The OFFICIAL DL Winter Olympics thread!

When does ladies figure skating start?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 601February 10, 2022 5:22 AM

Fuck that, I wanna see the mins. And the mins skiing.

by Anonymousreply 1February 3, 2022 11:45 AM

I'm boycotting the Chinese communists and their slave camps and the U.S. corporations who enable them.

by Anonymousreply 2February 3, 2022 12:02 PM

Every event is now biathlon. There will be shooters aimed at the skiers, skaters, lugers, curlers, bobsledders, etc. The shooter who hits the most targets wins! Exciting.

by Anonymousreply 3February 3, 2022 12:26 PM

I wanna see the mens speed skating! Those legs!! 🤤

by Anonymousreply 4February 3, 2022 1:13 PM

We already lost 3 potential gold medals in nordic combined because the best athlete in the world, who happens to be Norwegian, just tested positive. The Olympics is a fucking joke.

by Anonymousreply 5February 3, 2022 1:39 PM

R5, I suspect the Chinese test results get pre-approved by the CCP before release. Do you think the Chinese are going to let a little thing like a positive test keep one of their star athletes out of the games?

by Anonymousreply 6February 3, 2022 1:43 PM

We already lost 2 of 3 matches in mixed curling, despite the Norwegian team being the second best ranked team in the world. This is depressing.

by Anonymousreply 7February 3, 2022 1:52 PM

What hotties should we be looking out for?

by Anonymousreply 8February 3, 2022 2:03 PM

Nobody should be at the CHINESE Olympics right now. Fuck that country!

by Anonymousreply 9February 3, 2022 2:34 PM

Men’s figure skating team event short program starts tonight at 8:55 pm EST. Ladies and pairs SP team event is on 2/5…

by Anonymousreply 10February 3, 2022 6:15 PM

Does anyone watch team figure skating? It’s just a warm up to the individual and pairs competitions.

by Anonymousreply 11February 4, 2022 12:36 AM

For some skaters, it's their only realistic shot at a medal.

by Anonymousreply 12February 4, 2022 12:39 AM

I hate NBC for this political shit. Are we not able to escape from it ever? Just let us watch sports and enjoy.

by Anonymousreply 13February 4, 2022 12:40 AM

way to open Olympic coverage, NBC. Discussion about what a terrible country China is. They wouldn't have dared do it had the games been in Russia. Fuck politics.

by Anonymousreply 14February 4, 2022 12:52 AM

Yes, Americans, we told you want a terrible country China is, so go out and attack Asian=Americans, Chinese or not. After all, they all look alike. We have just given you permission. BTW, stay tuned for Nathen Chen.

by Anonymousreply 15February 4, 2022 12:54 AM

I'm not thrilled with China hosting these games, but apparently nobody else wanted them except for Almaty, Kazakhstan (and that country is a bit of a shitshow at the moment). I'm curious about the Opening Ceremonies though, and I'll watch figure skating just for the hell of it.

by Anonymousreply 16February 4, 2022 12:56 AM

Lipinski is wearing a prom dress.

by Anonymousreply 17February 4, 2022 12:57 AM

Oh, Johnny, elegant and over-the-top as always.

Love him, though.

She is wearing a prom dress.

by Anonymousreply 18February 4, 2022 1:00 AM

What in the hell does Lipsinka have to do with figure skating? Do all the other out male figure skaters have a famous female illusionist on their arm? I'm concerned about China's crackdown on effeminacy. Will they be safe?

The USA women's hockey team beat Finland this morning in convincing fashion. But lost one of their biggest stars in a pretty horrific injury. The broadcast picked up her screams of pain.

by Anonymousreply 24February 4, 2022 2:04 AM

The Canadian womens hockey team lost one of their players, too. She practically got knocked out in a game, had to be helped off.

by Anonymousreply 25February 4, 2022 2:07 AM

Nathan Chen is hot.

"That's an aggressive start there, Tanith"

by Anonymousreply 28February 4, 2022 2:56 AM

Vancouver Olympics: does anyone remember how Johnny and Evan refused to share the double room, so Johnny roomed with Tanith while Evan took the single?

"I didn't think it was allowable to stay with a girl," Weir said. "Tanith and I just seemed we would be a perfect match. We're old friends.

"I don't really get along with that many people on the team. I don't know that many people on the team well enough to live with, anyway. Tanith is definitely No. 1 for me."

"I was only in my room about five minutes, but it smells amazing," Belbin said yesterday of the male skater's advance decorating. "Johnny said it did not [smell good before]. He said it smelled like wet dogs.

"It's beautiful. There are aromatic candles, and he had Audrey Hepburn posters and motivational quotes on the wall. And in the bedroom, he put away all my clothes. ... He told me he didn't have time to find Cher [posters]. But he hoped to be able to get out and shop for those later."

4 out of the 6 best nordic combined athletes have tested positive. Fucking insane. This is turning into a joke. What's the point of the Olympics if all the best athletes can't compete? Like I said, we already potentially lost out on 3 gold medals in nordic combined because Riiber is positive. And we potentially lost a gold in cross country skiing because Krüger is positive. Fucking ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 37February 4, 2022 7:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 45February 4, 2022 2:12 PM

Bummer, that the parade of athletes everyone is wearing a mask! One of my favorite times to watch the olympics is to see the gorgeous hot men strutting into the stadiums for both the winter and summer games.. Always amazes me, just how many incredible looking men from nearly all the countries competing!....and yes, pretty females too...

Beijing will go down in history as the worst Olympics ever.... fake snow, cold as fuck, no spectators, lots of athletes testing positive and having their olympics ruined, wind conditions are horrible too. Not to mention you can't say shit about China without risking prison. We are just supposed to forget the violation of human rights and the genocide of the uigur people. The Chinese people don't have freedom of speech. Everyone should have boicotted, inlcuding Norway. I won't be too sad if corona fucks us in the ass. We have already lost two of our best athletes and now the athletes who are negative will compete in horrible conditions.

Wasn't Chicago sore about not getting the Olympics some years back? I don't know why they don't put in a bid for the 2030 Winter Games -- seeing as how nobody wants to host anymore, they're certain to get them.

by Anonymousreply 66February 4, 2022 7:29 PM

This is going to be even weirder and more depressing than Sochi and Tokyo--pandemic and authoritarianism all in one.

That said, last night was good for American figure skating fans. Nathan skated beautifully, not just capably, but with some actual elegance. He's never going to have the fluidity of Yuzuru Hanyu, but some of those quads just seemed to float. Hubbell/Donohue then had one of their "on" performances. It was nice to see them beat the overscored Russians. Knierem/Frazier holding on to third was also good. Really wasn't expecting the U.S. to even look like they were in contention for Gold. I'm still quite sure Russia will end up with it, but a solid Silver would be a nice win for the U.S. and that's looking doable.

Also nice is that the two leading American ice dance teams--Chock/Bates and Hubbell/Donohue said early on that they wanted both teams to compete in the team event. Unlike the bitchy Shib Sibs who petitioned to be the only dance team last time and iced out Hubbell/Donohue who were the U.S. champs at the time and a better team than the Shibutanis. This way, barring a crazy level of disaster (or COVID) both C/B and H/D will have Olympic medals to finish their careers.

Guess Karen Chen will be skating for the Ladies portion as Mariah Bell and Alyssa Liu have both had to recover from COVID and Liu has lost her triple axel. Bell was kind of an idiot at Nationals--after she won, she was doing meet and greets with fans in violation of the protocols. Hopefully, Karen C. will have one of her "on" performances and won't underrotate too much.

(And it would be nice if the figure-skating thread wasn't locked.)

by Anonymousreply 67February 4, 2022 7:39 PM

R61, probably a good thing in the end for Chicago. The Olympics, summer or winter, are bloated events that cost a city, and governments at all levels in the host country, a ton of money. And they often leave behind white elephant infrastructure like the now unused buildings built for the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Rio in 2016.

The Olympics seemed like they were becoming something that only countries ruled by strongmen who don't have checks on their spending could afford (Putin for Sochi in 2014, Xi in Beijing in 2022) However, Paris in 2024, Milan/Cortina* in 2026, Los Angeles in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032 are committed to hosting future editions. At least with Paris and LA there is already substantial sports infrastructure so they don't have to build too many new facilities. Same with Salt Lake City if it hosts the winter games in either 2030 or 2034.

*Cortina is in a gorgeous part of Italy. Totally worth visiting the area if you ever get a chance.

by Anonymousreply 68February 4, 2022 7:43 PM

This Olympics has a dark vibe, with Putin showing up and being feted by Xi while massing troops and weapons on Ukraine’s borders, and of course everyone on edge about Covid (in the country where the virus originated.) And athletes being told to bring burner phones because China spies on and monitors everyone.. I heard they have all been told to assume their rooms are bugged too. China is truly evil.

by Anonymousreply 80February 5, 2022 2:38 AM

The dark vibe isn’t helped by the venues being comprised of fake snow, surrounded by brown snowless hills.

Beijing is very cold in Winter but it’s in the middle of the driest zone in China.

I was curious as to why Beijing was holding the 2022 olympics and which cities they beat out! the information down below is very telling! the IOC is a piece of shit organization too!......

The bidding calendar was announced by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in October 2012, with the application deadline set for 14 November 2013. The IOC Executive Board reviewed the bids from all applicant cities on 7 July 2014 and selected three cities, Oslo (Norway), Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China), as the final candidates.[6]

Several Olympic committees withdrew their applications during the bidding process, citing the high costs or the lack of local support and funding for hosting the Games.[7] The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports which had proposed hosting the games in Oslo, which had been considered the clear frontrunner, withdrew after its application to the Norwegian parliament for funding of the proposed Olympics was rejected. Public reception to the Olympic movement's application for funding had been highly negative due to cost concerns after the cost overruns of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and especially revelations about a series of hospitality-related demands that the IOC had reportedly made. The demands notably included "diva-like demands for luxury treatment" for the IOC members themselves, such as special lanes on all roads only to be used by IOC members and cocktail reception at the Royal Palace with drinks paid for by the royal family. The IOC also "demanded control over all advertising space throughout Oslo" to be used exclusively by IOC's sponsors, something that is not possible in Norway because Norway is a liberal democracy where the government doesn't own or control "all advertising space throughout Oslo" and has no authority to give a foreign private organization exclusive use of a city and the private property within it.[8] Several commentators pointed out that such demands were unheard of in a western democracy; Slate described the IOC as a "notoriously ridiculous organization run by grifters and hereditary aristocrats."[9][10][11][12]

Beijing was selected as the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics after beating Almaty by four votes on 31 July 2015 at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

by Anonymousreply 83February 5, 2022 3:37 AM

Why was that asshole Putin sitting by himself?

