Seems like dryers are all kind of similar except for size.
Top-load washers, specifically Maytag commercial, are supposed to be better than side-load.
Don't watch this guy's other videos, though.

Consumer Reports lists 7 LG front loading washers at the top of their list with the LG WM9000HVA Washing Machine coming in at #1. Since I think you need a subscription to go to a lot of content, I’ve linked to the model info.

Out of all the washers I've had Maytag is the only one that lasted. Dryers are pretty uncomplicated so, whatever

Grandma would think you were an idiot for using that today. I can just see all the BlogFraus trying to make manual washers a thing-- in the name of simplicity!
When I was 15 or so, I cut class and went to a fancy antique mall that I could spend hours in. I was in a room marveling over things on doilyed table- I didn't even know what they were.
An old man in overalls shuffled in (this was in Kansas) and he looked at me and looked at whatever I was looking at and said "You like this old stuff?" And I responded with an enthusiastic yes, and awaited validation.
"Well, you didn't have to live with it!" he said.

If you can, look for a washer with mechanical controls, not digital.
Circuit boards and water don't play nice together. Seals over time protecting the controls can dry out and allow water/stream to get to the circuits.
I don't wash enough loads per week for a front loader to make sense from a water saving aspect given the higher cost. Stick with a top loader if this is you too.

I bought the crazy Roper top loading washer and dryer at Lowe's. Six years and still doing fine. I like a top loader with an agitator.
My sister bought Whirlpool top loader about the same time and it's doing well, too.
I didn't ask about the Speed Queen models because I was too embarrassed to say the brand name.

Our Kenmore set, purchased in 1994, was still going strong when we sold & moved to our new house that has Maytag appliances. Top load, heavy duty, gas dryer. So far, Maytag stuff is doing fine--(we're crossing our fingers) also heavy duty top load, gas dryer. The new ones really make strange sounds & the new dishwasher doesn't dry as with previous--all in the name of fucking eco :)

I agree with with R7. I have a Samsung washing machine and I'm very happy with it. I wash daily, so efficiency is important for me. Bonus: Mine plays a hilariously monotone midi file of Schubert's "Forelle" when it's done. It always makes me think of how odd it would be to Schubert if he knew that some developer in Asia thought of his song (and probably the line where the fisherman makes the water muddy to trick the trout) and now there will be people whose first contact with Schubert is a washing mashine. Wild times. Anyway: Samsung.

Get a basic Whirlpool dryer with the lint filter on top. This is a time-tested design that has been around for decades. It is one of the most reliable dryers ever made and has everything you need. For a washer, I would have said a Whirlpool direct-drive top loader, but they don't make them anymore, which is a shame because they are virtually indestructible and easy to fix when necessary. I won't get rid of mine. Maybe find a lightly used one? That's what I would do. Other than that, I guess Speed Queen or Maytag Commercial series, but they're pricey.

R27, it hasn’t quit-quit but I can tell it has Two Week-itis. After a mere 15 minutes on the clock it gets hot headed and starts roaring complaints so loudly that I'm embarrassed my neighbors can hear it inside their homes and I scramble to the laundry room to give it a 30 minute break (every 15 minutes). Obviously, it is unionized!
I purchased my washer at the same time, and it is still hanging in there. Both the W&D sit on pedestals with storage drawers, where I keep my foster dog paraphernalia (blankets, dog towels, photo props, sweaters for the old ones, washable pee pads, heating pads) and cleaning textiles, mop head replacements , and I NEED that storage because I don't know where else to put this unsightly utility stuff. I don't want it cluttering my own 'living' space.
I was looking at new W/D combos and the prices are okay, but pedestals with drawers are like $250 each! And they're not interchangeable so I can't use my old pedestals with a new W/D.
After seeing that, I wonder if I shouldn't just have a repairman look at it.

when I need a new dryer I have bought the same one since 1970. First it was Kenmore but I am going to guess that it was made by Whirlpool because that is what my next two were and it is the same one as r26. I have always folded the clothes and set them on the door as that is what it was originally made for. I need a new one along with a new washer but I bought both of them in the late 90's.

