There, I said it! This 1998 cover made for “54” is better than the original song by Gordon Lightfoot. This one stirs nostalgia and emotions and feels happy. The other doesn’t. Period.

It's one of my all-time favourite songs from the '90s and one of my favourite club songs (the original, the Hex Hector remix).

No, not better at all! It is a disco version which is well sung but really not in keeping with the lyrics to me. Also the voices sound a bit processed. But it is ok.

R1 I actually came back to mention how it was such a popular song in the clubs at the time.
I do love the original also, it’s just very different. One is a dance song channeling disco and the other is more a very dark and sad ballad

It's not a "happy" song.
Waddle back to the pond, Daffy.

It really was the best thing that came out of the film 54. The soundtracks (red and blue) were great and this was the obvious draw to get the blue soundtrack.
It's too bad the theatrical version was so disappointing. The Director's Cut, available on Blu-Ray and streaming, is much better.

It’s a shame the studio destroyed that film r5.

I decided to look up how much the CDs cost on Amazon, and the Red is $25.19 while the Blue is $41.62

54 could've been a good film, but the real story of 54 was just too hot for a big-budget theatrical film in the 90s. They really had to water it down.

“54” should be a miniseries

Ultra Nate, Amber, and Jocelyn Enriquez. Their hits still hold up today:

And if you go to Discogs, R7, they are 99 cents each.

A nice cover, but better than the original...no
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 25, 2022 2:32 AM |
I am with you, OP. And I actually prefer the theatrical cut to the director's.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 25, 2022 2:33 AM |
Ewww get a hold of yourself whore. The Op is 400 pound moonfaced Ewwdwin the tik tok troll.

the sea cow?

They’re both good.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 25, 2022 2:36 AM |
No, not as good. Too polished, the music (instruments) sounded like drum machines & other equivalents. I can see enjoying dancing to this or driving. But to listen to it just to listen, no.

R14, I was referring to the scene where Mike Myers tells Breckin Meyer he wants to suck his cock.

I actually liked the Stars on 54 version, but no. The original is just magical. Lightfoot's vocal, the string arrangement, the slightly enigmatic lyrics. A perfect pop song.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 25, 2022 2:52 AM |
No. Sorry the original is better. The remix is just a dance song. It has nothing of the originals haunting power.

I have yet to find a popular cover of the Lightfoot song that I really like. It's strange because it has a pleasant sad melody that should lend itself to good covers. I didn't care for the Diana Krall cover either.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 25, 2022 3:13 AM |
Diana Krall sounds comatose when singing, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 25, 2022 3:15 AM |
THIS is the one I remember….I think I have the 12” vinyl somewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 25, 2022 3:31 AM |
Yes! That one is so much better, at R23, than at OP.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 25, 2022 3:33 AM |
I hate Lightfoot's voice. He should have been just a songwriter- for other people
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 25, 2022 3:40 AM |
The original is the best, but Viola Wills could sing those youngsters off the stage. Thanks for posting, R23.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 25, 2022 4:39 AM |
All three versions are good but i think the Viola Wills version from 1980 is the best. We can play the same game with the three versions of 'Give Me Just A Little More Time'.
Give Me Just A Little More Time - The Chairmen of the Board (1969)
Give Me Just a Little More Time - Angela Clemmons (1982)
Give Me Just A little More Time - Kylie Minogue (1992)
I choose the second version as being the best. (Memories of visiting WeHo's Mother Lode on a Spring afternoon while on college Spring Break that year)
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 25, 2022 6:15 AM |
No. The Studio 54 version is the best
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 25, 2022 9:11 AM |
For the last time, in its American release, the movie was called “54”, not “Studio 54.”
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 25, 2022 1:13 PM |
An eternal bop
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 25, 2022 7:02 PM |
Lightfoot's version is by far the best because it's authentic. It's his story! about the break up of his marriage. It's heartbreaking.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 26, 2022 8:18 AM |
The remake >>> The original
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 24, 2022 7:42 PM |
Op, were you just released from prison after 20 years?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 24, 2022 7:50 PM |
Marcella Detroit's version is my preferred option.
