I can see myself getting into this!
Anthony Anderson is great in everything he is in. He is pretty consistent and is very underrated as an actor.
Jeffrey Donovan seems kinda basic. I don't know him. He's probably ok.
Camryn Manheim will be great. I love the no nonsense persona she brings to her characters. I'm glad to see her back on tv.
Hugh Dancy is the mandatory eye candy. He is KEY- YUTE!!!!!
Odelya Halevi is unknown to me but she's pretty!
Sam Waterston is the Law and Order G.O.A.T. Seeing him is what makes this reboot worthwhile. To be 81 and still working is amazing! Kudos to Sam!

Strong cast.
Terrible script. Poor dialogue and a boring plot. Especially for the debut. They should have pushed it back.
The cast is good except for Anthony Anderson. Does anyone in the L&O fanbase love his character? Was there some sort of demand for him to be brought back?
Camryn Manheim may be the bulldyke commanding officer the L&O franchise has been waiting for. (Sorry, Mariska.)

Oof—just watched the first episode, and hated nearly everything about it. Bad script, bad casting, and even the sets are shit now: classic L&O had a drab municipal feel to the police squad room & ADA offices. Even the new courtroom set feels phony and theatrical.
This “restart” has all the feel and tone of SVU featuring Officer Frowny Face & Friends, aka a steaming pile of shit.
Guess it’s back to watching reruns on WeTV.

R28, Jerry Orbach was NOT part of the original cast. Yes, Chris Noth was, but his character Mike Logan had TWO partners before Lennie Briscoe arrived. In season one actor George Dzunda as Max Greevey (killed after one season). The Paul Sorvino was brought in as Phil Cerreta. He lasted two, maybe two and a half seasons. Character was shot in a gun buy... did not return to being a detective, took a desk job (made the wife very happy).
The Lennie arrived.

The squad room set did look really chintzy, like a college play set in a police station.
Surprising, because SVU's main set has become increasingly luxe, and even the Organized Crime homebase has a flair to it.
Overall it's like NBC was very "meh, whatever" about this revival and didn't spare a thought beyond casting.
Very curious decision.

That wasn't Jill Hennessy. Claire Kincaid was in a bad car accident that left her brain dead (she died off screen many episodes later).
The one in the trunk was Alexandra Borgia - Annie Parisse - who was really good and I have no idea why they killed her off as soon as they did.

Annie "the one in the trunk" Parisse was my second-favorite ADA in the L&O universe. (Stephanie March on SVU being #1.)
She could actually act and really brought it in her scenes.
So they killed her off and replaced her with a succession of no-talents.

She felt working on Law & Order was just phoning in lines and reciting legal jargon, and that isn't real acting. She asked to be released from her contract, and said she didn't mind being killed off as at least she would be able to do some sort of acting in her last episode.

I am counting on the hope that it takes several episodes for the cast to gel. The new detective: “I speak my mind.” But he’s okay with body cams. Ugh. Cathryn Mannheim wasn’t convincing, which surprised me. It’s like she was just sitting at the table during the read-thru. Hugh Dancy, he was okay but the female lawyer, shades of “Hang ‘em all’ Angie Harmon.
The writing: omg, it wasn’t the defense attorney asking for the confession to be thrown out? That’s L&O 101. The ADA volunteered to exclude it? JFC. The victim’s wife: “I never turn on the security cameras even though my husband is the most hated man in America. I’m from a small town and we don’t hold with newfangled gadgets” and the cops didn’t roll their eyes hearing that?
And what was the final scenario, defendant shoots victim in self defense? That was still a viable theory right? The prosecution didn’t disprove it.
I was underwhelmed but I live in hope.

Camryn Mannheim is taking the place of one of the most popular actors/characters ever in L&O history. They gave her absolutely nothing to do and she didn’t bring anything of her own to the part. That was a fail.

I don't buy this about Annie Parisse. The show was in its 11th season when she joined—she knew what it was about.
She took over from the awful Elisabeth Rohm, who made me stop watching. I started again when I saw the good reviews for Annie. And she was really good!
The real reason is that the ratings slipped and NBC pressured Dick Wolf to put some eye candy back in that slot, so Parisse was dropped and they put that blank de la Garza robot in, along with some cheap tail on the detective side who didn't last. That's when they lost me as a viewer for good.

