Forgive me if this is a completely ignorant question. I'm of course aware that there is a Russian-Ukranian conflict and it's serious, but I haven't been digging deep. Is there a chance that this gets considerably broader. Obviously Eastern Europe. But what about Western Europe or U.S.? Not in terms of invading those areas, but getting Western Europe and U.S. deep into some shit. Or are we already there?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 24, 2022 6:07 PM |
R18, most DLers who know nothing but what CNN says will say it could get broader, but actual learned experts like John Mearsheimer at U. Chicago say no, not in the near future. Once they connect the Northern and Southern advances, about 50-60000 Ukrainian troops will be trapped. However it appears Russians are doing much better job advancing in the South than in the North where they are facing some resistance. They are moving fast, already in Nikolaev and appears to have not much resistance waltzing in there.

Those Hungry boys will have real competition with their Ukrainian counterparts looking for porn and sex work in their new country. Not many John’s were visiting Ukrainian for dick, too risky. But bring Ukrainians to the prostitution centers and we may see going rates drop.

Tulsi and Tucker are so stupid. I am pretty sure it's the opposite - that if Ukraine had been a member of NATO, Putin likely wouldn't have did this because that means war with EVERYONE in NATO - 30 countries including the US, France, UK, Turkey, etc.
NATO seems like a great collective deterrence. Which is why an aggressor hated it so much. It was another bullshit excuse, just like his Nazi claims.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 25, 2022 12:57 AM |
NATO would never accept Ukraine precisely because it has the liability of having ongoing territorial disputes with Russia, which would inevitably force NATO into a confrontation it does not want. NATO just strung Ukraine along to get Russia to bite and when it did, NATO said bye... and the West could slap on sanctions! Ukraine was always meant to be just the sacrificial lamb.

R113 I agree and I also think Putin is hoping that Americans (and the rest of Europe) won't put up with sanctions that also hurt our own economies and continue to drive up inflation. I bet he's counting on the repubs taking back Congress this year too. Given how selfish some of our population has been during covid, it would not surprise me at all if they got angrier with Biden and other western leaders rather than support their attempts to thwart Russia
by Anonymous | reply 114 | February 25, 2022 8:27 AM |
The heavy anti-Biden push by the media with Afghanistan has primed a lot of people to blame Biden for anything that happens with Russia now. Even the online lefties who were constantly saying Trump would get us out of Afghanistan and be a hero for it turned against Biden when he actually DID get us out of Afghanistan. The media was relentless and it worked.
Unfortunately, people are far too selfish as you said, but also stupid and ridiculous, and they won't admit that trying to destabilize our own government at this time is the absolute last thing we need.
We are in such a precarious situation right now. Online propaganda is everywhere -- the night before the invasion I saw someone on DL pushing Russian propaganda about how Ukraine was run by Nazis and someone had to do something about it -- and the media only cares about money and too many Americans are too stupid to figure out what news is correct and what's fake. Many will just check out altogether because they can't keep anything straight.

There is a very good reason to post videos and photos of dead civilians - so we can see the horrors of war and not be so casual about sending our families off to fight. Back in the 60s, we saw it on TV every night, and public opinion changed.

Putin started believing his own hype about the Ukrainians, particularly the ones closer to Russia, wanted him to come in. He also believed that since Angela retired Europe had lost its strength and would crumble from infighting.
Neither of those things turned out to be true. If he doesn’t get done what he’s trying to do by this time next week, he’s lost.
Does he see the writing on the wall and back down or does he double down? Conventional wisdom says the latter is a fool’s errand but if he’s going to be the head of the world’s new pariah state then, why not? He certainly hasn’t been acting rationally lately.

Right now the messaging we're hearing overwhelmingly is very black-and-white, in that one side is clearly evil, and the other side is a peaceful, innocent, harmless nation that's a lovely emerging democracy; that one side started an invasion out of no where, totally unprovoked.
I think after things calm down, in a few years, we'll learn—and possibly some of us will even accept—that this wasn't quite the case.
That might sound offensive and traitorous right now, but I think we've been here before in recent history (told one thing by political leadership and media that we believe completely, later finding out things were a bit more complicated).
Just a thought.

I am just watching Russian TV and it's fascinating to compare how propaganda machines work on both sides. They are actually not hiding any Russian army losses but depict as a proof of Ukrainians being the killers and killing Russian peacekeepers. There is also an extensive footage of Ukrainian army surrendering and Russians treating them as heroes and accommodating them. They claim that Ukraine is positioning all their military in residential areas trying to incite Russians to hit civilians. Hence Ukrainian army are terrorists using civilians as hostages. And Russian army is doing their absolute best to avoid civilian casualties. In fact they are showing all social medial images and clips including the widely shared of tank mowing down civilian vehicle but with different commentary. Same content, different soundtrack.
The information war is fascinating to me. But I think West is winning this one, unlike the one on the ground.