It was funny to see, actually. Ping seemed by himself as well.

Fucking assholes, the both of them.

by Anonymousreply 84February 5, 2022 4:01 AM

There is a Holocaust in China. BOYCOTT.

by Anonymousreply 85February 5, 2022 4:12 AM

And more particularly why was Putin there at all? Russian athletes are only able to compete for ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) due to Russia’s appalling track record with PEDs, rather than under the Russian flag.

by Anonymousreply 86February 5, 2022 4:44 AM

Tried to watch all the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in the past several decades.

Have to say, this was the worst one I’ve seen. After living in China, the perfectionistic, coordinated movements of their groups were not evident in the choreographed dances: they were sloppy and all over the place. The bird’s nest stadium was unattractive with a bunch of techno, tacky light shows.

It apparently was freezing cold.* They showed clips of Putin in the stands sleeping during the parade of countries (but of course standing for the “ROC” - not even officially recognized as Russia because they cheated.)

Lastly, Savannah Guthrie announced they had been informed by China that the lighting of the Olympic cauldron would produce something so unique and unprecedented in the 100+ year history of the modern Olympics. But basically, the flame lighter was just placed in the center of a giant snowflake. It was a nothing burger and we found it hugely unappealing and kept waiting for something....anything....else to occur.

The only thing that was (in)flamed was the big metaphorical finger to the world when China had a minority athlete (that is reportedly persecuted in the country) place the flame stick in the ugly snowflake.

I feel for the athletes that have this as their Olympic experience.

by Anonymousreply 87February 5, 2022 5:01 AM

R86, the whole situation with the Russian athletes is idiotic. If the IOC wants to make a statement re: flagrant cheating/doping, ban their athletes. Not this stupid slap on the wrist of "Olympic athletes representing Russia."

by Anonymousreply 88February 5, 2022 5:04 AM

I think people need to cut China some slack. They’re only imprisoning the weaker Muslims, not the stronger ones.

by Anonymousreply 89February 5, 2022 5:25 AM

So sickeningly sweet—children and snowflakes. I can’t believe putting the runner’s torch in a snowflake is what they had planned for the flame. So bleh.

by Anonymousreply 90February 5, 2022 5:40 AM

I was downright shocked during the kids’ segment with the light up birds. Several of the children were wearing lipstick and looked like whores!

Some of these sports are both boring and mesmerizing to watch at the same time. #Luge #SkiJumping

by Anonymousreply 122February 5, 2022 7:09 PM

So the lady speed-skaters didn’t seem to have the huge thighs and behinds that characterize their sport.

Haven’t seen the men yet…

🤔🤔

by Anonymousreply 123February 5, 2022 7:48 PM

What happens to the host country athletes that don’t being home the gold.

I shudder to think.

by Anonymousreply 124February 5, 2022 7:52 PM

I'm watching tape delayed cross country skiing on the BBC!

by Anonymousreply 125February 5, 2022 7:54 PM

Here are the legs of a Danish speed skater.

by Anonymousreply 126February 5, 2022 8:07 PM

Was enjoying watching the cross country skiing. Then they did a twenty minute PSA on how the American persevered despite suffering from an eating disorder. Stunning and bravely of course.

As if I give a fuck about that.

More sports, please.

by Anonymousreply 127February 5, 2022 8:10 PM

Why did we send prissy, needy, ugly Jason Brown instead of a skater who can do a quad and at least have a shot at ending up in the top five?

He'll stumble all over the ice and fall down like he always does - artistic my ass.

by Anonymousreply 128February 5, 2022 8:14 PM

That’s pretty horrific, actually, R126. 😱😳

Have we won anything yet?

by Anonymousreply 129February 5, 2022 8:21 PM

[quote]After 1 full day of competition, zero medals for the United States.

The US has a good chance of getting a medal in tonight's womens slopestyle snowboarding.

The long track speed skaters are so fit. I was just watching the womens 3000m... while wearing a bathrobe and eating brownies.

by Anonymousreply 130February 5, 2022 8:57 PM

The US definitely doesnt dominate like they do in the summer games.

by Anonymousreply 131February 5, 2022 8:58 PM

norway, germany and canada led the medal table in korea.

by Anonymousreply 132February 5, 2022 9:01 PM

R132 Might as well just call it the White Peoples’ Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 133February 5, 2022 9:04 PM

Is it anyone's fault that the countries and people that mostly do these snow/ice sports are white? Btw theres many good asian countries too.

by Anonymousreply 134February 5, 2022 9:08 PM

R134, yes, you would expect northern European countries to do well. But it's also true that winter sports tend to be $$$-intensive.

by Anonymousreply 135February 5, 2022 9:16 PM

One of the US snowboarders is from Westport, CT. Tell me you're rich without telling me you're rich.

by Anonymousreply 136February 5, 2022 9:20 PM

Those legs at R126 are off the chart. Wow. He has a cute face as well.

by Anonymousreply 137February 5, 2022 9:21 PM

R135 true. A lot more expensive and access to facilities are too. Many summer sports you can improve at for cheaper costs.

by Anonymousreply 138February 5, 2022 9:35 PM

Oh thank you, R126!

by Anonymousreply 139February 5, 2022 9:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 144February 5, 2022 10:53 PM

R133 what would you call the finals of the men’s and women’s 100m and 200m sprints and 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relays at the Summer Olympics?

by Anonymousreply 145February 5, 2022 10:57 PM

He he, R144. Actually it's the wokesters who are the most anti-Asian.

Legs are nice, but let's see those muscular asses of the speed skaters.

by Anonymousreply 146February 5, 2022 11:43 PM

Johnny Weir looks fucking ridiculous! She’s always annoyed me.

by Anonymousreply 147February 6, 2022 12:47 AM

Fuck these Chinese pieces of shit. I hope they all die of COVID, Communist assholes.

by Anonymousreply 148February 6, 2022 12:49 AM

I just saw Adam Rippon sitting with the other skaters from the USA, waving at the camera. Why is he there? Is he coaching someone?

by Anonymousreply 149February 6, 2022 12:51 AM

Adam coaches Mariah Bell.

by Anonymousreply 150February 6, 2022 1:11 AM

[quote] [R61], probably a good thing in the end for Chicago. The Olympics, summer or winter, are bloated events that cost a city, and governments at all levels in the host country, a ton of money.

Doesn't Chicago have most of the sports facilities and venues that could accommodate a Winter Olympics? It sure as hell gets cold enough to host a Winter Olympics out there.

by Anonymousreply 151February 6, 2022 1:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 160February 6, 2022 1:49 AM

The US has a medal in women's slopstyle, either gold or silver. One rider left to go.

by Anonymousreply 161February 6, 2022 1:50 AM

The US women would medal in something called 'slopstyle.'

by Anonymousreply 162February 6, 2022 1:51 AM

China qualified for the team figure skating final over Georgia, despite having the same final score (22). Did they say why?

by Anonymousreply 163February 6, 2022 1:52 AM

USA wins silver in slopestyle.

by Anonymousreply 164February 6, 2022 1:53 AM

^The tie was broken by whichever team got higher scores in two of the events so far (I don't think they named the events).

by Anonymousreply 165February 6, 2022 1:53 AM

The Austrian men's ski team is hot (playing cards).

by Anonymousreply 166February 6, 2022 1:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 172February 6, 2022 2:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 176February 6, 2022 2:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 185February 6, 2022 6:15 AM

And our shitty day continues. The cross country ski favorite Klæbo is already 42 seconds behind the two in the lead. We might finish this day with no medals😭

by Anonymousreply 186February 6, 2022 6:31 AM

Finally some good news! Norway won over Sweden in mixed doubles curling. But they are still one place from a semifinal. They are 5th now.

by Anonymousreply 187February 6, 2022 6:47 AM

Where’s Chris Madzder at!

by Anonymousreply 188February 6, 2022 6:50 AM

Scandal in cross country skiing today. ZERO medals to Norway. Our shit day continues. First Kleveland not being able to qualify for slopestyle then no medals in our national sport cross country skiing. Only bright light today was the curling win over Sweden.

by Anonymousreply 189February 6, 2022 7:36 AM

R186 Not Klæbo’s day

by Anonymousreply 190February 6, 2022 8:15 AM

And Vincent Zhao continues to show why he's not Nathan Chen. The tiny Japanese guy was fabulous. That's Japan's no. 3 while we get . . . Jason Brown . . . that Russian-American guy will be moving up the ranks pretty quickly after this, I think, since I don't expect Nathan Chen to stick around if he gets gold. I don't think his hip is going to take another four years.

Then there's Karen Chen, back to being a headcase. Wish Bradie Tennell wasn't out all season, she's not the most graceful skater, but the girl can land a triple-triple under pressure unlike the other US Ladies.

by Anonymousreply 191February 6, 2022 8:26 AM

We got bronze in speed skating. Finally some good news! We might not have gotten a medal in cross country skiing, which was pathetic, but a bronze in speed skating is amazing!

by Anonymousreply 192February 6, 2022 9:21 AM

Bad conditions in ski jumping and not even top 10 after the first half. This day sucks. We will finish today with one bronze. Not even a gold medal in our national sport. The cheating Russsians beat us. Fuck this shit. This Olympics is turning into one of our worst ever.

by Anonymousreply 193February 6, 2022 10:53 AM

I'm convinced that fucking Russian cross country skier is a cheater. It's not that he won the race today, but HOW we won it. He wasn't tired. He won by like 2 minutes. When it's THAT unbelievable, you can bet your ass there is something more behind it. No way is he clean. No fucking way.

by Anonymousreply 211February 6, 2022 9:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 212February 7, 2022 1:04 AM

Haha, fuck the Russians.

