Stomped to death in a public toilet in Sasebo, Nagasaki Japan in 1992 by a POS fellow shipmate. The Navy tried to cover up his murder. Anyone know the story?
Allen Shindler Navy Man Murdered For Being Gay

Story in the link. The pathologist was shocked by the damage that was done to the victims body. He said it was worse than a horse trampling.

The story of Allen's murder made me cry when I read it, filled me with rage too that such an ugly piece of shit could take his life.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 18, 2022 7:07 PM |
Such a beautiful man, a friend of his said he was a nice caring guy.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 18, 2022 7:23 PM |
His mother said she wanted to stomp his killer to death like he had done to her son. I wish she had.

The Captain should have been prosecuted as well.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 18, 2022 7:51 PM |
Did he have sex with one of the killers? In denial guys can go off like that because they hate themselves so much.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 18, 2022 8:10 PM |
No, he didn't. The killer claimed he came onto him in the toilet using the "gay panic" defense then changed his story.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 18, 2022 8:59 PM |
This is horrifying!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 18, 2022 9:27 PM |
There is a direct link with how people in power talk about gays and how gays are treated.
When DeSantis supports a bill to not teach that there is something called gay in grade schools, it lowers the value of gay lives.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 18, 2022 9:39 PM |
The other gay guy who allen had a crush on knew most of the shipmates were scumbags and dangerous but when Allen came to him for help he forced him to go back there, why would you do that? He didn't try at least to get him out of that place. They were torturing him for months.

This case really wrecked me, it's been haunting me for the last several days. I can't stop thinking about Allen and all the pain and suffering he went through. I just can't get past it.
I thought this thread would have gain some traction but I guess not, why isn't this case more recognised than the Barry Winchell murder? Barry wasn't even a gay man, but was murdered for dating a transsexual. His case is often brought up in reference to "Don't Ask Don't Tell" but not Allen Schindler's? I think Allen deserves more recognition. This case was horrific and he was a gay man.

Too bad it was on a ship and not on a base where he might have been able to go AWOL.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 19, 2022 8:58 PM |
Sorry, I misspelled his name, it's Allen Schindler not Shindler.

There was a TV movie based on the case and his mother's fight for justice called "Any Mother's Son." It was on Lifetime.

OP, thanks for starting this thread, I was in elementary school then. Never knew about this case. It's awful, tragic. I guess I should be pleasantly surprised that his killer got life in prison. I would have expected he would have gotten away with a couple of years in prison.
I know trigger warnings get laughed about on Datalounge, but, seriously, be careful before reading the Wikipedia page where Allen S's death is described in detail. It's horrifying.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 19, 2022 10:37 PM |
under the circumstances r17, that's not funny. There's just some things you don't make jokes about.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 19, 2022 10:39 PM |
There's very little online about Allen's mother. Is she still living?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 19, 2022 10:42 PM |
The Navy would have to admit there were gay people in the service if the story was made public. They couldn't have that, could they?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 19, 2022 10:44 PM |
There are some online screencaps of his murderer's (Terry M. Helvey) Facebook page. Was at one time deluded into thinking he had a chance at parole. I hope the POS spends every last waking moment behind bars. Sorry, once you stomp another human being to death, there are no second chances.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 19, 2022 11:11 PM |
The other guy that participated in the murder only served 98 days in jail…
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 19, 2022 11:14 PM |
R22, I saw a pic of him, he looks like a disgusting pig with butthole eyes. He's got the face that he deserves. He must be 50 something by now. I hope he dies in prison.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 19, 2022 11:22 PM |
R23, I just hope karma found that scumbag.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 19, 2022 11:27 PM |
R20, I couldn't find anything about her either. I hope she is still living, it was her petition that prevented that POS from getting parole.

I'm thinking about making a video on Allen, I'm not good at youtube but there's next to nothing about him, and the very few videos that are available aren't very good.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 20, 2022 1:23 PM |
A docu- video would be great!
First focus on making a good video. Uploading it to YouTube is the simple part

Sorry to say but the piece of shit who did this to Allen Schindler is being recommended for parole. He might well be released by the end of this year. Allen's mother and sister are still alive. They really should have pursued the death penalty when they had the chance. The literal shit eating pile of human garbage should have never have gotten a chance at living a comfortable life in prison. Now he's going to be released. This is infuriating.

An gay uncle of my father was beaten nearly to death by marines in NC. He was in the hospital for weeks and then released. He went home and shot himself dead. The town newspaper published a story after he died saying he invited a marine home with him.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 11, 2022 2:38 AM |
The irony of course is that we had 2 bases in Jax Fl and every gay man knew if you wanted some young sailor dick all you had to do was cruise Beach Blvd or Roosevelt Blvd and 9 times out of 10 you'd get lucky. I cant tell you how many times I did. It was like shooting fish in a barrel.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 11, 2022 2:57 AM |
An episode of The Deadliest Decade on the ID channel called Don't Ask Don't Tell covered Allen's story. That was the first time I learned about him.

This case is so deeply disturbing and one of the worst I've ever heard, can't believe there's barely any mention of it for such an important case for LGB. The Wikipedia article on it is grossly lacking and out of date, I mean they've got longer articles on Dlist stars. I only found out one of the killers was hiding his own homosexuality, and the one serving a life sentence was almost paroled this year. There needs to be a new movie or series on this case.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 27, 2022 4:50 PM |
What a horrific crime and there should be no parole. Anybody who could stomp an animal much less a person to death is dangerous and evil and should remain in prison till they die. This is heartbreaking.

What a handsome young man with a kind face. This is going to haunt me.

Schindler was described as looking "all American," 180 pounds, built with blond hair and beautiful blue eyes. I seriously don't know how anyone could look at this man and do the things that were done to him.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 27, 2022 5:09 PM |
R47, Are you stupid? The killers were harassing him for months and stalked and followed him in a public restroom.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 27, 2022 5:11 PM |
R49, more like, he followed them to the resroom and tried things
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 27, 2022 5:12 PM |

I saw his mother speak at the March on Washington in 1993. She was on the main stage at the mall, and spoke very eloquently and was supportive of everybody who was there. I don't think there was a dry eye amongst anybody around me or the hundreds of thousands of people there.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 27, 2022 5:20 PM |
I'm glad that post is rotting in prison till he dies but it doesn't equal the horror this man faced.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 27, 2022 5:25 PM |
The killer is around 50 years old now, his next parole hearing is in 2024. It's sad that Schindler's family still have to keep going through this, they should've opted for the death penalty when they had the chance.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 27, 2022 5:32 PM |
Murderer is in a federal prison , so pretty Cush compared to state . He should never be released . Let him stay locked up . Fed prisons are country clubs