I hate my front load Speed Queen it stinks. I clean it once every 2 weeks and scoop out loads of wet, greasy cat hair and gooky dirt. Bleach doesn’t kill the stink. Vinegar doesn’t kill the stink. I bought that cotton batting they use in hair salons and doused it with bleach or vinegar and stuffed it inside the rubber ring to kill the smell, then did hot water wash….nope.
I looked for a filter but all I could find was a pump under the washer. It’s one-piece front load washer & dryer , with dryer on top

Bought a new Samsung this week. My first truly new washer in forty years. I've always settled for reconditioned ones. I LOVE it. Top load, agitator, optional two-rinse. My only complaint is that the industry has decided that we don't need a warm or hot rinse. So I must settle for two cold water rinses. I did enough research to learn that people do not like their no-agitator washers. And side-loaders use too little water. I want clean clothes not energy-saving.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 25, 2022 6:10 PM |
OP/r31, it might just be a belt that needs to be replaced. If you can get a repairer to come look at it and fix for under $100 it would be worth it, but give them the make and model number to make sure they can get parts for a 15 year old appliance.
I went back to a GE top loading washer with an agitator. It has way more functions and cycles than my old Maytag front loader, each wash cycle is faster and clothes are cleaner. I got the matching dryer. I bought them at a local, family-owned and operated appliance store. Paid about $1200, including delivery, installation and removal of old ones.

My top loader HE (no agitator) is LG and I am pleased with it. No problems yet. LG dryer as well, with the steam function. I got it on a deal otherwise I wouldn't have paid for it and haven't found any particular benefit from it as I've used it. In my view, the less bells and whistles, the less to break. I don't need to run my appliances from my phone.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 25, 2022 10:14 PM |
I will say this about dishwashers.. I've had a Bosch SHXM4AY55N for six months. I bought it on the strength of the Consumer Reports rating. It is the worst appliance I ever bought. Dirty dishes, wet dishes, third rack is next to useless for getting things clean in particular and generally it feels really flimsy. The lower rack jumps the track all the time. It doesn't have an element, it has some system to extract the moisture and dry the dishes. Hah. Oh, and if you don't have a plug for it you have to hardwire it in and pay for an electrician to install Bosch's particular junction box. It's quieter than some dishwashers but not whisper silent.
I hate that thing. My appliance repair guy told me any of them are only built to last 3 years now so it didn't really matter what you bought. He said buy the cheapest dishwasher you can with the features you want. I find I use so few features, next time I am buying cheap.

R47, OP here. I had a Bosch dishwasher and currently have a Bosch gas cook top. Got both things at the same time. The control knobs on my Bosch cook top MELTED. They were metal with some kind of plastic chrome finish-- you wouldn't know it wasn't metal -- until it melts! I had to order four more at $125, those ones didn't have the plastic coating. It's so stupid that I hate to tell people about it, because people who have never had a Bosch anything think it's the best brand and can't possibly believe it, but while we're on the subject, there you go.
The Bosch dishwasher had a "finished" beep that could not be disabled and it was LOUD and continuous until I would get up and open the dishwasher door. It would beep for five seconds, three times. Like, three sets of three reps of that within the first ten minutes. Then it would stop for 10 minutes and do it again, 3x3, five second beeps, then wait ten minutes and do the exact same thing again. It was torture, because I like to start my dishwasher right before I go to bed. I would try to ignore the first ten minutes of beeping of I was deadass tired, but I would just start dozing off when it would jar me awake with the second round, and the third round. I couldn't wait for that thing to die die die, but when I had a repairman out, I asked him to disable it and he said they couldn't on that model.
If the designers can't even figure out that plastic cooktop knobs are bad and 30 minutes of incessant beeping is not a good idea, no wonder everything else about them is shitcrap! And yes, I got it at Lowe's, not a showroom, but still! I wasn't expecting ultra high-end but I didn't think it would be the fucking Yugo of appliances!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 25, 2022 10:44 PM |
R47, when we had to have ours repaired, it took awhile to get a person who worked on Bosch because I guess a lot of them won't even mess with them. Then it took for-fucking-ever to special order the parts, and wait for the special Bosch man to come back and fix it.
Never again!

My first set was Kenmore, which I bought in 1986. I moved across the country with them. When I sold my house in 2002, they were still going strong.
I recently replaced my 18 year old LG Tromm front-loading washer and gas dryer with a new set of .... LG's. I figure that eighteen years is a solid life expectancy for appliances. They're expensive, but amortized over their useful life, worth it. I think they are controllable via a smartphone app, but I don't get it. It's not like an app will transfer clean, wet clothes from the washer to the dryer!

R76, I was suprised at the performance given CR's reviews. But the reviews at CR for Bosch SHXM4AY55N from users are starkly divided - but many bad experiences.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 26, 2022 1:55 AM |
R76 here. Forgot to mention I also have Bosch washer and dryer and love them. But they are "compact" compared to what most people deem to be a regular size machine at 24" width. I have these because the condo doesn't have a proper way to vent the dryer to the outside so it works differently and doesn't need to vent to the outside (a condensation dryer, which captures the moisture from the hot air in a tank and pumps it down the drain instead of exhausting it outside in the air). Never any problems since 2011.
Regarding the smell in a front loader, in addition to keeping the door open a bit when not in use you need to wipe out the rubber door seal after you finish using it. Just keep a dish towel in the laundry area and wipe out the seal and it will never get moldy or smell. Also, if you use fabric softener and/or liquid detergent, you're more likely to have odor problems in the drum of the machine. Try Tide HE in the powder version. It doesn't contribute to gunk build up.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 26, 2022 2:03 AM |
My HE top load requires a clean every month. There's a cycle.. you fill the bleach dispenser and it cleans it with hot water. Do the front loads require that? I have to say most people who say don't like their front load.

