Young Billy Crudup back in the 90s

Did anyone go see his Broadway play “Bus Stop” with Mary Louise Parker back in 1996? I heard they were terrific but was only 10 and my mom wouldn’t take me to go even though I always loved plays and musicals since young.

He was so hot. My goodness. What a perfect face. He still looks good, but aging is a bitch.

He was terrific in Almost Famous, which was my first real introduction to him. This gayling had a massive crush.

I had a crush on him circa 1996. He was an it boy. Sleepers was supposed to take his career to the next level but it didn’t happen.

by Anonymousreply 8February 9, 2022 10:10 PM

The Monroe movie (1956) was adapted from the William Inge play, which was a Broadway hit that opened in 1955 with Kim Stanley in the lead role.

by Anonymousreply 9February 9, 2022 10:11 PM

I met him. Sweet, unpretentious guy.

by Anonymousreply 10February 9, 2022 10:13 PM

The original Broadway production was done in 1955 R4, the Marilyn Monroe film version of the play was a year or so later. The Crudup Broadway production was mid- to late- 1990’s and lasted about a month. Crudup was appropriately sexy, Mary Louise Parker was miscast, and the delicious Kelly Bishop was the best part of it.

by Anonymousreply 11February 9, 2022 10:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2022 10:30 PM

Saw him last in Alien Covenant. Still handsome; he's stayed thin, so his face is haggard. When you reach a certain age, you choose between weighing a few extra pounds or being gaunt.

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2022 10:31 PM

R15 he just won an Emmy in 2020.

He’s been casually dating Naomi Watts for about 5 years. They worked together on Gypsy on Netflix which only lasted one season.

She very occasionally mentions him on IG, most recently when he got a SAG nomination I think.

He made a great looking couple with Jennifer Connelly in “inventing the Abbotts”

by Anonymousreply 30February 9, 2022 10:55 PM

Always seemed to be on the edge of stardom, but never quite made it. I’ve never met him, but he always seemed very full of himself. I did see him in “Shipwreck,” Part II of Tom Stoppard’s “The Coast of Utopia.” I would have seen him in a larger role in Part I, but he was out that night. His understudy was wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 31February 9, 2022 10:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 34February 9, 2022 11:08 PM

He’s not a huge star, but he’s been working steadily for more than 30 years and has had a great career. Four Tony nominations, one win, an Emmy., lots of prestigious movie roles.

I just don’t understand what he ever saw in Clare Danes.

by Anonymousreply 35February 9, 2022 11:34 PM

Doormen at Mary Louise Parker's Washington Square West building didn't like her. "She thinks who she is." They were glad when she moved.

Hollywood tried making him a movie star a few times but it never happened.

Sleepers was supposed to be his big breakout but it didn’t work. Then Almost Famous was supposed to make him a movie star but all the hype was stolen away from him by Kate Hudson. Watchmen was supposed to be big but that fell flat, and then the last Alien movie also.

He finally found some mainstream success with The Morning Show after years of Hollywood trying to make him another theater darling turned movie star.

by Anonymousreply 42February 10, 2022 12:15 AM

I first saw him in a movie about Charles II. Couldn't find it in his imdb filmography though.

I saw Mary-Louise on Broadway in "The Sound Inside" right before COVID lockdown. She was fine but seemed nothing like an actual Ivy League English professor (due also to the lame dialogue), still can't believe she won a Tony. She had a bit part in that Jennifer Lawrence spy movie a few years ago that seemed like it was cut down/edited. Wasn't there supposed to be a Weeds reboot despite her and Jenji Kohan hating each other?

Gawd he is sensational in stage beauty. Bisexual character too if I remember? Anyway very talented and seems low key. Doesn't do the publicity thing so that would hurt your career. So I would say that and the fact he seems to choose roles on merit, usually, means he is not a bigger star. But dummies on here will of course be like oh he never made it, oh he tried, oh Hollywood tried. Dummies.

by Anonymousreply 63February 11, 2022 8:55 PM

Hollywood DID try around Almost Famous. It was supposed to be a vehicle for him.

by Anonymousreply 64February 11, 2022 8:57 PM

I saw that BUS STOP, and I thought Mary-Louise was well cast but Billy, not so much. He doesn't have the right kind of energy for that role, plus he's a little too slight for it from a physical standpoint. I think Beau is supposed to be a big, rangy cowboy.

by Anonymousreply 65February 11, 2022 8:59 PM

He was great in Almost Famous, but the cast around him was just as great or even better. And it was sort of an unforgiving part as a guy who’s ultimately a narcissistic flake.