😛

by Anonymousreply 213February 7, 2022 1:19 AM

Funny how everyone else's family is watching from the US except Mikaela Shiffrin's mom, who is somehow in Beijing.

Shiffrin tanned out of giant slalom btw, NBC quickly kicked the event over to the Cock app. Another American, one not named Shiffrin, sits in 6th.

The demon inside me always cheers when NBC hype faves flame out. I can't help it.

by Anonymousreply 214February 7, 2022 1:37 AM

Watching events on the Peacock app is 100x better. No inane frau shit, just the sport with all of the competitors shown.

by Anonymousreply 215February 7, 2022 1:48 AM

R214 I think the announcer said she’s her daughter’s coach?

by Anonymousreply 216February 7, 2022 1:52 AM

The pairs and ice dancers are amazing. The men pick the women up and toss them in the air like dolls. That one where they both fell was scary though.

by Anonymousreply 217February 7, 2022 1:54 AM

Shiffrin didn't medal. R214? Too bad.

I actually like her. She's got spunk.

by Anonymousreply 218February 7, 2022 1:54 AM

R215 Are the medal ceremonies featured on the Cock?

by Anonymousreply 219February 7, 2022 1:59 AM

An American dance team beat the ROC damce team! Bricks will be shit!

by Anonymousreply 220February 7, 2022 2:20 AM

Who is the idiot who designed those hideous outfits for Chock and Bates?

by Anonymousreply 221February 7, 2022 2:22 AM

Karen better not screw up the US team's medal chances. Why didn't Nathan skate the men's long program for US yesterday?

by Anonymousreply 222February 7, 2022 2:25 AM

The US is four points ahead of Japan now so not even Karen can screw this up. Kamila will win so, even with Japan in second and Karen in fifth, that is only three points difference so it's a done deal.

by Anonymousreply 223February 7, 2022 2:38 AM

Japan would need to win the free skate to knock US out of silver position. It's going to be ROC, USA, Japan in that order.

by Anonymousreply 224February 7, 2022 2:39 AM

^and Karen would need to tan again.

by Anonymousreply 225February 7, 2022 2:41 AM

How ironic when Americans complain about how the Chinese treat Uighurs

by Anonymousreply 226February 7, 2022 2:42 AM

Thanks for explanation. So if Kamila fails miserably which wont happen, US will get bronze instead. Now I can go to bed & watch replays.

by Anonymousreply 227February 7, 2022 2:43 AM

Kamila could always injure herself on one of her jumps. Never know what could happen.

by Anonymousreply 228February 7, 2022 2:50 AM

Question: do all members of the skating team get a medal, or just the ones who compete?

by Anonymousreply 229February 7, 2022 2:51 AM

All of her damn jumps are under-rotated. WTF is her problem?

by Anonymousreply 230February 7, 2022 2:52 AM

Chen was lovely 🥰

by Anonymousreply 231February 7, 2022 2:56 AM

Karen Chen got it done.

by Anonymousreply 232February 7, 2022 2:57 AM

R229, only the ones who skate. For instance, not Jason Brown.

by Anonymousreply 233February 7, 2022 3:01 AM

Thanks, R233. That sucks for Mariah, not getting to skate in this. There's no way she could have done worse than Karen in the short.

by Anonymousreply 234February 7, 2022 3:03 AM

So had Nathan skated instead of Vincent and placed 1st in long and maybe Karen didn't screw up in short, US could have conceivably won gold.

by Anonymousreply 235February 7, 2022 3:04 AM

Schizas beating Karen Chen score-wise is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 236February 7, 2022 3:06 AM

Is Chris Knierim a cuckold, no longer skating with his wife, but seeing her perform with another man?

by Anonymousreply 237February 7, 2022 3:07 AM

Canada's male skater really fucked them over big time. They would be medal contenders if he hadn't tanned both of his programs.

by Anonymousreply 238February 7, 2022 3:08 AM

Oh, the Russian wonder fell!

by Anonymousreply 239February 7, 2022 3:17 AM

It's easy to see why interest in figure skating is dropping off in this country.

This program is ugly. Terrible music, terrible costume, and she just skates around and preps for big jumps.

by Anonymousreply 240February 7, 2022 3:18 AM

I prefer the Torvill & Dean version

by Anonymousreply 241February 7, 2022 3:20 AM

With those red gloves she looks as though she’s about to do the dishes.

by Anonymousreply 242February 7, 2022 3:20 AM

Ha!

Bitch is still gonna win. 🤬

by Anonymousreply 243February 7, 2022 3:24 AM

Again, I wonder why ROC Nation didn't let one of the other women skate in the short program. They had little to fear. Scherbakova is the reigning world champion and I'm sure she would have won the short. Seems a bit cruel/unfair.

by Anonymousreply 244February 7, 2022 3:25 AM

R242 in a brothel.

by Anonymousreply 245February 7, 2022 3:25 AM

Who wants Nathan Chen to fuck them? I do.

by Anonymousreply 246February 7, 2022 3:25 AM

No, R240, interest in figure skating has dropped off in the US because no US girl can skate, literally, half that well. "Terrible music" is an interesting charge considering Bolero is literally a classic skating choice, and, as R241 pointed out, it was just fine with the world when Torvill and Dean used it. She doesn't just prep for big jumps (a la Elaine Zayak); she is also an incredible spinner and she has great extension coming out of her jumps. She is in a different sport than the rest of them. Jason Brown should skate so terribly.

by Anonymousreply 247February 7, 2022 3:29 AM

The Russian skating factory really produces great skaters but dispenses with them with great speed too.

by Anonymousreply 248February 7, 2022 3:33 AM

It's a boring routine and she does absolutely nothing with the music. It matters little since it's all about the jumps.

She's got those broad shoulders, you can tell she knows this is her only Olympic shot. In about a year she'll be another big, fridge-bodied bitch being passed around Russia's elite officials. Speaking of, how is little Alina Zagitova these days?

by Anonymousreply 249February 7, 2022 3:34 AM

Alina who? These Russian waifs are so forgettable.

by Anonymousreply 250February 7, 2022 3:40 AM

Jesus😳

Some of that skiing track is practically vertical 😳

I’m on USA network now.

by Anonymousreply 251February 7, 2022 3:41 AM

This Swiss skier who just went into first has a huge gut.

by Anonymousreply 252February 7, 2022 3:45 AM

Yes, he does! Mom commented on it too.

by Anonymousreply 253February 7, 2022 3:48 AM

I should have been a pro ski racer. These men are so hot.

by Anonymousreply 254February 7, 2022 4:00 AM

[quote] Terrible music

Why are Americans skating to horrible pop music? This goes back to the Shibutanis skating to the music of Coldplay.

Meanwhile, other skating programs are out there skating to classical music pieces. No wonder the Americans are not taken as seriously..

by Anonymousreply 255February 7, 2022 4:08 AM

Love the jackets the U.S. snowboarders are wearing. So much better than that Ralph Lauren schlock.

by Anonymousreply 256February 7, 2022 4:14 AM

R254, the skiers are very hot with their beefy bods or even dad bods.

by Anonymousreply 257February 7, 2022 4:17 AM

R244 Scherbakova has been inconsistent this season.

R249 Zagitova is doing ice shows and raking in the cash, but she has most definitely lost her jumping ability. She performed at the gala for the Russian nationals and bombed every jump.

by Anonymousreply 258February 7, 2022 4:21 AM

by Anonymousreply 259February 7, 2022 4:27 AM

Canadian womens hockey team scored twice on ROC in 20 seconds. LMAO. Maybe that big-shoulder bitch Kamila can skate over and score a couple of goals for their poor hockey team.

by Anonymousreply 266February 7, 2022 4:38 AM

Isn't this like the second Winter Olympics to have a team event for figure skating? I wonder how did figure skaters feel when the Olympics decided to do that? Were they happy because it's another chance to win a medal or pissed because it was yet something else to have to train for?

by Anonymousreply 267February 7, 2022 4:47 AM

They’re probably glad of the opportunity. They get to do their programs with not so much at stake and nerves will have calmed by the time they compete individually.

If the team does well, they have a shot at a medal. Whereas in the individual performance they might not get near the top 3 positions.

Chen has her silver medal. In the individual competition, she’s never gonna be in the top 3.

by Anonymousreply 268February 7, 2022 5:09 AM

It's probably been asked before so I'll apologize in advance but how did curling get to be an Olympic sport? Granted most sports are a combination of skill and athleticism but how much of an afhlete do you have to be? Still appreciate the eye candy though.

by Anonymousreply 269February 7, 2022 5:11 AM

Woke up to ZERO new medals. Our favorites keep failing. First Klæbo, then Kleveland and now Kilde. Fuck this shit. 2 days since our last gold and the cheating Russians are now ahead of us in medals. I'm disgusted.

by Anonymousreply 270February 7, 2022 5:14 AM

Tanned?

by Anonymousreply 271February 7, 2022 5:14 AM

You're currently tied with SWEDEN for golds, Norwegian. But that could change shortly here if the Swedish woman wins the GS.

At least that's a lot better than the U.S.' poor performance so far.

by Anonymousreply 272February 7, 2022 5:19 AM

R264, that’s his mom, not wife. Scroll down further. Wife is young and pretty.

by Anonymousreply 273February 7, 2022 5:21 AM

Vincent Zhou has Covid, I’m sure he’s out. Is Ilia Malinin there as alternate? They’re saying If Vince tests neg tomorrow he can skate—uh, not likely, I don’t think Covid vanishes overnight!

by Anonymousreply 274February 7, 2022 5:23 AM

R264, how dare you insult my mother!

by Anonymousreply 275February 7, 2022 5:23 AM

Norwegian, I wasn't even aware Norwegians could get as mad as you've demonstrated in this thread! You live in my idea of a utopia.