Not only does Carey Lowell look like hot garbage after what appears to be way too much plastic surgery + Botox, but the writers for this shit couldn’t even be bothered to remember that Jamie Ross made multiple appearances as a judge in L&O: Trial By Jury. Who the fuck gets elected to the New York Supreme Court (term: 14 years) and then goes back to being a fucking ADA? This shit is so lazy and preposterous, a pox on the legacy of the original L&O.

Not according to Annie Parisse, she asked to be released from her contract - she wanted OUT
Here is what she told NewsDay
I'd asked to leave the show. And they'd wanted to do an episode where one of the main characters gets murdered. A producer said, "We may end up doing that. Umm . . . don't take it the wrong way." It was a total blast. On "Law & Order," the big emotional scenes always go to guest stars, because the stories are really about them. It was suddenly like I was the guest star and things were happening to me.
Newsday - It seemed they were taking revenge on you for leaving.
People always tell me, "That was terrible what they did to you." I try to comfort them by telling them I had a really good time doing it.
Newsday - Why'd you want to leave a steady gig?
I became an actor because I wanted to join the circus . . . basically. I like the adventure of going from job to job to job. Not knowing what's next. That's just my crazy personality. [She laughs.] That said, with a kid, maybe I'll change my tune. Not yet, though . . . not yet.

R72 she's not the biggest problem with the reboot. The problem is that new female ADA -- lifeless -- and more importantly the general atmosphere on the show.
I understand the show is going to be updated -- it's been over 10 years since the original ended -- but as others mentioned something seems "off" with the sets and the lack of tension, and the music.
I'm going to continue to watch in the hope that it improves. First episodes of a new show are rarely the best ones.

The thing that disappoints me is the lack of an Asian actor as one of the show regulars
Over the past 20 years they have had every ethnic group and visible minority represented on the show as one of the series regulars - except a person of Asian descent
It would have been refreshing to have the Lieutenant or the female DA be a female Asian.

I agree R75. Replace Mannheim with an Asian male. Although L&O has comic relief moments, its not a comedy like The Practice, and Mannheim is a distraction.

Boring, predictable premiere. Mannhein and Donovan were uniformly awful, totally miscast, and poor Sam Waterston was just phoning it in. It would've been nice if they had given him a scene with the unrecognizable Carey Lowell, besides that quick glance they gave each other when she exited the courtroom.. The only bright spot for me was Dancy. I think he has potential. I usually love Norm Lewis, and it's a shame they killed his character off before the intro credits.

I liked it overall, but there were a few things that bothered me. The original show always had a gritty look and feel to it, and that seems to be gone, they've made it more glossy like SVU. I also agree with r67 about Jamie Ross being a Supreme Court judge in multiple episodes of LO: Trial by Jury, it is a bad look to not follow the past stories, and like many others have said, Carey Lowell is very unrecognizable, for such a beautiful woman on the original run, it looks like she's had some bad plastic surgery.

R110 that was the point I was trying to make about "The Practice" and it's cast. Yes that show did have some good episodes but it was a comedy and at the same time somehow a depressing downer. This was hot garbage. Ok, so for starters they didn't have a typical L & O opener with NYCers bickering then finding a dead body. That always gave the show a NYC feel, this could've taken place in any US city. Then there was too much forced drama between the liberal and conservative characters. And overall it was just bad writing and most of them seemed bored. The only halfway decent acting was by the ADA chick that looks like AOC (and they're all good actors at other times).
I'm giving this one more episode and if it's as bad as this, I'm done.
I would, however, like to see a cameo by Janine Garafalo where she charges into the squadroom smoking a quick burning cigarette and barks to Camryn Manheim: "Fuck off Toby!"

I'd believe it, R122.
Remember they made Diane Neal go blonde, even though it didn't look natural with her coloring at all. But they wanted her to look like Stephanie March.
Maybe that's what made her go nuts—all that bleach seeped into her brain.
By the way, has anyone checked on Diane recently? Is she OK? Or is she trying to dig her way out of a trailer that's piled ceiling-high with QVC boxes and cat skeletons?

