — a move rejected by the U.S. and Ukraine.

In a televised address, Putin said the operation is to "demilitarize" Ukraine and that Ukrainian servicemen who put down their arms will be able to safely leave the combat zone, per the Associated Press. He also issued a warning to anyone who tried to intervene, saying they "must know that Russia's answer will be immediate, and will lead to such consequences as you never experienced in your history," according to The New York Times.

Chmerkovskiy says in his video footage, "I'm uneasy, I'm very scared … but I do know, at the very least, I have a chance. I have a passport and a way out. A lot of people here do not, and it's f---ing nonsense."

Chmerkovskiy wraps his video by saying how much he loves his home country, explaining, "I have [had] a f---ing incredible pleasure to spend, on the ground, about six months now, and I've fell back in love — I never fell out of love, but I know now who these people are. I know who this country is, what it represents, what it stands for."

"And it's completely not what is being portrayed to the Russian people in order to justify this invasion," he continues.

The father of one ends by asking his fans and followers "to please respect a little bit about our situation at this time" and not "bombard" wife Murgatroyd, 35, with messages. Murgatroyd appears to be in the U.S.

"It's not what's important right now," Chmerkovskiy says. "I'm gonna do my best to try and keep you informed. I'm not a journalist — I have absolutely no reason to do this other than I just want an opinion of someone else, 'cause news is crazy and the reports have been insane. Love you all."

[quote] Maks Chmerkovskiy Calls Kirstie Alley Out for War Post as He Shares New Updates from Ukraine

Maks Chmerkovskiy is calling his former Dancing with the Stars partner Kirstie Alley out after she posted about the war in Ukraine on Twitter.

In a since-deleted Tweet that Chmerkovskiy, 42, reposted to his Instagram Story on Saturday, Alley, 71, wrote, "I don't know what's real or what is fake in this war. So I won't be commenting. I'll pray instead."

Chmerkovskiy — who was born in Ukraine and has been in the country during the ongoing Russian invasion — shared his own message in response to Alley's tweet. He wrote over the screenshot, "Dear Kirstie, we haven't spoken in a while, but I clearly remember being right next to you while you were organizing trucks of aid during Hurricane Sandy and I remember all that you were saying to me about situations where innocent are suffering."

"That same energy is needed right now. No one needs your prayer if you don't know what's real or fake," he added.

Before sharing his public message to Alley, Chmerkovskiy posted additional updates from Ukraine, where he's been keeping his followers up-to-date on his Instagram Story.

"The night went fine but there was a lot of shooting in Kyiv and some neighborhoods around … This is real, this is really happening," he said, before giving further details about two of his friends who had left the country.

"A friend of mine drove from yesterday morning … it took them 17 hours to get to the border from Kyiv," Chmerkovskiy said, adding that typically the trip takes about five hours. "Everything is crazy."

He continued, "Another friend of mine … they're going to try and make their way over to the border to get reunited with some distant relatives who flew in and they're in Poland now."

The DWTS pro said that at the Ukrainian border, men cannot leave the country: "If the families are going all together, the men have to stay back and go back, and women can go forward."

He also said the next 24 hours would be "crucial," and admitted that he was "not a military adviser," but told his followers, "it seems like the Ukrainians are making a pretty dramatic stance and [are] pretty heroic and pretty historic, if I may."

"The kids and elderly are not part of this. The women are not part of this. F— it, man, even the men are not part of this. We didn't choose to be. There's gotta be a way to pause it and continue talking for as long as it takes. That's my wish," he added.

Chmerkovskiy stressed the importance of "public outcry" in response to the war in Ukraine, urging his followers, "Keep doing that. The more this bombardment happens, the more it becomes reality of what's really happening versus what you're being told … Let's just be as loud as we can … It is not your fight, until it is. Don't want to be dramatic, but I don't feel safe in my distant Malibu if Ukraine falls under this situation."

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine earlier this week, according to the Ukraine government. The attack is still evolving, but explosions and airstrikes have been reported, with threats mounting against the capital, Kyiv, a city of 2.8 million people.

Numerous residents have been seen trying to flee. "We are facing a war and horror. What could be worse?" one 64-year-old woman living in Kyiv told the Associated Press.

