R5, I suspect the Chinese test results get pre-approved by the CCP before release. Do you think the Chinese are going to let a little thing like a positive test keep one of their star athletes out of the games?

We already lost 2 of 3 matches in mixed curling, despite the Norwegian team being the second best ranked team in the world. This is depressing.

Vancouver Olympics: does anyone remember how Johnny and Evan refused to share the double room, so Johnny roomed with Tanith while Evan took the single?
"I didn't think it was allowable to stay with a girl," Weir said. "Tanith and I just seemed we would be a perfect match. We're old friends.
"I don't really get along with that many people on the team. I don't know that many people on the team well enough to live with, anyway. Tanith is definitely No. 1 for me."
"I was only in my room about five minutes, but it smells amazing," Belbin said yesterday of the male skater's advance decorating. "Johnny said it did not [smell good before]. He said it smelled like wet dogs.
"It's beautiful. There are aromatic candles, and he had Audrey Hepburn posters and motivational quotes on the wall. And in the bedroom, he put away all my clothes. ... He told me he didn't have time to find Cher [posters]. But he hoped to be able to get out and shop for those later."

4 out of the 6 best nordic combined athletes have tested positive. Fucking insane. This is turning into a joke. What's the point of the Olympics if all the best athletes can't compete? Like I said, we already potentially lost out on 3 gold medals in nordic combined because Riiber is positive. And we potentially lost a gold in cross country skiing because Krüger is positive. Not to mention you can't say shit about China without risking prison. We are just supposed to forget the violation of human rights and the genocide of the uigur people. The Chinese people don't have freedom of speech. Everyone should have boicotted, inlcuding Norway. I won't be too sad if corona fucks us in the ass. This is going to be even weirder and more depressing than Sochi and Tokyo--pandemic and authoritarianism all in one.
That said, last night was good for American figure skating fans. Nathan skated beautifully, not just capably, but with some actual elegance. He's never going to have the fluidity of Yuzuru Hanyu, but some of those quads just seemed to float. Hubbell/Donohue then had one of their "on" performances. It was nice to see them beat the overscored Russians. Knierem/Frazier holding on to third was also good. Really wasn't expecting the U.S. to even look like they were in contention for Gold. I'm still quite sure Russia will end up with it, but a solid Silver would be a nice win for the U.S. and that's looking doable.
Also nice is that the two leading American ice dance teams--Chock/Bates and Hubbell/Donohue said early on that they wanted both teams to compete in the team event. Unlike the bitchy Shib Sibs who petitioned to be the only dance team last time and iced out Hubbell/Donohue who were the U.S. champs at the time and a better team than the Shibutanis. This way, barring a crazy level of disaster (or COVID) both C/B and H/D will have Olympic medals to finish their careers.
Guess Karen Chen will be skating for the Ladies portion as Mariah Bell and Alyssa Liu have both had to recover from COVID and Liu has lost her triple axel. Bell was kind of an idiot at Nationals--after she won, she was doing meet and greets with fans in violation of the protocols. Hopefully, Karen C. will have one of her "on" performances and won't underrotate too much.
(And it would be nice if the figure-skating thread wasn't locked.)

R61, probably a good thing in the end for Chicago. The Olympics, summer or winter, are bloated events that cost a city, and governments at all levels in the host country, a ton of money. And they often leave behind white elephant infrastructure like the now unused buildings built for the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Rio in 2016.
The Olympics seemed like they were becoming something that only countries ruled by strongmen who don't have checks on their spending could afford (Putin for Sochi in 2014, Xi in Beijing in 2022) However, Paris in 2024, Milan/Cortina* in 2026, Los Angeles in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032 are committed to hosting future editions. At least with Paris and LA there is already substantial sports infrastructure so they don't have to build too many new facilities. Same with Salt Lake City if it hosts the winter games in either 2030 or 2034.
*Cortina is in a gorgeous part of Italy. Totally worth visiting the area if you ever get a chance.

