Purchased about thirty-five years ago for $1.51 million, Mr. Gere is now asking $28 million.
Richard Gere and his wife purchased another property in upstate NY, so this one is surplus to requirements.

He has good taste.

Is there an authentic Tibetan temple on the property with solid gold Buddhas, blessed by the Dalai Lama to justify that price hike?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 24, 2022 10:31 PM |
perfect

Is there a separate area for gerbils?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 24, 2022 10:47 PM |
That really is a tasteful, beautiful house. Most houses that were $1.5 million 35 years ago are probably in the stratosphere now. Also, this is within commuting distance to NYC, so that adds value as well

Is Vera Wang still a neighbor?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 24, 2022 11:15 PM |
I wonder why he wanted a new country place. This one is lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 24, 2022 11:16 PM |
^ I don't know, the new house isn't nearly as nice, but he's probably cashing out and down sizing
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 24, 2022 11:18 PM |
Good taste? This isn’t good taste it’s just large and beige. The best thing you could say about it is that it’s inoffensive?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 24, 2022 11:18 PM |
Vastly overpriced. Some Russian mobster might pick it up to hide assets.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 24, 2022 11:19 PM |
@r9, bad take, a country equestrian estate doesn't get much nicer then this
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 24, 2022 11:21 PM |
Look at this slightly crazy house on Long Island. These people love wall paper
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 25, 2022 12:05 AM |
I actually really like this.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 25, 2022 12:36 AM |
Why does the article make it sound like he's relocating upstate? North Salem is only 10 miles from Pound Ridge.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 25, 2022 12:48 AM |
Pound Ridge and North Salem are so underrated. None of the prestige of Greenwich, Scarsdale, Bedford. But some great properties only an hour from NYC. You can still find something for under $1 million on over an acre. I would choose that over Los Angeles - $1 million for a shack in East LA.

Is he leaving the area? I thought he owned a restaurant there.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 25, 2022 8:09 PM |
I have to ask, R9, given your operatic reaction, what is good taste?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 25, 2022 8:12 PM |
Love the place (minus the kitschy Disneyland-ish barn and the out of place stupa next to it).
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 25, 2022 8:15 PM |
@r20, "I have to ask, [R9], given your operatic reaction, what is good taste? "
Everything I like is good taste, everything I don't like is bad taste
- Not r9, but you get the picture
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 25, 2022 8:20 PM |
Love it. Wouldn't change much at all.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 25, 2022 8:40 PM |
It's gorgeous.
Maybe he doesn't want all the horse buildings and stuff. The new pile seems a bit smaller overall.

Generational wealth. Descended from 6 Mayflower families. 'Can see right through your striving.

I had no idea Richard Gere became a father in 2019 and again in 2020. What the fuck is he thinking? Dude is 72.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 25, 2022 8:51 PM |
I love it and I love Upper Westchester but that’s way over priced - nothing in that area goes for that much this isn’t the Hamptons (although I much prefer this)
Gere is always putting up his places for sky high asking prices he never has a prayer of getting, however - I remember him trying to sell his Sag Harbor place for something like $60 million.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 25, 2022 8:56 PM |
Richard Gere, a nominally talented actor, is fucking swimming in money.
There should be a law that every actor's contract is made public so we don't have to deal with shocks like this.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 25, 2022 8:57 PM |
^ Why? I don't care. I only care about how much money I have... Hint, it's not a lot
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 25, 2022 9:02 PM |
He worked a lot and must have been extremely money-savvy. His third wife, mother of the toddlers, is 35 years younger than him.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 25, 2022 9:05 PM |
R28 I don’t care (I actually think he’s a much better actor than given credit for, even if not one of “the greats”) but I remember being surprised at all the crazy expensive properties he has - turns out he got quite a few big $15 million type pay days back in the 90s, even if many of those movies bombed. But that’s all you need if you’re smart - have an aggressive agent negotiate just a couple of those before you get “found out” and you’re home free.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 25, 2022 9:07 PM |
Perfection....absolute!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 25, 2022 9:11 PM |
So I guess with assorted ex-wives and children scattered about, it's time to let the gerbil story go, isn't it?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 25, 2022 9:14 PM |
R20 I’d hardly call my first comment operatic. In fact I’d go as far to say as the only thing operatic about this thread so far is your misuse of ‘operatic’.
This house is fine, as I said, inoffensive. But good taste (or good design) is active rather than passive, and this house is passive. It’s just an assemblage of quite ordinary materials, put together in a very ordinary way that has no particularly interesting detailing. It’s extremely ordinary, which is fine, but it’s not good design. And as I mentioned earlier there’s no taste expressed. There’s a degree of subjectivity in these terms obviously, but there’s also a degree of objectivity when looking at a building that is more discernible to those that are trained, or those that work in the industry. This is why I would confidently say it’s not good taste.

Mr. Tom Brokaw recently sold his summer place in Pound Ridge, though not for full asking. It took a price chop to get that estate shifted.

And poor Shilpa Shetty has just finished her 14-YEAR criminal case after Gere forcibly kissed her on stage in India leading to riots.

Can you really trust a real estate agent named "Muffin"?
Is one given to understand than an infant was brought into a Christian church, and emerged with the name "Muffin"?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 26, 2022 9:15 AM |
R15
Don't see how either Pound Ridge or New Salem are "under rated". Peek at past sales from link in R52 shows properties are moving at a brisk pace in both towns. None of them exactly cheap either.
Of course property taxes in that neck of the woods does act as some what of a damper on sale prices. Brokaw former home came with an annual tax bill of nearly $83k per... With SALT deductions limited for time being that might cause bit of a sting to some.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 26, 2022 9:25 AM |
The interiors are subdued and inoffensive because that’s how you sell houses. Anything personal has been removed for the listing photos and walk throughs by potential buyers. Especially for movie stars who don’t want the world peaking at their photos and travel mementos.
I was touring an apartment for sale on the Upper West Side in NYC. I realized it was owned by a soap actor when I saw a Daytime Emmy on a marble pedestal in the living room surrounded by rounded glass encasing.
I recognized the actor’s name and that’s all I remember about the apartment - how proud he was of that Emmy!

It’s fairly priced for the market. A developer can scoop it up and build 10 houses on 4-acre lots. He bought the land years ago and built everything on it. Good investment.
I’m not sure if he still owns the Bedford Post Inn. I know he sold off the main restaurant years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 9, 2022 1:13 AM |
1980 Richard Gere could take me to Pound Ridge whenever he wanted.

Bill Gates daughter has a horse farm in North Salem and royally pissed off the neighbors with all the construction leading up to her wedding that was held there, resulting in road closures the day of.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 9, 2022 1:24 AM |
Zen boring. It's attractive enough in its Shingle Style-inspired exterior and massing, otherwise it's a series of large Better Homes & Gardens grade rooms in a kitschy folksy rich man's Cracker Barrel restaurant style barn of a house, with sprawling low ceilinged spaces in no order or sequence or differentiation. It's someone who didn't know what they were doing spending and sprawling more and more until exhaustion set in and declared, Enough.
The intent was good, but the mashup Malibu hoedown barn for rock royalty meets a middling watered down Frau's fever dream of McKim Mead & White seaside Shingle Style sinks like a rock.
Even the landscaping arrives neither at something pleasantly rough nor pleasantly refined
For all the money and effort, it goes nowhere beyond being big, amorphous, and without a point of view
The new house looks more promising from the exterior,

R39, ya know what, I much prefer that. Gere's house is just blandorama - inoffensive but nothing special like what R34 says