It's been great to behold.

And sorry that you're having such a shitty Games so far.

by Anonymousreply 276February 7, 2022 5:30 AM

Any update on the skier that had the horrible fall?

by Anonymousreply 277February 7, 2022 6:57 AM

Vincent Zhao tested positive for COVID. Good thing he got in on the team event with that mediocre FS and nabbed the silver because it looks like he'll be out for the men's individual. Ilia Malinin is the first alternate. Is he actually in Beijing? He did a great skate at Nationals.

by Anonymousreply 278February 7, 2022 7:00 AM

Beat is only 34 and he's of sturdy alpine peasant stock.

by Anonymousreply 279February 7, 2022 7:01 AM

Are they saying how much covid is going around. So many are getting it AFTER they arrive.

by Anonymousreply 280February 7, 2022 7:03 AM

Was Michelle Kwan the last great US female skater? Given that she last skated competitively in 2005, I'm surprised she hasn't inspired and US hasn't produced more ROC- or even JPN-level women.

by Anonymousreply 281February 7, 2022 11:46 AM

You may have forgotten us...gold medalists, unlike Kwan.

by Anonymousreply 282February 7, 2022 12:19 PM

One hit wonders don't count. They got lucky and knew when to get out before they returned to mediocre the next year.

by Anonymousreply 283February 7, 2022 12:35 PM

R269, actually, curling is pretty active physically. All that up and down and squatting would wear on your back and knees, and, god knows the sweeping part is damn hard work. Any time they show some reporter trying it out, they are winded just doing it once and only half-assed at that. I love archery in the summer as well, but it is a lot less physically taxing than curling. Hell, even golf is a lot less physically taxing.

by Anonymousreply 284February 7, 2022 1:35 PM

In golf the players get driven on a cart from hile to hole. Talk about physically undemanding.

by Anonymousreply 285February 7, 2022 1:38 PM

The downhill ski course was both beautiful and scary! all those rugged mountains and the landscape and going down hill at nearly 90 miles a hour! holy crap! The athletes are "pros" of course, but I don't see how any of them could keep their eyes on the course when you look out at that horizon and mountains!....

I didn't watch the end of the competition, but who was that handsome dark haired blue eyed skier who was in first place for the longest time? I don't think he was the eventually winner. but I noticed the camera loved lingering on his face in close up! ...

by Anonymousreply 286February 7, 2022 2:05 PM

Are we laughing at the dumb cunt who gave up her US citizenship to rep communist China???

What a stupid cunt

by Anonymousreply 287February 7, 2022 2:08 PM

The fucking Russians CHEATED in ski jumping. They paid off the judges to disqualify all the jumpers so that only Slovenia, Russia and Canada were left. Fucking BULLSHIT.

by Anonymousreply 288February 7, 2022 2:20 PM

And people still think it's weird that Bolshunov managed to win by so much in cross country skiing yesterday? Lmao. The Chinese are helping the Russians cheat. Come on. It's so obvious. Today's ski jumping was a fucking parody! The ski jumpers said the judges measured the suits a new way... a new way. In a fucking Olympics?! And why only the women?! Lmao. Fake. Fake. Fake. Cheating cheaters wilm cheat.

by Anonymousreply 289February 7, 2022 2:23 PM

A Chinese ski jumper jumped 71 m in a 100 m hill and got 5×20 in points. LOL! The Chinese and Russians are the same. Fucking cheaters. As if 4 countries just got disqualified for suits... suits that were perfectly ok in the first half, but not the second. Weird that.

by Anonymousreply 290February 7, 2022 2:46 PM

This time last year Lindsay Vonn was touting her bearding relationship with gay hockey player PK Subban. Funny how she didn't even mention him the other night when they were interviewing her about Michaela Schiffrin.

So sad those kids broke up - I guess it was the pressure of two high profile careers.

by Anonymousreply 291February 7, 2022 2:48 PM

Does anyone know why the female snowboarders and freestyle skiers pull two tendrils of hair out of their helmets? Almost all of them do it, and I'm curious if there's a reason behind it.

by Anonymousreply 292February 7, 2022 3:13 PM

R292 it's "the look" they all want I guess.

by Anonymousreply 293February 7, 2022 3:35 PM

R278 They can’t bring Malinin in to replace Zhou anymore. Once a skater has skated in the team event, he can’t be replaced. Also, once the draw happens for the men’s short program, the skater cannot be replaced. Both are true in Zhou’s case.

by Anonymousreply 294February 7, 2022 4:03 PM

[quote] Does anyone know why the female snowboarders and freestyle skiers pull two tendrils of hair out of their helmets?

Aerodynamics.

Can Vincent Zhou survive the Beijing COVID gulag?

by Anonymousreply 296February 7, 2022 4:10 PM

I agree r283. Article is 4 yrs old but main reasons seem to be: new scoring system (more emphasis on technical points vs. artistry), non-centralized coaching system, competition w/gymnastics (thanks Simone) since they draw similar stature young girls, and the fact Russian skaters are simply amazing technically.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 297February 7, 2022 4:18 PM

The Russians are amazing technically and with their jumps but they often come off very robotic and lacking in expression.

by Anonymousreply 298February 7, 2022 4:32 PM

China and Russia both lie, cheat and steal regularly. They should not be allowed to host things like the Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 299February 7, 2022 5:00 PM

R287 We should be grateful she did her falls for China rather than the US... 😀

by Anonymousreply 300February 7, 2022 5:04 PM

I was wondering how long it would be before some of the best athletes would start to test positive for COVID. Such a great way to get rid of the competition. Of course, none of the Chinese athletes will test positive.

by Anonymousreply 301February 7, 2022 5:26 PM

R299 Yeah! Damn those Commies, the big stinkers!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 302February 7, 2022 5:36 PM

I used to be a huge skating fan but the "new' scoring system emphasizes racking up points with jumps. It's boring seeing skater after skater basically doing the same routine--same jumps, same tricks.

There's no spontaneity. No one just sticks in a jump to make up for a previous failed jump because routines are so tightly choreographed.

BORING!

by Anonymousreply 303February 7, 2022 5:54 PM

Skating today is all about jumps. I remember the artistry of Toller Cranston.

by Anonymousreply 304February 7, 2022 5:58 PM

Now it's all about quad jumps like the men's. Do women even do edge spirals anymore in competition? Speaking of which, my partner and I once shared an elevator w/Michelle Kwan at some benefit in SF a few years back, and she was lovely and down to earth, plus she's a liberal and now will be Biden's ambassador to Belize.

by Anonymousreply 307February 7, 2022 6:10 PM

The olympics are corrupt, politicized, money-grubbing spectacle.

A world-championship in a particular sport is far more respected than 'olympic champion".

by Anonymousreply 308February 7, 2022 6:29 PM

Canada's 'indigenous people' are preparing a bid to host the 2030 olympics in Vancouver using for the mpst part all of the 2010 olympic venues. They say it will part of their 'reconciliation' strategy or some such nonsense.

Talk about smash'n grab! If there's a ton of money around with corrupt leanings, they're the first in line as always, playing on the whole 'un-surrendered land' and dredging up histrionics for the whole guilt trip angle.

by Anonymousreply 309February 7, 2022 6:42 PM

^ You might want to try that in English next time, sport.

by Anonymousreply 310February 7, 2022 6:54 PM

Ice dancing has no jumps. If you want artistic skating that's what to watch. There are certain required elements, but the programs are quite different.

by Anonymousreply 311February 7, 2022 7:19 PM

The Gen Z athletes are not bringing home the medals like previous generation of American athletes.

by Anonymousreply 312February 7, 2022 11:04 PM

Damn it!!!

I missed all the male skaters! I was watching NBC like a dumbass and they’re on USA Network!! 😡🤬😡🤬

I just now saw Darth Vader skate.

What did I miss?

by Anonymousreply 313February 8, 2022 2:26 AM

Nothing.

by Anonymousreply 314February 8, 2022 2:44 AM

And now they move back to the network??

USA is talking about hockey now 🤔🤔

by Anonymousreply 315February 8, 2022 2:57 AM

Make skaters will be on NBC tonight

by Anonymousreply 316February 8, 2022 2:59 AM

^male

by Anonymousreply 317February 8, 2022 3:00 AM

At midnight.

by Anonymousreply 318February 8, 2022 3:04 AM

This Super-G race is endless.

by Anonymousreply 319February 8, 2022 3:06 AM

NBC is so fucking stupid to HAVE to show something most of us don’t give a shit about LIVE while making everyone wait for the events we want to see. They did it with endless swimming heats while gymnastics finals were on and major news with Biles out.

We don’t need to see every fucking skier going downhill for over an hour in PRIMETIME.

by Anonymousreply 320February 8, 2022 3:09 AM

So odd watching the skiing, the runs are covered with fake snow and everything else is brown and dry as hell. This whole Olympics is creepy.

by Anonymousreply 321February 8, 2022 3:09 AM

R311, ice dance has cribbed a number of elements from pairs like side-by-side skating (dance hold greatly de-emphasised), pairs spins, and complicated lifts. No jumps though.

It’s to the detriment of both disciplines, imo.

by Anonymousreply 322February 8, 2022 3:09 AM

So this American cow wins a gold for fucking China???

by Anonymousreply 323February 8, 2022 3:10 AM

R323 Yep. She’d rather win a medal for an oppressive regime instead of America. She can’t wait until 2026?

by Anonymousreply 324February 8, 2022 3:12 AM

An indigenous Olympics would be great. God knows they need something new to jazz up this tired old thing.

Next Olympics needs to be in a place with actual ICE and SNOW. Yes, I know it’s fucking cold in Beijing and they own the IOC.

by Anonymousreply 325February 8, 2022 3:12 AM

Are you brain damaged R323? Athletes compete for their parents countries all the time. Even Americans!

by Anonymousreply 326February 8, 2022 3:13 AM

Wasn’t this mens super G on yesterday??