This Olympics has a dark vibe, with Putin showing up and being feted by Xi while massing troops and weapons on Ukraine’s borders, and of course everyone on edge about Covid (in the country where the virus originated.) And athletes being told to bring burner phones because China spies on and monitors everyone.. I heard they have all been told to assume their rooms are bugged too. China is truly evil.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 5, 2022 2:38 AM |

I was curious as to why Beijing was holding the 2022 olympics and which cities they beat out! the information down below is very telling! the IOC is a piece of shit organization too!......
The bidding calendar was announced by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in October 2012, with the application deadline set for 14 November 2013. The IOC Executive Board reviewed the bids from all applicant cities on 7 July 2014 and selected three cities, Oslo (Norway), Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China), as the final candidates.[6]
Several Olympic committees withdrew their applications during the bidding process, citing the high costs or the lack of local support and funding for hosting the Games.[7] The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports which had proposed hosting the games in Oslo, which had been considered the clear frontrunner, withdrew after its application to the Norwegian parliament for funding of the proposed Olympics was rejected. Public reception to the Olympic movement's application for funding had been highly negative due to cost concerns after the cost overruns of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and especially revelations about a series of hospitality-related demands that the IOC had reportedly made. The demands notably included "diva-like demands for luxury treatment" for the IOC members themselves, such as special lanes on all roads only to be used by IOC members and cocktail reception at the Royal Palace with drinks paid for by the royal family. The IOC also "demanded control over all advertising space throughout Oslo" to be used exclusively by IOC's sponsors, something that is not possible in Norway because Norway is a liberal democracy where the government doesn't own or control "all advertising space throughout Oslo" and has no authority to give a foreign private organization exclusive use of a city and the private property within it.[8] Several commentators pointed out that such demands were unheard of in a western democracy; Slate described the IOC as a "notoriously ridiculous organization run by grifters and hereditary aristocrats."[9][10][11][12]
Beijing was selected as the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics after beating Almaty by four votes on 31 July 2015 at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

And more particularly why was Putin there at all? Russian athletes are only able to compete for ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) due to Russia’s appalling track record with PEDs, rather than under the Russian flag.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 5, 2022 4:44 AM |
Tried to watch all the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in the past several decades.
Have to say, this was the worst one I’ve seen. After living in China, the perfectionistic, coordinated movements of their groups were not evident in the choreographed dances: they were sloppy and all over the place. The bird’s nest stadium was unattractive with a bunch of techno, tacky light shows.
It apparently was freezing cold.* They showed clips of Putin in the stands sleeping during the parade of countries (but of course standing for the “ROC” - not even officially recognized as Russia because they cheated.)
Lastly, Savannah Guthrie announced they had been informed by China that the lighting of the Olympic cauldron would produce something so unique and unprecedented in the 100+ year history of the modern Olympics. But basically, the flame lighter was just placed in the center of a giant snowflake. It was a nothing burger and we found it hugely unappealing and kept waiting for something....anything....else to occur.
The only thing that was (in)flamed was the big metaphorical finger to the world when China had a minority athlete (that is reportedly persecuted in the country) place the flame stick in the ugly snowflake.
I feel for the athletes that have this as their Olympic experience.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 5, 2022 5:01 AM |
R86, the whole situation with the Russian athletes is idiotic. If the IOC wants to make a statement re: flagrant cheating/doping, ban their athletes. Not this stupid slap on the wrist of "Olympic athletes representing Russia."

Was enjoying watching the cross country skiing. Then they did a twenty minute PSA on how the American persevered despite suffering from an eating disorder. Stunning and bravely of course.
As if I give a fuck about that.
More sports, please.

Why did we send prissy, needy, ugly Jason Brown instead of a skater who can do a quad and at least have a shot at ending up in the top five?
He'll stumble all over the ice and fall down like he always does - artistic my ass.

The US has a good chance of getting a medal in tonight's womens slopestyle snowboarding.
The long track speed skaters are so fit. I was just watching the womens 3000m... while wearing a bathrobe and eating brownies.

And Vincent Zhao continues to show why he's not Nathan Chen. The tiny Japanese guy was fabulous. That's Japan's no. 3 while we get . . . Jason Brown . . . that Russian-American guy will be moving up the ranks pretty quickly after this, I think, since I don't expect Nathan Chen to stick around if he gets gold. I don't think his hip is going to take another four years.
Then there's Karen Chen, back to being a headcase. Wish Bradie Tennell wasn't out all season, she's not the most graceful skater, but the girl can land a triple-triple under pressure unlike the other US Ladies.

