Courteney Cox's New Horror Series Shining Vale Debuts March 6

Looks fun.

SHINING VALE, a combination of classical horror and family dramedy, premieres with two episodes Sunday, March 6 on the Starz app and its domestic and international streaming platforms, as well as its linear channel at 10:20 p.m. ET/PT in the U.S. and Canada. Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, it stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, Gus Birney, Merrin Dungey, Dylan Gage (“PEN15”), Judith Light and Sherilyn Fenn (TWIN PEAKS). The synopsis: “Pat and Terry Phelps [Cox and Kinnear] cash in their life savings and move from a cramped apartment in Brooklyn to an old Victorian mansion in Shining Vale, Connecticut as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage after Pat’s torrid affair with Frank, their young hot handyman who came over to fix the sink while Terry was at work. To make matters worse for Terry, Frank never fixed the sink, yet still charged him for it!

“A former “wild child” who rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women’s empowerment novel (a.k.a. lady porn), Pat is now clean and sober 17 years later but totally unfulfilled. She still hasn’t written her second novel, she can’t remember the last time she had sex with her husband, while her teenage daughter, Gaynor [Birney] wants Pat dead and Jake [Gage], their adolescent son, is so addicted to screens he’s completely checked out. Buying a 200-year-old house that was on the market for almost three years and sold for more than $250K below asking seemed like a good idea on paper, but Pat senses that the Phelpses are not alone; especially when an old-fashioned-looking woman appears hovering outside their family room window.

“The Phelps quickly learn why the agents were so motivated to sell the house for a fraction of the asking price. Seems a few details were glossed over, including a triple murder-suicide and a host of other atrocities they neglected to mention. But neither Terry nor the kids seem to notice that something is horribly wrong with their new home; only Pat can see things move and hear the bumps in the night. She’s also the only one who sees the spirit of the person who used to live there, Rosemary [Sorvino], a ’50s housewife who may or may not be trying to take over Pat’s body. Is Pat depressed, or possessed? Turns out the symptoms are exactly the same.

“Everyone has their demons, but for Pat Phelps, they may be real.”

Am I suing?

by Anonymousreply 1February 9, 2022 10:39 PM

I feel sorry for Greg Kinnear and Miro Sorvino, who are too good for this POS. But I guess they're lucky to find work.

by Anonymousreply 2February 9, 2022 10:43 PM

Horror TV has been having a good run. I'm intrigued.

I'll give it a chance. I still like her show "Dirt" from the 2010s.

by Anonymousreply 4February 9, 2022 10:48 PM

Which one had the affair with the hot handy man? Pat and Terry are, uh, gender neutral names.

by Anonymousreply 5February 9, 2022 10:50 PM

This looks promising.

by Anonymousreply 6February 9, 2022 10:50 PM

R5 Pat, Cox's character. Yeah, it was a bit confusing.

by Anonymousreply 7February 9, 2022 10:57 PM

Terrible. The premise been done a million times.

by Anonymousreply 8February 9, 2022 11:23 PM

The trailer didn't really win me over but Sherilyn looks good.

by Anonymousreply 9February 10, 2022 5:16 AM

It just debuted this week, I think I will watch it.

by Anonymousreply 10March 8, 2022 6:13 PM

Her face is scary enough.

by Anonymousreply 11March 8, 2022 6:20 PM

I didn't even recognize Sherilyn at first, not because she doesn't look great (she does) I just didn't expect to see her in this!

by Anonymousreply 12March 8, 2022 6:21 PM

Hahahha her face is the same as it was ten years ago R11, how come people haven't gotten used to it yet? She will not go back to the small face she had in the 1990s.

by Anonymousreply 13March 8, 2022 6:29 PM

I don't remember filming this.

by Anonymousreply 14March 8, 2022 6:37 PM

I've already seen her in Shing Fillers, and that was genuine horror.

by Anonymousreply 15March 8, 2022 6:40 PM

She is a handsome woman now.

by Anonymousreply 16March 8, 2022 6:46 PM

In which episode does Rosemary invent Post-Its?

by Anonymousreply 17March 8, 2022 6:49 PM

R17 nicely done 😄

Between “Friends” and the “Scream” franchise, Courteney Cox knew that playing both comedy and horror were well within her wheelhouse — but something told her that the new Starz series “Shining Vale” would test her skills in unprecedented ways.

“Such a dramatic role that also was comedic was a balance that I hadn’t played in quite this way,” Cox said.

by Anonymousreply 19March 9, 2022 10:17 AM

“I knew I wanted to be a part of it because of the creators,” said Cox. “I just know how talented they both are, and then I read it. And I just love the way within 30 minutes, there’s so many things to play and what she’s going through: having a teenage daughter, trying to get her family back together, going through this writer’s block – she feels just really unhappy and purposeless. It resonated, the fact that she’s depressed.” As bizarre supernatural activities increasingly invade her new environment, Pat’s fragile mental state inspires doubt among her family: a metaphor, both horrific and satiric, for the culture’s tendency to dismiss the problems of women of a certain age.

