Bradley Cooper says his 'insecurity and ego' led him to replace Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Nightmare Alley'

Bradley Cooper said he decided to replace Leonardo DiCaprio in "Nightmare Alley" because of "insecurity and ego."

The actor was speaking with Mahershala Ali in the latest of Variety's "Actors on Actors" series.

"'Nightmare Alley' was an interesting example of how insecure I am," he said. "I was like, 'Oh, I guess I still am the guy that wants to be in the group.' Because I had no intention of acting in anything other than what I've been writing.

"Leonardo DiCaprio fell out, and Guillermo del Toro came to me. I still remember thinking, 'Oh, wow, the guys that don't hire me, they want to hire me?' And then it was like, 'Of course, I have to do it just because I've never been allowed into that group.' It was insecurity and ego," he said.

"Thankfully, it wound up being an incredible experience," Cooper added. "And that was very interesting to me to play a character, Stanton Carlisle, who has clearly been traumatized as a kid, has no parental foundation, has no foundation for love, intimacy, real connection, and he just is surviving off of a gratification and a desperate need to find out who he is."

In December, del Toro, the "Nightmare Alley" director, said Cooper nailed the film's final scene in one take.

"We're going to shoot this 50, 60 times, whatever we need. And ... take one," he said during a Q&A after the film's New York premiere. "When we finished that day, I was crying and he was crying, and I went, 'One more?'"

Del Toro added that the second take was not as successful as the first.

"This is a moment that, I think, Bradley is playing so many chords — not playing, they're coming out of him," he said.

Bradley needs to get over himself.

Also, I believe Leo and Bradley were lovers at some point.

I don’t think Leo is losing any sleep.

Just watched the movie today. Wow ya - just wow Bradley was exceptionally amazing in this film. An Oscar nod? I also must admit that he’s a very attractive man.

Can someone please explain why Lilith wants to harm him? I just don’t get it.

🥱

by Anonymousreply 5February 7, 2022 2:13 AM

I actually respect Cooper very much for admitting this. He knows he's usually NOT considered in the same league as an actor as Leo, Denzel, Joaquin, and Daniel Day-Lewis, and that he owes most of his career to his looks. And he admits he's insecure about that.

R6 What looks?

What club is he talking about? I kind of get it if the idea is that Jon Bernthal is in the club. He’s not a box office draw but he’s definitely in some sort of boys club where the biggest directors want him.

by Anonymousreply 7February 7, 2022 2:30 AM

Well, Mahershala got the full low down from Bradley.

by Anonymousreply 8February 7, 2022 2:36 AM

I'm so insecure! I'm also incredibly amazing!

by Anonymousreply 9February 7, 2022 2:44 AM

Faux humble brag. Gross.

by Anonymousreply 10February 7, 2022 3:02 AM

Finally saw his cock. Not sure if its real in the movie

by Anonymousreply 11February 7, 2022 3:04 AM

[quote] 'Of course, I have to do it just because I've never been allowed into that group.'

You and Leo were fucking for awhile, Bradley. You were definitely "in that group."

by Anonymousreply 12February 7, 2022 3:32 AM

Nightmare Alley is a much better movie than Don’t Look Up, which was a bit of a happy meal.

R4 I loved the movie. It was nice to see a movie with a lot of characters and extras and atmosphere. I feel like movies like this are an endangered species. As far as your question…In the book and the first movie, it was strictly a money play: Lilith conned Stanton. But in this movie it was alluded to (her scars) that it was because she was one of the women Ezra “hurt.” She was damaged goods and using Stanton was an elaborate ruse to get to Ezra.

R14 thank you

I liked the movie, but Bradley Cooper was awful and miscast.

He had neither the charisma or the rugged good looks that a character like that demanded. And at one point, I could see the scar under his chin where he had a chin implant inserted.

He looked silly with that cigarette dangling from his barely there lips.

Also Cate Blanchet, so sad. I used to think she was such a beautiful, elegant woman. Her surgeon should go to jail.

Deep down I'm just a scared little theatre queen trapped in a big mans body

by Anonymousreply 17February 7, 2022 2:08 PM

"A hobo that pissed himself?! That's the most Philly thing I can imagine! How deep did he have to dig?!"

by Anonymousreply 18February 7, 2022 2:24 PM

Let's all move along and talk about how amazing I am!

by Anonymousreply 19February 7, 2022 2:25 PM

R17 you NAILED it.

by Anonymousreply 20February 7, 2022 2:34 PM

[quote]Can someone please explain why Lilith wants to harm him? I just don’t get it.

I really liked the movie overall, but I didn't get this part of it, either. Lilith even comes right out and says she doesn't need the money, so if that wasn't her motivation, what was? Sheer sadism? Seems hard to believe.

I think Bradley is really more concerned about what gets into him rather than what he gets into.

And anyone who can bed Liam Neeson and Roger Federer among others is doing okay in my book.

I encourage everyone to boycott Bradley Cooper, for glorifying right-wing murderer Chris Kyle in the movie "Sniper."

That man was a murderer, and Bradley Cooper portrayed him as some sort of hero.

I guarantee you that Kyle (had he lived) would have been a Deplorable January 6 MAGAT insurrectionist.

And these are the kinds of roles that Bradley Cooper accepts.

I will never watch one of his movies. Ever.

[quote]I liked the movie, but Bradley Cooper was awful and miscast. He had neither the charisma or the rugged good looks that a character like that demanded.

I think he had both of those qualities in abundance.

by Anonymousreply 24February 7, 2022 3:27 PM

R24, I agree completely, BC was handsome and charming. Cate Blanchett was such a distraction, her acting was so over the top not to mention her face doesn’t even look real anymore. The movie needed more Toni Collette, who looked fantastic.

Correction.

The movie where Bradley Cooper portrayed right-wing murderer Chris Kyle was "American Sniper."

It was directed by ultra right-wing MAGAT Deplorable, Clint Eastwood.

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them."

*glaring at Bradley Cooper*

Wow. That photo with Short is... well, something.

by Anonymousreply 28February 28, 2022 1:25 PM

If they remade Edward Scissorhands, Bradley could play the part, except Edward ends up a star quarterback for the local high school.

by Anonymousreply 29February 28, 2022 1:31 PM

I think it's a shame he had work done.

by Anonymousreply 30February 28, 2022 1:39 PM

Cooper is starting to look like Liberace.

by Anonymousreply 31February 28, 2022 2:50 PM

In more waysch than one!