Carey Lowell looks like an older version of herself in that picture at r123. But she did not look like that on the show.
Diane Neal had auburn hair for her initial run on SVU. She didn’t go blonde until they brought her back for a few episodes about the same time they brought Stephanie March back.
Poor Diane looks like she’s been doing a lot of comfort eating. (Pic is three years old. Maybe she’s lost it?)

Ugh. This Thursday's episode wasn't any better than last week's. And I've decided it's not Camryn causing the problem -- she's not even on onscreen enough to do that. It's just -- everything is wrong with this.

I've only seen the first episode, and it's ok, but a lot of you are way off.
1. Anthony Anderson is the only one who seems to have any life in him. The lawyers, especially, are bland robots.
2. I loved S. Epatha. But then, I'm a sucker for a black woman who's Had It Up To Here With Your Nonsense.
3. They should maybe the white cop even crazier. They're soft-pedaling his MAGA tendencies and they should just come out with it. Basically all white cops that are (at least in NYC) are like that.
4. I think a lot of you are letting your memory of Law and Order be misty and unclear. If you watch any of the episodes from the Glory Days, they're sort of bad.

Everyone saw the Glory Days episodes when standards for Good TV were different. Today, they seem dated and cheap and formulaic. Or can.

R135 I still watch some of those "glory days" episodes on peacock and I find they hold up. It isn't nostalgia. The plots were better and the characters were more compelling.
Of course the show ran for 20 years though. If you watch the eps from '90, '91 of course some of them will seem dated.

That said, she still looked kind of weird and simian in the premiere episode. I barely recognized her--maybe after some time her botox/peels/surgery will settle. I feel bad for these women with odd plastic.

R151 not all 20 seasons are available on Amazon. I think even Peacock doesn't have them all available. Some of the seasons were only available for purchase on DVD. Unfortunately the missing years include some of the better ones -- Briscoe, Jamie Ross.
Season 2 -- when Chris Noth and Paul Sorvino were the detectives -- has some good episodes, and you can watch on Amazon.
Also some of the later episodes of the show when Cyrus and Lupo were on have some good ones. These are avail. online as well.

I found "Wicked Game" (this week's episode) underwhelming. I had hopes for it because it was gay-themed. And Currie Graham was in it. But he couldn't save the episode. This basically felt like an SVU episode, which is not what I'm looking for in the L&O reboot. I suppose maybe this is what the showrunners think younger viewers want to see since they may only know SVU.
The Hugh Dancy character is a thin wisp of nothing. The political arguments between the detectives seem stilted.
Speaking of SVU, it's very telling that a couple of recent episodes of that tired old workhorse have actually been slightly better than the episodes of this reboot. That doesn't bode well for the new L&O.

The first season of Organized Crime worked really well. I got caught up in it. This season it's just convoluted and confusing. Meloni seems constipated. Replace Dancy with a returned Alexandra Cabot (the best ADA in the L&O universe).
Anderson, out. Replaced with a black female detective.
So then it becomes Law & Order: Catfights, with a female Gen X EADA and millennial female ADA constantly at each other's throats, and a boorish cop (Donovan) constantly pissing off his partner before they ultimately reach an understanding.
Manheim, out. Replaced by a hot guy who can maintain gender balance and also lend some gravitas. I'm thinking Timothy Olyphant. He's old enough to pass as a captain now.

[quote] Is Dylan McDermott moving from LO-OC to FBI Most Wanted
This is weird. I posted a reply to this and it showed up but now it's gone. Maybe it's in another thread somewhere. At any rate, what I posted was:
McDermott began on Most Wanted as a new character replacing Julian McMahon's character two or three weeks ago. I've posted before wondering what was going on because it's unusual to replace a solo lead in the middle of a season. Most Wanted isn't a repertory cast show with multiple leads that come and go like L&O.