I think getting the right appliances is basically luck. I have a whirlpool washer which broke several times in the first 3 months that I had it. I told the store I bought it from that I wanted a new one. They called Whirlpool and said Whirlpool would give me a new one which they never did. I need to replace it now but I bought it in 1998. I bought a freezer once made by Philco-Ford. It broke exactly 30 seconds after the delivery truck pulled away. It broke every month. I finally had the repairman, who was getting twice his fee because Philco was paying for it, finally told me to never call him again. By this time the company had been sold to White-Westinghouse who gave me a brand new one . The philco was now, about 5-7 years old. The White-West lasted me 32 years. They were no longer making appliances so bought an Amana. I have had it for about 14 years now. One reason appliances don't last as long is because they have made it difficult to clean them. The dust under the Amana is terrible to get to and I can't ever get it all. I was told to blow it out from the back but they put a panel in so I couldn't. I never knew this but you are supposed to have a repairman clean your dryer out once a year. The man across the street owns an appliance store so he told me how to take apart the dryer to get rid of all the extra lint and such. Dust is the enemy to everything.

I have the maytag commercial washer as shown in the video. It's basic but does the job. No choice of load size, there's only one setting: large. I got it because of the top loading feature and the dials. I was told by a repair person to avoid electronic panels. Expensive if they fail. There's nothing wrong with old school style. I've had it about 7 years with one repair this past October which is par for the course, imo. I rarely buy the extended warranty because they're bullshit. As for a dryer, I recommend a cheap decent model. There are no bells and whistles needed there.

Most people believe appliances are not made with the same quality as they once were. Good ol' empirical evidence supports this belief.
Manufacturers have relentlessly sought to shorten the buying cycle to increase profits. Selling appliances that last 15+ years is not seen by appliance makers today to be a sustainable business model.
The poster above [R26] who mentioned the Whirlpool direct drive washer technology is onto something. I have one of these machines and it is 28 years old, still washing two or three loads per week. I think when it finally quits I will look for a used one.
I am completely unimpressed with the build quality, load sizes, new "features," and outrageous prices of today's washing machines. I don't want to forced to buy another washer after just 10 years or less.

[quote] I refuse to buy front-loading washers. They develop a smell over time
Agree, the problem is you can't soak them with a cleaning solution as easily as a top loader. A few times a year I fill my top loader with hot water, then add a gallon of vinegar and let it sit for an hour, then turn it back on and finish the cycle. Because I'm washing greasy work clothes, when it hits the rinse cycle and is empty, I stop it and then go in with a plastic scrubbie and do a quick wipe-down of the "ring" that develops, kind of like bathtub ring. The grease build-up scrubs off nicely after a vinegar soak. I cannot even imagine doing that with a front loader.

I use a vinegar cleaning spray on the ring around the door of my front loader. It sort of works.
I want a pink washer!

We got a Maytag a few years ago to replace a shitty, awful GE washer that broke constantly. It was really quite good!
by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 26, 2022 3:25 PM |
I bought these. They've been very good. No problems for three years.

I was considering the stacked unit, but I went with r93.

The combo unit rather. There was a different stacked one I was looking at as well.

Hang your clothes to dry - it's better for the clothes and dryers use a shit ton of electricity.

I have been line drying my laundry since 2008. Will never go back to mechanical tumble dryers.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | February 26, 2022 3:43 PM |
Ain't no shame buying used when you select a washer that is built like a tank, that will last for many years, and that costs so little compared to the new crappy models in the stores.

My Speed Queen washer does a load in a flash and everything comes out super clean. When I first got it last year I couldn't believe I didn't have to listen to the washer working on the same load for 45 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | February 26, 2022 5:56 PM |
The size of the Speed Queen tub is a concern of mine. It's dinky.

A good place to get good deals on used washers and dryers is around large military bases.
Military personnel are constantly getting orders to relocate and have to liquidate quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | February 26, 2022 6:11 PM |
I love hanging out at military bases, especially the laundry rooms and men's showers.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | February 26, 2022 6:21 PM |
It's not that kind of cleaning up.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | February 26, 2022 6:26 PM |
If you live in a small household I would suggest an LG washer/dryer combo. We have been using one for over six years without any issues. Just put in the dirty clothes and they come out clean and dry. It doesn't require 240. It runs on 120. Large families would have a problem but for one or two people it is ideal.