Where the fat man won a silver?

by Anonymousreply 327February 8, 2022 3:13 AM

Did she decide to represent China because she couldn't make it on the U.S. team? Because if so, that makes her a really big self absorbed all about her p.o.s.!...

by Anonymousreply 328February 8, 2022 3:13 AM

R325 They could have had it in TX last year, then. Only no electricity to go with that ice and snow.

by Anonymousreply 329February 8, 2022 3:14 AM

I know that, you asshole, R326, it just bothers me.

The Americans haven’t won much in these competitions. We have 3 so far. That’s not good.

by Anonymousreply 330February 8, 2022 3:16 AM

Men's free skate on now.

by Anonymousreply 331February 8, 2022 3:18 AM

It's still early but no gold yet is worrying for the US team.

by Anonymousreply 332February 8, 2022 3:18 AM

Her reason for playing for China is to inspire young Chinese girls. she seems to lacks awareness of the politics involved. What country is she a citizen of?

by Anonymousreply 333February 8, 2022 3:20 AM

Hanyu just shat the bed.

by Anonymousreply 334February 8, 2022 3:26 AM

If he hits the quad axel in free, it will more than make up for it.

by Anonymousreply 335February 8, 2022 3:29 AM

[quote]So this American cow wins a gold for fucking China???

She is being paid millions by Chinese companies for endorsements. This was a financial decision, nothing more.

by Anonymousreply 336February 8, 2022 3:30 AM

We'd all do the same.

by Anonymousreply 337February 8, 2022 3:42 AM

Nathan Chen should have fixed his teeth years ago.

by Anonymousreply 338February 8, 2022 3:43 AM

China's main female figure skater is also American-born, naturalized Chinese. She stunk though and was ripped apart on the Chinese internet as fake Chinese and not worthy to represent China. If Eileen Gu had falled on her face, she would've recieved the same treatment.

by Anonymousreply 339February 8, 2022 3:44 AM

Even a quad axel (which he hasn't hit yet) is going to make up for a zero point miss in the short program.

by Anonymousreply 340February 8, 2022 3:45 AM

Yes, I recall a sad video where Chinese people started throwing rocks at a kangaroo because they wanted to see it hop. They stoned the poor creature to death. These people are unforgiving.

by Anonymousreply 341February 8, 2022 3:45 AM

“Six quads in a single program!” I hate this obsession with the jumps. These programs are just skating around between jumps anymore. No artistry, just technical feats.

by Anonymousreply 342February 8, 2022 3:50 AM

I can only marvel at Johnny Weir.

He is a masterpiece of the figure skating world zeitgeist!

by Anonymousreply 343February 8, 2022 3:51 AM

You can’t win a gold medal in the short program, but you can lose one. Hanyu just lost one.

by Anonymousreply 344February 8, 2022 3:51 AM

That just isn't true, R342. It's just a snarky/bitchy thing to say about "the good old days." They aren't necessarily doing any MORE jumps than they used to, it's just that the jumps they are doing now are more difficult. There is even a rule that limits the number of jumps one can perform.

by Anonymousreply 345February 8, 2022 3:54 AM

If you want to understand the value of artistry, watch Italy’s Grassl (on now) and see how awful his artistry is

by Anonymousreply 346February 8, 2022 3:55 AM

[Quote] They aren't necessarily doing any MORE jumps than they used to, it's just that the jumps they are doing now are more difficult.

To rack up points, they ALL do the same jumps in a strict program. All the routines seems to look alike and blend into one another.

by Anonymousreply 347February 8, 2022 3:57 AM

US wins silver in men's super G. Mikaela Shiffrin's beefy Norwegian boyfriend won bronze. I thought the French skier she was banging for a while was much hotter.

by Anonymousreply 348February 8, 2022 3:58 AM

The Norwegian looks goofy but I like the beef

by Anonymousreply 349February 8, 2022 3:59 AM

No one cares when athletes chop and change countries…except when it costs USA! USA! USA! a medal.

by Anonymousreply 350February 8, 2022 4:00 AM

Does anyone do quad-quad combos?

by Anonymousreply 351February 8, 2022 4:00 AM

My ambien is going to make me forget the last few skaters.

by Anonymousreply 352February 8, 2022 4:01 AM

My gummies do the same.

by Anonymousreply 353February 8, 2022 4:02 AM

R351, not yet, but the kid who finished second in the US nationals (and should have gotten to go to the Olympics instead of Jason Brown) can do them in practice and plans on doing one in a program. I'm also sure that Kamila Valieva could do it already as well.

by Anonymousreply 354February 8, 2022 4:02 AM

Quad-quad is the last hurdle

by Anonymousreply 355February 8, 2022 4:05 AM

No, some of them are working on quints.

by Anonymousreply 356February 8, 2022 4:06 AM

I don’t think quints are possible—because of the physics

by Anonymousreply 357February 8, 2022 4:07 AM

Yuma Kagiyama is so cute.

by Anonymousreply 358February 8, 2022 4:09 AM

Most of the men are wearing black, how very boring.

by Anonymousreply 359February 8, 2022 4:09 AM

R358 SO cute!

by Anonymousreply 360February 8, 2022 4:09 AM

The inxs song used by the Canadian, it did not sound like the original sung by hutchence. The music arrangement though did sound like the original. Was it just the acoustics in the arena or was it a cover with another singer?

by Anonymousreply 361February 8, 2022 4:11 AM

I know they are illegal now, but how long before skating allows upside down jumps like that black French French skater

by Anonymousreply 362February 8, 2022 4:11 AM

Canada lives it’s stocky “im straight” male skaters

by Anonymousreply 363February 8, 2022 4:12 AM

Are they really working on quintuples? That cant be possible.

by Anonymousreply 364February 8, 2022 4:12 AM

The point piling is made worse by NBC having a point board on the top left showing every point as it it made

by Anonymousreply 365February 8, 2022 4:13 AM

I can remember that old queen, Dick Button, sitting around pontificating about how quads would never be possible either.

by Anonymousreply 366February 8, 2022 4:14 AM

Chen is great but the Japanese guy was more fun

by Anonymousreply 367February 8, 2022 4:14 AM

I. Any even imagine how one progresses from single, double, triple, and quad jumps

by Anonymousreply 368February 8, 2022 4:15 AM

Great job, Nathan. So happy for him. He's a great representative for the US.

by Anonymousreply 369February 8, 2022 4:15 AM

Kagiyama's fabulous. Definitely the future of the sport.

by Anonymousreply 370February 8, 2022 4:16 AM

It was another singer. That was not Michael.

by Anonymousreply 371February 8, 2022 4:16 AM

Nice job Nathan.

by Anonymousreply 372February 8, 2022 4:16 AM

Watch out athletes!! You might find peepee in your coke!

by Anonymousreply 373February 8, 2022 4:16 AM

They mentioned that someone tried a quad axel (4.5 turns). Don’t think physics would allow that either

by Anonymousreply 374February 8, 2022 4:17 AM

Only Covid can stop Chen.

by Anonymousreply 375February 8, 2022 4:18 AM

How do you all know Hanyu choked?? They haven’t shown it on NBC yet

by Anonymousreply 376February 8, 2022 4:18 AM

It’s artistry and showmanship that really distinguishes between skaters. Just flopping your hands around doesn’t make you graceful.

by Anonymousreply 377February 8, 2022 4:20 AM

Choreography and song choice to build up and get audience excited count alot

by Anonymousreply 378February 8, 2022 4:20 AM

Boy howdy, Chen's the king.

by Anonymousreply 379February 8, 2022 4:21 AM

[quote] How do you all know Hanyu choked?? They haven’t shown it on NBC yet

He was on the other network. USA network. Didn't make NBC.

by Anonymousreply 380February 8, 2022 4:22 AM

Chen is amazing—he’s going to win the gold. Get his Yale degree, and the sky’s the limit

by Anonymousreply 381February 8, 2022 4:23 AM

Hanyu was absolutely on NBC, not USA. He was the first one on NBC an hour ago.

by Anonymousreply 382February 8, 2022 4:24 AM

Hanyu blamed the ice for his mistake.

by Anonymousreply 383February 8, 2022 4:24 AM

Jason Brown has a nice ass.

by Anonymousreply 384February 8, 2022 4:24 AM

[quote]Canada lives it’s stocky “im straight” male skaters

Borrowed him from the Americans. He's from Anchorage.

by Anonymousreply 385February 8, 2022 4:24 AM

R371, It sounded like Joe Cocker to me.

by Anonymousreply 386February 8, 2022 4:26 AM

There have been plenty of athletes who represented the USA and they were born elsewhere. American sports aren't shy about importing talent in sports where we are not very good. If Gu was only halfway good, no one would care.

Conversely, the Chinese crapping on Yi, are they supporting Gu? If so, it is the same as above, only care because the latter won the gold.

by Anonymousreply 387February 8, 2022 4:27 AM

This Georgian could def tuck me in tonight.

by Anonymousreply 388February 8, 2022 4:27 AM

You'd think that after all these years of skating, Brown would have a quad.

by Anonymousreply 389February 8, 2022 4:27 AM

Taupe gloves should be banned. Make hands look creepy, like prostheses.

by Anonymousreply 390February 8, 2022 4:28 AM

So Brown follows the American tradition of Weir and Rippon in saying "I'm gay and I don't give a damn about any quads!"

by Anonymousreply 391February 8, 2022 4:31 AM

I remember years ago Charles Tickner didn’t have a triple, but we still sent him

by Anonymousreply 392February 8, 2022 4:34 AM

Rippon was doing a quad Lutz.

by Anonymousreply 393February 8, 2022 4:34 AM

R371 It was Joe Cocker’s version.

by Anonymousreply 394February 8, 2022 4:35 AM

Why doesn't Nathan get his teeth done so they look as nice as Julie's?

by Anonymousreply 395February 8, 2022 4:36 AM

R395, maybe it would mess with his aerodynamics

by Anonymousreply 396February 8, 2022 4:37 AM

Isn’t it weird that you train in one sport every waking moment and suddenly, you stop

by Anonymousreply 397February 8, 2022 4:38 AM

Jason Brown is ahead of Hanyu. My stars.

by Anonymousreply 398February 8, 2022 4:40 AM

I like Nathan Chen, but his skating doesn’t have much personality. He’s an amazing technician with competent artistry—and that’s enough to be the best ever

by Anonymousreply 399February 8, 2022 4:51 AM

Never, r362. (Soraya Bonaliy.)