I guess I'm one of the few who likes what Donovan is doing and thinks Anderson is phoning it in to pick up a paycheck. Anderson signed for only the first season so we'll see what happens.
I also like what Camryn Manheim has done the past two or three weeks, now that they have actually been giving her things to do. The first few episodes all she seemed to do was wander into the squad room at random and ask what's going on.
Still I'm overall disappointed with the bad writing and lacklustre pacing and direction. ION TV is running the original first season from over 30 years ago and although not everything is settled it's so much more smart, well acted, well paced and gripping than this mess.

Unfortunately I think the showrunners believe that this preachiness on social issues is what viewers want. SVU is preachy and there is a large crop of younger viewers who've only seen SVU and not the other shows. The showrunner thinks he/she needs to do this to attract those people. But making this a carbon copy of SVU will result in failure.

So I keep stupidly watching this, thinking it'll magically get better. The plots are pretty simplistic so that they can get all preachy on social issues. I was expecting something akin to the original, where sometimes the investigation would start in one place and end up somewhere completely different. Plus like the original, there hasn't been a single reveal at the end in the DA's office with family members, etc. pitted against one another and the true murderer exposed. That made for really good drama. This just seems like another retread of the Oleebia show.

Just watched Law/Order and SVU.
Law/Order was old and stale and a plot recycled cut and paste and was dull and tedious and unentertaining.
However, SVU brought back a beloved character, used him at full potential in an interesting cold case AND had a B-line where Oleebia went cunt to cunt with a Queens Major Crime cunt. They wrote her perfectly cunty and the resolution was delicious. A solid A episode.
Oleebia left Jack in the dirt. It's ALL in the writing.

I liked the L&O episode, but overall, I haven't been going through the major freakout some of you are experiencing. I never thought it was that great a show. I probably watched every episode except during the Benjamin Bratt years, but it was just a time killer for me. Homicide: Life on the Street was much more my favorite detective program.
I liked Hugh Dancy's new haircut, which revealed his blowjob ears. I thought, finally, Anderson and Donovan are getting into their opposing viewpoints on the raciality of everything. Camryn Manheim never bothers me. I just wished the two preppies had been cute. Most disappointing HS students in a long time.
I do wish they'd kept Linus Roache as the seniormost DA.

Agreed r219. Though I gave up on L&O half way through, I turned back to NBC for SVU. It was a solid episode last night, the writing, the guest stars, the references to old cases, location shots…it was a true story.

I just checked the writing credits on IMDb. The old series writers, some had 50-70 episodes, have moved on obviously. This season has new writers.

I haven't watched last night's SVU episode yet but the "Barrio" episode from a couple weeks ago was decent and the one about the trucker was tolerable. And someone upthread is saying last night's episode was good. So far SVU is more watchable than the reboot.

I'm starting to think shows like Law & Order will never be great again because the type of writers who would have worked on the show in the early 90s are now doing prestige tv on cable or amazon prime. Thats how much the landscape of television has evolved.

The reboot continues to be just terrible. The main problem is the writing. The episodes fail on every level—believability, suspense, tension, pacing.
I decided to watch this week's show as pure camp, and it didn't even succeed on that front.
It doesn't help that it's immediately followed by SVU, which this week—despite featuring balloon-faced injectable victim Orfeh and batshit Betty Buckley—was miles ahead in terms of telling a compelling and even gripping story.

Noth has been Me2'd.
His character was killed off on The Equalizer to end any speculation of a return. But Bishop was CIA...

Hugh's haircut is terrible-he looked sort of elfin--in 10 years he'll look like Jeff Sessions. Eat a ham sandwich too, Hugh. You're looking emaciated.

Funniest line on any L&O was on SVU this week:
Rollins: It appears that I am better at talking to psychopaths than teenaged girls.
I actually LOL'd.

I agree with R226. I watched the first couple of episodes of "Bosch: Legacy" on Amazon Prime last night thinking that there are so few places where that show could go after "Bosch" wrapped up. Boy, was I wrong. The quality is still great. In fact, the beginning of this season got me even more sucked into it than the start of S6 of "Bosch". And, then, you see something like this reboot of L&O on the grid and think: "Why bother..."

Until this morning I had never seen the SVU episode where Barba was written out for deliberately killing a disabled baby in the ICU. Enter DA Stone.