Shiffrin tanned out of giant slalom btw, NBC quickly kicked the event over to the Cock app. Another American, one not named Shiffrin, sits in 6th.
The demon inside me always cheers when NBC hype faves flame out. I can't help it.

Karen better not screw up the US team's medal chances. Why didn't Nathan skate the men's long program for US yesterday?
by Anonymous | reply 222 | February 7, 2022 2:25 AM |
The US is four points ahead of Japan now so not even Karen can screw this up. Kamila will win so, even with Japan in second and Karen in fifth, that is only three points difference so it's a done deal.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | February 7, 2022 2:38 AM |
Japan would need to win the free skate to knock US out of silver position. It's going to be ROC, USA, Japan in that order.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | February 7, 2022 2:39 AM |
^and Karen would need to tan again.

by Anonymous | reply 233 | February 7, 2022 3:01 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 234 | February 7, 2022 3:03 AM |
So had Nathan skated instead of Vincent and placed 1st in long and maybe Karen didn't screw up in short, US could have conceivably won gold.

by Anonymous | reply 246 | February 7, 2022 3:25 AM |
No, R240, interest in figure skating has dropped off in the US because no US girl can skate, literally, half that well. "Terrible music" is an interesting charge considering Bolero is literally a classic skating choice, and, as R241 pointed out, it was just fine with the world when Torvill and Dean used it. She doesn't just prep for big jumps (a la Elaine Zayak); she is also an incredible spinner and she has great extension coming out of her jumps. She is in a different sport than the rest of them. Jason Brown should skate so terribly.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | February 7, 2022 3:29 AM |
The Russian skating factory really produces great skaters but dispenses with them with great speed too.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | February 7, 2022 3:33 AM |
It's a boring routine and she does absolutely nothing with the music. It matters little since it's all about the jumps.
She's got those broad shoulders, you can tell she knows this is her only Olympic shot. In about a year she'll be another big, fridge-bodied bitch being passed around Russia's elite officials. Speaking of, how is little Alina Zagitova these days?

R244 Scherbakova has been inconsistent this season.
R249 Zagitova is doing ice shows and raking in the cash, but she has most definitely lost her jumping ability. She performed at the gala for the Russian nationals and bombed every jump.

Isn't this like the second Winter Olympics to have a team event for figure skating? I wonder how did figure skaters feel when the Olympics decided to do that? Were they happy because it's another chance to win a medal or pissed because it was yet something else to have to train for?
by Anonymous | reply 267 | February 7, 2022 4:47 AM |
They’re probably glad of the opportunity. They get to do their programs with not so much at stake and nerves will have calmed by the time they compete individually.
If the team does well, they have a shot at a medal. Whereas in the individual performance they might not get near the top 3 positions.
Chen has her silver medal. In the individual competition, she’s never gonna be in the top 3.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | February 7, 2022 5:09 AM |
It's probably been asked before so I'll apologize in advance but how did curling get to be an Olympic sport? Granted most sports are a combination of skill and athleticism but how much of an afhlete do you have to be? Still appreciate the eye candy though.

Woke up to ZERO new medals. Our favorites keep failing. First Klæbo, then Kleveland and now Kilde. Fuck this shit. 2 days since our last gold and the cheating Russians are now ahead of us in medals. I'm disgusted.

Vincent Zhao tested positive for COVID. Good thing he got in on the team event with that mediocre FS and nabbed the silver because it looks like he'll be out for the men's individual. Ilia Malinin is the first alternate. Is he actually in Beijing? He did a great skate at Nationals.

R269, actually, curling is pretty active physically. All that up and down and squatting would wear on your back and knees, and, god knows the sweeping part is damn hard work. Any time they show some reporter trying it out, they are winded just doing it once and only half-assed at that. I love archery in the summer as well, but it is a lot less physically taxing than curling. Hell, even golf is a lot less physically taxing.
by Anonymous | reply 284 | February 7, 2022 1:35 PM |
In golf the players get driven on a cart from hile to hole. Talk about physically undemanding.