He reminds me of a less charismatic Ethan Hawke. Like he gets the parts Ethan rejects.

by Anonymousreply 66February 11, 2022 9:05 PM

That Bus Stop revival stank to the heavens. And it was done at Circle in the Square which isn't known as a house for intimate shows like Bus Stop.

by Anonymousreply 67February 11, 2022 9:06 PM

Brad Pitt was originally cast as that part in Almost Famous as a vehicle to try and get an acting Oscar but he dropped out. They then cast Crudup and thought this would make him a movie star.

by Anonymousreply 68February 11, 2022 9:08 PM

Brad would have been great in that part, although it would have changed to more of a “this guy is selfish because he’s always been a golden god” vibe, rather than a sort of ruthless self-centered ambitious guy.

by Anonymousreply 75February 11, 2022 9:36 PM

R73 Are you referring to his penis?

by Anonymousreply 76February 11, 2022 9:39 PM

I read a funny and interesting tweet about Inventing the Abbotts basically saying that when it came out you thought Crudup going to be the next Brad Pitt/Robert Redford type and that Joaquin Phoenix was going to basically have a Giovanni Ribisi-level career. But women really liked Phoenix and he became the heartthrob (until he intentionally ended it with I'm Still Here) and women just didn't take to Crudup.

I think like what others have mentioned, he oozed smugness and seemed cold. Whereas Phoenix, in his weirdness, can have a real sweetness and charm when he wants to. It reminds me of the first few seasons of Girls. You would think Christopher Abbott would've emerged from that show the heartthrob/star, but women love weird ass Adam Driver.

by Anonymousreply 77February 11, 2022 9:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 78February 11, 2022 9:53 PM

Joaquin has a vulnerable and sincere qualify that Billy C doesn’t.

by Anonymousreply 79February 11, 2022 9:54 PM

R78 He has those creases in his face.

They're worse now. He's beginning to get a concave face like 'Spoon-face Keira Knightley'.

by Anonymousreply 80February 11, 2022 9:56 PM

[quote]And it was done at Circle in the Square which isn't known as a house for intimate shows like Bus Stop.

I think that's a pretty weird statement, seeing as how Circle in the Square is considered one of the most intimate Broadway houses in terms of seating capacity and also because no seats there are very far from the stage due to the three-quarter-thrust or, sometimes, in-the-round setup. If you commented that "Bus Stop" doesn't necessarily lend itself to a three-quarter-thrust staging, that would have made more sense. Anyway, I think the major problems with that production were the direction and the miscasting of Crudup.

by Anonymousreply 81February 11, 2022 9:57 PM

LOL.

Every post about aging has a bunch of fat eldergays bragging that even though they weigh a metric ton, the fat prevents their skin from wrinkling and then they use $500 worth of random cremes and potions to keep it "positively glowing"

Forgetting of course that "That obese old man looks so young and his skin is just glowing, I do so want to make my way through his folds of flesh and ravish him" is a classic example of "Said No One Ever"

A lot of the films he starred in during that period didn't catch on. Without Limits (one of the 2 Steve Prefontaine movies that came out around the same time), The Hi-Lo Country, Jesus' Son, Waking the Dead, etc.. Almost Famous did well critically/Awards wise, but not so much at the box office. He probably needed to get an Oscar nomination during that period to sustain the hype but it didn't happen. It seems easier these days for a up-and-coming actor to get Awards attention.

Then the MLP/Danes brouhaha happened. His career was definitely hurt by it, but I bet if he was, say, an Oscar-nominated/winning actor or had starred in a couple box office hits, then he would've gotten out of that unscathed (see: Daniel Day-Lewis).

