The Godfather Part III
I watched Godfather Part III for the first time yesterday. Every few years I’ll watch the first two parts back to back, but never watched the whole trilogy together until now But III was honestly a doozy in my opinion.
I understand now why a lot of people pretend like it doesn’t exist. I think the thing I disliked most was having Michael Corleone trying to do well and atone for his sins the whole movie, which felt really out of step from his character arc in the first two. I mean, the transformation of Michael from the beginning of the first movie to the end of the second one is so brilliant by Pacino, I can’t even describe to someone how good he is in those. IMO.
The whole thing is kinda pointless. It probably just shouldn’t have been made. I know Coppola needed money after financing some serious flops in the 80’s and I think he needed to pay some debts, so why not make a third movie.
And yes, Sofia Coppola really is THAT bad. Apparently Madonna lobbied hard for the part of Mary Corleone, and in all honesty even she is a better actress than Sofia and that’s saying a lot. I did watch the original theatrical version and there is now a directors cut available, but I’m not sure how you could improve this. It’s not a total disaster, but compared to the first two, it’s a big shit. IMO.

Godfather Part III pales against parts I and II. But it would have been near impossible to turn out a third masterpiece film of the same topic in part because the screenplay just can't compare to the first two. Never hire a relative to be in your film unless they are already have established acting credentials. The big screen is the last place someone should be training.

it looks awful from that one clip. It came out the same year as Goodfellas.

The new re-cut just moves things around and does not improve or clarify the original in any way, unless you're so detail obsessed you can actually distinguish between the two. Coppola loves to cut and re-cut his movies to sell them over and over again in all their different forms. I'm sick of him and his BS, like, make up your fucking mind already!

It was also edited and filmed too fast-paced. Kind of like "Godfather Lite" for the end-of-1980s movie-viewing crowds. The attraction of the first two was also their better paced, lighted, and grainier 1970s filming style. The younger family crew up-and-coming in the 3rd installment were of their later generational time and obviously more superficial and more into the image-bling thing, as well as third-generation, American-born spoiled brats. It was more a "Godfather" film on steroids. Also I don't think they gave Diane Keaton's returning character as much of a punch and storyline engrained into the film as I think they should have.

Sofia received two richly deserved Razzies for this. Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star.

I though the recut did improve the film a bit.
Maybe it's because I didn't hate it the first time around, despite its problems.
Naturally Sofia wasn't good, but even more so, Talia Shire shamefully overacted throughout the entire thing.
And there's one moment when Andy Garcia (who seems high during much of the film) yells his lines so loud, the result is hilarious.
I don't know what specifically was changed in the recut - other than shortening the end, when in the original Pacino seems to take forever to fall off that fucking chair - but in watching it recently I thought the movie was a little more enjoyable than I remembered.

The first two movies are overrated and the third one is underrated.

r8, the problem is, because a few prominent people call something amazing and something else terrible, everybody else seems to follow the party line. People who really think for themselves can see flaws and merits on their own terms.

The third one isn't that bad. It's not anywhere near as good as the first two, but it's not a disaster like it's made out to be. I agree with r7.

The reason people hate the third one, particularly the core audience of heterosexual men, is because Godfather 3 is essentially about failure and regret. The third two are about the attainment and wielding of power, which are things very appealing to straight guys (also seen in Scarface). The third one not has someone who suffers greatly because of his choices but is also physically repulsive, frail and diseased by that point, and also responsible for his family's decline. Godfather 3 is far from a bad movie, it's just a movie which doesn't inspire men.

Sorry for the typos, this is why we need an edit function: The reason people hate the third one, particularly the core audience of heterosexual men, is because Godfather 3 is essentially about failure and regret. I’m far from a heterosexual man but I think the first two films are masterpieces IMO. Perfect cast, great performances, music, lighting, script, etc. I can see why straight bros like movies like this and Goodfellas and Scarface (movies I also love) but I don’t watch these films and glorify the characters in any way. To me they are great American tragedies. Maybe it’s also partially due to my interest in true crime and I think organized crime type stories peak my interest as an extension of that. But I do get why some non straight people or women are turned off by the subject matter.
