She had worked in tv in nyc and she was looking for work in LA. She heard from Barris’s friends that these two comedy writers, Jim Brooks and Allan Burns, were developing a tv show and needed a secretary. Secretary? Ok fine she thought, and interviewed with them.

Brooks and Burns met her and immediately knew she was worth her weight in gold.

Why? She was exactly what they wanted one of their main players to be, a certified New Yawk girl. They hired her because they needed a secretary, but even more so to be an unofficial voice and “attitude” coach for Valerie Harper, who knew nothing of working class outer borough girls. (Well she knew a little, but still needed lots of coaching.)

Nardo really helped Harper rise to the occasion, and over the years of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” moved up in the production of the show to become a writer — and one of the head writers on “Rhoda” as well. She was nominated for an Emmy as well.

And all because Chuck Barris was lonely in late 60s LA.