R169 Most Russian people still have common sense. I do not believe that most of them will think that Putin was justified in invading Ukraine, especially the areas that aren't Russian-majority - this is a very different situation to Crimea. The tactics you talk of are all basically justifiable tactics to try to ward off someone who is attacking them. Also, Russian state media lied to them right up to the invasion, mocking the idea that it would happen. Russian people have low trust of their government compared to other countries (for good reason).

R171 This is bad, very bad for Russia in my opinion. When South Korea, Taiwan, USA, Germany, France, etc. are joining up to sanction you economically, Russia is going to just do worse and worse over the next few years. An occupancy of Ukraine will be very costly to achieve. Those Russian reserves may look great today but it won't take very many years to deplete. And they have ruined their international image even further.

The SPETSNAZ is now on the ground as seen in the already occupied cities. For those who don't know, those are Russian forces who are trained to deal with resistance. UN Security Council just voted on their Russia resolution with some interesting voting results.
BBC: The UN security council voted on a resolution deploring Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Eleven member states voted for the resolution, three abstained (China, India, and UAE) and one voted against (Russia). As Russia holds a veto the resolution was not upheld.
But the US and its allies will see it as a victory to have Russia voting alone, and China abstaining. They were able to bring China on board by softening the resolution slightly, changing the word ‘condemning’ to ‘deploring’ for example and removing a reference to the Russian president. It is a loss however not to persuade India or UAE off the fence.

Turkey says it cannot stop returning Russian warships from accessing Black Sea
by Anonymous | reply 235 | February 26, 2022 1:05 PM |
Seems likely that Turkey would want to shut down Russia's access to the sea, just a day or two ago Russia took out a Turkish ship off the coast of Odessa. No one was hurt thankfully but I'm sure Turkey wasn't pleased.
That said, a day ago they were saying it was logistically impossible for them to stop Russia from entering the Black Sea.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | February 26, 2022 1:22 PM |
I guess there's some confusion on whether Turkey has shut down the Black Sea access. Here's a tweet from Zelensky thanking Erdogan for shutting it down.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | February 26, 2022 2:21 PM |
r241 would a medical student from Nigeria even be a migrant? They aren't technically without a country and weren't permanent residents of Ukraine, just staying on a student VISA. I'm sure if they waive their Nigerian passport they can enter, but if they act like refugees (people looking to stay) they they will get rejected. Sort of makes sense to me.
A few Americans have crossed (though our passport has always had cache) without issue after waiving our passports in their face to show we are stopping through.

Please be careful trusting Ukrainian claims, most of it is exaggerated or twisted to keep gaining support from the West. No that I don't sympathies with them, but I would not use their claims as facts. It's propaganda by one of the sides in this conflict. Turkey never agreed to close the strait. Zelenskiy is lying. They simply can not do so and even if they do, it's all too late. The Black Sea is empty.
Also the widely shared claim of stand off on Snake Island by the Ukrainian government is not true. The Ukrainian border troops were not killed. and there was not bombing of the island. Most of them were captured by Russians.

Well that is some racist bullshit from Ukraine and Poland. In a time like this they really want to pick and choose which color of women should be deemed worth of a seat on a train? This is an extremely challenging military operation and it costs Russians more than Ukrainians. They clearly not minding paying this high price.

can you imagine how differently things could have turned out in Afghanistan if their fucking government hadn't just folded? Only their Vice President, a small military contingent and a couple of regional leaders wanted to fight. Their President fled immediately and following him most of the other government officials did too. The military stood down. Almost all regional Afghan leaders cut deals with the Taliban to hand over weapons in exchange for the Taliban not to fight them. Keep in mind the Taliban is just a ragtag group nowhere near the capability of the #2 military in the world, Russia. Maybe the Afghan population would have been more willing to fight if their government had had courage

Bloomberg:
"Russia still has overwhelming military advantage in Ukraine, but every day of resistance-forced delay is raising the cost and risk to Putin.
Russia’s plans for Ukraine face rapidly rising costs due to delays caused by tougher-than-expected resistance from forces on the ground, even as its military retains overwhelming advantages.
Russian official tells us the 1-2 week plan is on track, aimed not at taking cities but forcing Ukraine's President Zelensky to flee or surrender, replace with pro-Russia government, and destroy armed formations in the field.
Plan would then carve Ukraine in 3 pieces: Newly recognized Donetsk and Luhansk regions; rump Ukraine under Russian control; and western regions of Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv left alone.
Rump Ukraine would pay for own reconstruction, would have no military, would be incorporated into Russia's air defense network, and might host Russian troops.
Risk to Russia plan is that each day without defeat raises Ukrainian morale, attracts new reserves, forces ugly capture of cities by force and gives time for Ukraine's allies to send more weapons, creating further delay and cost for Russia."

