Starz new series ‘Gaslit’ starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn

Omg. This sounds like a must see!!!

The series, which launches April 24, tells the story of Martha Mitchell (Roberts), the wife of Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell (Penn), who is the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate.

However, the team behind the series said that it’s not a “girlboss overcorrect of history” or a “Wikipedia rundown” of events behind the taking down of a President.

The series focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.

MEH! NO! THANKS! BYE!

by Anonymousreply 1February 3, 2022 3:13 AM

Regurgitated 20th century history as a vehicle for old movie stars. Shocked this isn’t Ryan Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 2February 3, 2022 3:15 AM

I am officially over Watergate. I never want to hear about it again. Tell another story instead of the same old same old.

by Anonymousreply 3February 3, 2022 3:23 AM

Julia does have a big mouth. Maybe she can play Martha Raye next.

by Anonymousreply 4February 3, 2022 3:31 AM

Oh, you bitches will all be watching.

by Anonymousreply 5February 3, 2022 3:33 AM

The makeup on Penn looks great, but the eyes shouldn't have been left untouched. They're too young (which is saying a lot, given it's Penn). He needed some kind of contact lenses to complete the look.

by Anonymousreply 6February 3, 2022 3:42 AM

Interesting: Martha Mitchell died of cancer at 57, and then she was played in "Nixon" by Madeline Kahn, who also died of cancer at 57.

I would like to point out that Julia Roberts is 54.

by Anonymousreply 7February 3, 2022 3:44 AM

The trailer looked pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 8February 3, 2022 3:49 AM

Starz? I've never met anyone who has Starz.

Poor Julia has sunk to this?

by Anonymousreply 9February 3, 2022 3:58 AM

Will this have an eye on the Trump years?

All those underlings who could right a huge wrong but won’t, and what that will ultimately cost them?

by Anonymousreply 10February 3, 2022 4:01 AM

Looks great, and it’s very well cast. The good thing is, nos that Julia’s is coming out, hopefully it means we won’t have to suffer through Meryl’s version.

by Anonymousreply 11February 3, 2022 4:25 AM

Fun fact, Danny Moder Roberts was the DP for the last movie Sean Penn directed. Just buddies having with buddies. That said the the trailer looks fun.

by Anonymousreply 12February 5, 2022 5:05 AM

I can't watch anything with Penn. He's a terrible person.

by Anonymousreply 13February 5, 2022 5:06 AM

It's a great teaser. Interesting she still gets top billing. I know her company is producing it but he's a very big star. Women really get top billing. Her name is abundantly first. And Sean Penn still did it. That's a pretty big deal.

by Anonymousreply 14February 5, 2022 5:37 AM

It looks quite interesting. Unfortunately, as someone upthread pointed out, who has Starz?

by Anonymousreply 15February 5, 2022 5:53 AM

Why is it on Starz? Those are two massive stars? It has to be money related somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 16February 5, 2022 6:09 AM

R14 did you think her own production company was attempting to tell a story about a gu? Its very obviously a vehicle for her. And she looks good in the trailer. Sean Penn is her buddy and gets to play.

by Anonymousreply 17February 5, 2022 6:23 AM

Watergate remains a fascinating story. The deeper you dig into all the stuff that happened the more fascinating it gets.

It's the best soap opera story ever written, a Shakespearean tragedy almost. And I'm sure the GQP still to this day has never forgiven the democrats for bringing down their president. And they have never forgotten the humiliation of trying to bring down Bill Clinton and failing.

Democrats: 2

Republicans: 0

by Anonymousreply 18February 5, 2022 10:33 AM

R14 because she is the main lead and focus of the show. 🙄🙄🙄

by Anonymousreply 19February 5, 2022 10:36 AM

R16 because clearly Starz is the one who decided to make this show…

by Anonymousreply 20February 5, 2022 10:36 AM

The trailer looks good, I wish it were longer

by Anonymousreply 21February 5, 2022 10:45 AM

I always wondered why Martha Mitchell wasn’t one of DL’s iconic divas.

by Anonymousreply 22February 5, 2022 11:10 AM

She's before most of our times, I'm an eldergay, but was just a gayling during Watergate

by Anonymousreply 23February 5, 2022 11:16 AM

I lived near Watergate for awhile. They had a nice grocery store in their garage. The best in the neighborhood. I wonder if it is still there?

by Anonymousreply 24February 5, 2022 11:30 AM

Martha was everything DL loves. .Have some drinks and let your mouth do its thing.

by Anonymousreply 25February 7, 2022 1:55 AM

The Safeway in the Watergate closed a few years ago, R24.

by Anonymousreply 26February 7, 2022 2:27 AM

R26 did it? I didn’t know that

by Anonymousreply 27February 19, 2022 7:47 AM

Starz?

