The Pointer Sisters are left out of the women in rock discussion most of the time
National Lampoon's Vacation used "I'm So Excited" during Christie Brinkley's scenes and June Pointer's "Little Boy Sweet"

Dare Me is so damn funky, and the video is hilarious. I always liked the one with the gap the best.

I adore the Pointer Sisters. They had some subversive hits. All gospel arrangements but with synthesizers and drum machines and singing about penises and cumming via vis wildly creative allusions. Adore them! They were wicked.

R1 kind of like how The Whispers meant it...

Jump was MAJOR in the 80s and a lot of NBA teams adopted it as their theme song

I love them too, but they weren't "rock," OP.

When I went on a trip to Chicago with my Mom and she said I could buy anything as a souvenir, I chose the Pointer Sisters "Serious Slammin" cassette

I like that each of the three got a chance to do lead vocals on a major hit. Not many groups were able to do that (Three Dog Night is the only other I can think of). And when they all sang a verse of "I Need You", it was sublime.

Put these babes in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, already. If they can make room in there for those stinkin' Moody Blues, they can surely give these genre-crossing stars a spot, too!
They had hits in pop, soul, country, adult contemporary, and probably some other genre I don't even know. They've done decades of national tours, overseas work, USO tours in wartime and peacetime, and had a hit song appear in both "Beverly Hills Cop" AND "30 Rock." Let's see Jethro Tull or Pat Benatar do THAT!

One of their biggest singles is a Bruce Springsteen song

Not one of their bigger hits but always brings a smile to my face. Makes me want to grab a hairbrush and sing along.

R16 you speak of the Junebush, seen here in the I’m so Excited video.

Tina Turner's later solo work isn't that far away from the Pointer Sisters, and she has always been considered a rock singer, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016
Even Dolly Parton is a nominee this year

For some reason I’ve been obsessed with the song Slow Hand lately…
Only heard it for the first time a few years ago.

R20 I remember that song playing in the background of a scene in "Taps," where Tom Cruise and Timothy Hutton (and about a dozen other teenaged boys) are hanging around shirtless before bedtime, working out and swapping stories.
I guess in 1981, even white teen boys liked The Pointer Sisters.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 15, 2022 11:29 PM |
R22 in the 80s, all kids loved the Pointer Sisters. Jump For My Love, the Neutron Dance, I’m So Excited, Automatic - these songs were on the radio all the time.

I love them so. Thanks for starting a thread about them.
I've been relistening to all their albums lately, and many of the songs hold up well. Their first several albums were all different themes. They really had such great range that many folks didn't know about from listening to just the 80s hits.
Here's one that I wish had been a hit.

Jesus fuck christ - you elder fags are suffering dementia. How many times a year do you do the same thread? There was recently a 300 post thread on the Pointer Sisters. It was nice. Some good music. Gossip. Drugs. The usual arguments. No one under 50 was convinced that they are relevant or remembered. Yikes.
Get a hobby ELDERS. Take up snorkelling or hip hop dance glasses. Stop reliving forgotten DISCO music from 50 years ago. You ain't never gonna be shaking it or getting dick in you EVER again. YIKES.
This is hilarious. Your memory is bad - have you changed your diaper today?

R20 I've always wanted a good remix of the Pointer Sisters and Conway Twitty singing that song. Both he and the Pointer Sisters took part in Rhythm, Country and Blues record, but for whatever reason they didn't have them singing together and didn't have them do Slow Hand which was a major hit for both. I think the album would've had a hit single if they had.

R38 swallowed the bait, as always. Glory hole gum job old fag. He had his own Xtube channel when that was a thing. He knows dick about music and no MAN wants his slobber on his dick anymore. You can smell his diaper leak all through the bookstore.
Pay for my time and I'll teach you how to hip hop in your wheelchair grand gramps. Oh, what a fool you are. RISING to the bait. Lower, lower and lower you sink. Did you see that last Pointer Sisters thread that you swooned and gurgled over just 4 months ago? Your posts are traceable you know.
Beyoncé is of course a great artist. And our most important female performer of the last 25 years. Seismic, artistically, culturally and musically.
The Pointer sisters were 30 year old coke heads before they even had a minor hit record. And they remained coke heads until their sad nondescript neon career was over. The could sing of course. But they do not belong in the same sentence or stratosphere as Beyoncé.
May god bless you and visit healing upon your troubled mind and failing body R38. What a disgrace you are.

F&F. Abolish him. He is loathed on this site. The ANCIENT bitch has a curious connection that I'm not sure DataLounge would want revealed.

I've always loved their music. "Slow Hand" from 1981 is one of the best. It's how sexy is done.

He’s So Shy is my favorite.

Automatic and Slow Hand are amazing. So is Fire. I know it’s a Springsteen song but it sounds interesting when sung by him.

Bruce Springsteen wrote the song “Fire.”
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 20, 2022 2:19 AM |
I feel like Whitney did a lot of what they did in terms of style on her up tempo stuff. Not that she stole it, but after she did it the Pointers kind of lost out and didn’t get played.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 20, 2022 2:22 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 20, 2022 2:23 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 20, 2022 2:28 AM |
That bitch Tina turner looked down on them and scoffed when a label suggest she make music like them.
I don’t see how Tina’s music is so much more “Rock n roll”. I could see her singing a song like “fire”.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 20, 2022 2:29 AM |
Tina was more “rock” because she only associated with white guys like Mick Jagger and Bryan Adams. She even played Sun City. Tina’s persona was sexy but her solo songs rejected love and intimacy.

My favorite PS album is LIVE AT THE OPERA HOUSE. It was recorded in the early 70s and they never sounded better. Their selections of songs ranged from R&B, Jazz, Country and Broadway ("Steam Heat')
It's worth a listen if you're able to find it. I downloaded it from Napster.
