She had hot lips, but she couldn't live forever.

by Anonymousreply 1February 24, 2022 9:17 PM

Love her! RIP sexy voice

by Anonymousreply 2February 24, 2022 9:22 PM

I got her mixed up with Sally Kirkland.

by Anonymousreply 3February 24, 2022 9:23 PM

She was hilarious in BACK TO SCHOOL.

by Anonymousreply 4February 24, 2022 9:33 PM

I'll always remember her reading Molly Bloom's passage from Ulysses in the movie Back to School.

by Anonymousreply 5February 24, 2022 9:34 PM

I loved her in everything! When people would remind her that she was in the very first Star Trek episode, she would say she was 12 years old at the time. She was so great as the conniving wife of Martin Landau on The Outer Limits. She was hilarious as a dippy mystic in Serial.

by Anonymousreply 6February 24, 2022 9:36 PM

R5 “Call me when you don’t have any class!”

by Anonymousreply 7February 24, 2022 9:37 PM

Her best film was Lost Horizon (1973), a musical.

by Anonymousreply 8February 24, 2022 9:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 9February 24, 2022 9:40 PM

Teenagers made her hate her hips!

by Anonymousreply 10February 24, 2022 9:40 PM

She was iconic in the film SERIAL.

by Anonymousreply 11February 24, 2022 9:40 PM

"I NEVER miss a Liv Ullman musical!"

by Anonymousreply 12February 24, 2022 9:40 PM

R4 I agree. Sally’s character was a learned, worldly, college professor. Rodney Dangerfield was his usual, regular smart ass self. The combo was comedy gold.

by Anonymousreply 13February 24, 2022 9:46 PM

I liked her music too

But she appeared in a lot of rubbish movies that I didn't see.

"My God, they've shot him!"

- MASH. Houlihan, while being a cheerleader, hilariously mistakes a starting gun in a football game for a real gun.

Kellerman was truly hilarious in MASH but, to an uncomfortable degree for laughs, her character was subject to lot of mysogyny.

It was noted by many critics that Robert Altman's female characters were subject to a lot of shit. I think he defended himself about that, and, iirc, Cher may have defended him, too.

by Anonymousreply 20February 24, 2022 10:21 PM

R20 Altman was no misogynist, are you kidding me? It's a problem that a female character comes into conflict or hardship during a movie? This is one of the dumbest criticisms I see towards any "oppressed" group being depicted in a film.

He wrote some of the best leading roles for women in the 1970s while other director relegated them to arm candy - McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Images, Nashville, 3 Women, A Wedding. I always saw Altman as one of the more pro-women directors of the New Hollywood cohort.

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2022 10:27 PM

[quote] Altman's female characters were subject to a lot of shit.

What sort are you alleging?

by Anonymousreply 22February 24, 2022 10:30 PM

R20 And the misogyny she experiences from the other characters isn't excessive if you take into account that the, you know, actual context. How do you think those guys in Korea treated women in real life? The whole thing is an anti-war satire made at the height of the Vietnam period, and part of that satire is invoking the ineptitude, cruelty and immaturity of our so-called frontline heroes.

by Anonymousreply 23February 24, 2022 10:32 PM

Oh geeze it was funny ! Enough of the misogyny , it was funny since when cant smart women take a joke.

by Anonymousreply 24February 24, 2022 10:36 PM

Had no idea she was married for 36 years (husband passed away a few years ago) and had kids.

by Anonymousreply 25February 24, 2022 10:36 PM

I always loved her. Even if she wasn't always in great movies, she was great. She even gave it her all when she played a MILF porn star in Meatballs III.

Sorry to hear she died, and of dementia. It's a cruel disease.

by Anonymousreply 26February 24, 2022 10:37 PM

But the joke isn't on the guys, r23, especially in the scene where she's taking a shower and they have the shower walls drop exposing her as naked to the entire unit as they applaud from their chairs.

I find how she's treated by the other characters uncomfortable even as I laugh at some aspects of MASH.

by Anonymousreply 27February 24, 2022 10:39 PM

She played Jodie Foster's mother in Foxes.

by Anonymousreply 28February 24, 2022 10:41 PM

[quote]Her best film was Lost Horizon (1973), a musical.

Met her a few times and I have "Lost Horizon" signed by her and it got such a drubbing when it opened she was amazed all through the years when people told her how much they liked it.

by Anonymousreply 34February 24, 2022 11:02 PM

She's requested to be buried in Hidden Valley.

by Anonymousreply 35February 24, 2022 11:05 PM

R27 If you think this you misread the entire movie.

by Anonymousreply 36February 24, 2022 11:06 PM

One of the greats.

No one like her today.

by Anonymousreply 37February 24, 2022 11:08 PM

The movie gets a bad rap, but Sally Kellerman was terrific in Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”, and Kellerman said more than once that it was one of her favorites.

by Anonymousreply 64February 25, 2022 12:31 AM

I'm surprised she had dementia.

The last thing I saw her in was the Marc Maron sitcom "Maron", where she played his mother, and she was as delightful as ever. And that doesn't seem that long ago.

Sal was on one episode of That Girl and one episode of Hotel. I loved her in the Robert Altman film Brewster McLoud.

by Anonymousreply 75February 25, 2022 3:58 AM

Re Altman's supposed misogyny - this does seem to get brought up a lot, but it's worth mentioning that actresses generally loved working with him (and vice-versa), and many worked with him in multiple films (Kellerman was in 3). Cher hated most of her directors, but liked Altman.

His real conflicts were with writers, since he viewed the script as a blueprint and had no qualms about radically altering it during production (often with input from actors).

[quote]She dropped out of Come Back to the 5 and Dime on broadway and was replaced by Karen Black. Sally, Sandy and Cher would have been quite the 3some.

I thought Black was genius casting in that (and she was probably my favorite of the three) but I can see Sally doing a good job in that part as well.

Sally is just fabulous in this scene from Lost Horizon. You can't take your eyes off her. And that's in one of the worst movies ever made.

I always felt she overachieved in every part.

She didn't work enough in her later career. She could've been one of America's pop grande dames, like a later Helen Mirren/Maggie Smith type who could drop in to lend a shot of camp and heft to whatever.

This was me. The first time was the NY premiere of "Back To School". We talked a little while. Then I went to CHILLER when she was there to the get the "M*A*S*H" DVD signed. We were talking as she signed and I told her we met at the premiere. I wasn't paying attention to her writing but when I walked away she had written... Dear (Me) So lovely to see you again, Love Sally Kellerman. How sweet was that?

by Anonymousreply 90February 26, 2022 4:17 PM

She's on the Dick Cavett Show tonight on Decades.

by Anonymousreply 91February 28, 2022 5:54 PM

@ R19, R85, R87, R88 I've heard a bootleg audio recording of opening night of Breakfast at Tiffany's recorded from the sound board which starts with the overture, ends as people are milling out after the show and contains all the dialogue and songs in between. MTM tries her best but is miscast; Chamberlain is dull but pleasant; and Sally Kellerman completely steals the show. It only comes alive when Sally is on stage. She really should have been cast as Holly instead of Mag, but her name wouldn't sell tickets at the time. And the show was only going to work if they put the movie and stage and Holly sings "Moon River".