Hanyu was not on USA; I just watched that program; he was definitely on NBC. He completely missed a scheduled quad, and has zero chance of medaling now.

Nathan Chen is The Man, but Kagiyama is the New Kid. Men's FS will be thrilling for more years!

I'm telling you, get your "Stars on Ice" tickets now!

There's always a chance of splatfest up the ladder.

Or surprise COVID.

by Anonymousreply 401February 8, 2022 5:32 AM

I think he’s possibly looking at bronze, if he’s perfect & everyone above him splats. It. Gold-silver is surely a Chen-Kagiyama lockdown (either order).

by Anonymousreply 402February 8, 2022 5:36 AM

Chen is musical And he consistently picks interesting music to which to skate, which puts him a cut above someone like Boyang. What he lacks is flexibility. I always feel like his lower back is tight and that results in less flow in his choreography. Brandie Tennell has a similar issue.

Thing about Eileen Gao is that she's American born, raised and train and she's competing for a country whose human rights record is so appalling that several countries, including the US are doing a diplomatic boycott. It's not like Keegan Messing or Piper Gilles skating for Canada, there's something a little gross about competing for China during this game, particularly since Gao, unlike that little figure skater, could have gotten to the Olympics without doing so.

I'd feel the same way about a Russian American competing for Russia.

by Anonymousreply 403February 8, 2022 5:54 AM

R403, there's nothing more American than chasing the dollar, be it Chinese, Russian, Canadian etc..

by Anonymousreply 404February 8, 2022 5:57 AM

R403, fun when America points to other countries an complains about human rights records

by Anonymousreply 405February 8, 2022 5:58 AM

I’m from the US but had an intense dislike for Yuko Kavaguti, who gave up her Japanese citizenship to skate pairs for Russia under Tamara Moskvina’s tutelage. Tiki’s last name was Kawaguchi, but she changed that as well to fit the Cyrillic mold! Ugh i couldn’t stand her.

Other than that one, I don’t mind when athletes switch.

by Anonymousreply 406February 8, 2022 6:00 AM

Eileen Gu is a nobody in the states, however she becomes a national hero in China with multi-million dollar deals. I don't blame her.

by Anonymousreply 407February 8, 2022 6:03 AM

If you don't want talents to leave then treat them better, I am pretty sure Eileen Gu and her family suffer lots of discriminations due to their Asian heritage. In a country that an Asian can be randomly attacked on the street or pushed into the subway, I don't blame her .

by Anonymousreply 408February 8, 2022 6:06 AM

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are very cute together and really know their stuff; plus they make it all pretty interesting and specific. However, if you overlook that giant heart on Johnny's shirt tonight, didn't you think he looked almost like Rachel Maddow? Is that the look he was going for?

by Anonymousreply 409February 8, 2022 6:07 AM

It's a small detail, but Nathan Chen has good hair.

by Anonymousreply 410February 8, 2022 6:11 AM

R409, agreed, Tara and Johnny are good ice skating commentators.

by Anonymousreply 411February 8, 2022 6:12 AM

I bet!

Oh, you mean the stuff on his head?

by Anonymousreply 412February 8, 2022 6:12 AM

R281, the last US lady who was truly competitive for world/Olympic titles was Sasha Cohen in 2010. Liu could've been the next, but puberty and drama with her overbearing dad haven't been kind to her thus far.

Shoma and his coach are cute together. Chen will win the title unless he makes a several mistakes in the free. I expect Hanyu to compete one more season after the Olympics to go to the world event in Japan next year. I'm heartbroken Vincent couldn't compete because of covid, what a shitty way to go out where you like his skating or now.

by Anonymousreply 413February 8, 2022 6:37 AM

Why wasn't the US Men's alternate - the guy actually finished 2nd - at the Games, to step in for Vincent? I didn't hear anyone mention that.

by Anonymousreply 414February 8, 2022 6:53 AM

I asked this above, & r294 graciously answered me.

Basically it’s bad timing, had the team event not taken place, he could’ve subbed in for Zhou.

by Anonymousreply 415February 8, 2022 6:58 AM

R403, Really, is the US currently detaining a million members of an ethnic minority and forbidding them to practice their religion? How about forced sterilization?

Funny, your kind of what-about-ism is straight out of the old Russian propaganda handbook.

R408--Gu's from San Francisco, where she attended a private school and plans to attend her mother's alma mater--Stanford. So, no, she's hardly been through a tough childhood filled with threats to her well-being. And it's not like she's planning to spend her life, or even, from the sounds of it, much time in China.

Nathan Chen, Karen Chen, Vincent Zhao, Alyssa Liu all have Chinese-born parents, but none of them have chosen to skate for China. I suspect Gu will regret it since she shows every sign of planning to continue living in the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 416February 8, 2022 7:39 AM

Gu. should just say she represents China for the $.Please spare the world the inspirational bs. China is a true authoritarian state so it’s all very gross. She has some deals with US companies too. Do they really want her as the face of their brand? Is she going to give up her U S passport?

by Anonymousreply 417February 8, 2022 7:56 AM

R416 The endorsement deals Eileen Gu currently has in China beat all those American combined (Nathan , Karen, Vincent...) and she is a household name in China, if she had stayed in the US, I doubt many American would know who she is.

Naomi Osaka chose to represent Japan instead of the US, her dad told her she would be better off in Japan, and he is right. Eileen Gu and her family made the same decision, she now has a much bigger career in China.

by Anonymousreply 418February 8, 2022 8:07 AM

R416 Oh, I really doubt Gu will regret anything. Americans have a short memory about the Olympics and it’s not as if she’s doping or doing anything illegal. Athletes country hop all the time, like Bubba, the “Irish” skier from America, whose only connection to Ireland was the fact he was born there while his father had a temporary job.

I find it distasteful to country hop like that, but we all know she’ll be laughing her way to the bank. Maybe she’d get a Wheaties box here and an ad in some sports magazine. In China, she’s on every billboard and in every magazine. But what’s really fucked up is that US companies like Red Bull, Tiffany and Co, Victoria’s Secret, Estee Lauder, and Cadillac have all signed her up for endorsement deals, too. America loves to celebrate assholes and sellouts.

by Anonymousreply 419February 8, 2022 8:22 AM

R417 Rumor is she had to give up her US citizenship as China doesn’t allow dual. Slate has a link about that and how she deleted that tidbit from her bio.

It’s confirmed that the figure skater Beverly Zhu (oh, excuse me, Zhu Yi) renounced her US citizenship. What’s rich is that after her dismal performance in the team event, the Chinese on Weibo are eviscerating her, complaining that she took the spot away from a girl who was actually born, raised and training in China but came from humble means and didn’t have the resources that Zhu had.

by Anonymousreply 421February 8, 2022 8:31 AM

R420 Poor Zhu, if only she had skated well... Just ask Tanith Belbin (and Ben Agosto), since they won a bronze medal, no one made noise on how they took the spot away from David Mitchell/Loren Galler-Rabinowitz, all forgiven!

I'm not sure minors can give up their citizenship, but if Gu did and plans to stay in the U.S. she gave herself a major tax headache.

R420, Belbin had an American father. I also cut pairs and dance teams some slack because it's hard to find a partner. It's a small pool of talent. But Belbin did move to the U.S., trained here and stayed here. Gu plans to stay in the United States and go to Stanford.

Ice dancer Tim Kuleto is American born, but skated for Japan. However, he moved there, married his Japanese partner and actually interrupted his training in order to establish residency.

Gu wants to live in America, train in American, attend an elite American university and pull in Chinese money. She's no role model.

by Anonymousreply 423February 8, 2022 9:18 AM

Interesting thread on Gu from an article in the Economist. China tried to recruit Alyssa Liu first, but her father, a Chinese dissident (and gay--he's sort of the ultimate skating dad) said no way.

Gu's all in on the Chinese propaganda, but has posted in support of Black Lives Matter. Doesn't seem to have said a word in support of Hong Kong protesters though. Funny that.

Pretty sure her dad made that up, her dad is a very shady character, the claim of him being a "dissident" or involved in 1989 student protest are all BS, but telling stories helped to apply for asylum.

by Anonymousreply 429February 8, 2022 10:58 AM

Gu made the right decision for her. What is disturbing is how China is fundamentally changing things with its purchasing power. They’re changing the NBA and most worrisome, Hollywood. Movies have gotten sucky in no small part to catering to Chinese audiences.

by Anonymousreply 430February 8, 2022 11:03 AM

Oh, I don't think China has any blame in the sucky quality of the movies. Can't see the producers saying," The Chinese love Ben Platt. Let's put him in 'Evan Hansen', " or " James Corden in 'Cats'? The Chinese love him."

by Anonymousreply 431February 8, 2022 11:17 AM

[quote] Hollywood. Movies have gotten sucky in no small part to catering to Chinese audiences.

R430 that was five years ago, these days Hollywood productions can barely get into Top 10 in China, their box office is dominated by local productions, which shouldn't surprise anyone. The superheroes and racing cars can only do so much, they are like McDonald and KFC, once the novelty is over, they are still fast food after all.

by Anonymousreply 432February 8, 2022 11:34 AM

Gu made the right decision but she should stop pretending to be a social justice warrior who wants to inspire young girls. She’s phony and a hypocrite.

But Nathan has that intensity in his eyes, a thrilling and confident physicality, and magnificent hair!

by Anonymousreply 435February 8, 2022 1:39 PM

Another shit day by Team Norway and Sweden leads us in gold medals, which is disgusting. It makes me sick. At least Klæbo finally got his gold medal. But today we lost out on 3 out of 4 "sure" gold medals. All our favorites failed except one. First we suffered because of a covid outbreak among our athletes and now athletes are choking hard and losing out on gold medals. We are cursed this Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 436February 8, 2022 1:54 PM

It's Chen's confidence and composure that is most appealing.

by Anonymousreply 437February 8, 2022 2:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 440February 8, 2022 3:03 PM

I am curious who Eileen Gu's American father is. Why do I get the feeling that he's some billionaire white guy who was married at the time of conception? We all know how Asian women are. Eileen's mother was on a student visa when she came here.

