Just Watched "Tick...Tick...BOOM!" and Was Tick...Tick...BORED!

I don't get the love for this movie, nor the love for Jonathan Larson, whose music and lyrics always seemed bland to me.

Andrew Garfield gave a great performance, and it's always great seeing Judith Light hamming it up, but the rest of the supporting cast was pretty bad and the overall story was one we've seen a thousand times - tormented artists living in poverty torments himself and those around him until he makes it big.

Anybody else like this one?

It's on my 'to-watch' list but I keep putting off for other films.

Now after your comments OP, I think I'll keep it at the bottom of my 'to-watch' list in the event of another pandemic total lock-down.

I watched it in pieces. Didn’t hold my interest enough to watch in one sitting.

Tryna see all the lead performances this year before the AAs. Thought Garfield was great but he’s no match for Cumberbatch or Denzel.

Denzell? Hahahahahahahahahahahahah

R2 I was impressed by Garfield's singing voice. Overall, though, the movie irritated me. Same ol', same ol' "kids trying to make it in the big city" plot.

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2022 2:31 PM

What’s your damage, cunt at R3?

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2022 2:33 PM

J didn’t expect to like TTB any more than I did, so I wasn’t disappointed. However, I fell absolutely in love with Andrew Garfield, whom I’d always liked, but whose performance in this was truly something special.

I’m going to watch the Oscars for the first time in a long time, hoping he’s going to win.

I saw most of the other contenders, and Andrew is the only actor I can see winning.

R6 Garfield could be a dark horse, but I still think Cumberbatch will win.

by Anonymousreply 7February 20, 2022 2:49 PM

I hope not, r7. I couldn’t wait for TPOTD to end. And Cumberbatch has never been an actor I’ve cared about, one way or the other.

R8 I've never been crazy about Cumberbatch either, but I thought he was excellent in Dog.

Garfield was terrific in Tick Tick Boom, but at times, I felt like I was watching a high school musical performance.

I have no great admiration for the work of Jonathan Larson. I saw the original cast of “Rent,” and found it a manipulative bore. Trumpeted as diverse, yet all the gay characters were POC. (God forbid, the two white leads be seemed anything but straight!) Unmemorable music.

I liked Garfield in the National production of “Angels,” though he couldn’t top memories of the original Steven Spinella, who was magnificent.

And I hope Cumberbatch wins for his nuanced, multileveled performance.

R10 Whenever I tell people I didn't like "Rent," I get the big gay gasp and pearl clutching. To me, the songs were silly and the story was so cliche.

It's sad that Jonathan Larson died so tragically, but I didn't think he was all that stupendous. I'm surprised Stephen Sondheim liked him so much.

Jonathon Larson was a minor talent whose sole accomplishment, Rent, is a mediocre rip-off that doesn't even have the courage to let Mimi die. The music is trite and repetitious, and had he not died, I doubt the show would have been the hit that it was.

Andrew Garfield will be on Graham Norton's show next week because he's STILL promoting this film, or just campaigning for the Oscar at this point.