“It’s really heavy issues, and they’re real,” said Cox. “She’s not being believed when she sees a ghost for the first time and it’s just so frustrating…It’s an honest topic in every way. When you are the age that she is, it’s what people go through.” But the comedic aspect, she says, allows the scarier stuff to go down easier. “I love the comedy of it. I just love everything about this show: I love the sparring between me and Greg, and I love that it’s a half-hour – that’s just right up my alley. I have the attention span of hummingbird!”

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2022 10:19 AM

Courteney's face has settled but still scarier than anything in Scream 5.

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2022 10:37 AM

^^^^^^^

You trolls are mean 😂😁😁😁😁😁😆

by Anonymousreply 22March 10, 2022 9:42 PM

Tried to get through the first episode, it was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 23March 10, 2022 9:48 PM

I didn’t like it. It reminded me of AHS a bit. Maybe I’ll give it another chance, but I found myself picking at holes in the plot instead of waving them away.

by Anonymousreply 24March 11, 2022 10:28 PM

Cox and Sorvino are miscast.

by Anonymousreply 25May 6, 2022 4:27 PM

Um, it's spelled VEIL.

by Anonymousreply 26May 6, 2022 4:33 PM

One episode was more than enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 27May 6, 2022 5:24 PM

That bad?

by Anonymousreply 28May 7, 2022 6:39 AM

I watched it all in April, and I am glad to know that there will be a season 2, Courteney is still a good actress.

by Anonymousreply 29May 28, 2022 4:13 PM

I'm watching it now. The two leads are at least 15 years too old for the part. 59yo Kinnear looks fit and handsome, though. Cox is fit but her face is beyond hope.

Nice to see Sherilyn, who looks pretty and much more natural than Cox.

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2022 1:40 PM

Courtney should embrace her looks, like Meg Foster has.

by Anonymousreply 31July 3, 2022 1:57 PM

Too much has been removed from Courtney face. It will now never age normally.

by Anonymousreply 32July 3, 2022 2:00 PM

The problem is she needs to pull her hair off her face a bit and part it on the side. She looks fine, especially for a woman her age, but her hair style is aging her.

by Anonymousreply 33July 3, 2022 2:03 PM

yes a short do would help. She had some on Friends and was pretty.

by Anonymousreply 34July 3, 2022 2:07 PM

Is she still engaged to that Irish dude?

by Anonymousreply 35July 3, 2022 2:14 PM

Her hair is black and she's only ever been seen that way. Most white women lighten their hair as they age because the stark contrast of black hair against a pale face emphasizes features and complexion, including all the imperfections that come with aging. But it just wouldn't be 'on brand' for her to have lighter-colored hair.

I've seen interviews with her that made me like her. She doesn't take herself seriously. She has admitted in interviews that she fucked up her face with weird procedures and was trying to stop it, but that it's hard to age on camera. That's fair and honest.

She also has said she was too busy or too lazy to memorize some of her lines on Friends and would tape them onto objects to read while shooting the show, and that her castmates who did the work would sabotage her by taking the cues away and leaving her to fend for herself. That's obviously unprofessional of her to have done, but I give her a lot of credit for admitting it. I like her. She seems to be in touch with reality and not regard herself as more important than she is.

by Anonymousreply 36July 3, 2022 2:31 PM

Didn't she have chunky highlights as Gail Weathers?

by Anonymousreply 37July 3, 2022 2:43 PM

R37 Yes and it did soften her features IMO

Andrew Ridings "Blake" is cute.

The series is enjoyable if nothing special. Courtney Cox is doing a better job than I expected.

Why don't they just call it "Shining 90s Has-Beens?

by Anonymousreply 40July 4, 2022 9:32 PM

She also had brown hair on Screm 2, Scream 2 and 3 aired two nights ago and her haircut was horrible in Scream 3.

Neve Campbell still has the same haircut since 1998

by Anonymousreply 41July 8, 2022 4:59 PM

HAHAHAHAHA R40

They were still relevant in the first half of the 2000s R40

by Anonymousreply 42July 8, 2022 5:08 PM

Oooh I'm getting into it now. It's juicy!

by Anonymousreply 43September 4, 2023 3:01 AM

[Quote]Um, it's spelled VEIL.

[Quote]—How stupid are the scriptwriters?

Um, R26, "vale" is a real word. It means "valley" or "dale" or "world": this vale of tears

by Anonymousreply 44September 4, 2023 3:44 AM

So basically this is a light rewrite of the first season of American Horror Story?

The Murder House, with much hotter (and more naked) Dylan McDermott and more talented Connie Britton?

by Anonymousreply 45September 4, 2023 3:50 AM

I'm 4 episodes in and honestly, it's better than the first season of AHS except for the Jessica Lange part.

The acting and scripts are tighter.

by Anonymousreply 46September 4, 2023 4:36 AM

Season 2 is out soon. I wonder which direction they’re taking.

The chemistry between Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear is fabulous.