From 1996 to November 2003, Crudup was in a relationship with actress Mary-Louise Parker. Parker was seven months pregnant with their son, born in January 2004, when Crudup ended their relationship and began dating actress Claire Danes. He was co-owner of Parker's Washington Square West apartment.

by Anonymousreply 107February 11, 2022 11:57 PM

Someone on DL said they heard that the Crudup/MLP breakup went down differently than reported. Yes, he was cheating with Danes but he had no intention of leaving MLP. It was Danes, who fell in love, who took measures into her own hands and planted something (underwear?) to let MLP know. She dumped him and since the heat of the media was on, it was probably the least bad look to make a go of it with Danes and to act like he just fell in love. I

That always sounded pretty believable to me. It would explain why the Crudup/Danes relationship didn't last long. It's hard to fathom dumping someone who's that far along. What if she was so heartbroken/humiliated she became suicidal or acted out in a way that put the baby at risk?

by Anonymousreply 108February 12, 2022 12:20 AM

Thanks, R108. Of course I have no idea, but I've always suspected it was MLP who chose to end the marriage to Crudup. Just based mostly on what we know of the personalities involved.

I saw him in Arcadia at Lincoln Center in the mid-90s. Fell in love on the spot. Hollywood always wanted to make him happen but it never clicked, and one sensed he didn't seem truly to care. There were some good early films where he was really beautiful like ABBOTS and WAKING THE DEAD. ALMOST FAMOUS will be his defining role. Nicole and Naomi have been friends for 30 years. Nicole would not do that to Naomi‘s boyfriend.

Breaking up with MLP certainly tainted Billy’s reputation, perhaps permanently, but there have to be two sides to every story.

MLP and BC’s son is named William so she must not have hated Billy, even at the time of their son’s birth.

by Anonymousreply 124March 1, 2022 5:13 PM

Well we do not know why she told him to fuck off. It was only speculated. Perhaps she simply doesn’t like him or was caught off guard.

by Anonymousreply 127March 1, 2022 5:28 PM

He left MLP when she was pregnant with his child. Creepy. But maybe it's karma for celebrities. Mary Louise Parker played a part in breaking up Timothy Hutton's marriage to Debra Winger when they did "Prelude to a Kiss" on Broadway in 1990. They did the play, got some Tony nominations, and moved in together. Winger wasn't pregnant at the time, but she and Timmy did have a small child, so it's similar.

Or maybe people just fall out of love and move on.

I don't buy that this actually happened.

[quote]There are still tons of beautiful people …

On Instagram, TikTok, OnlyFans, etc.

I was talking specifically about movie stars. In recent years woke Hollywood has has opted to cast more 'unconventional-looking' people, to say the least. Stupid marketing move, because sex/beauty always sells. Look at the success of the models on those aforementioned sites.

You're right.

Choosing movie stars because of their 'diversity' means Choosing ugly movie stars.

Of course, I'm on board with the idea that not everyone in a movie or TV show, not even the leads, should look like a model. But it's possible to go too far in the other direction. There are lots of actors who are nowhere near model-handsome or model-pretty but are still very attractive -- and then there are actors so unattractive that no one wants to look at them, no matter how talented they are. And yes, I am referring to the leads in "Licorice Pizza."

Yes, our advertisements are now full of odd-looking uggos.

Great looking, can act, but can we all agree, HORRIBLE NAME. "Billy" make him sound like a perpetual 6-year-old (what's wrong with Wiiliam?) and "Crudup", are you kidding me?

by Anonymousreply 139March 1, 2022 10:06 PM

That’s his surname. Why should he change it?

by Anonymousreply 140March 1, 2022 10:17 PM

R140 Because he's in the business of selling himself, his body, his personality to the general public for their approval.

His income depends on our approval.

by Anonymousreply 141March 1, 2022 10:20 PM

Well he’s done perfectly fine. He has a non Jewish European WASPY surname. He’s approved.

by Anonymousreply 142March 1, 2022 10:24 PM

Crudup = Probably an Americanized form of North German Gratop, a nickname for an old man, from Middle Low German gra 'gray' + top 'braid' (modern German Zopf).