I think Gu will come to regret getting into bed with China, pun intended. Look at tennis player Peng Shuai, forced into a sexual relationship with some old guy who was high on the food chain. She's a prisoner in China. What makes you think Gu will be able to dodge that? China also demands a lot more of its famous people in terms of money. She'll pay a shit ton in taxes to both the US and China.

If Gu really did give up her US citizenship, and it's a question as she refuses to answer, she's a fool. She'll be a slave to China and as anti-Chinese sentiment grows in the US, no one will care.

by Anonymousreply 441February 8, 2022 3:14 PM

I can't wait for Men's ice hockey and that American stud Jake Chelios playing for the Chinese.

R444 I watched it today on Eurosport. It had British commentators.

by Anonymousreply 445February 8, 2022 3:35 PM

And Hanyu talked after he messed up - something Hissy Fit Nathan never does.....he just flounces off and skips the interviews.

Eileen Gu … lobbyist for authoritarian regime that practices racial cleansing..

by Anonymousreply 455February 8, 2022 4:13 PM

CCP officials made the now-retired Peng Shuai sit and watch Gu yesterday before they disappear her for the rest of her life. Sad.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai sat with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and watched American-born Chinese freeskier Eileen Gu win gold at the women’s big air event Tuesday.

Peng appeared a day after delivering a controlled interview in Beijing that touched on sexual assault allegations she made against a former high-ranking member of China’s ruling Communist Party. Her answers — delivered in front of a Chinese Olympic official — left unanswered questions about her well-being and what exactly happened.

Bach said he and Peng spoke with athletes at the Big Air Shougang venue for about 30 minutes, and the pair was seen together in the stands.

Bach said Peng told him that she was going into quarantine later Tuesday and planned to exit the closed Olympic coronavirus bubble. He was not sure if she planned to return for any more Olympic events.

Peng, a local star who has encouraged Chinese girls and women to take up tennis, watched as Gu formally ascended to a similar position with her first Olympic gold medal.

An 18-year-old born in San Francisco, Gu decided in 2019 to compete for China at the Beijing Games, spurning Team USA in the process. Gu, whose mother is Chinese, has said repeatedly that her goal is to be a role model for young female athletes in China.

Gu sidestepped a question about whether she shared concerns from the international community about Peng’s well being. She said he was “really happy” Peng attended and honored that a star from a major sport like tennis came to see “niche sports like freeskiing.”

“I’m really grateful that she’s, yeah, happy and healthy and out here doing her thing again,” Gu said.

Peng’s interview with French sports newspaper L’Equipe and an announcement that Bach met Peng for dinner this weekend seemed aimed at allaying sustained international concerns about the three-time Olympian and former No. 1-ranked tennis doubles player. Fears for Peng’s safety have threatened to overshadow the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Peng told L’Equipe that the concerns were the result of “an enormous misunderstanding.” But the format of the interview appeared to limit follow-ups about the allegations and their aftermath.

L’Equipe asked Peng about sexual assault allegations that sparked the controversy in November. The allegations were quickly scrubbed from her verified account on leading Chinese social media platform Weibo. She subsequently dropped out of public view for a while. That led to “where is Peng Shuai?” questions online and from players and fans outside of China, in part because the country has a history of disappearing people who run afoul of its leaders.

In her lengthy post, Peng wrote that Zhang Gaoli, a former vice premier and member of the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, had forced her to have sex despite repeated refusals. Her post also said they had sex once seven years ago, and that she developed romantic feelings for him after that. Zhang has not commented on the accusation.

“Originally, I buried all this in my heart,” she wrote. “Why would you even come find me again, take me to your house and force me and you to have sexual relations?”

Gu “made the right decision”? Greed? Is it only all about the $$$$$$$?

Sure everything looks good from the outside in China. It’s the behind the scenes stuff that is a nightmare.

Trust me, living in China is no walk in the park. If this girl gave away her US citizenship for Chinese citizenship, there is a huge price. It comes at a cost: control. No matter how lauded and praised she is, if she does not toe the CCP line (as other actors and athletes have failed to do), her life will no longer be her own.

Now she is basking in the limelight, but is it worth the risk of becoming a pawn to China?

I would never, ever give up Western citizenship for China. After having lived there, that was the only thing that provided respite from the horrors of the treatment of their own citizens.

by Anonymousreply 459February 8, 2022 4:37 PM

CCP was tired of dealing with the Peng Shuai controversy so they forced her to retire. Now that she won't be expected at tournaments or appear in any media appearances, problem solved. The only other option was to suicide her. We'll never see her again, and it's all because she spoke out against a Party member and his sexual assaults. I'm sure if Eileen dares to step out of line, they'll pass her around to break her and she'll face the same fate. Freeskiing isn't even as high profile as tennis. She's in deep shit already and she doesn't even know it.

by Anonymousreply 460February 8, 2022 4:44 PM

[quote] Really, is the US currently detaining a million members of an ethnic minority and forbidding them to practice their religion? How about forced sterilization? Funny, your kind of what-about-ism is straight out of the old Russian propaganda handbook.

Well, in America, the land of "equality," it's fine to impoverish blacks and shoot them at will without consequences. They are also systematically blocked from equity in voting and the political process, in education, and in jobs. We're in the middle of Jim Crow 2.0. Let's stop pretending America's so high and mighty.

by Anonymousreply 461February 8, 2022 4:51 PM

I don’t believe we are stating that the US is “high and mighty”. It has many issues, and could use some introspection.

The Trump Era(including the pandemic which was accelerated by Trump policies), collapse of infrastructure and many revered institutions has the roosters coming home to roost in the good ole USA.

That said, there is a continuum, and China and Russia are at one end and Western democracies at another.

For all of the USA’s faults, it is not (yet) an authoritarian regime.

by Anonymousreply 462February 8, 2022 4:58 PM

I wonder why Gu is being so evasive about confirming whether she renounced her US citizenship. She was asked six times at the post-medal press conference and gave mealy-mouthed answers. If you did it, own it and be proud. No more of the “I feel American in America and Chinese in China.” We all want to know, just what color is your passport?

by Anonymousreply 463February 8, 2022 4:59 PM

Note: no Asian-American sports superstars are quitters during the Olympics! We would kill them if they did.

by Anonymousreply 464February 8, 2022 5:04 PM

We don't want the Chinese American female skater who fell.

by Anonymousreply 469February 8, 2022 6:00 PM

Who said anything about claiming her? No one cares about freeskiing, actually. It's more gossip, especially since she's being so secretive about basic things (citizenship) while simultaneously being promoted relentlessly by American media. They desperately want the American public to notice this Chinese athlete -- why? I haven't even been looking for articles about her but she's all over CNN, People mag, ESPN...

by Anonymousreply 470February 8, 2022 6:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 471February 8, 2022 7:59 PM

R471, not to mention, many of the “quads” are not real quads, especially with the Russian girls, who pre-rotate on the ice before their skates leave the ground- it’s technically a cheat; and a lot of the men doing the harder quads are cheating it too.

There plenty of cases of atheletes switching countries for the Olympics outside of the USA and it causing controversey. I remember the South Korean speedskater who dumped South Korea for Russia and it led to a major national debate there.

Vic Wild won gold in Sochi and bronze yesterday. He competed for the US and then married a Russian snowboarded and switched. Nobody really cared but he then he gave a bunch of dopey interviews abou how he was only Russian now and how incredible Putin was. He was also one of Russia's only big stars from the 2014 games not to get caught for doping. Probably because he didn't start training with the Russian federation until shortly before the games.

It would be hysterical if they didn’t let that privileged cow leave the country. 😛😛

by Anonymousreply 478February 8, 2022 10:20 PM

Yeah, I don't think Gu understands the protection US citizenship offered her. For the bozoes doing the whataboutism evil-United-States thing, I'll just point out that if Harvey Weinstein had been a powerful producer raping Chinese actresses, you'd never have heard of it and he wouldn't be sitting in prison. You sure as hell couldn't post "Uyghur Lives Matter" on your Instagram feed without repercussions, let alone march in support of Uyghurs or Hong Kong students.

Being abroad is limited protection. Chinese students in the U.S. take it for granted that their social media is watched by the Chinese authorities.

As an American citizen being courted by the Chinese government, Gu is naive to think she won't be subject to a different set of expectations as a Chinese citizen. She gave up a powerful birthright and for what? A little more money? Because as a gold-medal winner for the U.S. who looks like a model, she'd have made plenty of money in the U.S. She'll make less here now because she sold out to a dictatorship.

What dumbfuck would renounce their American citizenship for CHINA? Oh boy, this won’t end well.

by Anonymousreply 503February 9, 2022 4:03 AM

Woke up to a new gold medal. Fuck yeah. Birk Ruud, you legend!

by Anonymousreply 504February 9, 2022 4:05 AM

R497, Hanyu’s fans can be obsessive sometimes but it appears Hanyu had a hard fall in FS practice today and has generally seemed dejected/not himself. I’ve always liked his skating but I think the mistake may have been about more than a rut on the ice. He has repeated stress on his landing foot and maybe less control than he had in the past.

by Anonymousreply 505February 9, 2022 4:07 AM

Yes, r504, but you should see what Alex Hall looks like.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 506February 9, 2022 4:21 AM

I don't buy the "rut" cause for Hanyu's missed quad. Wasn't he the first skater in the second half (as it were)?

I'm watching it again now. Nope, he simply hadn't built up the speed, energy, or position for that first quad.

Hanyu is a beautiful and graceful skater, though. And the remainder of his Short Program was superb.

by Anonymousreply 507February 9, 2022 4:33 AM

So are all the sports at the winter Olympic just variations of skating and skiing?