President Vladimir Putin's aggression toward Ukraine has been widely condemned by the international community, including with economic sanctions and NATO troops massing in the region. Putin insists Ukraine has historic ties to Russia and he is acting in the interest of so-called "peacekeeping."

He's a dancer, not a fighter R39.

Lol.

You can tell he's scared.

He probably wants to leave, but they won't let him.

He holds Ukranian citizenship, and males between 20 and 60 cannot leave the country.

by Anonymousreply 41February 27, 2022 1:12 PM

[quote] He's a dancer, not a fighter.

He had to lift and carry Kirstie Alley around the dance floor. I'd say that was as much fighting as it was dancing.

by Anonymousreply 42February 27, 2022 5:22 PM

He's had back problems ever since, R42.

by Anonymousreply 43February 27, 2022 11:40 PM

He’s been hiding away in a secret location with a bunch of the media etc. he isn’t out there with a gun like most of the other men.

He was on live this morning and you could see him practically shaking. He’s terrified. He has right to be but he’s locked away in a secret location while there are men and women out there fighting and waiting.

by Anonymousreply 44February 27, 2022 11:44 PM

R44 Why didn’t he just go home when he had the chance if he wasn’t going to be man enough to fight for his country?

by Anonymousreply 45February 28, 2022 12:41 AM

Isn’t Ukraine his home? He doesn’t live in the states permanently. He just works here. He’s a Ukraine citizen.

by Anonymousreply 46February 28, 2022 12:43 AM

R46 His wife and kid live in the US I believe and apparently he was in the US not long before the invasion. It makes no sense for him to have gone back to Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 63February 28, 2022 1:58 AM

R62 ok, and? You think all those men there fighting are soldiers?

by Anonymousreply 64February 28, 2022 1:58 AM

To be fair, he's American. He's been in this country since he was 14. He's not going to fight for a country that hasn't been his home since he was a teenager especially as he has a wife and child in the U.S. But the obvious fear does make him less attractive. I get it; I'd probably be the same way. However, I am sure that the men and women who are fighting are terrified, they're doing it anyway.

by Anonymousreply 65February 28, 2022 2:04 AM

He’s not American.

by Anonymousreply 68February 28, 2022 3:44 AM

Can't believe he didn't get out when he could have.

I don't expect him to be willing to street fight for a country he and his family left when he was 14. He's been in the US for 2/3 of his life.

by Anonymousreply 69February 28, 2022 4:20 AM

He’s been back and forth most of his life. R69 do the research before commenting.

Many people in the comments were calling him out on running away while so many are fighting. He was speaking about how much he loves his home country and how strong they are and people kept saying “stop saying we when you fled”.

by Anonymousreply 105March 2, 2022 5:24 AM

Nothing wrong with becoming a US citizen and having a nice life and family in the US. But he also keeps Ukrainian citizenship for its benefit and was working there until the invasion, making good money as a citizen, not as a foreigner. But cherry-pickers with dual citizenship are notorious: only rights, no obligations.

So eager to get back to his wife and kid yet what’s the first thing he does? A publicity tour. Piece of shit coward.

by Anonymousreply 119March 4, 2022 10:58 PM

Maks Chmerkovskiy is a 42-year old man and father of a kid. Yet he lived his situation like a fucking teenaged girl, crying, shaking and documenting everything on social media. What a huge mistake! He knew he was going to get the fuck outta there on his US passport, did he really need to publicize his chickenshit behavior? Just do your cowardice in private. Had he kept himself off social media and stopped trying to get cheap fame, this wouldn’t have backfired on him and he would have been home with no one the wiser that he left on the kiddie train. Literally the only man on the women and children train because HE TOLD EVERYONE. What a pussy.

by Anonymousreply 120March 5, 2022 1:27 AM

I can’t believe they let him take a spot from a woman and child

by Anonymousreply 121March 5, 2022 1:35 AM

r121 He flaunted the most privileged status symbol there - US passport, implying he's not like 'those people'...

by Anonymousreply 122March 5, 2022 1:40 AM

He’s also known there. He’s been on TV there for years and was their Bachelor too.

by Anonymousreply 123March 5, 2022 1:44 AM

You're heard on Train to Busan. Now comes the next motion picture that didn't need to be made. Train to Warsaw. Maks Chmerkovskiy stars in a role he was born he can play. There is only one man on this train.