The downhill ski course was both beautiful and scary! all those rugged mountains and the landscape and going down hill at nearly 90 miles a hour! holy crap! The athletes are "pros" of course, but I don't see how any of them could keep their eyes on the course when you look out at that horizon and mountains!....
I didn't watch the end of the competition, but who was that handsome dark haired blue eyed skier who was in first place for the longest time? I don't think he was the eventually winner. but I noticed the camera loved lingering on his face in close up! ...

R278 They can’t bring Malinin in to replace Zhou anymore. Once a skater has skated in the team event, he can’t be replaced. Also, once the draw happens for the men’s short program, the skater cannot be replaced. Both are true in Zhou’s case.

I agree r283. Article is 4 yrs old but main reasons seem to be: new scoring system (more emphasis on technical points vs. artistry), non-centralized coaching system, competition w/gymnastics (thanks Simone) since they draw similar stature young girls, and the fact Russian skaters are simply amazing technically.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | February 7, 2022 4:18 PM |

I used to be a huge skating fan but the "new' scoring system emphasizes racking up points with jumps. It's boring seeing skater after skater basically doing the same routine--same jumps, same tricks.
There's no spontaneity. No one just sticks in a jump to make up for a previous failed jump because routines are so tightly choreographed.
BORING!

That just isn't true, R342. It's just a snarky/bitchy thing to say about "the good old days." They aren't necessarily doing any MORE jumps than they used to, it's just that the jumps they are doing now are more difficult. There is even a rule that limits the number of jumps one can perform.

Chen is musical And he consistently picks interesting music to which to skate, which puts him a cut above someone like Boyang. What he lacks is flexibility. I always feel like his lower back is tight and that results in less flow in his choreography. Brandie Tennell has a similar issue.
Thing about Eileen Gao is that she's American born, raised and train and she's competing for a country whose human rights record is so appalling that several countries, including the US are doing a diplomatic boycott. It's not like Keegan Messing or Piper Gilles skating for Canada, there's something a little gross about competing for China during this game, particularly since Gao, unlike that little figure skater, could have gotten to the Olympics without doing so.
I'd feel the same way about a Russian American competing for Russia.

I’m from the US but had an intense dislike for Yuko Kavaguti, who gave up her Japanese citizenship to skate pairs for Russia under Tamara Moskvina’s tutelage. Tiki’s last name was Kawaguchi, but she changed that as well to fit the Cyrillic mold! Ugh i couldn’t stand her.
Other than that one, I don’t mind when athletes switch.

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are very cute together and really know their stuff; plus they make it all pretty interesting and specific. However, if you overlook that giant heart on Johnny's shirt tonight, didn't you think he looked almost like Rachel Maddow? Is that the look he was going for?

R281, the last US lady who was truly competitive for world/Olympic titles was Sasha Cohen in 2010. Liu could've been the next, but puberty and drama with her overbearing dad haven't been kind to her thus far.
Shoma and his coach are cute together. Chen will win the title unless he makes a several mistakes in the free. I expect Hanyu to compete one more season after the Olympics to go to the world event in Japan next year. I'm heartbroken Vincent couldn't compete because of covid, what a shitty way to go out where you like his skating or now.

