Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees, dead at 57

His solo album The Winding Sheet was the soundtrack to my twenties. Give it a listen, it is brilliant.

A headbanger?

by Anonymousreply 1February 22, 2022 10:05 PM

I loved "I Nearly Lost You"

by Anonymousreply 2February 22, 2022 10:06 PM

Mark Lanegan had a very impressive career. I know he had addiction issues but I believe he's been clean for a relatively long time.

RIP Mark.

Who?

by Anonymousreply 4February 22, 2022 10:10 PM

He was in the hospital with Covid in 2021 for months. Here is an article he wrote about it. I wonder if it was issues related to that?

The lead singer of a group called "Procul Harem" is also dead.

Shit, nobody will believe me but for no reason Nearly Lost You popped into my head today.

by Anonymousreply 8February 22, 2022 10:23 PM

That Guardian article is a devastating read on what he went through with COVID. Sounds like his organs and lungs became severely compromised as a result.

by Anonymousreply 9February 22, 2022 10:57 PM

He was one of Kurt's best friends.

All of my high school rock heroes are dead: Kurt, Mark, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Elliott Smith.

I'm not even that old. Oh well.

Ugh, that article sounded horrific. Poor guy.

by Anonymousreply 10February 22, 2022 11:20 PM

This seriously bums me out. Yes, they're all gone ;(

by Anonymousreply 11February 22, 2022 11:22 PM

He sounds like the buttchild of Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain.

by Anonymousreply 12February 22, 2022 11:24 PM

Layne Staley had the best voice.

by Anonymousreply 13February 22, 2022 11:34 PM

R10, don't forget Scott Weiland.

When grunge music was on top of the charts, it was fashionable to act depressed. But for some of them, it wasn't an act. A few died in their prime. Some were able to keep going for a decade or two (or three) before suffering the same fate. It's almost like they had some kind of survivor's guilt.

by Anonymousreply 14February 22, 2022 11:39 PM

Smith was molested by his stepfather I think.

by Anonymousreply 15February 22, 2022 11:47 PM

Almost all of the singers of the big grunge bands have died before even out of their 50s. Eddie Vedder is the still around. I’m not a huge fan of the genre, so I can’t think of any others.

by Anonymousreply 16February 23, 2022 12:17 AM

R14, I hated STP, but Weiland for sure counts. Bradley from Sublime and Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon also should be added.

Eddie Vedder, Billy Corgan, Thom Yorke, and the Chili Peppers are sort of the last early 90s megastars standing. Though, I'm sure I'm missing a ton of course.

R15, Elliott doesn't really belong with the grunge guys, but I included him because I just love his music to this day. And yeah, I think I read about that. Poor guy.

by Anonymousreply 17February 23, 2022 12:24 AM

Imagine being the artist behind “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” reduced to “a group called ‘Procul Harem.’”

by Anonymousreply 18February 23, 2022 12:31 AM

The grandfather of grunge, Neil Young, is still going.

Lots of the women involved in 90s grunge are still around too - Kathleen Hanna, Liz Phair, Shirley Manson, Courtney, etc.

by Anonymousreply 19February 23, 2022 12:35 AM

Grunge = depression = ill-health = early death.

by Anonymousreply 20February 23, 2022 12:43 AM

Oh for sure R19. LIz Phair's Exile in Guyville ranks better than just about any male driven grunge record in my eyes. Flawless album. And how Courtney outlived anyone is a shocker.

But I was just focusing on the men, since they're the ones who all died.

by Anonymousreply 21February 23, 2022 12:48 AM

Eddie Vedder, you in danger gurl!

He's not dead OP until he is...

DEAD to ME

by Anonymousreply 23February 23, 2022 1:11 AM

Sam Henry of The Wipers, another classic NW band, died on Sunday of very fast stomach cancer.

by Anonymousreply 24February 23, 2022 1:15 AM

All the pictures I saw of this skinny headbanger was him dragging on a fag.

by Anonymousreply 25February 23, 2022 1:23 AM

Was he an anti-vaxer? I saw that he had really been ravaged by covid but also that he was talking some 5G nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 26February 23, 2022 2:29 AM

Damn. I am from the Pacific Northwest and his name is well-known around here (not as well as someone like, say, Kurt Cobain—but still well-known). After the rise and fall of grunge, he did a lot of interesting work with artists in the UK. His albums with Isobel Campbell (of Belle & Sebastian) are wonderful. It seems like such an odd pairing on the surface: a gruff grunger from Washington state, and a female cellist/singer from a British twee pop band—but somehow, the combination is spellbinding.

Oh, no, gone too soon gravel-voiced King.

Am a bit young to have enjoyed him before he got old and crabby (I was a baby during grunge), but even still Screaming Trees records got me through some tough times in school. During the worst of my highschool teen depression-Era, I would blast the song 'Crawlspace' so often that my family & friends got sick of it.

was a cause of death ever revealed? thx in advance

by Anonymousreply 29March 29, 2023 1:01 PM

It was a combination of health issues, but COVID illness seriously degraded his well-being. Primarily though it was heart problems, kidney disease and ichesmia.

by Anonymousreply 30March 29, 2023 1:52 PM

^ thanks

by Anonymousreply 31March 29, 2023 3:43 PM

I've heard it was suicide, R30. But I guess that's what happened. RIP Dark Mark.

by Anonymousreply 32December 21, 2023 5:40 AM

I missed hearing about this…what a bummer. I didn’t keep up with his music, but I was definitely a fan in the 90s.

Don’t do grunge, kids.

by Anonymousreply 33December 21, 2023 5:51 AM

All the grunge gods are dying. Sheesh.

We have Eddie Vedder. Is Mark Arm still alive?