R124 OMG when I read about him Billy Zane’s character in Titanic was the first thing that popped into my head!

by Anonymousreply 125March 5, 2022 2:04 AM

Gleb and his then wife were Putin stans on their Facebook a few years ago. Wonder if that still stands.

by Anonymousreply 126March 5, 2022 2:12 AM

Gleb either won or came second in the Russian version of DWTS right after Sochi (his partner was the figure skating gold medal there, Adelina Sotnikova). I think it was 2014. Oh, and his wife was a judge on the same season!

Then the three of them (and Gleb's child) went to Disneyland together.

Strange world. Russia and Ukraine are full of dancers and figure skaters. Two Russians on Strictly Come Dancing now (also, two Ukrainians) - DWTS-US has Gleb and Artem, both Russians. Sasha Farber is from Ukraine and his family moved to Australia after Chernobyl when he was a child. I'm probably forgetting some...

by Anonymousreply 127March 5, 2022 2:16 AM

Someone I know from Germany is terrified and ran away to Dubai for a while. He is thinking of leaving Germany because he has a feeling a lot of bad is gonna happen soon. This is just the beginning

by Anonymousreply 128March 5, 2022 2:21 AM

Attention Whore...I noticed the cameras were there when he showed up at the airport...He has a gay basher vibe...That face isn't getting hotter with age either.

by Anonymousreply 129March 5, 2022 2:23 AM

I never got gay friendly vibes from Maks but ironically Gleb is super pro gay

by Anonymousreply 130March 5, 2022 2:28 AM

How embarrassing. I'd lay low for a couple of years if I were him.

by Anonymousreply 131March 5, 2022 2:45 AM

The war starts and Maks runs home...And I do not believe for one second he was "arrested"..Sounds like a bullshit celebrity story made up for publicity. Like when he goes around talking about how he "refuses" to return to DWTS. He probably is off DWTS for being a pain in the ass behind the scenes. He is not exactly rolling in jobs.

Does he have dual citizenship?

by Anonymousreply 133March 5, 2022 3:23 AM

R133 = Good question. His wife is Australian...WTF is he doing here without a job?...Send Maks HOME to fight the Russians!!..

by Anonymousreply 134March 5, 2022 3:26 AM

Yes. He has a Dual Citizenship. Him and his wife do.

He’s only been a US citizen since 2019.

by Anonymousreply 135March 5, 2022 3:28 AM

Thanks, R135. That's what I suspected. So, in good times, he was happy to benefit from being a citizen of Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 136March 5, 2022 3:29 AM

The Ukraine War is the best thing to happen in Maks life in years. Now he gets to run around talking about being heartbroken for a country he wouldn't even fight for himself. He ran away. Coward.

by Anonymousreply 137March 5, 2022 3:33 AM

[quote] Does he have dual citizenship?

No. He’s a “duel” citizen.

by Anonymousreply 138March 5, 2022 3:34 AM

He said what kept him from being locked up for trying to escape was the fact he was on DWTS. The privilege

R139 Does he not realize the more he talks, it’s just making people hate him more? What an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 140March 5, 2022 1:04 PM

GMA just did a big story on this asshole's reunion with his wife and child in America. What a piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 141March 7, 2022 12:18 PM

R141 Another reason to not watch GMA.

by Anonymousreply 142March 7, 2022 3:29 PM

Speaking of "spineless little bitches" who flee their homeland because they're too chicken to stay and fight with the other men -- the following is from Twitter, posted by Maks' brother Val, who was on DWTS last season with a partner:

valentin Feb 27, 2022

"...I’M GOING TO TRY REALLY HARD TO FORGIVE AND UNDERSTAND THE SILENCE OF ALL MY RUSSIAN SPEAKING FRIENDS, MY COWORKERS, AND SPECIFICALLY THE DANCERS THAT HAVE COMPETED, TRAINED AND VISITED THE CITIES THEY ARE WATCHING BURN ALONG SIDE THE UKRAINIANS...

… To all of my Russian speaking friends that are quietly continuing to stay in your lane ignoring what’s happening… you are spineless little bitches. And I will remind you of that next time we line up on that dance floor."