R403, Really, is the US currently detaining a million members of an ethnic minority and forbidding them to practice their religion? How about forced sterilization?
Funny, your kind of what-about-ism is straight out of the old Russian propaganda handbook.
R408--Gu's from San Francisco, where she attended a private school and plans to attend her mother's alma mater--Stanford. So, no, she's hardly been through a tough childhood filled with threats to her well-being. And it's not like she's planning to spend her life, or even, from the sounds of it, much time in China.
Nathan Chen, Karen Chen, Vincent Zhao, Alyssa Liu all have Chinese-born parents, but none of them have chosen to skate for China. I suspect Gu will regret it since she shows every sign of planning to continue living in the U.S.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | February 8, 2022 7:39 AM |
Gu. should just say she represents China for the $.Please spare the world the inspirational bs. China is a true authoritarian state so it’s all very gross. She has some deals with US companies too. Do they really want her as the face of their brand? Is she going to give up her U S passport?
by Anonymous | reply 417 | February 8, 2022 7:56 AM |
R416 The endorsement deals Eileen Gu currently has in China beat all those American combined (Nathan , Karen, Vincent...) and she is a household name in China, if she had stayed in the US, I doubt many American would know who she is.
Naomi Osaka chose to represent Japan instead of the US, her dad told her she would be better off in Japan, and he is right. Eileen Gu and her family made the same decision, she now has a much bigger career in China.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | February 8, 2022 8:07 AM |
R416 Oh, I really doubt Gu will regret anything. Americans have a short memory about the Olympics and it’s not as if she’s doping or doing anything illegal. Athletes country hop all the time, like Bubba, the “Irish” skier from America, whose only connection to Ireland was the fact he was born there while his father had a temporary job.
I find it distasteful to country hop like that, but we all know she’ll be laughing her way to the bank. Maybe she’d get a Wheaties box here and an ad in some sports magazine. In China, she’s on every billboard and in every magazine. But what’s really fucked up is that US companies like Red Bull, Tiffany and Co, Victoria’s Secret, Estee Lauder, and Cadillac have all signed her up for endorsement deals, too. America loves to celebrate assholes and sellouts.
by Anonymous | reply 419 | February 8, 2022 8:22 AM |
R417 Rumor is she had to give up her US citizenship as China doesn’t allow dual. Slate has a link about that and how she deleted that tidbit from her bio.
It’s confirmed that the figure skater Beverly Zhu (oh, excuse me, Zhu Yi) renounced her US citizenship. What’s rich is that after her dismal performance in the team event, the Chinese on Weibo are eviscerating her, complaining that she took the spot away from a girl who was actually born, raised and training in China but came from humble means and didn’t have the resources that Zhu had.

I'm not sure minors can give up their citizenship, but if Gu did and plans to stay in the U.S. she gave herself a major tax headache.
R420, Belbin had an American father. I also cut pairs and dance teams some slack because it's hard to find a partner. It's a small pool of talent. But Belbin did move to the U.S., trained here and stayed here. Gu plans to stay in the United States and go to Stanford.
Ice dancer Tim Kuleto is American born, but skated for Japan. However, he moved there, married his Japanese partner and actually interrupted his training in order to establish residency.
Gu wants to live in America, train in American, attend an elite American university and pull in Chinese money. She's no role model.

Interesting thread on Gu from an article in the Economist. China tried to recruit Alyssa Liu first, but her father, a Chinese dissident (and gay--he's sort of the ultimate skating dad) said no way.
Gu's all in on the Chinese propaganda, but has posted in support of Black Lives Matter. Doesn't seem to have said a word in support of Hong Kong protesters though. Funny that.

I am curious who Eileen Gu's American father is. Why do I get the feeling that he's some billionaire white guy who was married at the time of conception? We all know how Asian women are. Eileen's mother was on a student visa when she came here.
I think Gu will come to regret getting into bed with China, pun intended. Look at tennis player Peng Shuai, forced into a sexual relationship with some old guy who was high on the food chain. She's a prisoner in China. What makes you think Gu will be able to dodge that? China also demands a lot more of its famous people in terms of money. She'll pay a shit ton in taxes to both the US and China.
If Gu really did give up her US citizenship, and it's a question as she refuses to answer, she's a fool. She'll be a slave to China and as anti-Chinese sentiment grows in the US, no one will care.

