The last three Procter & Gamble soaps.
Another World should have called it off when Vicky was being walled up in the Cory cellar.
As the World Turns should have turned off after Lisa sued John, sparing us the torture that was Carly Tenney (to say nothing of the horrible gay storyline).
Guiding Light should never have gone to Peapack-Gladstone.

Agree with R35, The Simpsons wins gold. Part of me is still strangely glad it’s there but I wouldn’t watch it and haven’t for 2 decades. If they actually let the characters age and the storylines change I might be interested, but I recently watched a couple more recent episodes and it is a pale shadow of its old self.
I also think Frasier was around a couple seasons too long, although the final season did perk up a bit. Things really went south when Niles and Daphne got together and became a dismal sitcom couple (with Daphne’s basic personality changing).

I thought the lottery season of Roseanne was extremely watchable as a complete train wreck. The show wore out its welcome in season 8, and then decided to shred the welcome mat and eat it in season 9. The terrorists-on-a-train episode should be listed as one of the worst episodes of anything, ever, but it's still fascinating to watch in a car-crash sort of way.

"The Affair". First two seasons were great and then, once the original showrunner(s) left, it quickly lost its plot.
"Dexter" (that one was discussed ad nauseam)
"Billions". Still running but ran out of steam around S3 or S4, though I have to say that with Corey Stall becoming one of the two main characters this season, I'm warming up to it again.
"Homeland". It kind of dragged on after the first three seasons.
I'm not even going to touch network shows since, generally, hardly any of them are prestige TV even when they are brand new.

Bewitched had definitely run its course after eight seasons (they were repeating story lines left and right) but I was watching an episode today from the final season and thinking that, had it run just one more year, it would've been interesting to see Tabitha and Adam grow more into their powers (which, of course, would've caused all kinds of headaches for Samantha and "what's-his-name").

Seinfeld "jumped the shark" the season George's parents took over. But the next season it recovered, and then, in the finale, it so enthusiastically jumped the shark it had sort of a retroactive effect
At the other end of the spectrum, "Roseanne"s last season of its original run seemed to be all about being crappy. It was like an old person who had once been vital turning into someone you'd just want them to turn the ventilator off on.
That sort of diverted from the fact that the show started sucking a couple years earlier, specifically in the "Drunk Bev" episode. I'm thinking that, oddly enough, it was after Tom Arnold left the building.

One of the reasons there is so much hate for The Simpsons is that it has been a liberal leaning show, despite being the only show on television where the family regularly goes to church. As we know, Datalounge is infected with right wing assholes. No wonder they go after outspoken liberals like Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum. Not that they don't deserve criticism, but the seething vitriol implies conservative fuckery. Funny, their favorite target is "liberal Hollywood" when their heroes are shitty actor Ronald Reagan and reality show whore fucker/kid fucker/rapist Donald Trump, who have long overstayed their welcome.

"All In The Family." It should have ended when Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers left the show. But it kept limping along, adding a Jewish girl child (a jump the shark moment if there ever was one, adding a child character to a show) that somehow gets dumped into the laps of Archie and Edith Bunker. Then Jean Stapleton left the show but the network wanted to keep producing it so they killed off Edith and revamped the show into "Archie Bunker's Place." The show was shit long before it finally ended.

I loved Kate and Allie but once Allie got married and they moved to the high rise, it was done.

Hotel. Should have ended when Anne Baxter died. Who inherited the St. Gregory? Peter?

My thing with the Simpsons is I'm genuinely surprised they have enough of an audience still to justify all those salaries

“Dynasty”.

R156 R157 True but the quality never seemed to dip, the later shows where they are married are just as good as the ones when they are kids. Neither, were masterpieces but the entire run was entertaining. And Ricky Nelson was one of the most beautiful men to ever appear on tv or behind a microphone.
R154 I think it is the opposite. While The Simpsons has always been left leaning, the left has changed. The Simpsons is still a fairly old school liberal show in a world of wokeism. This makes left leaning audiences now view the Simpsons as archaic. While many on the right who used to hate them now find them to be one of the more wholesome shows on tv.

Dallas for sure. The last few seasons where JR married that Arkansas hillbilly and he had the Sasha Mitchell lovechild were awful. But it had been limping along for several years prior to that.

R165 I actually find the hillbilly tramp to be the best thing about those final seasons.

When Jerry Mathers' voice changed, "LITB" jumped the shark.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | February 19, 2022 12:18 AM |
R167, Jerry Mathers aging from the cutest TV kid ever to gawky adolescent was not pleasant, but the show was lucky, because as Mather's charms faded, the show wisely changed it's focus to hunky Wally and his very funny friends (Eddie, Lumpy). Not like the awful Dennis the Menace, which had nowhere to turn.
Definitely agree about Bewitched. Wonderful during the first five years, the show became unwatchable in its last few years. The horrible recasts (Dick Sargent, Sandra Gould), the replacement of beloved characters like Aunt Clara with annoying hams like Maurice, recycled storylines, no chemistry between the two leads.....so many reasons.
And another agreement about Are You Being Served. Textbook examples of how not to replace key cast members (Mr. Lucas, Mr. Grainger), why you should never overdo the screen time of cast members that DO work (Mr. Humphries), and why you shouldn't make the plots totally ridiculous.

Didn't watch a lot of NCIS after Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly left the show. I just didn't care about the replacements. I still watched a while for Mark Harmon, but the show got boring to me. Then I just stopped watching it altogether

Leave It To Beaver was at least the first sitcom that gave us an actual ending. It ended as Beaver was going to high school and Wally to college, I honestly think that was the natural place to end it.

As much as I love it, I think “The Handmaids Tale” needs to hang it up because now it basically defies logic. I mean, how is Scientology bitch still alive In Gilead? Other people look at someone funny and get executed- she starts a coup and is fine.

R174 I had to read the book for a class in college, I never understood how they were going to take that story and make it into a continuing series that made any sense. A Mini-series, yes, but not a long running show.

The X-Files. Should have ended much sooner than it did. What was the big deal about David Duchovny anyway? He was considered this hot sex symbol, but he has quite an ugly face. And is supposedly a full of himself asshole, too.

Seinfeld after Larry David left.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | February 20, 2022 12:08 PM |
R198 , isn't it amazing how recasting can kill a show? MASH was a mixed bag. Harry Morgan wasn't a bad replacement. David Ogden Steirs wasn't as funny as Larry Linville, but I think they wanted to give Hawkeye a more formidable adversary. Mike Farrell was the worst. Never made me laugh once during his whole run on the show.