^ He's threatening the Russians with a dance-off. Both of these cowardly assholes need to be deported back to Ukraine to fight or just STFU.

by Anonymousreply 144March 7, 2022 8:49 PM

To add insult to injury, these guys are basically athletes - still dancing, doing jive and other latin dances, that are fucking hard to do and require a lot of energy and agility - these two are probably fitter than 90+ per cent of all the other Ukrainian men who are staying in their country (and 17% of the Ukrainians fighting are women!)

I hope the other dancers remind Val of that when he lines up on that treacherous dance floor.

by Anonymousreply 145March 7, 2022 8:53 PM

D/L help me: I’m trying to recall a film which involved Ingrid Bergman shepherding a group of children out of a war zone on a train. What was it called?

I’m thinking Maks could be the perfect replacement for Ms Bergman in a modern-day remake. And instead of saving dozens of snotty children, Maks could just be rescuing his adorable self.

by Anonymousreply 146March 7, 2022 9:23 PM

R146, I'm not a Shriner's blanket, I'm a MAN, damn it! A 100 percent AMERICAN man.

by Anonymousreply 147March 7, 2022 9:30 PM

[quote] He's threatening the Russians with a dance-off.

It's a war tactic that worked well in 1980s music videos. No reason that it can't work now.

by Anonymousreply 148March 7, 2022 9:52 PM

^ Are you Pat Benetar or Michael Jackson?

by Anonymousreply 149March 7, 2022 9:55 PM

[quote] “I cried on the way from the airport. I felt embarrassed,” he said. “I felt embarrassed the entire ride back because I was the only man on the train amongst all women and children.”

Ouch. I’m a little bitch too, but maybe under the circumstances it’s not a good idea for him to do puff piece interviews on morning TV.

by Anonymousreply 150March 7, 2022 10:05 PM

GMA has no choice.

Maks works for DWTS which is on ABC.

They are forced to give him good publicity.

No matter how much they hate it.

by Anonymousreply 151March 7, 2022 10:19 PM

[quote]GMA has no choice. Maks works for DWTS which is on ABC.

Huh? He left that show in 2018. Do your research.

by Anonymousreply 152March 7, 2022 10:27 PM

^ Yes, because we all follow this asshole's career intensely.

by Anonymousreply 153March 7, 2022 10:41 PM

“En Garde!”, says the duel citizen!

Seriously, if he returns to DWTS, I’m sure they’ll have a tear-jerking segment on how he had to flee under fire.

by Anonymousreply 154March 7, 2022 11:05 PM

R153 Then why did you respond as if you did, dumbass?

by Anonymousreply 155March 8, 2022 12:11 AM

Some stupid cunt started another thread.

Tacky fucking thirsty bitch.

by Anonymousreply 156March 8, 2022 12:11 AM

If he is also a Ukrainian citizen he broke the law when he fled with his US passport. Maks, women and children first, please, out of the way...

by Anonymousreply 157March 8, 2022 12:16 AM

r146 The Inn of the Sixth Happiness?

by Anonymousreply 158March 8, 2022 1:32 AM

Just looked it up - Google said Ukraine's constitution does not allow dual citizenship. The US does - his wife Peta said he only had US citizenship and I think I read he got it in 2019. Just in time.

by Anonymousreply 159March 8, 2022 3:31 AM

[quote] … To all of my Russian speaking friends that are quietly continuing to stay in your lane ignoring what’s happening… you are spineless little bitches. And I will remind you of that next time we line up on that dance floor."

This was unnecessary and uncalled for, on Val's part.

ABC is going to have a mess on their hands, if a political war carries over to a "war" on stage.

You can't have your employees fighting at work, over something like this.

If that were the case, fights would be breaking out in offices all over the US.

I have a russian co-worker who immigrated to the US, and is pro-Putin. And though I completely disagree with her, and would like to say many things about her politics, I don't.

Work just isn't the place for it.

by Anonymousreply 160March 8, 2022 1:24 PM

It isn't, R160, but your co-worker is the equivalent of pro-Hitler, so I would certainly have nothing to do with her. And wtf is she in this country as Putin describes the West as the root of all evil? She should go back and rot in Mother Russia.

by Anonymousreply 161March 8, 2022 2:43 PM

Maks is an embarrassment.

Peta must want to crawl under a rock.

Especially being an Australian.