CCP officials made the now-retired Peng Shuai sit and watch Gu yesterday before they disappear her for the rest of her life. Sad.
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai sat with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and watched American-born Chinese freeskier Eileen Gu win gold at the women’s big air event Tuesday.
Peng appeared a day after delivering a controlled interview in Beijing that touched on sexual assault allegations she made against a former high-ranking member of China’s ruling Communist Party. Her answers — delivered in front of a Chinese Olympic official — left unanswered questions about her well-being and what exactly happened.
Bach said he and Peng spoke with athletes at the Big Air Shougang venue for about 30 minutes, and the pair was seen together in the stands.
Bach said Peng told him that she was going into quarantine later Tuesday and planned to exit the closed Olympic coronavirus bubble. He was not sure if she planned to return for any more Olympic events.
Peng, a local star who has encouraged Chinese girls and women to take up tennis, watched as Gu formally ascended to a similar position with her first Olympic gold medal.
An 18-year-old born in San Francisco, Gu decided in 2019 to compete for China at the Beijing Games, spurning Team USA in the process. Gu, whose mother is Chinese, has said repeatedly that her goal is to be a role model for young female athletes in China.
Gu sidestepped a question about whether she shared concerns from the international community about Peng’s well being. She said he was “really happy” Peng attended and honored that a star from a major sport like tennis came to see “niche sports like freeskiing.”
“I’m really grateful that she’s, yeah, happy and healthy and out here doing her thing again,” Gu said.
Peng’s interview with French sports newspaper L’Equipe and an announcement that Bach met Peng for dinner this weekend seemed aimed at allaying sustained international concerns about the three-time Olympian and former No. 1-ranked tennis doubles player. Fears for Peng’s safety have threatened to overshadow the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Peng told L’Equipe that the concerns were the result of “an enormous misunderstanding.” But the format of the interview appeared to limit follow-ups about the allegations and their aftermath.
L’Equipe asked Peng about sexual assault allegations that sparked the controversy in November. The allegations were quickly scrubbed from her verified account on leading Chinese social media platform Weibo. She subsequently dropped out of public view for a while. That led to “where is Peng Shuai?” questions online and from players and fans outside of China, in part because the country has a history of disappearing people who run afoul of its leaders.
In her lengthy post, Peng wrote that Zhang Gaoli, a former vice premier and member of the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, had forced her to have sex despite repeated refusals. Her post also said they had sex once seven years ago, and that she developed romantic feelings for him after that. Zhang has not commented on the accusation.
“Originally, I buried all this in my heart,” she wrote. “Why would you even come find me again, take me to your house and force me and you to have sexual relations?”

Gu “made the right decision”? Greed? Is it only all about the $$$$$$$?
Sure everything looks good from the outside in China. It’s the behind the scenes stuff that is a nightmare.
Trust me, living in China is no walk in the park. If this girl gave away her US citizenship for Chinese citizenship, there is a huge price. It comes at a cost: control. No matter how lauded and praised she is, if she does not toe the CCP line (as other actors and athletes have failed to do), her life will no longer be her own.
Now she is basking in the limelight, but is it worth the risk of becoming a pawn to China?
I would never, ever give up Western citizenship for China. After having lived there, that was the only thing that provided respite from the horrors of the treatment of their own citizens.
by Anonymous | reply 459 | February 8, 2022 4:37 PM |
CCP was tired of dealing with the Peng Shuai controversy so they forced her to retire. Now that she won't be expected at tournaments or appear in any media appearances, problem solved. The only other option was to suicide her. We'll never see her again, and it's all because she spoke out against a Party member and his sexual assaults. I'm sure if Eileen dares to step out of line, they'll pass her around to break her and she'll face the same fate. Freeskiing isn't even as high profile as tennis. She's in deep shit already and she doesn't even know it.

I don’t believe we are stating that the US is “high and mighty”. It has many issues, and could use some introspection.
The Trump Era(including the pandemic which was accelerated by Trump policies), collapse of infrastructure and many revered institutions has the roosters coming home to roost in the good ole USA.
That said, there is a continuum, and China and Russia are at one end and Western democracies at another.

Nobody really cared but he then he gave a bunch of dopey interviews abou how he was only Russian now and how incredible Putin was. Yeah, I don't think Gu understands the protection US citizenship offered her. For the bozoes doing the whataboutism evil-United-States thing, I'll just point out that if Harvey Weinstein had been a powerful producer raping Chinese actresses, you'd never have heard of it and he wouldn't be sitting in prison. You sure as hell couldn't post "Uyghur Lives Matter" on your Instagram feed without repercussions, let alone march in support of Uyghurs or Hong Kong students.
Being abroad is limited protection. Chinese students in the U.S. take it for granted that their social media is watched by the Chinese authorities.
As an American citizen being courted by the Chinese government, Gu is naive to think she won't be subject to a different set of expectations as a Chinese citizen. She gave up a powerful birthright and for what? A little more money? Because as a gold-medal winner for the U.S. who looks like a model, she'd have made plenty of money in the U.S. She'll make less here now because she sold out to a dictatorship.