I assume Netflix, Amazon, Apple, HBO....are not interested

by Anonymousreply 28February 19, 2022 7:50 AM

R28 Starz created the series. It’s theirs. It wasn’t a show being pitched.

by Anonymousreply 29February 19, 2022 8:02 AM

The first episode is already up on the Starz app.

by Anonymousreply 31April 24, 2022 4:15 PM

Yep. It’s good!

by Anonymousreply 32April 24, 2022 8:00 PM

Really good so far. Watergate was before my time but I've always been interested in the total insanity of it all. I didn't know John Dean fucked around with call girls.

by Anonymousreply 33April 24, 2022 8:01 PM

I liked the first episode, but the prosthetics/make up on Penn is a bit distracting.

by Anonymousreply 34April 24, 2022 8:06 PM

Watching G. Gordon Liddy have a flip out in John Dean's office was hilarious. LIddy came and spoke at the college I attended. Weird and scary and all sorts of psychological issues.

The devices on Sean Penn is kind of amazing. for some reason I feel like his eyes are open and more clear with the make up.

by Anonymousreply 35April 25, 2022 12:33 AM

Raymond Liddy is now the most compelling and loveable character in the show.

by Anonymousreply 36April 25, 2022 12:36 AM

G Gordon Liddy was a fucking nutcase

by Anonymousreply 37April 25, 2022 12:36 AM

Still married!

by Anonymousreply 38April 25, 2022 12:39 AM

I believe John and Maureen Dean are the only ones who are still living, and John Dean is ancient now.

by Anonymousreply 39April 25, 2022 12:42 AM

So far every photographer has long hair. and looks vaguely like Kyle Mooney.

by Anonymousreply 40April 25, 2022 12:47 AM

God I miss the octagon shaped glasses of the early 70s! I had some. Very Oseary Drakoulias from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou!!!

by Anonymousreply 41April 25, 2022 12:51 AM

Has anyone ever read Mo Dean's book on Watergate?

by Anonymousreply 42April 25, 2022 1:20 AM

I absolutely love when the queen looks like a star in EVERY scene. Bitch would not have it any other way.

by Anonymousreply 43April 25, 2022 2:22 AM

Why the horrible wig on Betty Gilpin?

by Anonymousreply 44April 26, 2022 1:02 AM

I want to see this but who the hell has starz? So we have to sign up for yet another app. This show actually looks good unlike most streaming drivel.

by Anonymousreply 45April 26, 2022 1:07 AM

Betty Gilpin and Sandra Bullock seem to be morphing into the same person.

by Anonymousreply 46May 1, 2022 9:27 PM

r7, If you jinx Julia I will personally release a voodoo curse upon you. Tread lightly.

by Anonymousreply 47May 1, 2022 9:29 PM

r14, Julia Roberts has been bigger than Sean Penn and most stars period since at least 1996. I would argue that she is still the biggest female movie star on the planet with JLO and Angelina as very close seconds.

by Anonymousreply 48May 1, 2022 9:36 PM

Julia Roberts? Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 49May 1, 2022 9:42 PM

R48 Jlo a huge movie star? Are you crackers?

by Anonymousreply 50May 1, 2022 9:47 PM

The two biggest female box office stars right how are ScarJo and Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 51May 1, 2022 9:49 PM

r51, Thats right now. For example, Michael B. Jordan is currently a bigger box office draw than Will Smith but that doesn't make him a bigger star than Will Smith.

by Anonymousreply 52May 1, 2022 9:53 PM

The only thing being gaslit was the public having to watch Julia pretend to be an actress for the past 3 decades.

by Anonymousreply 53May 1, 2022 9:57 PM

r53, You are such a miserable little hater who's probably not very accomplished in your own field.

