Jeff Franklin has listed his Cielo Drive house. Seeing this house really changed my tune. I couldn't believe that he knocked down the former house and built this monstrosity. It's monstrous, but not that bad! I am fascinated by how they had the vision to create this where there was once a little 3 bedroom cabin. The grounds are a paradise. I don't know if I've ever been as surprised by a house.

I dislike it less than I thought I would.
I dont exactly like it, and its far too big, and fairly tacky, but I've seen much worse. The bones actually arent too bad and with nice traditional decor it could be quite acceptable

by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 13, 2022 5:21 PM |
I'm not superstitious but having a house on the site of one of the most famous mass-murders in LA history is creepy, besides the house is hideous compared to what was there

And given the history of the location, I would avoid it no matter what it looked like.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 13, 2022 5:59 PM |
It is hideously tacky, oversized and overprized, which means that there already are several crime lords and Saudi princes desperate to get their blood-stained claws on it, so they can make it even worse.
This is what happens when people who don't have any taste whatsoever become wealthy. Extreme flashiness, gaudy vulgarity and lots of overblown pretentiousness.

In the big 80's I use to house sit for a friend who had a house on Cielo right up the hill from Valentino's Falcon Layer around the corner from the Manson murder house. You do have "jetliner views " but once the sun goes down it gets really creepy really fast. Hard to believe you're in LA as you feel very isolated. I was siting in a bay window alcove when there was a loud bang. Saw blood splattered all over the window. Thought someone took a shot at me. It was a bird that flew into the glass. Happened all the time. Found a dead coyote in the pool. Spooky neighborhood.

Serious question: why don’t celebrities live in reasonably sized homes anymore? It used to be the norm. Wasn’t Marilyn Monroe’s home just under 3000 square ft? And she was the biggest star of that era. Why is EVERYTHING so ruinous and soulless now?

My Nana built the original house for $20k which she earned as a bubble machine operator for Lawrence Welk, who lived two doors down next to Bob Hope. Once, when Junior Niven and Ricardo Montalban we’re playing volleyball in Cheryl Ladd’s pool, Ricardo’s leg fell off. Well, we all laughed and laughed until Cheryl’s dog ran off with it and buried it Nana’s rose garden. But that’s a story for another time.

This should be turned into a retreat for abused women or other non profit. Otherwise, it's just an unholy monstrosity built from selfish greed. That bastard only bought this particular lot for it's future value. He didn't give a damn about the people who were slaughtered there. I saw photos of a big party Franklin thew at Cielo that was a 1960's theme. There was one pic of John Stamos with a woman who was dressed like Sharon Tate. Very poor taste.
Best scenario for Cielo would be natural disaster where no one gets hurt.

Putting aside all bad karma, I can't imagine ever feeling comfortable there. You'd need guard dogs, guns and knives. Never knowing which lookie loos were Manson groupies. Which ones were mentally unstable. No thanks! Btw, that hillside looks quite easy to scale. Yikers.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 14, 2022 2:45 AM |
The double decker parking structure is necessary due to lack of ground level space. I'm sure the massive amount of rebar/cement is also needed to support the mansion and the steep ledge it sits on. I noticed the guy has a full bar adjacent to the lower parking level. Less staggering to the car.

I like that some of the ceilings and archways and such are callbacks to actual old 1920s-1930s LA properties, but I remember seeing this guy talking about his house for years, going on ghost hunting shows and pretending like it was haunted, just to generate interest. I'd avoid giving this guy a dime just on general principle.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 14, 2022 9:48 AM |
No idea, r77. He got the limp while filming Across the Wide Missouri, just Google it. MaryMax said the limp was an injury, but also a deformed back. The injury was right, the latter part was wrong, and probably based on Montalban's spinal issues, which were publicized, but didn't occur until the 2000s.
It's like the whole thing about Bob Hope's house, she was really talking about Allen Questrom's old house on Oriole Way but said it was Hope's, and got about 50% of the facts about the house right, the other 50% wrong. She did that with everything.

The original house on the property, the one where Tate and co. were slaughtered, was built by a French actress named Michele Morgan in the 1940s. It was Morgan's dream house and she planned to live there for a long time but moved out after only about 2 years because of strange happenings. Voices could be heard in the living room, and shadows that looked like people could be seen outside, moving past the windows. Morgan always felt uncomfortable in the house and couldn't remain there so she moved.

Strange, but true:
The original house at 10050 Cielo Drive was designed by renowned L.A. architect Robert Byrd (known for his rustic, ranch-style homes).
The house at 5065 Encino Ave -- site of the Phil & Brynn Hartman murder/suicide -- was designed by his son, Gary Byrd. (It was built 1980-81; the Hartmans were not the first owners)