Anyone here know enough about figure skating to say if Hanyu's missed jump in the men's short program was due to his hitting a rut or crack in the ice, or due to lack of concentration or technique? I hear the Fanyus are going apeshit over it.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | February 9, 2022 3:50 AM |
Did anybody notice the whole opening ceremony was a complete rip off of another olympics. Down to the footprint fireworks.
I can’t remember which olympics but I’m think it was the summer China olympics. Did they rip themselves off?
I seem to remember the same program, complete with scroll as a centerpiece

R497, Hanyu’s fans can be obsessive sometimes but it appears Hanyu had a hard fall in FS practice today and has generally seemed dejected/not himself. I’ve always liked his skating but I think the mistake may have been about more than a rut on the ice. He has repeated stress on his landing foot and maybe less control than he had in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | February 9, 2022 4:07 AM |
Yes, r504, but you should see what Alex Hall looks like.
by Anonymous | reply 506 | February 9, 2022 4:21 AM |
I don't buy the "rut" cause for Hanyu's missed quad. Wasn't he the first skater in the second half (as it were)?
I'm watching it again now. Nope, he simply hadn't built up the speed, energy, or position for that first quad.
Hanyu is a beautiful and graceful skater, though. And the remainder of his Short Program was superb.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | February 9, 2022 4:33 AM |
So are all the sports at the winter Olympic just variations of skating and skiing?
Oh, there’s luge! How thrilling..

[Quote] Hanyu is a beautiful and graceful skater, though. And the remainder of his Short Program was superb.
Overall he’s a greater skater than Chen. If he had hit his Short, he could have won again
by Anonymous | reply 509 | February 9, 2022 4:40 AM |
Yes, of course, Hanyu "could have." But recall that Nathan set a record for SP points.
Both men have multiple World Champioships. Olympics aside, the skaters are close in skill and artistry.
Their duel would have been the premier event. Ah, well.
by Anonymous | reply 510 | February 9, 2022 5:13 AM |
The last great duels were the Battle of the Brians & the Carmens in ‘88, everything since had either been anticlimactic, predictable, and-or rigged!

R495 True, there’s lots of country hopping but rarely do athletes renounce their US citizenship. Ideally, they’ll maintain dual citizenship. Gu (and Zhu) permanently gave up their US citizenship to become Chinese nationals.

by Anonymous | reply 517 | February 9, 2022 7:04 AM |
I assume the winners wanted to wear something Russian, like the bootleg flag armbands they wore on their Opening Ceremony outfits that were prohibited.
by Anonymous | reply 518 | February 9, 2022 7:09 AM |
I can’t with Nathan Chen and the flailing about. Can no one give him some lessons in posture, extension? His expression is non-existent.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | February 9, 2022 7:32 AM |
OMG Lindsey Jacob Ellis finally did it after she lost because she showboated at the finish all those years ago? And it's the first US Gold?
Damn, congrats to that persistent airhead.
Hanyu was a great skater, but he's 27 and had various injuries. He hasn't been competing much for that reason.
And a divot on the ice? Preventing someone if his caliber from doing a jump? I don't buy it. He popped it. Singles skating is just so hard on the body.
Nathan's a musical skater, not a dramatic one. He doesn't really play characters. I am rooting for him just because I don't think he can physically do this for another four years and he is an extraordinary skater.
Wonder what's up with the team award. If there's a drug test failure, it would be really weird for the US skaters to get Gold.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | February 9, 2022 8:44 AM |
R512 Yes he did. I'm very happy for him. You could tell how much it meant to him, he even cried. That first ski race was a disaster. Bolsjunov won by a lot. With the form Bolsjunov is in another gold will be next to impossible. This might be his one and only gold medal from this Olympics. That's why it was so important for him to win the sprint. I feel like if he doesn't get gold in the other races it's ok, because at least he got one, you know? Everything else is a bonus.