This will only embolden the nationalist hawks that they were right all along and the West is not an ally. We can isolate them economically but does it make Europe safer?

“An increasing number of airlines are cancelling flights into and out of Russia, and numerous countries have closed their airspace to Russian airlines. US citizens should consider departing Russia immediately via commercial options still available,” the department said on Sunday.
Last month, the US warned Americans against traveling to Russia because of tension along the border with Ukraine as well as “the potential for harassment against US citizens, the embassy’s limited ability to assist US citizens in Russia” and “harassment by Russian government security officials”.

I found this article retweeted by Alexei Navalny and used Google to translate it, so though it may not be 100% accurate it's scary none the less. Don't get your hopes up about Putin seeing reason or someone stepping up to assassinate him, basically.
"Another of my interlocutors, let's call him a good acquaintance of Putin, says this: the Russian president has in his head that the rules of the game are destroyed and destroyed not by Russia, and if this is a fight without rules, then this is a fight without rules and a new reality in which we live. “And here he is in a state of offended and offended. This is paranoia to the point of absurdity,” he explains. According to him, Putin sincerely believes that, at least in the first years of his rule, he tried his best to improve relations with the West.
“A lot of things overlapped: on the one hand, a really unfair state of affairs, when we are constantly being spoiled from year to year on a different scale and declaring us enemies long before Ukraine, on the other hand, the inability of our competently to build and implement, including publicly, his policy, and thirdly, the deformation of Putin due to being in power for too long. And Putin now seriously believes that Shoigu and Gerasimov are telling him that they will quickly take Kyiv, that the Ukrainians are blowing themselves up, that Zelensky is on cocaine,” my interlocutor is sure."

I really hope that the negotiations go well. Just split it up between Ukrainians and Russian speakers (we'll make the former part rich and Western, an EU member if not a NATO member). Just hurry so the destruction stops.

What all these petty, superficial differences – from owning cars and clothes to having Netflix and Instagram accounts – add up to is not real human solidarity for an oppressed people. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s tribalism. These comments point to a pernicious racism that permeates today’s war coverage and seeps into its fabric like a stain that won’t go away. The implication is clear: war is a natural state for people of color, while white people naturally gravitate toward peace.
It’s not just me who found these clips disturbing. The US-based Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association was also deeply troubled by the coverage, recently issuing a statement on the matter: “Ameja condemns and categorically rejects orientalist and racist implications that any population or country is ‘uncivilized’ or bears economic factors that make it worthy of conflict,” reads the statement. “This type of commentary reflects the pervasive mentality in western journalism of normalizing tragedy in parts of the world such as the Middle East, Africa, south Asia, and Latin America.” Such coverage, the report correctly noted, “dehumanizes and renders their experience with war as somehow normal and expected”.
More troubling still is that this kind of slanted and racist media coverage extends beyond our screens and newspapers and easily bleeds and blends into our politics. Consider how Ukraine’s neighbors are now opening their doors to refugee flows, after demonizing and abusing refugees, especially Muslim and African refugees, for years. “Anyone fleeing from bombs, from Russian rifles, can count on the support of the Polish state,” the Polish interior minister, Mariusz Kaminski, recently stated. Meanwhile, multiple reports indicate that Polish border guards are actively and forcibly turning away African students who were studying in Ukraine, thereby preventing them from crossing into safety.

Western media are focused on Kiev, but ignoring the steady encirclement ("the cauldron" forming) of the vast bulk of Ukraine's troops, presently located in the east. Once they're completely encircled, the non-ideological troops will be given the option to leave after surrendering. Divisions like the Azov Battalion won't.
I think maybe Russia isn't going to go all-in on Kiev while there are discussions with the current central government. I think they're doing a slower squeeze of Kiev, to add urgency to the negotiations and of course enhance their leverage in them.
The next meeting is on the Polish border tomorrow.

CNN: Britain on Wednesday said it was “gravely concerned” by “reports of the use of cluster munitions” by Russia during its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier on Wednesday, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia was moving banned weaponry into Ukraine.
"We have seen videos of Russian forces moving exceptionally lethal weaponry into Ukraine, which has no place on the battlefield. That includes cluster munitions and vacuum bombs – which are banned under the Geneva Convention," she said.