Forgot to mention the Amana washer and dryer - it's owned by Maytag The washer is a high efficiency deal. Gone are mechanical timers and I wash everything in cold water so the electronics should last a bit longer. The dryer on the other hand is a mechanical dial and push button start. Back to the washer only three controls, water level, water temp and cycle type. It starts at the press of a button.
Of course the odyssey of getting that washer and dryer - ordered from Home Depot - they munged my address so that got me a refund. It took weeks too between order and potential delivery. Went to Best Buy and got the set for less than I paid at HD.

i was flipping thru pluto and saw an old price is right. they had frontload washers back then! 1960
i also bought lowe's cheap brand w&d during an expensive move 10 years ago. they are still going. roper? i think it is maytag too, but i forgot.

Yes, in my mind frontloaders in part had a comeback due to this unending obsession with the 'retro'-look. I am 43, but I always associated them with the 50s.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | February 26, 2022 9:27 PM |
From what I hear, the absolute best is the Speed Queen equipment when all the controls were still mechanical (no electronic circuit boards). Those were designed to last 25+ years. Unfortunately they now have electronic components even if they have knobs that appear mechanical. Simple is better. Companies need to stop fucking things up. And Newsflash: I do NOT need to control my machines with an app. I have to be right there at the machine to put stuff in and take it out. It takes 1 second to turn the machine on or off.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | February 26, 2022 9:38 PM |
Agree with the app thing, R111. When our ten year old Samsung refrigerator crapped out in October, we replaced it with an LG that has Bluetooth and an app. I can't imagine anything on my refrigerator that I would need to control remotely!
I sure as hell wasn't buying one of those refrigerators that photograph the interior of the refrigerator while you're at the store, or those ones with the "window" that let's you peer into your fridge while you're standing there directly in front of your fridge. What? Why?!!
by Anonymous | reply 112 | February 26, 2022 9:44 PM |
I bought my Speed Queen W&D last year and they are completely mechanical.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | February 26, 2022 11:39 PM |
What are the model numbers R113? I looked on the Speed Queen web site today and they don't have any models that don't have electronics. Some have dials there are electronic components and I think those dials are linked to electronics behind the scenes. The company announced a few years ago they were discontinuing mechanical-only controls to the dismay of many in the industry.

r109 When my parents bought their first house in 1949 it came with a Bendix front loader washing machine. My mother loved that machine and said back then that it saved on water and cleaned clothes much better. I remember that we had to be careful walking by it so that we didn't knock the door closed as they knew back then the door had to be left open.

I just looked at Craigslist. Seems like there are people selling old school appliances, incl. a Kenmore dryer. Seems worth a try for the prices I'm seeing. Dryers seem safer than washers. Less hygiene issues, I guess.

R99: I'm in Decatur, GA - during warmer months running the AC and all plus doing laundry once a week. Bill comes in less than $70.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | February 27, 2022 3:00 AM |
That's great, Luci, but you're still paying about 45¢ a load in your electric laundry dryer, money that adds up over time, and that you would not have to spend if you line dried your laundry.
Perhaps a trifling amount to you but your monthly bill in Decatur is abnormally low. I know, because I lived in the Great Lakes neighborhood there 20 years ago.

I like air drying. I use a gullwing drying rack.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 27, 2022 3:20 PM |
I don't airdry underwear or sheets etc. but I hang all my shirts and jeans. My dryer has a steam refresh cycle so they they fold pretty well. My mom used to line dry everything... outside in summer, inside in winter.
This is the most exciting post I've ever made.

I got a used dryer from the Mexican guy on Facebook! He delivered it and set it up, and hauled away my old one for $210!
And I got to keep my pedestal drawer!

I live in Texas-- between the humidity and the pollen, I don't think line drying would work for me. The longer that jeans or something take to dry, the greater the risk of them getting that stankfunk that you don't know is there until the middle of the day and you're far from home.
I do hangdry workout clothes/synthetics -- obviously there's no reason to put stuff like that in the dryer, button shirts, too. But I don't want to mess with hanging my sheets and blankets and towels, no.

OP -- Good on you! r122. Feels nice saving a buncha money, right?
R123 -- You are just looking for reasons not to line dry. I live one state over from Texas and we have the same climate. And you are missing out on life's simple pleasures when you eschew like drying your bed linens. As for towels, to each his own.
Here's a pro-tip: towels that have never seen the inside of a dryer don't have soap residues baked into the fibers cycle after cycle. They remain nearly as soft and fluffy as they day they were purchased.