[quote]Guesses on the legal issue holding up the figure skating medal ceremony?
Russian doping, again. One of then failed the drug test before the event and ROC have been filibustering since. It's the reason they made the same skaters skate short and long - trying to compartmentalize when the rules say the whole team and possibly the federation is disqualified.
They'll cheat their way back in again.
by Anonymous | reply 523 | February 9, 2022 10:16 AM |
Russia is a fucking joke. Full of cheaters, drunks, and whores.
Nathan Chen is a wonderful skater bitch at R519. Flailing? Fuck you. You’re trying to gaslight and doing it badly.
by Anonymous | reply 524 | February 9, 2022 11:07 AM |
Y'all can judge Chen's "flailing" and not being "dramatic" for yourselves:
by Anonymous | reply 525 | February 9, 2022 12:13 PM |
Maybe it's just me, but I could never fathom living in the U.S. and then going to the olympics to compete for another country and walking in the ceremony under that other nation's flag and with people you don't even know, while you look on and see the U.S. flag and congregation!...
by Anonymous | reply 526 | February 9, 2022 12:22 PM |
And now, I say as a Weisenheimer, calibrate exactly how, in comparison, Hanyu is NOT "flailing" and is MORE "dramatic" (maybe he is, but then, he had just screwed up):
by Anonymous | reply 527 | February 9, 2022 12:22 PM |
R525, I give Nathan credit for doing a lot of hard work between 2018 and now, because then I didn’t like watching him, and now he has a precision to his movements that shows he cares about everything he’s doing on the ice enough to dedicate enormous amounts of time to practice and presentation. Yuzuru’s style will always look different than Nathan’s, just being who he is, but I don’t think he’s as well-trained as Nathan going into this one. He’s had depression, isolation, and injury that made him uncertain whether he would make it to Beijing up until a few months ago. So style aside, the qualities that depend on endless run-throughs are not as precise.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | February 9, 2022 12:33 PM |
For those complaining about Nathan's presentation, he'll never be like Jason (btw 528 has a good read.) or others viewed to have better "artistic impression", but from watching him over the years, he's made really significant progress. Fortunately for folks like him & Ilia, ISU has placed greater emphasis on more quantifiable elements, similar to FIG's adoption of open ended scoring in gymnastics.

We had two medal chances today. Got a gold medal in freestyle skiing and silver in nordic combined. Very happy about that. The silver in nordic combined was surprising. Our favorite Riiber tested positive, so he didn't compete. Graabak was more than a minute behind after the ski jump, but he is so incredibly fast in cross country skiing he actually managed to grab silver!

R538, the substance in her system was one that would enhance recovery time and allow her to train harder, and is also known as a substance that can mask other banned substances. I’m sure she trained as hard as humanly possible, with the encouragement of the adults in her life, because a gold medal would mean a stipend for life in Russia. To have to give up her whole childhood from the age of 3 or 4 training and not get anything from it would be horrible for her, but the system itself is horrible.

Doping a 15-year old girl figure skater is just gross and pathetic.
Someone mentioned upthread how Russian Figure skating has just used up and spit up these dainty little girls. They've had one brieft moment in the sun and then never again because of awful injuries, over-training, crushing anxiety, anorexia and now maybe doping.

I feel sorry for Valieva, but if this gets Eteri and her machine suspended, it's a very good thing for the sport. Eteri's wrecked Ladies figure skating with her disposable starved prepubescents who last one season. Think of the Golds that should have been won by Japanese skaters and the bronzes that would have been won by the occasional American woman.

The IOC won't do it of course, but ban Russia from next Olympics. Ban known cheating and doping coaches and administrators for life. The latter is important if the IOC really want to cut the systemic cheating. But then, Bach is out there legitimatizing the CCP's treatment of Peng Shuai.

The Russian doping scandal is the worst example of doping because it was state-sponsored. Government bureaucrats and the national olympic committee created a doping scheme that they implemented on a massive scale, even doping their paralympic athletes! The Russians even built a secret room at the testing control site in Sochi in 2014 to swap out the actual tainted samples with clean ones.
