Retrospective - 1989's "The Fabulous Baker Boys"
What do the elders think of this one? Did anyone identify with the quaint struggles of small-time musicians, or is the realism blown by having this bombshell in the picture as the struggling torch singer?
I know my mother always hated it, but only because she was jealous of Michelle Pfeiffer's enduring perfection. She didn't think it was the least bit realistic for a woman who looked like that to have any real trouble in the entertainment industry, whether as a singer or a whore. Jeff Bridges is a stud, and of course he gets the girl first, but his sex appeal is amplified when put next to his poor dopey brother, Beau.
Between the snobbery of "Jules et Jim" and the braindead farce that was "Bandits," this movie seems to strike a pleasant note in the classic dynamic of two men in love with the same woman.

I liked it, though I can't really remember much about it. I thought it a very melancholy film, with some sweetness (all the characters are decent people). And I still remember the bit about Michelle saying the song Feelings is parsley. She wasn't wrong.

Two men in love with the same woman?! I think you missed the point OP. The brother played by Beau was not in love with her. The struggle between the brothers was that he wanted to keep the family show business going.

OP What 2 men were in love with Michelle in this movie? Not Beau bridges who was married, respectable and focused on business.

A musician friend said that the movie was realistic (as far as being a musician doing gigs in small venues).

This movie is just such a “mood” - that’s the best thing about it. Bluesy, sexy, and just downbeat enough to be cool.
If it’s on TV I’ll pretty much always watch it.

What about Jennifer Tilly's obnoxious voice? When did she stop trying to get cute with it, and just move on with that cursed set of pipes?

The dialog and milieu are convincing, the 3 leads are terrific, and it makes for a pleasurable rewatch.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, with Michelle Pfeiffer at her smoking-hot sultry best. I love the scene where she walks down off the piano and I've even read about how it was filmed.
But then again, I'm a lesbian.

I've lived in the Seattle area for a number of years and there have been a lot of changes since that time. It's fun to revisit now and then for the nostalgia factor. Towards the very end of the movie where Michelle and Jeff part ways she's standing on a corner in Capital Hill the gay ghetto of Seattle. Can see the number 10 bus coming up the hill in the background which turns onto 15th Avenue.

Jeff Bridges could be one sexy mf couldn't he? I loved that movie. And the "Feelings is parsley" comment will live forever.

R11, it's been so long since I've seen TFBB that I'd forgotten that scene, but now I see how Hot Shots parodied it. Valeria Galino was gorgeous and funny, I wonder what's become of her.

I watched this tonight and I love it even more than I did back in 1989. Pfeiffer is absolutely sensational in this movie. The Makin' Whoopee number is when she moved from star to icon. Just an incredible sequence.
But all three leads are excellent in the film. This is really Jeff Bridges' film and he's excellent. Both Jeff and Beau should have been nominated. that year. The chemistry between Jeff Bridges and Pfeiffer is strong.
They really don't make movies like this anymore.

Was Blanche's I Want to be Loved by You in the bar a parody of Makin' Whoopee?

I was so entranced by Pfeiffer that I even bought the DVD. That said, I always felt it lacked a strong plot. With age, I suppose I appreciate the low key aspect of it all the more.

One thing I remember enjoying when I saw the movie was that Beau and Jeff each really played the piano and looked so comfortable at the keyboard - not as if they had learned portions of the pieces they played that were featured in close-up, but really knew what they were doing. The same with Michelle's singing - one of those, "who knew?" moments.

we knew Michelle could sing because she did Grease 2.

Michelle's vocals had to be knitted together for the soundtrack, allegedly.

She had a couple of weeks of training. They would record 20 takes of the same song, and all the standout moments were assembled into a single track. Being a non-singer she found the process laborious and difficult.
