Gaydar- Can You Always Tell If Someone Is Gay?
I'm VERY good at discerning if a guy is gay but I cannot always tell if someone is gay. Anyone who says they can ALWAYS tell that someone is gay is full of shit.
I have a question too. I was at Whole Foods today and my cashier ( he's been my cashier two or three times lately) is a husky Latino guy ( cubbish type) he sounds straight and looks straight BUT his nails are long and they are all painted- some black and some red. Is he just a funky/alt straight guy or do you think he's gay. I'm not attracted to him nor was he flirting etc. My inquiring gay mind wants to know what the DL people think.

Long nails on guys: could possibly be a guitar player. I play guitar (not well) and noticed that some players grow out the nails on their strumming hand to acts a guitar picks. Long nails are not good on the fretboard hand, though. Impedes pressing the strings.

Would a straight guy paint his long nails red and black?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 12, 2022 6:39 PM

No, I don't think so, OP / R4.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 12, 2022 6:42 PM

r4, yes. More and more straight guys paint their nails. Back then, it started with the goth and emo guys.
My gaydar depends on my observation skills. Like, when a guy - subtlety - checks out guys and the way he does it (like, is he sizing them up to see if they are a threat to him and his self perceived ego male status or is like he's lusting for the guy's cock or ass?).
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 12, 2022 6:46 PM

I have never seen a Latino or really any man of color paint his nails unless he is gay.
Long fingernails are a turn off for me. And if they are painted he better not even try to flirt with me.
OP, I'm not sure what you mean by the first sentence of your post, but the cashier queen is gay!

[quote] “A gay guy could be wearing painted nails, and a straight guy could be wearing painted nails, and it’s like, we have that in common, we can be friends, we can hang out, we can talk, we’re destroying the stigmas, and I think that’s a great thing.”

I think a gay man's gaydar depends on two things: (1) How attractive YOU are and (2) How observant YOU are!
The more attractive you are then, the more EVERYONE is looking at you, but only a gay guy is gonna give you "THE LOOK" and we all know what that is.
If you are observant then you will see guys checking YOU out and your gaydar will be going off!

R8 I think those are more isolated incidents as opposed to a trend.
Men painting their nails will never be "a thing" like when it became cool for a man to wear an earring in the left ear and then both ears.

R11- That is certainly a way to tell someone is gay by them expressing an interest in you but I use my gaydar watching an actor on a tv show or a talk show- sometimes they have that deer caught in the headlights look in their eyes and they also have feminine lips- that Irish actor has the GAY stare and the GAY lips- Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

As part of your job? Where do you work, in a bank? The setting is important. You see guys with painted nails more likely in a club, or party. Less likely in a white collar business. The guy in OP's scenario is a cashier in a local supermarket.

Who said anything about mainstream? OP surely didn't. He saw a cashier in Whole Foods and it made him wonder. Straight guys into the alternative music scene have done it for ages. It's not unusual on social media (like TikTok and Instagram) where guys share their pics and clips while casually hanging out with their friends, in clubs, at concerts, on vacations, etc.
And in 2020 it was considered a trend pushed by mostly straight identified celebrities. And some queer ones.

Not always. People who say they do usually are pointing out the most obvious queens. Almost all effeminate men are gay but not all gay men are effeminate. That said I do think gay men are way more likely to dress better, take care of their bodies and walk with more rhythm and quickly. Even if they are big, muscular or chubby there's some androgynous quality. The stereotypical gay face which is thin with wide-set eyes, curved eyebrows, small chin and big lips tends to be truer than not. I also find many other gay men to be a bit socially awkward around men they like especially if they aren't fully sure they are gay back which can come across as rude.

R62 All boys are kinda gay. That is not a surprise. And whey I say "gay" I don't mean sexually active. I mean they are more free to do feminine things without being side eyed. They skip, they scream, snap each others underwear. They do all kinds of Nelly shit. Doing gay stuff at that age doesn't make you "gay." It also doesn't make the shit any less gay. LOL

One day he was scanning my items and he picked up my bag of frozen vegetables and said - You can use this for an ice pack. Then he took my herbs- I wasn't sure if they were Cilantro or Italian parsley so he said- I'LL smell these for you! I did not flirt back. He was cute/good looking too.
