SOAP fans

How old were you when you first got hooked on a soap?

I was 6, maybe even younger. My brothers as well. We all watched a British SOAP called Crossroads. If I was at a friend's house and I asked to watch it, they thought I was peculiar "Mommy, Tony wants to watch Crossroads!"

There must be others here who began young.

I liked Dial, because it floats!

My mom used to talk about it being time for her stories. Search for Tomorrow Came first, then she took a break, and the Guiding Light. I can remember Emily falling out a window to her death in SFT and Renata's death in the fire was the first time something on TV made me cry. (Hey, mom, if you haven't noticed I'm as queer as a three dollar bill!) I got her onto Y&R later in life and I stuck with GL for a long time... gave it up when JFP came in with her mafia story. JFP ruined most of the soaps I enjoyed.

I had to go to a neighbor's house for an hour after school every day until my mom got home from work. She got me hooked on General Hospital when I was 8. It was when Laura first came on as a teenager and bashed David Hamilton's head in.

JFP didn't do a mafia storyline on GL. It was Paul Rauch who introduced the Santos crime family to GL back in 1998.

Of course, JFP was the one in charge when they decided to make mob kingpin Sonny Corinthos the moral center of General Hospital.

I know Luke Spencer and GH were #metoo -ed recently about his rape of Laura but I don’t remember any flack about having 15 year old Laura sleeping with colllege grad/law school student Scotty Baldwin (who she married at 17) and the much older friend of her stepfather David Hamilton (who she killed).

Seeing Joan Crawford in The Secret Storm.

I was around 7 or 8 when a young gal named Cookie was held captive in a basement on "Secret Storm." My older sister was watching the show, and I got hooked. Once Cookie was finally freed, I skipped over to "Edge of Night" and got invested in a big murder mystery (including court case) for a about a year. Then off to "Dark Shadows." I was a diehard soap fan from there on, watching "All My Children" "Ryan's Hope" as they debuted.

My first memories of soaps were my mom watching "The Edge Of Night". There was a great murder mystery on then , the Stephanie Martin murder....everybody wanted that bitch dead. Then , of course, Dark Shadows. What kid didn't watch that? Barnabas and Angelique! Then I remember Mom and Sis getting hooked on the first big triangle in soaps (Alice, Steve and Rachel) on Another World. Robin Strasser was fantastic as Rachel.

But the soap that really hooked me was As The World Turns. This was during the time when Steve and Betsy were the main storyline. Meg Ryan, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore were just starting out, and then Doug Marland took the show to a whole new level. I stayed with the show till the (bitter) end.

We had one tv in the house and my mom watched all the ABC soaps. There were like 5 or 6 on circa 1971 . She also watched DOOL so I remember when Dr . Marlena came on and Mike Horton got crushed by the truck and when Maggie was on crutches. Over the years. I watched sporadically but now that I work from home I watch every day.

Summer of 1985. My grandparents both watched the ABC lineup (the one hour shows-Not shitty Loving or Ryans Hope either) and they got me hooked on One Life To Live.

They cracked me up how they would discuss the characters during the shows.

Good times.

I ended up watching Y&R and OLTL throughout the years and felt soaps were done by 2005 or so.

I honestly do not know how anyone watches the shows that are left. They all look absolutely horrible.

Around 1978 I started watching All My Children on summer break, my mother & grandmother were huge fans, & they used to call each other at the end of each show to discuss! It was the plot line with Nina & her Jane Eyre/attic mother that hooked me. By high school I was hooked on all the ABC shows; Silver Kane & Lucy Coe we’re my idols. Later in high school I tried to switch to the CBS ones, thinking they were more sophisticated (!!) but it didn’t last long. Now I realize I switched because I was so in love with Thom Bierdz, Jon Hensley, & Carl Tye Evans. Today’s soaps look horrible, but I’ll check in on Lucy every now & then.

I’m so old that I can’t even remember. But I know that I am still livid that P&G dropped THE from The Guiding Light in 1977 and I’m still not over that decision.

Don’t Oh dear me for “we’re,” it’s damn autocorrect. And I put paragraphs up there but they didn’t show up!!!