Oh, there’s luge! How thrilling..

by Anonymousreply 508February 9, 2022 4:39 AM

[Quote] Hanyu is a beautiful and graceful skater, though. And the remainder of his Short Program was superb.

Overall he’s a greater skater than Chen. If he had hit his Short, he could have won again

by Anonymousreply 509February 9, 2022 4:40 AM

Yes, of course, Hanyu "could have." But recall that Nathan set a record for SP points.

Both men have multiple World Champioships. Olympics aside, the skaters are close in skill and artistry.

Their duel would have been the premier event. Ah, well.

by Anonymousreply 510February 9, 2022 5:13 AM

The last great duels were the Battle of the Brians & the Carmens in ‘88, everything since had either been anticlimactic, predictable, and-or rigged!

by Anonymousreply 511February 9, 2022 5:16 AM

Klæbo won. He is handsome and a gentleman. Just like Bjørn Dæhlie was.

by Anonymousreply 512February 9, 2022 5:36 AM

R495 True, there’s lots of country hopping but rarely do athletes renounce their US citizenship. Ideally, they’ll maintain dual citizenship. Gu (and Zhu) permanently gave up their US citizenship to become Chinese nationals.

The US finally has a gold medal, courtesy of Lindsey Jacobellis winning snowboard cross just now.

by Anonymousreply 515February 9, 2022 7:00 AM

Omg & she finally has a gold medal! I’ll never forget her losing what should’ve been her first gold when she fell while showing off!

by Anonymousreply 516February 9, 2022 7:02 AM

Did someone on ROC Nation fail a drug test? Can't wait to find out what this legal situation is... with presenting medals.

by Anonymousreply 517February 9, 2022 7:04 AM

I assume the winners wanted to wear something Russian, like the bootleg flag armbands they wore on their Opening Ceremony outfits that were prohibited.

by Anonymousreply 518February 9, 2022 7:09 AM

I can’t with Nathan Chen and the flailing about. Can no one give him some lessons in posture, extension? His expression is non-existent.

by Anonymousreply 519February 9, 2022 7:32 AM

OMG Lindsey Jacob Ellis finally did it after she lost because she showboated at the finish all those years ago? And it's the first US Gold?

Damn, congrats to that persistent airhead.

Hanyu was a great skater, but he's 27 and had various injuries. He hasn't been competing much for that reason.

And a divot on the ice? Preventing someone if his caliber from doing a jump? I don't buy it. He popped it. Singles skating is just so hard on the body.

Nathan's a musical skater, not a dramatic one. He doesn't really play characters. I am rooting for him just because I don't think he can physically do this for another four years and he is an extraordinary skater.

Wonder what's up with the team award. If there's a drug test failure, it would be really weird for the US skaters to get Gold.

by Anonymousreply 520February 9, 2022 8:44 AM

R512 Yes he did. I'm very happy for him. You could tell how much it meant to him, he even cried. That first ski race was a disaster. Bolsjunov won by a lot. With the form Bolsjunov is in another gold will be next to impossible. This might be his one and only gold medal from this Olympics. That's why it was so important for him to win the sprint. I feel like if he doesn't get gold in the other races it's ok, because at least he got one, you know? Everything else is a bonus.

by Anonymousreply 521February 9, 2022 9:39 AM

Guesses on the legal issue holding up the figure skating medal ceremony?

by Anonymousreply 522February 9, 2022 10:13 AM

[quote]Guesses on the legal issue holding up the figure skating medal ceremony?

Russian doping, again. One of then failed the drug test before the event and ROC have been filibustering since. It's the reason they made the same skaters skate short and long - trying to compartmentalize when the rules say the whole team and possibly the federation is disqualified.

They'll cheat their way back in again.

by Anonymousreply 523February 9, 2022 10:16 AM

Russia is a fucking joke. Full of cheaters, drunks, and whores.

Nathan Chen is a wonderful skater bitch at R519. Flailing? Fuck you. You’re trying to gaslight and doing it badly.

by Anonymousreply 524February 9, 2022 11:07 AM

Y'all can judge Chen's "flailing" and not being "dramatic" for yourselves:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 525February 9, 2022 12:13 PM

Maybe it's just me, but I could never fathom living in the U.S. and then going to the olympics to compete for another country and walking in the ceremony under that other nation's flag and with people you don't even know, while you look on and see the U.S. flag and congregation!...

by Anonymousreply 526February 9, 2022 12:22 PM

And now, I say as a Weisenheimer, calibrate exactly how, in comparison, Hanyu is NOT "flailing" and is MORE "dramatic" (maybe he is, but then, he had just screwed up):

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 527February 9, 2022 12:22 PM

R525, I give Nathan credit for doing a lot of hard work between 2018 and now, because then I didn’t like watching him, and now he has a precision to his movements that shows he cares about everything he’s doing on the ice enough to dedicate enormous amounts of time to practice and presentation. Yuzuru’s style will always look different than Nathan’s, just being who he is, but I don’t think he’s as well-trained as Nathan going into this one. He’s had depression, isolation, and injury that made him uncertain whether he would make it to Beijing up until a few months ago. So style aside, the qualities that depend on endless run-throughs are not as precise.

by Anonymousreply 528February 9, 2022 12:33 PM

For those complaining about Nathan's presentation, he'll never be like Jason (btw 528 has a good read.) or others viewed to have better "artistic impression", but from watching him over the years, he's made really significant progress. Fortunately for folks like him & Ilia, ISU has placed greater emphasis on more quantifiable elements, similar to FIG's adoption of open ended scoring in gymnastics.

by Anonymousreply 530February 9, 2022 2:06 PM

We had two medal chances today. Got a gold medal in freestyle skiing and silver in nordic combined. Very happy about that. The silver in nordic combined was surprising. Our favorite Riiber tested positive, so he didn't compete. Graabak was more than a minute behind after the ski jump, but he is so incredibly fast in cross country skiing he actually managed to grab silver!

by Anonymousreply 536February 9, 2022 2:45 PM

R536, obviously, it’s hard to believe that the whole team wasn’t juiced. Apparently—with a caution that this is just from Twitter—the team’s doctor is an anesthesiologist who has been tied to other doping incidents.

To the poster who asked if "all there was" were skating and skiing in various forms:

Pretty much, yes. Add snowboarding.

The OC decided long ago that the traditionally-winter sports (at least in US colleges) of basketball, gymnastics, and wrestling would be in the Summer Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 551February 9, 2022 8:17 PM

R538, the substance in her system was one that would enhance recovery time and allow her to train harder, and is also known as a substance that can mask other banned substances. I’m sure she trained as hard as humanly possible, with the encouragement of the adults in her life, because a gold medal would mean a stipend for life in Russia. To have to give up her whole childhood from the age of 3 or 4 training and not get anything from it would be horrible for her, but the system itself is horrible.

by Anonymousreply 552February 9, 2022 9:19 PM

So it was The phenom female skater who doped?

Russia is a scourge on this planet. I know the USA has had its horrific shit to answer for, but Russia offers no value and hasn’t for over 80 years.

by Anonymousreply 553February 9, 2022 9:59 PM

Tangential namedropping - Stéphane Lambiel was my student at Uni in Lausanne. He was barely present and flunked out or dropped out of uni. Cute as a button. I'd lost my gaydar with that generation. Also years ago I studied French in Geneva with tennis Olympic loser Michael Chang and he was super sexy (and straight).

by Anonymousreply 554February 9, 2022 10:02 PM

If she gets disqualified and the Russians lose their team gold, then these Olympics will suddenly become a lot more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 555February 9, 2022 10:03 PM

It’s time to ban Russia from the Olympics. Byeeeee

by Anonymousreply 556February 9, 2022 10:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 557February 9, 2022 10:12 PM

And to think Putin is going to epically fuck up invading Ukraine. Russia is a shithole country. Useless.

by Anonymousreply 558February 9, 2022 10:14 PM

Putin won't give the order to invade during the Olympics. He doesn't want to shit all over his bestie Xi's propaganda show. But as soon as the Games are over, watch out Kiev. Bad boy Vlad is coming for you.

They just continue to cheat. I was wondering why, suddenly, all their female skaters were so phenomenal. Now we know.

by Anonymousreply 565February 9, 2022 11:40 PM

Doping a 15-year old girl figure skater is just gross and pathetic.

Someone mentioned upthread how Russian Figure skating has just used up and spit up these dainty little girls. They've had one brieft moment in the sun and then never again because of awful injuries, over-training, crushing anxiety, anorexia and now maybe doping.

by Anonymousreply 566February 9, 2022 11:42 PM

I still don’t understand why those Russian motherfuckers are allowed to participate at all 😡😡😡😡

They banned the fucking country because of doping yet they’re all there with their worthless Russian flag and their asshole, dictator thug.

I’ll say it again, FUCK the Russians.

by Anonymousreply 567February 9, 2022 11:45 PM

I feel sorry for Valieva, but if this gets Eteri and her machine suspended, it's a very good thing for the sport. Eteri's wrecked Ladies figure skating with her disposable starved prepubescents who last one season. Think of the Golds that should have been won by Japanese skaters and the bronzes that would have been won by the occasional American woman.

by Anonymousreply 568February 9, 2022 11:47 PM

The IOC won't do it of course, but ban Russia from next Olympics. Ban known cheating and doping coaches and administrators for life. The latter is important if the IOC really want to cut the systemic cheating. But then, Bach is out there legitimatizing the CCP's treatment of Peng Shuai.

by Anonymousreply 569February 9, 2022 11:53 PM

These Russian teenage phenoms really do show up for such a short time. Sure they dominate but then are quickly replaced by the next one in the factory line. You don't really see one last for awhile like some Americans did back in the 90s and early 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 570February 10, 2022 12:05 AM

And yes, the men's double luge is very homoerotic.

by Anonymousreply 587February 10, 2022 1:19 AM

The Russian doping scandal is the worst example of doping because it was state-sponsored. Government bureaucrats and the national olympic committee created a doping scheme that they implemented on a massive scale, even doping their paralympic athletes! The Russians even built a secret room at the testing control site in Sochi in 2014 to swap out the actual tainted samples with clean ones.
