Now a new meta-analysis of 23 studies sheds light on that issue. The study, published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Dermatology, analyzed research on the impact on thinning male hair of using various dosages of the three oral and topical medications -- minoxidil, dutasteride and finasteride -- for two to four months.
One male hair loss treatment works better than others, study finds

Wanna fucking tell us OP instead of making us read the article? Do you work for CNN?

Dutasteride came out swinging first, followed by Finasteride (Propecia). Though the doses in each were through the roof. They were advocating for 5 mg of finasteride whereas Propecia is typically 1 mg (or 1.25 mg if you buy and split generic). The sides on Dutasteride are known to be more substantial. The upside is more aggressive hair regrowth and stability (with greater emphasis on the latter)
Ashton Kutcher admitted on CONAN a few years ago that he was on Dut for a decade, and finally gave it up when we was considering being a father (for fear of it affecting the sperm...though there's no studies to suggest it does so)
Having been on Propecia with minimal to no sides for over a decade, I wouldn't be quick to jump to Dutasteride. I have friends who went on it for a few weeks and experienced crippling sides they never had with Propecia/Finasteride. But then others have no issues. So it's very individual.

I’ve been on 1mg finasteride for 5 1/2 years and it stopped my hair loss but never really regrew anything. I don’t feel comfortable taking 5 mg just to see if it makes a difference.
I’ve never even head of Dutasteride. What are the possible crippling side effects?

Wow! I was shocked to see minoxidil in last place as the least effective. I had always tried to use it but it was too annoying to deal with and it made my head itchy so I never stuck with it and would always quit after a few weeks. Glad I didn’t waste my time.

Minoxidil as a topical has some very uneven efficacy. The biggest issue beyond it being a pain in the ass to apply (twice daily), is that it can cause a certain amount of shock loss initially. While this hair grows back, the bigger issue is that any minor hair regrowth experienced on it, will immediate halt, retreat and fall out the minute you stop slathering the topical on.
The top hair docs I've consulted with were actually against it. If Finasteride/Dut doesn't do the trick for arresting loss (and firming up what remains), they said a transplant is the only reasonable option. I'd tend to agree with this assessment. Though you want to ensure you're getting it done by a top surgeon, as there's a cottage industry thriving (particularly overseas) in that arena with shoddy results.

They don't mention topical finasteride at all.