The crime shows where all cases get neatly wrapped up within a single episode are increasingly feeling like relics from the Stone Age of TV. And then you have to crank out 15-20 such episodes per season.

The SVU about the Christian missionaries was decent. Not my favorite episode of all time but they put some twists into it.

I'm watching "Legacy". A. Anderson is dreadful and they are actually using the word "woke" in the episode. Ugh.

"Legacy" was actually an ok episode (yes I managed to get through the whole thing), compared to the others. But it still seemed like something that we'd seen done before in the past.
Something I don't care for: the Dancy character always tries some novel prosecution or legal tactic for which there is no precedent, and always gets a "guilty" verdict.

The PREACHING. My god. It’s so inorganic. I just want to see detective work in the first half and some courtroom maneuvering in the second.
And some fun character actor cameos. (“Oh, it’s that guy!”)

Yes the self righteous preaching turned me off the show when it was still new. Unsurprising it's NBC's flagship.

I’m watching the marathon on WE tv…with the original, original cast: Sorvino, Noth, Moriarty, Richard Brooks and Steven Hill. I’d never seen them and I am blown away. Fast paced, tight, gripping stories, great cast. Steven Hill actually has involvement in the cases, not like later in the series. Maybe they could get Brooks to come back.

I’ve stopped watching. It seems so formulaic now. Maybe it always was but the actors were better. I like Hugh Dancy but he isn’t riveting.

There are clearly no writers on this show. Sam tells Hugh he can’t win this case. Hugh doesn’t listen. It goes to trial. Hugh wins most of the cases but not all. Lather, rinse, repeat. Dull!

They should replace Anderson with Dot Jones (the MWC & Glee actress) as a big lesbian detective partner Just like real life.

They should bring back the character Kat Azar Tamin, Jamie Gray Hyde, from the SVU shitpile.
Mariska made a big mistake firing her. Mariska, the producer, is going to have to hire another woman to replace Mariska the actress.
Kat Tamin is a GREAT character.

R252 the whole fun was how often they would fuck with the 'formula." So it never felt predicatable.

Can't they bring in S. Epatha in for cameos just so she can roll her eyes when they tell her about what kinds of naughtiness the rich parents of Hudson U. students are up to now?

I'm not adding anything original here...but...
The writing is terrible. The directing is terrible. The acting is terrible. Other than Dancy, who we think is pretty good, the rest are just reciting lines. If you watch close enough, NOBODY is acting. They're reading lines. Reciting lines. No acting evident.
How did Donovan get his own show? He's cringe-worthy bad.
Manheim is particularly miscast because she can only play one character; the same blank one she's always played. She plays Manheim. She still has that same fucking ponytail. It's as if she wandered in off the street, doesn't know where she is, and someone handed her a sheet of paper with words.
The ADA? THAT'S the best they could get in NYC? She has some credits, but she is awful.
Where did all the NYC day laborer actors go? With a few exceptions, even the under 5s and small character parts, who were always really so talented, have been terrible.
It's like watching a high school play. A bad one.
It's so disappointing. We've continued to watch it and spend the entire show ripping apart every actor and scene. Meanwhile hoping it will somehow get better.
It needs a complete recast and they need to bring back Rene Balcer as a writer. Wolf's writing has been simplistic and awkward.
Can't believe it's actually been renewed.
It has an amazing legacy. Who allowed it to be this bad? Wolf? His ego again?
So disappointed.
Thank you for letting me vent.

R262 I've been watching L&O marathons over that last month, and everything you are stating about the current iteration is true. I hated the first go round of Anthony Anderson, but even those seasons seem like Shakespeare compared to what's airing now.

I’ve enjoyed every iteration of L&O, some more than others, except for the current one. I only watch it (on Peacock) to try to figure out what is wrong.

I binged watched the first couple of episodes of the reboot & loved it.
I tried watching it from the start online but found the original actors annoying & stereotypical in season 1 so I gave up after a few episodes.
As someone said earlier "to each their own" but for a short 10 episode season, I think they made a strong foundation for the reboot's "season 2" & will check out all of them when they air.