by Anonymousreply 54May 1, 2022 10:00 PM

Martha Mitchell was an absolute harridan with a brassy manner and a foul mouth. Julia is playing it way too "classy."

by Anonymousreply 55May 1, 2022 10:59 PM

Has Julia ever shown tits or ass in a movie?

by Anonymousreply 56May 1, 2022 11:13 PM

r56, No.

by Anonymousreply 57May 2, 2022 1:16 AM

I hate Julia Roberts. she's so annoying and FAKE

by Anonymousreply 58May 2, 2022 1:32 AM

I loved the Watergate break-in reenactment. God, what bunch of doofuses they all were.

by Anonymousreply 59May 2, 2022 1:37 AM

R56, barf emoji!

by Anonymousreply 60May 2, 2022 2:44 AM

[quote] God, what bunch of doofuses they all were.

Looking forward to the miniseries based on Jan 6 insurrection.

by Anonymousreply 61May 2, 2022 2:45 AM

r61 every single topic under the sun does not need to have Trump inserted into it.

by Anonymousreply 62May 2, 2022 2:48 AM

No, but watching those Keystone Kops on "Gaslit" brought back fresher memories.

by Anonymousreply 63May 2, 2022 2:51 AM

As a new fan of Dan Stevens I may watch.

by Anonymousreply 64May 2, 2022 3:25 AM

What are his pronouns?

by Anonymousreply 65May 2, 2022 3:27 AM

Dan Stevens is always great in everything.

by Anonymousreply 66May 2, 2022 3:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 67May 2, 2022 3:45 AM

Maybe it's a windbreaker! What's a windbreaker again? Haa haaa haaaaa

by Anonymousreply 68May 2, 2022 4:54 AM

I loved that Liddy and the others didn't think anything of those guys because they were "hippies."

by Anonymousreply 69May 2, 2022 4:56 AM

That is hilarious and apparently true

by Anonymousreply 70May 2, 2022 4:58 AM

You’re terrible, r7. And of course I’m stealing your blurb to post in my social media circle.

Oh, and OP’s post totally reads like a PR release. Pay for your own ads!

by Anonymousreply 71May 2, 2022 5:38 AM

Does anyone know how true some of the wilder stuff is? Like, did Liddy actually choke Magruder? The burnt hand stuff?

by Anonymousreply 72May 3, 2022 10:14 PM

She is very good in the series

by Anonymousreply 73May 7, 2022 5:38 AM

Sean Penn's make-up routine must have made him a fulfilled ass, figuring a certain circle to his completeness.

by Anonymousreply 74May 7, 2022 5:46 AM

DL fave Roberts has to be the Emmy frontrunner. The fabulousness of the clothes alone. Miss Thing looks fantastic. We all love a glamourous Julia Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 75May 7, 2022 7:56 AM

I was very surprised to learn the young actress playing Julia Roberts' daughter (the nerd with glasses), is the same actress who played Reese Witherspoon's daughter in Big Little Lies.

by Anonymousreply 76May 7, 2022 8:04 AM

Those tight 70s pants really show off Dan Stevens' ass

by Anonymousreply 77May 10, 2022 1:31 AM

I'm enjoying this if not to just put everything together as to what happened. I'm more easily understanding just how bat-shit crazy this all was. It also goes to show how much more easily Republicans get away with this crap, even when they get caught. Ultimately, this did nothing to soil the Republican Party. High gas prices and a hostage crisis that didn't go Carter's way got them back in just a short while later. Crazy.

by Anonymousreply 78May 16, 2022 9:35 AM

I want Dan Stevens in my mouth and hole. That is all.

by Anonymousreply 79May 23, 2022 2:13 AM

The actor kind of grosses me out thanks to the character he’s playing. He drives around that Dijon Porsche like he has D.C.’s smallest penis.

by Anonymousreply 80May 23, 2022 3:19 AM

I dunno. She's always Julia Roberts. And all the prosthetics on Penn make you wonder why they just didn't hire Tracy Letts or someone.

by Anonymousreply 81May 23, 2022 3:44 AM

I didn't know that Martha Mitchell was once a panelist on To Tell the Truth.

by Anonymousreply 82May 27, 2022 7:25 PM

This was a struggle to sit through. Julia Roberts was good, Sean Penn was a struggle, Downton Abbey was appalling.
