Is Beck's music overrated?

I like some of his songs. But most of his music feels like a thin sugary wafer that tastes good at the time and is quickly forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 36April 2, 2022 12:37 AM

OP = Thom Yorke

by Anonymousreply 1January 25, 2022 2:53 PM

I like "Loser" and "Mixed Bizness" but that's all.

by Anonymousreply 2January 25, 2022 2:56 PM

Not really R1 I hate Radiohead.

by Anonymousreply 3January 25, 2022 2:57 PM

Sea Change is an actual masterpiece.

by Anonymousreply 4January 25, 2022 3:09 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 5January 25, 2022 3:12 PM

His heavily-styled Leigh Limon period represents peak-90s to me.

He was overhyped and often underdelivered. His eclectic influences didn't really synthesize into what one hoped they would, and instead, sounded like a hodgepodge. Along with the Scientology stuff, it was kind of a turn-off.

by Anonymousreply 6January 25, 2022 3:15 PM

I think that is a fair assessment OP, I hated Loser because my partner listened to it over and over and over. "Arent you just an angsty troubled teen."

by Anonymousreply 7January 25, 2022 4:01 PM

His dick certainly isn't. Does he have to check it as excess baggage?

by Anonymousreply 8January 25, 2022 4:14 PM

Idk, but I love his music. I don't skip one track from Mutations.

Morning Phase helped me through a terrible time in my life.

by Anonymousreply 9January 25, 2022 4:51 PM

Where can we see it for ourselves, r8?

by Anonymousreply 10January 25, 2022 4:52 PM

I still like this one. There are a few tracks from this album/CD that I like, although I don't think it did that well commercially.

Never got into Beck’s music for some reason. I think partially because people always went on and on about how GREAT he was. He was so overhyped.

by Anonymousreply 12January 25, 2022 5:59 PM

No, not overrated. He has some gorgeous songs.

I like a lot of his music.

Some of it is more of a pastiche/imitation along the lines of Mark Ronson, but he's also put out some really great work.

Despite being a pastiche, Midnite Vultures was great. Sea Change is a classic and Morning Phase is a worthy follow up in the same vein.

I also really liked Colors, though I thought it was Beck's version of the Washed Out/Jack Antonoff (sp?) sound. But the songs were really good.

I wouldn't say he's on my A list of favorites but he's a very solid B.

PS He did a few great songs for Marianne Faithfull almost 20 (!) years ago. This one.....

Beck's music was always "time and a place " music for me. I only ever liked it while doing long drives in the country at night.

by Anonymousreply 17January 25, 2022 6:23 PM

Yes, he was overrated.

Some good songs, but no classics

by Anonymousreply 18January 25, 2022 6:38 PM

My favorite song is "Asshole" from that "One Foot in the Grave" EP he did with Calvin Johnson from K Records. Even typing out that sentence makes with cringe with the full-force music snobbery of that era (you had to be there to appreciate how nasty, gross and arrogant it was--and totally dominated by nerdy white guys who found their "alpha" zone in the indie-rock scenes of the day).

But it is a good song, and a haunting one.

by Anonymousreply 19January 25, 2022 7:54 PM

"Beercan" qualifies as a classic for me.

by Anonymousreply 20January 25, 2022 7:58 PM

He has the balls to play with his style and change it over time- which I respect. Agree as noted above- Mutations is a masterwork

Is it a paean to his penis, r20?

by Anonymousreply 22January 25, 2022 8:03 PM

At the risk of sounding like one of the indie snobs R19's talking about, I don't think he ever improved on his first records, One Foot in the Grave and Mellow Gold. Odelay and Mutations were good too, but the hipster Prince imitations on Midnite Vultures made me cringe. After that I mostly lost interest.

by Anonymousreply 23January 25, 2022 8:10 PM

Who the fuck cares about a dumb cunt who supports anti gay bullshit like he does and his cult SCI-OOOOOOO !!!!!!

HE'S IN A ANTI GAY CULT, ASSHOLES!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 24January 27, 2022 4:49 PM

His live versions of Where it's At has more of an up tempo than on the album..it rocked. Other than that, he was kind of boring

I was given a vinyl copy of The Information, and immediately loved this one. It's weird to try to describe this, but I'll try: if John Lennon had survived into the 2000's, he might have come up with this ambient, percussion forward, dreamy acid trip like thing. It really is like a science fiction version of some old Beatles track.

Oh, Beck says he isn't a Scientologist, R24. His father is, however.

by Anonymousreply 27April 1, 2022 2:54 AM

Yes.

Thread closed.

by Anonymousreply 28April 1, 2022 2:58 AM

Yes. He thinks it's very cute to be a funky little white boy stealing black music.

by Anonymousreply 29April 1, 2022 3:01 AM

I'm unclear about Beck's connection to Scientology also. He publicly distanced himself from it (in 2019), but his ex-wife and the mother of his kids, Marissa Ribisi, appears to be a lifer. I wonder if he's allowed to see his offspring anymore.

Must be since I don’t even know a single song by him, her or them.

by Anonymousreply 31April 1, 2022 2:18 PM

which is more a comment about your ignorance than Becks music

by Anonymousreply 32April 1, 2022 2:32 PM

I only remember ever hearing 1 Beck song, yet immediately recognized him in Echo In The Canyon.

by Anonymousreply 33April 1, 2022 9:08 PM

Beck?

Which one? Jeff Back? Or Beck Hansen?

by Anonymousreply 34April 1, 2022 9:11 PM

R4 Has aged like wine, too. I played it the other day and it sounded as if it could have been released just yesterday. Fresh and not dated at all.

by Anonymousreply 35April 1, 2022 10:23 PM

I absolutely love One Foot In The Grave and Sea Change.

So for those two albums alone he's not overrated.

His folk-inspired songs are just fantastic. Here's one from Mellow Gold I still listen to.