She's going to be a celeb.
A Ukrainian woman trapped in her Kyiv home says she's fighting a "war within a war," because she's transgender and worries transphobic Ukrainians -- who are now armed -- might get her before the Russians.
Zi Faámelu says "it was hell" living as a trans person in the capital of Ukraine, even before the Russian invasion, but now she's unable to flee out of fear leaving her apartment will be more dangerous for her.
While all her friends and neighbors have been able to evacuate the city, she told CBS News, "I don't want to go outside. I am literally scared for my life."
Zi says the country isn't accepting of LGBTQ folks, and she's painfully aware that many of the men who've stayed behind as volunteer soldiers have guns. So, in a twisted way, she thinks staying trapped in her home -- as bombs and missiles explode around her -- feels like the better option.
Even if she makes it to the border, Zi says she'll be blocked from leaving because "If you have male gender on your passport [as a woman] they will not let you abroad... they will not let you through."
Her most immediate crisis is a dwindling reserve of food as the Russian assault on Kyiv intensifies ... and it all leaves Zi feeling trapped on all fronts.

Ukrainian Sex Workers Are Rallying to Help Those Stranded in the Conflict Zone
They're concerned that donations aren't reaching them quickly enough.
Sex workers around the world, and many of the platforms they use, have spent the last week rallying support for their colleagues stranded on the ground in Ukraine. Platforms from across the industry have poured millions into humanitarian aid, and committed to coordinating evacuation efforts. Others have undertaken major fundraising efforts on Twitter.
Now, workers on the ground want help defending their homes.
Among them is Kara Xaen, a 26-year-old Ukrainian sex worker who recently returned home from Germany to be with her family in Ukraine’s south-east. Her grandmother is “tremendously” sick, she told VICE, and her father isn’t able to leave the region. “We’ve decided to stay here, together,” she said.
Xaen said support from across the industry has been overwhelming, but she encouraged those looking to get involved to make donations directly to workers like her, still in Ukraine, or the grassroots organisations supporting them. Even just the Ukrainian military – but definitely “not UNICEF”.
“There is a big [on-the-ground] effort here, because our city hasn’t been invaded yet, to help people around us get medicines, supplies, batteries, all these kinds of things, while we can still help,” Xaen said.
“Some of my friends from university [in Germany] have said, ‘Hey we’ve donated to this organisation like UNICEF’, or whatever. But, it’s like: you’ve donated to an organisation with thousands of people. When will we actually see this money?”
For Xaen, the money would be better donated to those on the ground. That way, it is sure to go directly to those involved in ferrying supplies to civilian battalions, taking up arms to defend their cities. It’s an instinct that comes more naturally to her colleagues around the world, who have developed a strong track record in recent years of mobilising for victims of disasters and ensuring they see the money that has been raised for them.
Over the last week, even the platforms Ukrainian sex workers depend on to make a living have made serious efforts to make their support known. OnlyFans made a donation of 500 Ethereum, equivalent to about $US1.5 million, to UkraineDAO on Saturday, one of a legion of crypto organisations raising millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and military funding for Ukraine.
Another was Paxum, a payment app that allows cammers, streamers, and all sorts of creators to withdraw their pay from platforms like Twitch and MyFreeCams, from pretty much any region, without friction. Sometimes it’s used to bypass what can often be a rigmarole of cross-country fiscal regulation, so users from countries like Australia and New Zealand can get paid quickly.
Over the weekend, Paxum sent out an email to all of its users, declaring the platform “Stands With Ukraine!”, and promised help to all members of the “Adult Videochat Community in Ukraine”, including performers “who do not use Paxum as a payment method.”
Octav Moise, Paxum’s CEO, told VICE that the company is currently working with sex workers across the country who might not have the financial means or access to transport needed to evacuate. Their plan was to connect workers with transport at Ukraine’s border with Romania, where they would then be offered free accommodation. He said that, so far, the effort has helped more than 150 people, but “those numbers increase every hour”. The company is currently working to evacuate more than 1,000 others.

I'm not a fan of that, R539. Not at all. Help them yes, but help them build their country back up instead of just coming here. I'd be fine with some of them coming here temporarily, but not unlimited numbers immigrating here permanently.
Trudeau isn't doing this for political gain as Ukrainians here in Canada are notoriously conservative. The prairies are filled with racist and homophobic small towns with Ukrainian heritage. Hell, lots of them were part of that stupid convoy to Ottawa.
I can't believe the official opposition wants Ukrainians allowed in without visas. Why they want to risk importing potential bad actors is beyond me.
